Game Summaries
Week 4 at SD - Moore is a nice short yardage passer, but lacks the ability to get the ball down the field. Moore doesn't even really look deep, and thus everything stayed short for Miami. Moore threw an INT in desperation mode, but overall played pretty solid. He just lacks the playmaking ability of Henne (which is kind of sad). Moore spread it around well enough, hitting ten different receivers. He's a good decision maker, but without a solid RB and without the ability to get anything going in the deep part of the field, San Diego stacked things up close and Moore and the Dolphins continued to get stranded in field goal range, and were unable to convert on third and longs.Week 6 at NYJ - Matt Moore started out roughly and it went downhill from there. To be fair, he wasn't helped by his receivers who dropped numerous passes all night, most notoriously Brandon Marshall who also managed to fall out of bounds on a sure touchdown. Moore looked a bit scared throughout the evening and once his initial reads were done, he didn't seem to be able to make a smart decision. He forced the ball to Marshall too often, only to be met with coverage by Jets' All World CB Darelle Revis. Revis picked off two of Moore's balls, returning one 100 yards for a touchdown. On the play, Marshall appeared to stumble into Revis as he moved into his route and the two got a bit tangled up. Moore through the ball right to Revis. Moore spent the latter portion of the game picking himself off the turf and it looked like he might be down for the count at one point, but he returned for more. If the offensive line can't do a better job protecting him, he might join Chad Henne on the injury list and if his receivers don't start catching the ball more, it wouldn't matter.
Week 7 vs DEN - Matt Moore- As bad as Miami fans might feel today, the play of Moore was not the reason the Phins lost. Moore was efficient although never really challenged the Denver secondary on any deep patterns but Moore had Miami ahead 15-0 with 5:30 minutes left and then Miami decided to run the ball 3 straight times into the belly of the line never giving Moore a chance to pick up a 1st down via the air. Moore was able to find open receivers most of the day and despite a few drops here and there he showed some solid leadership out there. It's a shame that he lost the fumble in overtime because he never should have been in a position to lose that football game. Moore did a fantastic job of avoiding the pass rush and getting the ball out of his hands quickly. Moore is nothing but a low end QB2, maybe QB3 for bye weeks but he does have a match up next week against the New york Giants who have been allowing a lot of points for opposing QBs.
Week 8 at NYG - Matt Moore fought hard and played as well as he could but really had only one successful quarter against the NYG defense. The Dolphins suffered from a lack of possession and were committed to running the ball which meant Moore had only 22 pass attempts which hurt his production. Moore got some very impressive things done early in the game. On numerous occasions he was able to twist and somehow got out of the grasp of the Giants 7 which he followed up by a making a nice play or run for the first down. On a risky call on a 4th and goal from inside the 5, he faked out the Giants defense and simply ran a bootleg untouched into the endzone for the highlight of his day. Moore was pressured a lot and had to deal with many long drives that he simply could not keep alive. No receiver was making his mark on the game and he had to spread the ball a lot. Ultimately, Moore was sacked twice on the final drive as he tried to tie up the game and sealed off the loss with a pick over the middle to CB Webster as he had to force things on 4th and long. The Giants were not doing a fantastic job covering people but often times Moore did not have sufficient time to survey the field due to the pressure allowed. He began playing a little cautious and getting rid of the ball early which really impacted his day.
Week 9 at KC - He was a leader in every sense on Sunday. Miami may have found themselves the veteran QB they need to hold things together until they can find their QB of the future. Moore was hitting guys all over the place and was very accurate be it the short or immediate plays and even on some occasional long balls like the Fasano TD in the 2nd quarter. Moore kept the pressure on the Chiefs and took everything they were willing to give him. Most QBs in the NFL look pretty good when they are given time to throw the football and Moore seemed to have plenty of time as the Chiefs looked sluggish especially in pass rush after they had just own against San Diego on the MNF game the week before, perhaps that game drained their energy because they had no answers for Moore and Miami most of the day. Moore did an outstanding job of keeping his number 1 target Brandon Marshall happy and making him a very big part of the offense on Sunday. They loosened up the Chiefs by going to Marshall early int eh 1st quarter with the 1st 3 plays all targets to Marshall. Great job by Moore who was efficient and sharp completing a very high percentage of his throws.
Week 10 vs WAS - He was precise for most of the day and despite a couple of big turnovers that against a better team likely would have cost Miami the ball game, he managed to keep it together and lead the Phins to another victory. His completion percentage has been very high the past couple weeks and he seems to know who the best WR is on the field(Brandon Marshall), getting him involved early and making the defenses respect the Miami passing game. This of course opens things up for the running game as evidenced by Reggie Bush. His interception came at a terrible time when Miami was up 7-0. He was being hurried by DL#96 for Washington and he didn't put enough on the throw so the DB undercut Davone Bess and almost returned it the whole way for a score. Moore was quite effective on the crucial 3rd downs many times finding Marshall or Fasano for big 1st downs and turning long drives into points.
