Game Summaries

Week 6 vs MIN - Hanie replaced Cutler for the final series of the game for Chicago. He never attempted a pass and simply handed the ball off to Marion Barber for the final six plays of the game.

Week 10 vs DET - Hanie came in for the final series of the game for Chicago and just handed the ball off to Barber for the final seven plays of the game.

Week 12 at OAK - Hanie had a rough outing on his first NFL start but there were a few bright moments at the end of the game for him to build off of. It all started in the first half where he threw three picks. The first INT was just a horrible decision by Hanie. Hanie was heavily pressured; subsequently he rolled out to the right and lobbed a pass to Forte. Forte had two defenders around him, and the ball was easily picked off by DB Stanford Routt. The second INT was not much better as he badly overthrew his RB Matt Forte, and S Michael Huff was playing center field for the easy interception. The third interception was at a pivotal point in the game. The Bears were driving with less than 30 seconds to go in the first half and were 2nd & 1 from inside the Raiders 15 yard line. The called play was a screen play, and LB Kamerion Wimbley read the play and made a spectacular interception, taking the ball 73 yards to set up a last second FG for the Raiders. Hanie should have been more careful with the ball but that interception was more of a great play by the defender than a miscue by Hanie. Hanie had a nice 29 yard TD pass to WR Johnny Knox in the first half on a quick slant. Knox used his speed to create separation from the defender and went in untouched for an easy score. Hanie also used his legs well and even converted a 3rd & 18 play with a scramble. Hanie finally came alive in the second half. He orchestrated two FG drives and a TD drive in the 4th quarter. Even though he had a rough first half, Hanie was able to forget his bad play and looked decent in the second half. On a 3rd & 16 play with less than 3 minutes in the game, Hanie completed a 81 yard bomb to WR Johnny Knox. That was an impressive play and showed some guts to trust his WR to make a play in that situation. It was nice to see Hanie come back from his putrid start; he resembled an adequate NFL QB in the second half.

Week 13 vs KC - Caleb Hanie showed that if the Bears intend to make the playoffs without Jay Cutler and Matt Forte, that they are going to have to do it running the ball and with big plays on defense and special teams. Hanie simply doesn't have the experience to make the correct throws and avoid the pressure when the line breaks down. Kansas City came into the game with just 13 sacks on the season. Due to poor line blocking and Hanie's inability to recognize trouble and escape or throw the ball away, he was sacked seven times, and avoided several more by running for his life. He was never able to get the offense into any kind of rhythm and the Bears were 0 for 11 on third down and 0 for 2 on fourth down for the day. He missed a wide open Earl Bennett in the second quarter on a pass that would have been an easy TD and put Chicago up 7-0 because Hanie overthrew him. At the end of the third quarter, with the Bears trying to tie the game, Hanie took two red zone sacks to kill the drive after having first and goal from the seven. The sacks pushed Chicago way back, and they missed the 41 yard field goal, coming away with no points. To be completely fair, Hanie's interceptions were not completely his fault. The first was an underthrown ball, but Johnny Knox was working one on one and never adjusted to come back to the ball. The defender was able to go up and simply push Knox out of the way for the easy pick. His second came on a crossing route to Roy Williams that should have been a TD. Williams bobbled the ball and it was knocked out of his hands. He wasn't able to come up with it, but the defenders tipped it again and made the pick in the end zone. The third INT was on the final play of the game -- a desperation pass that was well underthrown and easily intercepted to end the game.

Week 14 at DEN - It was another disappointing outing for Hanie as he played over 4 quarters of football and managed to gain just 115 yards passing. The Bears game plan seemed to be to take the ball out of his hands as much as possible and rely on the running game. When he did drop back to pass, he did not have much time and often threw the ball off target due to the pressure from the Broncos pass rush. Hanie was sacked 4 times in the game and used his athleticism to avoid a couple more. He did not turn the ball over and gave his team a chance to win, but the Broncos rallied to tie up the game late and then win in overtime.

Week 15 vs SEA - Hanie was an accurate passer and read the zone coverage well... when he had time in the pocket. When pressured, which was most of the time, he was simply brutal. He was often forced out of the pocket, but Hanie is mobile enough that he was able to gain positive yardage while scrambling on most occasions. But when he threw the ball under pressure? Oh boy, where to start? Two of his three interceptions became defensive touchdowns, and there was nothing lucky about either of them. On the first, he was reeling backwards and dumped the ball a few feet ahead -- right in the numbers of a Seattle lineman, who easily held on and ran it in. And no, there was not a Bear within ten yards of the throw. On the other pick six, Hanie threw directly into the zone coverage, again right in the numbers of the defender. On his touchdown pass, Hanie made a nice read. As his running back gained separation in the red zone, he placed it nicely for the easy scamper into the end zone. Bottom line, it was all about pressure. When the Seahawks brought it, Hanie was awful.

Week 16 at GB - Caleb Hanie was benched in this game for a guy who was coaching High School Football just five weeks ago. His NFL Career is probably over.
