Game Summaries

Week 1 vs NYG - Grossman had a very solid day that makes head coach Mike Shanahan look very smart for making him the starter. Grossman started off shakey as he was hit often and threw many incompletions. Grossman overthrew a wide open Gaffney deep also but things started to click for the man who looks to have revitalised his career in Washington. Grossman showed he had great chemistry with his recievers. His passes looked almost flawless at times as he threw all of the route tree to numerous Washington recievers and kept the Giant defense guessing and unable to stop him. Grossman had a gunslinger mentality and got huge chunks of yards down the field rather than a dink and dunk approach. He shot many high but catchable passes over the middle and threw perfect in stride passes to his recievers on in/out routes all day. Grossman was let down by his recievers at times by drops. Gaffney had one and WR Armstrong had two drops including a huge downfield pass which was dissapointing at the time. Lucky for Grossman, it did not matter. The only flaw in his game reared its ugly head towards the end as poor ball security led to a fumble inside the Redskins own half which the Giants could not capitalize on. Grossman was more than efficient and stated his case to remain QB of the Redskins.

Week 2 vs ARI - Grossman was able to move the ball well all day, but turned it over twice in key situations, making this game closer than it needed to be, although one of the picks was not his fault. He had good protection, was decisive, and spread the ball around to keep the defense off balance. His greatest strength was actually the running game. When it was firing on all cylinders, he was able to take full advantage with a decent play action, which was called several times with success. Grossman never looked like a superstar, he was just slow-and-steady, with excellent composure under pressure. One great example: He was able to get a screen pass off accurately as a defender was literally in mid-air diving toward him. Grossman's deficiencies did show late in the game, as he did have trouble against the nickel defense. He trusts his receivers and take chances -- a double edged sword -- and he spreads the ball around well. The coaches trusted him to go for it on fourth down in the red zone down eight in the fourth quarter when they could have just settled for a field goal, and Grossman delivered with a touchdown throw to Santana Moss. The key to his success are a balanced attack and the fact that he has 3-4 reliable targets to choose from on any given play.

Week 3 at DAL - Grossman's final fumble on a blindside hit by Anthony Spencer will get a lot of talk this week, as many will wonder if the "old" Rex Grossman is returning. In fairness, Rex wasn't that bad. The Cowboys defense has played pretty well this season and kept the pressure on him all night. And while he does have a couple options, Grossman doesn't really have any bigtime playmakers on offense. He played ok, aside from one errant throw, and had his team in position to win the game, had it not been for a long Dallas drive at the end. When Grossman got the ball back with no time left, he immediately got Dallas out to midfield, but then DC Ryan turned up the heat, and Grossman ended the game by fumbling the ball and turning it over. There's no need to panic in Washington, as Grossman isn't the major problem on this team. A lack of firepower will eventually be the undoing in Washington. Grossman for the most part completed most of his passes, found the open man and had a solid game until the very end.

Week 4 at STL - Grossman's day was a microcosm of his career, a few good plays and a couple very, very bad decisions. Today's game started out almost tailor made for him a lot of passes and bootlegs called to get him into a rhythm. The way Rex went through his progressions it almost seemed painful for him, in a day where the receivers were running open most of the day. The highlight of the day was a great touch pass to Santana Moss in the back of the end zone for a 6-yard touchdown showing the talent and chemistry the two have with each other. For the most part Grossman was never really pressured. Fantasy football owners need to be reminded that this situation is fluid meaning he didn't make the plays needed to change the game for the Redskins. The Rams secondary is bad and when passes where completed the plays where rarely contested. Grossman failed to stretch the field and be aggressive all day. The two interceptions thrown one bounced right off the hands of Santana Moss directly into the Rams defenders hands. The second was all on Rex Grossman a very bad play call mixed with a very forced throw on play action directly to James Laurinaitis.

Week 6 vs PHI - Whereas Vick looked bothered by the pressure, Grossman looked downright skittish. Even when he wasn't being pressured he had happy feet in the pocket and made poor decisions. After a couple of short passes to start, Grossman made his first mental mistake on a deep ball to Fred Davis in double coverage. The throw was actually on target, but there was just too much traffic and the Eagles had their first interception of the day. The first drive of the 2nd quarter wasn't much better as Grossman overthrew Roy Helu on one throw and threw the ball into the hands of Dominique Rodgers-Cromartie on the next. Luckily for Grossman, Cromartie dropped this INT. The next time Grossman decided to look deep, the result was the same but the reason much different. Jabar Gaffney had a step or two on his defender but Grossman threw the ball well short. While the first pick was a decent throw with poor judgment, here Grossman simply underthrew an open WR. On the next drive Grossman threw high to Santana Moss on a 4 yard pass and the boo birds let him hear it, but Moss's body language said so much more. The only target Grossman was able to consistently hit was Fred Davis who mostly took 2-3 yard throws and turned them into 10+ yard gains. Grossman's first completion to a WR came with 1:38 left in the half and it was again underthrown to Donte Stallworth. He should have been picked off a third time on a deep ball to Santana Moss but the Eagles' DB dropped the pass. On his final play of the half, the only thing he couldn't do was turn the ball over or take a sack and he took a sack after having plenty of time to go through his progressions. Grossman started the second half with a really good throw deep off a flea flicker, but then on an out to Santana Moss overthrew him terribly and the 'Skins had to settle for another field goal. With 7:15 left in the third quarter his defense gave him of gift, with a possession starting at the Eagles 18. On the second play of the drive Grossman went to Davis one too many times in traffic and was picked off for the third time. Upon getting the ball back Grossman threw his 4th pick on a deep ball to Gaffney and it would be his last throw of the game (season?).