Week 11 vs BUF - Moore found very little resistance from the Bills defense on Sunday and lit them up for nearly 150 yards and 3 touchdowns in the first half. The protection up front was nearly spotless and although he didn't take many shots downfield to his receivers, he made good use of the running backs and tight ends. Moore made quick decisions with the ball, recognized the openings in coverage, and was able to take advantage of the mistakes the defense made. He only completed 14 passes in the game but put the ball where it needed to go and helped lead the Dolphins to an easy win. With the game out of reach in the second half, the Dolphins moved to a run-heavy offense which prevented Moore from having an even bigger outing.
Week 12 at DAL - Moore continues to improve each game and has shown that the Dolphins may indeed have a viable quarterback already on their roster. He is daring enough to create deep pass plays but safe enough to avoid cheap turnovers. He clearly feels more comfortable with the offense each week. His best throws are coming on deep patterns and routes near the sidelines. He leans on tight end Anthony Fasano on key short yardage situations but is getting more adept at finding Brandon Marshall on deep passes as well. Moore's best throw came in the third quarter on a touchdown pass to Marshall. On the play, Moore lofted the ball with a high arc to the front of the endzone. The ball passed between two defenders as Marshall made an amazing sliding catch to haul in the score. Moore was unable to convert on third and long late in the fourth quarter as the Dolphins looked to drive for the winning score. That said, he showed excellent judgement in his reads and the deft touch of a veteran on a number of passes between defenders.
Week 13 vs OAK - Moore was not always on target but he showed great poise and leadership early on in the football game as he found his way. He used his feet a lot to create yards rushing the football when no one was open. He missed a few targets to his WR Davone Bess that could have helped Miami score touchdowns instead of field goals early on. Eventually he did connect with Bess to cash in and put Miami up in the 2nd quarter. He ran for a TD in the 2nd half to put Miami up 27-0. Moore was efficient and did not make the big mistake. He continues to show he can be an effective QB in the NFL although he still is not someone you want to build a franchise around.
Week 14 vs PHI - Things started off well for Moore as he led the Dolphins down on a touchdown drive to open the game where he launched a nice rainbow shot into the back left corner of the end zone over Asomugha into the hands of Brandon Marshall. the throw itself as nothing special but then Moore went on to have a pretty rough afternoon with an untimely interception and also a fumble which led to points for Philadelphia. Moore would later get knocked out of the game with a head injury, likely a concussion. The interception was way overthrown as he had his own OLineman, Nate Garner in his lap as he was trying to throw it form his own end zone. Later in the 1st half, Miami had recovered a turnover on a Philly punt return to set up a short field and on the 1st play he was sacked and fumbled the football from the wide 9 alignment Philly runs. The major problem was All pro LT Jake Long left in the 1st quarter with lower back pain and never returned. This left the OL shuffling and Philly was able to generate a lot of pressure on Moore. We'll check the injury reports this week but overall it was a miserable day for Matt Moore.
Week 15 at BUF - Moore missed some practice time this week with head and neck problems, but he looked fine on Sunday. The Dolphins controlled the game with their running attack but Moore made some big plays of his own. He hit Brian Hartline for a couple of big gains down the left sideline and also hooked up with Brandon Marshall on a 65-yard bomb for a touchdown that was perfectly thrown. Moore hooked up with a wide open TE Anthony Fasano for an easy 22-yard touchdown early in the second quarter and could have had a couple others if it wasn't for some dropped passes by his receivers. It was exactly the type of efficient game that the Dolphins look for from their QB.
Week 16 at NE - He started off the game pretty strong by leading Miami to a 17-0 lead and hitting a lot of wide open receivers along the way. From a FF perspective Moore had his best day of the year notching 3 TDs in the game. He wasn't perfect but like most weeks once he settles in he can do a lot of damage. Moore overall on the day was effective early when he had chances but he only completed about 50% of his passes and in the 2nd half when Miami needed to pick up 1st downs they simply were not there. Moore also had a costly fumble on the exchange and an interception which helped spark the Patriots' comeback. Still he managed somewhere between 24-28 points in most fantasy leagues and if you had to start Moore you were absolutely thrilled with the results this weekend. What is Moore's future with the Miami Dolphins? At this point it would seem he likely will be the 2012 starter when they take the field unless they get extremely lucky in the draft or free agency.
Week 17 vs NYJ - Moore had a rough game and continues to show flashes of what he did briefly in Carolina while also making some head scratching decisions. He did a good job keeping the play alive on TE Charles Clay's fourth quarter touchdown pass. On the play, Moore cut left, pursued closely by two Jets defenders. He saw Jets ILB Josh Mauga fall and Clay suddenly open and delivered a sharp ball for a touchdown. His interceptions though were just bad throws, particularly one to Brian Hartline which Jets S Brodney Pool intercepted. On the play, hartline had a step on the coverage and Moore just flat out overthrew him, right into the waiting arms of Pool. It's that type of inaccuracy that makes it difficult to believe the Dolphins will build around Moore as a long term solution at quarterback.
