Best Case

The upside for Hurd in 2008 is locking down the third receiver role, which assumes Terry Glenn isn't healthy enough to play this year. The third-year receiver showed improvement last year and enters this season with an edge on the other young receivers vying for playing time. While not the biggest guy (6-foot-2, 187), Hurd plays physically and can make plays in traffic, which suits him to the slot role in three-WR sets.

Worst Case

The Dallas coaches can't stop gushing about Miles Austin and Hurd needs a strong camp to secure his spot on the team. If Terry Glenn returns and Austin plays well, Hurd may be looking for a new job, or at best, he would be the team's WR5 and play on special teams.

Outlook

Hurd is a deep sleeper and shouldn't be on anyone's fantasy radar in redraft leagues. In dynasty drafts, Hurd is worth some consideration only because he's young (23) and both Terry Glenn (34) and Terrell Owens (35) are nearing the end of their careers.

2007 Game Summaries

Week 1 - Hurd was targeted once in each half. The first pass was uncatchable in the end zone. Hurd was responsible for the Cowboys' longest touchdown of the game, catching a 51 yard pass from Tony Romo.

Week 2 - Hurd caught all three balls thrown his way, but got called for offensive pass interference on his third reception, which was in the red zone. Dallas kicked a field goal after they lost ten yards.

Week 3 - Hurd's first big contribution on offense didn't come until the third quarter and was on a pass play where he didn't make the catch. His big block on Bears' S Adam Archuleta helped Terrell Owens pick up extra yards on a play that went for 35 yards. On the very next play of the drive, Hurd caught his only pass of the game on a 25 yard pass from Tony Romo.

Week 5 - Hurd saw the field when the Cowboys ran three WR sets. His one catch was a big one, as it set up a Dallas field goal on the last play of the first half. Hurd was also targeted once in the end zone, a play that was broken up by CB Terrence McGee.

Week 6 - Hurd was targeted once in the end zone on a quick pass, but Romo threw the ball too high for Hurd to reach it.

Week 10 - Hurd was a role player most of the day and wasn't a big contributor.

Week 11 - Sam Hurd entered the game in three receiver sets, and caught both of his targets for 28 yards. Both of his catches were on third down, and got first downs for the Cowboys offense.

Week 12 - Hurd was not much of a factor in this game.

Week 14 - Sam Hurd had little impact as the third wide out. Both of his receptions came on the final two drives when he was able make key first downs.

Week 15 - Sam Hurd played as the slot receiver, and though he put up zeros in the box score, was used frequently throughout the game. Hurd was targeted six times, twice as many as starter Patrick Crayton. In the first quarter Hurd had what looked like a 30 yard reception, but it was ruled incomplete after the ball popped out when he hit the ground. The Cowboys challenged the call, but the call was upheld and remained an incompletion.
