Outlook
Looking to upgrade their pass rush, the Jets spent the #6 overall pick on Vernon Gholston. Although he played defensive end at Ohio State, the Jets will convert him to OLB in their primarily 3-4 defense. Gholston is an extremely athletic player who also tied the highest bench press score at the NFL combine, so he should have the strength to hold up against the run. While still somewhat raw and inconsistent as a pass rusher, he has the potential to be very good after a year or two of development. He probably won't have the same type of impact that DeMarcus Ware and Shawne Merriman have had for their respective teams, but he should compete for a starting job early on and that will give him an edge over most other rookie LBs. Playing OLB in a 3-4 also limits his upside, however, so he probably won't be much more than a LB4 or so in most leagues and scoring systems.
