2007 Game Summaries
Week 1 - Grossman never established any kind of a rhythm. He was drilled by Shaun Phillips early in the contest for one of the most vicious hits you'll see all season, but it didn't seem to affect him as far as injury. Sideline reporter Pam Oliver mentioned that Grossman was seen shaking his hand at one point, but it was never addressed again. Despite that hit and several other sacks throughout the game, his offensive line actually afforded him plenty of time to throw for the most part. His receivers were able to get open more often than not, but he just didn't look very comfortable. He misfired on a number of passes, and a lack of communication doomed several others. On a deep ball to Bernard Berrian late in the first half, the receiver stopped his route short, which led to the interception. Still, it wasn't all bad luck that did in the Bears QB. In fact, he actually enjoyed a bit of good luck on a later series when he fumbled the ball away but caught a lucky bounce when it went right into the waiting arms of his own RB, Adrian Peterson. It isn't fair to pin this loss on Grossman alone because it's not like he was the only reason for the loss; still, he didn't do very much to help his team win either.
Week 2 - Grossman displayed both his good side and his bad side during the game. The good side was on display during the lone Bear touchdown drive as he led the team down the field and completing a touchdown pass on a tackle eligible play. His two interceptions were on poor throws off of his back foot, and he was off target on deep throws. He still is very up and down and much like some games last year, the Bears seem to win in spite of him.
Week 3 - Despite the poor outing by Grossman, he did find some success in moving the ball for the Chicago offense. On the Bears' second drive of the game, Grossman was effective, completing five of seven passes for 53 yards in leading Chicago to a field goal. His only other scoring drive came on Chicago's first drive of the second half. Down seven and facing a third and 10 from their own 14, Grossman picked up a big first down after rushing for 12 yards. On the very next play, he completed a pass to Desmond Clark for 52 yards and followed that up with a 21 yard completion to Greg Olsen. With the good though also comes the bad when you're talking about Grossman. Through out the night errant passes fell incomplete and poor decisions led to three interceptions as Grossman finished the game with a quarterback rating of 27.5.
Week 10 - Grossman entered the game in the second quarter in relief of the injured Brian Griese, and was a big reason why Chicago was able to come away with a win. Grossman and the Bears came right back at the Raiders, who had just kicked a field goal to go up 6-3, connecting with WR Bernard Berrian on a 59 yard touchdown pass to give Chicago the lead. Grossman made a nice throw on the play and in his time on the field, looked pretty comfortable in the pocket. With the injury to Griese and Grossman's play against the Raiders, he could have won his job back. Monitor this situation throughout the week.
Week 11 - Grossman's return to the lineup went well, but he came just short in the end. He was throwing well all day, but when the pressure was on to catch up in the second half, he was sacked five times and lost a crucial fumble that could have been avoided.
Week 12 - Grossman struggled for much of this game until connecting with Bernard Berrian in the final minute to tie the game up. Grossman was making crisp throws late in the game, but turned the ball over three times earlier, including two fumbles. Grossman finished with a 56.8 passer rating by completing 52 percent of his passes for an average gain of 5.8 yards per attempt.
Week 13 - Rex Grossman threw for 296 passing yards on 25 of 46 attempts, and did not turn the ball over in this game. Despite being sacked six times in this game and enduring the Giants fierce pass rush throughout, Grossman looked composed in the pocket and didn't make any bad throws in the game. In the second quarter Grossman found Devin Hester streaking down the middle of the field, and threw a nice pass, but Hester misjudged the ball and let it hit him in the shoulder pad. That would have accounted for an easy 81 yard touchdown, putting the Bears up 14-0 had Hester not dropped the pass. Bernard Berrian seemed to frequently get open deep down the left sideline, however Grossman was only able to hit him once for 50 yards on a perfectly thrown pass in tight coverage. Otherwise Grossman's deep targets were generally overthrown. Grossman's loan score of the game came on the first drive, where he found Desmond Clark wide open in the back of the end zone on a play action fake to Adrian Peterson.
Week 14 - Grossman was injured on the second series of the game when the Redskins defender hit his left knee while throwing. It looked like it could be a significant injury. He did not return to the game.