Week 10 at MIA - He was a mix of good and bad and the bad was unfortunately what most will look at. The truth is he had a very limited running game to help him set up the pass but Grossman was effective on play action for most of the day. His 1st interception was not all his fault as Hankerson is a rookie and learning but that's why you gotta put the ball on the money. And considering that Hankerson had a pretty terrific all around day you have to place some of the burden on Grossman. Rex was 4 for 4 to start the game and looked sharp before the interception. He started running for his life at times and was sacked a bunch on the day. His 2nd interception was very badly timed as Washington was driving down 13-9 and he tried to connect with Gaffney but he stars down his receivers and Karlos Dansby was happy to pick that pass off. Rex was able to get the ball down the field better than Beck has done but he also has ill timed interceptions as he now has 6 TD and 11 interceptions on the season.

Week 11 vs DAL - Despite a couple mistakes, Grossman had a very solid day. The numbers look pretty good, and so did Rex. Early on, Grossman and the Redskins were trying the play-action, but the Dallas defense wasn't falling for it, as they didn't respect the run at all. Grossman missed a couple passes, and really floated an out to Gaffney, but after that he settled into a nice groove. In the 2nd quarter, he hit David Andersen for a 22 yard pass on a wheel route, and then a few plays later ran a QB draw up the middle for a touchdown. Then after getting the ball in great field position, he closed out the first half by hitting Jabar Gaffney for a 16 yard touchdown. Gaffney made a great move, wiggled away from a defender and caught a perfectly delivered strike by Grossman. Then Grossman started the 3rd quarter by continuing his hot play. He fired another ball to Gaffney on the right sideline for 28, had a beautiful play-action pass that finally worked, hitting Fred Davis for a tough 28 yard catch and run, and then threw a beautiful fade pass to Anthony Armstrong in the back of the endzone for what could have been a touchdown, but Alan Ball made a great play to get just a piece of it, and Armstrong couldn't pull it in, though he probably should have caught it. As the game went on, Grossman's hot streak wore off, and a horrible throw on playaction was intercepted by Scandrick. When Grossman got the ball with just about 5 minutes left and 90 yards to go, it seemed unlikely that Washington had a chance. But Grossman led an amazing drive, going 90 minutes for a TD. He started the drive with a 20 yard playaction pass to Stallworth, who became his big receiver towards the end of the game. Then he hit Gaffney on a 15 yard out to get into range. Finally with 14 seconds left, he dropped a fade pass right into the arms of Stallworth for a HUGE touchdown, which tied the game and sent it into overtime. In overtime, Grossman picked up where he left off, firing a ball to Stallworth and then hitting Gaffney for 12 yards as the Skins entered field goal territory. On third and 7 though, Grossman couldn't get Washington any closer and he took a 1 yard sack, forcing Graham Gano into a long field goal try, that didn't go in. It's too bad for Grossman, because he really played well in this one. But it is something to build on for the Redskins.

Week 12 at SEA - Grossman showed good touch and timing early on. He was obviously thrilled to have Santana Moss back as he targeted him on 3 of his first 5 throws and routinely throughout the day. However, it was Moss that dropped a perfectly thrown deep ball on the Skins first drive. Grossman also had a good connection with TE Fred Davis on the first drive, hitting him first with a beautifully thrown 31 yard pass and then a much easier 2 yard touchdown pass. The touchdown came off play-action and due to terrible coverage was a relatively easy throw. Grossman looked most comfortable when rolling out left or right as it kept the Seahawks pass rush at bay. His first interception came on a pass to Gaffney that was just a little too soft and slightly behind the receiver as he streaked across the field. He threw a very similar ball on his next throw, but this time Gaffney had cleared his man by 10 yards and was able to slow to make the catch. Gaffney cost Grossman a TD later in the drive, stepping out of bounds in the middle of his route before he caught the negated TD pass. Later in the same drive, Grossman threw a pretty nice fade route to Gaffney, who only got one hand up and saw it bounce off his hand. On his first throw of the third quarter, Grossman again went deep for Moss, who fell down. It probably wouldn't have mattered as there were three Seahawks in the vicinity and one of them easily picked it off. Grossman spent most of the rest of the third quarter with defenders in his face and very little success. A switch flipped in the 4th and Grossman was back on fire. Grossman completed 7 of 9 passes in the 4th quarter including a 50 yard bomb to Anthony Armstrong for the go ahead score. It was single coverage, and he gave his receiver a chance to make a play. Grossman started and finished the game extremely well and in the end there was more good than bad.

