Game Summaries

Week 1 at ARI - Hill was under pressure for most of the day, and he made his share of throws that he would want back, but when he had to move the offense down the field in the fourth quarter, he did. It's very clear how Hill has gotten such a good W-L record with limited skills. Speaking of those limited skills, he hit Isaac Bruce in stride for a 50-yarder, dispelling notions that he has no deep arm. He did give up one fumble that would have been returned for a TD if it hadn't been blown dead, but considering the pressure he was under all day, he did great to limit his turnovers to only one on the day.

Week 2 vs SEA - Hill was efficient in the 49ers victory but did not throw a touchdown pass.  The San Francisco offense appears to run through Frank Gore more then through the passing game.  Hill completed 19 of 26 passes for a very efficient 144 yards.  His low yards per attempt was more of a result of the success of the run game and the fact that they will rely on his passing more for short, drive-extending tosses instead of deeper, game-breaking throws.  Hill appears locked in as the 49ers starting quarterback after a strong start where he has limited turnovers and kept drives alive.

Week 3 at MIN - Shaun Hill opened the game with the ball being knocked out of his hands and resulting in a sack and a fumble. He spent the rest of the game trying to recover and keep the 49ers in a position to win the game. His go-to guy was Vernon Davis, going to him for Medium and long range passes. While Hill managed the offense well, and kept the 49ers in the game the whole time, he never really appeared to be in control of the game. He was never able to convert on 3rd downs (0-11), and threw several bad passes, including the interception where the receiver fell down leaving the defender all alone to make the pick. On the second TD pass to Davis, Hill made an excellent strike -- threading the needle between three defenders to take the lead with only 8 minutes to go. He was clearly out of sync without Gore running the ball and never really established a consistent rhythm for the offense. Fantasy wise, he had a solid game but you would not have thought so if you watched the game.

Week 4 vs STL - Hill's numbers look a lot better on paper than they did in three dimensions against the Rams in Week 4. His first touchdown pass was a short fade down the middle of the field to TE Vernon Davis running a seam pattern, which looked way better than his deeper touchdown to Josh Morgan. Morgan's touchdown catch fluttered for what seemed like forever towards him, barely eluding two Rams as he caught the ball in the back right of the end zone for the score. Hill is an effective passer and leader of the offense -- putting up good enough efforts to help his team win most of the time. In his defense, he did throw a nice deep pass towards Josh Morgan in the second quarter that should have gone for a highlight reel 44-yard touchdown. He is a viable fantasy spot starter and a winning NFL QB who has a secure starting job and would be a nice bye week fill-in or backup fantasy quarterback.

Week 5 vs ATL - Hill never seemed to get comfortable in this game. He faced a lot of pressure from the first drive to the last, and looked antsy in the pocket on most dropbacks. The 49ers tried a lot of quick timing throws, but Hill's rhythm was off because of defenders in his face, and sometimes he didn't seem to be on the same page as his receivers. Hill did show good instincts to pull the ball down and run when nothing was there and he got flushed from the pocket, ripping off some good gains. The coaching staff also trusted him enough to call a pass on an early 4th and 1, and Hill made the play. His interception came off a Mike Peterson deflection, but the pass wasn't going to be a completion even if Peterson hadn't gotten a hand on it. Hill's throwing mechanics got sloppier as the game went on, and his deep balls weren't even close to being completions. He was a competitive gamer, but it was clear that he didn't have the ability to get the 49ers back in this game.

Week 7 at HOU - Shaun Hill had an awful game on Sunday against Houston. Hill's reputation so far this season has been as a game-manager who minimizes mistakes and takes very few downfield chances. Unfortunately, that style put the 49ers in a 21 point hole early on and only produced 50 yards of total offense. Hill did not try to throw the ball downfield in to coverage and finished the day with a roughly 4-yards-per-attempt average, which simply isn't good enough in the NFL. Hill looked tentative in making decisions despite the fact that he was getting a good amount of time in the pocket. The Texans linebackers were disguising their blitzes well enough that Hill was having a hard time keying in on where the "hot" route was compared to the pass-rush. And as the San Francisco running game failed to produce in the first half, Hill was left with little choice but to take the snap and settle for an underneath pass that resulted in little positive gain. Hill was replaced at halftime by former #1 Overall pick Alex Smith, who performed admirably in Hill's absence.
