Best Case
If Ashley Lelie gets an opportunity in a Mike Martz offense he could be deadly. Lelie is slated to back up Isaac Bruce and its not inconceivable that Bruce feels his soon to be age of 36. Unlike most of the other receivers on the 49er roster, Lelie has proven to be remarkably durable and given the frailty of some of the others, he could get opportunities by default.
Worst Case
Lelie is going to struggle to make the final 49er roster. Isaac Bruce and Bryant Johnson were signed in the offseason, Jason Hill is viewed as the future and Arnaz Battle is a coach favorite. Lelie is a one dimensional receiver, outside routes and little else. The 49ers attempted to break that mold in 2007 and it met with little success (10 catches in 15 games). Martz has challenged Lelie with a less than subtle warning to raise his game.
Outlook
Lelie is looking like the odd man out in the 49ers wide receiver scramble for a role in Mike Martz's offense. The fact they haven't cut him yet, means that they still see something there. Lelie has a 1000 yard season under his belt while in Denver and has above average speed. If Lelie can survive the purge, there are far too many questions with the other receivers in San Francisco to dismiss him out of hand, but it would surprise if he were to see significant playing time.