Week 13 vs NYJ - Coming off a good outing against the Seattle Seahawks, Grossman struggled against a fired up Jets defense. The low point came when he was sacked by former Bills and current Jets linebacker Aaron Maybin and fumbled the ball. The turnover led to a Jets touchdown. Grossman's receivers were pretty well blanketed all day and the quarterback found himself sacked twice, hit multiple times and generally pressured quite often. Once the Jets locked down tight end Fred Davis, Grossman was out of targets and out of time.

Week 14 vs NE - Grossman was under constant pressure throughout this game, but did fairly well in response, keeping the Redskins alive all the way down to their last possession. The day began inauspiciously, though, for Grossman and the Redskins when he held on to the ball a beat too long and was hit from behind in the end zone. The hit jarred the ball loose and it was recovered in the end zone for a TD by the Patriots, opening the scoring. Grossman looked good on play action passing, doing most of his damage feeding off of the solid running game of RB Roy Helu. He used play action to open up former Florida Gator teammate WR Jabar Gaffney for the Skins' first TD. He had trouble a couple of times getting rid of the ball on time, resulting in sacks and the critical opening score of the game. Grossman also was bailed out of a critical INT by a roughing the passer penalty, but only managed to keep the Redskins in FG range to take a 3-point lead late in the first half. Grossman would tie the game in the 3rd quarter, hitting WR David Anderson on a 6-yard TD pass to answer a score on the Patriots' first possession of the second half. Grossman made some quality throws down the stretch under pressure as the Redskins attempted a late comeback, but it would ultimately end in disappointment as Washington would make one final, critical error. After seemingly tossing the game-tying TD pass to WR Santana Moss (the TD was nullified by an offensive pass interference penalty on Moss), Grossman completed a quick pass to get some of the penalty yardage back. On the next play, though, he completed a short crossing route to Moss, but before he could completely secure the catch, the ball was punched out and intercepted by LB Jerod Mayo, ending the Redskins' chances.

Week 15 at NYG - Pretty rough start as he was intercepted twice in the 1st quarter on long pass attempts. The reality is they were just like a punt except in the stat column for owners. Grossman doesn't seem to get bogged down when he throws interceptions and he continued to march Washington down the field going on a very long drive to close the 1st quarter and enter the 2nd quarter culminating with a 20 yard TD strike to Santa Moss. He held his composure and despite several mistakes managed to lead the Skins to a victory. Washington coaches did a nice job of not asking Grossman to throw a lot more after they established a 23-3 lead going into the 4th quarter. Rex is a boom or bust pick if you need to use him at this stage. He'll make a few big plays, a few TDs but he also is prone to turnovers which relegate a lot of the positives with him.

Week 16 vs MIN - Grossman had a decent day but had two costly turnovers in the game. The first was a sack-strip fumble early in the game that led to a Vikings field goal. Grossman did not feel the pressure in time, and he really held on to the ball too long on the play. The second was an awful interception, which he badly over threw his target late in the game. This too led to points from his opponent. He also had another badly thrown ball that should have been another interception but the defender dropped it. However Grossman seemed to have a good rapport with his number two receiver, WR Jabar Gaffney. Grossman found him in the end zone on a really nice throw and even better reception in the end zone. Grossman showed good patience on the play, pump faking and allowing his receiver a little time to get open for the score. Grossman had another long play to Gaffney that could have gone for a score but Gaffney just stepped out of bounds as he was trying to tight rope down the side line. Grossman tried to get the ball to his number one target, WR Santana Moss but Moss was well covered during the game. Grossman found Moss late in the game for a couple receptions in garbage time but other than that the duo was shut down. The Redskins ran the ball well, and the offense was most successful going through rookie RB Evan Royster in his NFL start. This seemed to lower Grossman's production but this was offset late in the game when the Redskins were forced to throw a ton to catch up and preserve the clock. All and all not a bad game from Grossman but not as good as the stats might show.

Week 17 at PHI - Rex Grossman had an overall poor game on Sunday vs. the Eagles with a depleted team that had very few weapons left. The Redskins played with an overall low sense of urgency and energy. Grossman was under constant pressure in this game from PHI front 7 and he got hit very frequently on his drop backs. A high number of his passes were impacted by the pressure as he was hit as soon as he released the ball and these passes fell to the dirt. Grossman also was looking to get rid of the ball in any way possible and threw deep targets that ended up nowhere near his receiver, likely as a tactic to avoid taking the sack. Grossman tried to hook up deep to WR Moss early in the game with a well thrown bomb over the middle but Moss could not make the play and it fell to the ground. Grossman also had a bizarre interception where the ball got batted and tipped into the air on a deep pass, ultimately getting picked off the Eagles DBs. He made a couple of nice throws over the middle to WR Moss against the blitz, after taking a good hit. Grossman's stat line was largely saved by a screen pass to RB Helu that was taken to the house. Helu caught the short pass and benefitted from an extremely well blocked play, weaving his way around the few defenders that were even in a position to try and make the tackle. PHI teed off on Grossman in passing situations and his lack of weapons in the passing game was evident as he forced the ball time and time again into WR Moss. He was not accurate from the pocket and had far too many incompletions as he threw the ball away wildly at times to avoid getting sacked.
