2007 Game Summaries

Week 1 - Jones started the game for the Cowboys and had the majority of carries in the first half. He gained one first down on the ground and caught his only target for an 11 yard gain and another first down. He did not see much action in the second half, but he was able to break free on one carry for a 21 yard gain which resulted in a first down.

Week 2 - Jones broke a lot of tackles, but struggled against the swarming Miami defense. He had two long runs (10-15 yards) called back due to penalties. Jones saw little playing time on the major drives the Cowboys had during the third quarter. Barber was again taking almost all of the red zone snaps, while Jones became the main back when the Cowboys wanted to use the clock in the fourth quarter.

Week 3 - Jones didn't have much success against the Chicago run defense, averaging 3.7 yards on only seven carries. Despite his low number of rushing yards, he did add 29 yards receiving on two catches out of the backfield. His night could have been better if not for penalties committed by his offensive teammates. Early on in the second quarter, Jones had a 14 yard reception brought back due to a questionable illegal block in the back penalty called on Jason Whitten. Later on in the fourth quarter, he had a 22 yard run negated due to a holding penalty on Flozell Adams. It's worth noting that following that play Jones left the field of play after being looked at by the Dallas medical staff.

Week 4 - Jones led the Cowboys rushing attack, with 13 carries for 52 yards that included a two yard touchdown run on the club's first scoring drive of the game. He added one reception for 11 yards on his only target in the passing game. The touchdown run was a plus for Jones owners, because those short yardage scores usually go to his counterpart Barber.

Week 5 - Jones started at tailback, and though he ran with some pop, he was unable to exert his will on the Buffalo defense. It was not really Jones' fault, though, as he frequently had no place to run. The Bills defense stuffed Jones for two yards or less on half of his carries, and they very nearly trapped him in the end zone for a safety on the first two plays of the game. The former Notre Dame star was not involved at all in the passing game, and he had only one carry after the first Cowboys drive of the second half. It appears (from this game at least) that when the Cowboys are playing catch up, they prefer to have Marion Barber on the field.

Week 6 - Jones led the Cowboys with 51 yards on six attempts. 43 of them came on consecutive runs early in the second half. One each, play, Jones was able to burst through a big hole and get into the secondary. Jones ran hard and was able to break tackles. He would have benefited from more attempts.

Jones caught a two yard dumpoff from Romo early in the game. He had a 16 yard reception called back by a penalty on his other target.

Week 7 - Jones started the game, but did not get the majority of work. He started strong with four carries on the first drive, but managed just 5 more the rest of the game. He did catch all four of his passes and added 30 yards. However, the Cowboys seemed to go with Barber in crucial situations, and Barber again was the back used to run out the clock. With the Cowboys disregarding the running game, Jones' opportunity was limited.

Week 9 - Julius Jones started the game and carried the ball 13 times for 57 yards and a score. Jones caught all three of his targets for 22 yards. The Cowboys used Jones primarily in the first quarter, then seemed to prefer going to Barber as the game wore on. Jones had one carry at the goalline in the first quarter from the two yard line, where he got in for his only touchdown of the night.

Week 10 - Julius Jones and the Dallas rushing attack were slowed by a physical New York front, as they were only able to gain a total of 82, while not being able to put the ball over the goal line. Jones, the leading Dallas rusher, added a total of only 48 yards while adding no receptions and no targets.

Week 11 - Julius Jones started the game as per usual, and rotated series' with backup Marion Barber. He carried the ball nine times for 27 yards, and dropped his only target of the game. The Redskins rush defense was all over the place shutting down the Cowboys running game. Since Tony Romo had success going deep to Terrell Owens in the second half, Jones and the running game became less of a factor, though Jones did get most of his carries in the first quarter.

Week 12 - Jones ran very well also, and showed good ability to run in the open field at times. He also proved adept at turning short passes into good yardage plays. Jones also had the ball in his hands on 50 percent of the plays Dallas ran in the red zone, although he didn't manage to score.

Week 13 - Jones started the game and caught a short screen pass, and took it 21 yards on the first drive to help set up the Cowboys' first score. Romo and the passing game were very effective in the first half, and Jones only had five carries for 15 yards rushing. He started the second half with a 12 yard carry up the middle. But he would only have three more carries for negative one yard the rest of the game.

Week 14 - Jones is considered the starting back, but he does not appear to be the best back in Dallas. He runs slow to the hole and goes down easy. He was heavily involved on the first drive of the game, rushing five times for 23 yards, but was only seen in spot duty relief of Barber after that.

Week 15 - Julius Jones started the first Cowboys offensive series but ran for only five yards on seven carries. As the game went on, Marion Barber was used more frequently. The Eagles rush defense shut down the Cowboys running game, and as a result the Cowboys didn't feature the running game much in the second half. Jones had a nine yard carry nullified by a penalty.

Week 16 - Jones opened the game with the first three team carries, but as the Cowboys found themselves ahead and controlling the time of possession game, rode the hot hand of teammate Marion Barber III.

Week 17 - Jones was shut down, gaining only seven yards on eight carries. He was better in the passing game, hauling in two of his targets for 12 yards.

Week 19 - Jones was benched and only had three carries.
