2006 Projections
Positives
Derrick Hamilton was rated the player with the best football instincts in the ACC by Street and Smith’s magazine for the 2004 draft, where he was taken by the 49ers in the 3rd round. Hamilton is big, strong and has good hands. He has excellent body control, blocks well and excels as a kick returner. Hamilton had a firm grasp on the No.3 role last year before suffering a season ending knee injury. He had impressed newly arrived head coach Mike Nolan last year and if fit would be a strong chance to remain on the roster and win the No.3 role.
Negatives
It’s all or nothing for Derrick Hamilton this year and all reports indicate it may be nothing. One year after suffering his knee injury he still has a limp, or gait and at best will be 90-95% of what he was before the injury. Hamilton is supremely talented, but needing game experience. After two years in the NFL he has a total of one target and zero receptions. It’s doubtful the team will carry him while he learns the position, when there are plenty of other young options on the team.
Outlook
If Hamilton is kept on the 49ers roster it’s a strong indication in the faith the team places on his ability. Two years into his career and with nothing to show for it, Hamilton will be hoping his body doesn’t betray him again. If Hamiton has recovered from his torn ACL, then the No.3 role is there for the taking. Hamilton has the ability to be the marquee receiver the 49ers need, but opportunity is fading fast. If Hamilton is fit enough, look out for him in training camp and preseason. If the 49ers don’t think he’s up to being the No.3 receiver this year, then he probably will be cut.
