2011 Game Summaries

Week 1 - McCown's first week as Jacksonville's quarterback can be best described as steady. He was not called on to throw the ball often nor on many varied routes. Most of his completions came between the hash-marks and between 8 and 16 yards down field. That said, McCown showed deft touch in placing the ball only where his receivers could catch it. He also firmly commanded the huddle and helped balance the Jaguars offense, picking up 9 first downs through the air and pacing the game to favor the Jaguars in time of possession by a two to one margin. His best throw came on a 26 yard pass to Mike Thomas. On the play, McCown noticed Thomas slipping between a safety and a corner up the middle of the field. McCown threw the ball on target with just enough loft to get over it over the safety and to a diving Thomas. All in all McCown showed poise under center and patience in the pocket to protect the football and keep drives alive.

Week 2 - The McCown experiment caught fire and spun into a wall Sunday as the Jets were relentless in their pressure on the Jaguars quarterback. McCown never had a chance as the Jets pass rushers were able to get into the backfield early and often, while the secondary blanketed the receivers. McCown found himself on his nine yard line when Jets rookie NT Mohammad Wilkerson penetrated the pocket. McCown moved backwards into the end zone where Wilkerson took him down for the safety. McCown also got picked off a staggering four times, his first on a throw that sailed on him and went right into Jets CB Antonio Cromartie's hands. That throw, as well as a later interception, was thrown into triple coverage to boot. It was that kind of day for McCown and he was eventually pulled to give rookie Blaine Gabbert some playing time.
