Best Case

In many ways, Chad Henne appears to be a quarterback capable of being a good starter in the NFL. He has proto-typical size at 6-3 and 228 pounds and displays excellent arm strength to make any throw on the field. When he gets good pass protection, he is very poised and makes good decisions on the field. When he is confident and on his game, there is a certain swagger about his game that looks like a top-tier quarterback. He had three 300-yard passing games in 2010 proving if the team allows him to open it up and throw the ball he can have success down the field.

Worst Case

There is no question that Henne was a disappointment last year in Miami. He had relatively high expectations going into his second season as a starting quarterback and he failed to deliver the goods. He was horribly inconsistent a year ago, throwing for 300-yards in one week and 229 yards in the next two weeks combined. His yards per attempt is not good enough for a dependable NFL quarterback and he has thrown more interceptions than touchdowns in each of his first two seasons as a starter. With only 15 touchdowns on 490 passing attempts, it is clear he is struggling to get the ball into the endzone.

Outlook

Without question this is the season that Henne must elevate his play and take reins of this offense once in for all. If he does, he will have an opportunity to put up really solid numbers in 2011 throwing the ball to Brandon Marshall, Reggie Bush, Devone Bess and Anthony Fasano. The talent is there is Miami IF Henne can grab those reins and go with it. At this time he is only battling Matt Moore for the starting job and that should be a battle Henne wins going away.

2011 Game Summaries

Week 1 - Lost in the shuffle of all the Tom Brady records was the solid performance of Chad Henne. He looked pretty good in the 2nd half of the preseason and so far it looks like it is translating into the regular season. Chad opened the game with a sensational drive that ate up over 7 minutes of clock but he also burned 2 timeouts and took a needless sack near the goal line before he had a defining moment. Henne took the ball on a 3rd and goal from the 10, had the defense spread out, he simply tucked it and had a convoy with him on the way to the end zone and leaped the final few yards and then jumped up to spike that football and release a long off season of criticism where he said very little. Chad let his play do the talking and he also was 9/10 on the 1st 2 drives of the game so he was equally effective. He still has to work on some decision making but he didn't force anything and never made the big mistake. His interception was meaningless on the last play of the game so pay it no attention other than a deduction in fantasy leagues. Coach Sparano seemed very happy with Henne and the offense. This guy is a possibility in some leagues on the waiver wire. If you drafted Garrard, McNabb, or have another back up QB that you are not happy with, Chad Henne might be a nice pick up. he won't throw for 400+ yards every week but he looks to be serviceable for bye weeks. Owners also want to note that Miami could not run the ball inside the red zone and that is going to be a major problem for a team that prides itself on running the football. However that means that Henne is going to have to create those touchdowns on his own and on this night that was 2 thru the air and 1 on the ground. he is off to a great start, don't overlook him with all the Brady hype in this game. Also the Pats look a little vulnerable to the pass so keep that in mind over the next many weeks.

Week 2 - In a game where the success of both teams rose and fell with the play of their offensive lines, Chad Henne had a rough time early in the game. On plays when his line kept him clean, Henne was accurate and threw the ball with good velocity. However, he struggled whenever pressure drew near, not always giving his receivers an opportunity to catch the ball. He was especially poor while having to throw on the run. In some cases the Dolphins brought on a sixth offensive lineman in place of a tight end to try to improve their pass blocking. His receivers did not always help him out. Receiver Brandon Marshall dropped what would have been a 21 yard touchdown pass. Henne's interception was caused by a hit to his arm as he was throwing rather than poor decision making. The Dolphins threw the ball on many of their red zone plays, and their lone touchdown came on tough running after the catch by Marshall.

Week 3 - Certainly at times he looks perfectly capable of running the offense. He was completing about 75-80% of his passes until late in the game. In fact Henne was pretty smart in how he managed the game and went about his business. He found Brian Hartline a couple times on deep routes up the left sideline as Marshall was drawing Joe Haden who blanketed him most of the day. Henne's problem is always magnified because he does not produce in the red zone when it really counts and then also late in the game when Miami needed a FG and was set up well at about midfield, but Henne could not complete a single pass at that point and then threw the interception to end the game. 250 yards is a pretty average day right now in the NFL, it doesn't weigh as much as the other QBs that are throwing it for 350 yards a week it seems. Henne was efficient but Miami only scored 1 touchdown all day and had to settle for 4 FG attempts. That's partly coaching but he still lacks the big play ability especially on 3rd down. Keep an eye on Henne who is in no jeopardy of losing his job but his head coach is going to be on the hot seat very fast this week and with San Diego on the road next week you might see Miami at 0-4 and possibly looking at a coaching change.
