2008 Projections

Best Case

Old man time just hasn't caught up to Joey Galloway since he arrived in Tampa Bay - he's strung together 3 straight 1000+ yards-receving seasons, with 23 TDs during that time span - whether it is Chris Simms or Jeff Garcia (or somebody else) throwing the passes for Jon Gruden. With little in the way of reinforcements arriving via free agency or the draft during the off-season, it looks like Galloway will remain the team's #1 WR again during 2008. That should mean that Galloway remains in the 1000+ yards per season club, with a landing somewhere in the top 20 among all fantasy WRs again this year - if he manages to grab double-digit TDs, he could sneak into the top 10 at his position.

Worst Case

Galloway isn't a youngster anymore, with 13 years in the league under his belt - he'll be 37 by the end of the season. There has to be a limit to the amount of gas in his tank - this could be the year he hits the proverbial wall. It's been 3 years since he put up double-digit TDs, and 1000 yards looks like his ceiling - there isn't a lot of upside to him in fantasy terms at this point in his career.

Outlook

Galloway is positioned to make another run at 1000 yards receiving, and will likely be a solid WR2 for fantasy owners again this season.

2007 Game Summaries

Week 1 - Galloway was the only real threat in Tampa Bay's passing game. He was the most targeted receiver with nine, hauling in five receptions for 72 yards. Galloway also had a big punt return that was called back for penalty.

Week 2 - Galloway continued his abuse of the New Orleans secondary, finishing with four receptions for 135 yards and two touchdowns, from 69 and 24 yards out. He needed just five targets to reach those numbers, averaging over 33 yards per reception. Galloway shows no signs of slowing down, and seems to have good chemistry working with QB Jeff Garcia.

Week 3 - Galloway was targeted four times in the game, catching all four passes for 42 yards. While he did not come through with any of the big plays he's accustomed to producing, three of his four receptions netted first downs. Galloway did get hit hard across the middle and appeared shaken up, so owners will want to keep an eye on his injury status for next week.

Week 4 - Galloway was basically shut down the entire game. His first target was not until the fourth quarter. Galloway caught one pass for seven yards.

Week 5 - Galloway dropped a couple of receptions that could have got the Buccaneers going. He was the receiver Jeff Garcia looked for in tough situations, only he could not convert against the stingy Colts defense. Galloway beat the Colts defense down the middle of the field in the fourth quarter but Garcia's throw was under-thrown.

Week 6 - Galloway was targeted five times, catching four passes for 97 yards and a 69 yard touchdown. The play was typical Galloway, splitting coverage and getting behind the defense for a big play.

Week 7 - Galloway had a very quiet day, as most of the deep routes were eliminated by Detroit defenders. The one time Galloway actually did get open deep downfield, QB Jeff Garcia didn't see him and instead checked off to someone underneath. Despite the quiet afternoon, it was a milestone game for Galloway as he went over 10,000 yards receiving for his career.

Week 8 - Galloway looked very sharp in this game. Although he was going up against a very good secondary, he showed he could get open deep as well as run good intermediate routes. Ten of his targets were either on intermediate or deep routes, and he was overthrown a few times, while at others Jacksonville's defensive backs managed to recover in enough time to deflect passes as they arrived. Galloway was the primary receiver for Tampa Bay and they showed they have several different plays designed to help him get open, among them one where he caught a long pass and outran the secondary easily for his touchdown.

Week 9 - Galloway scored on a 37 yard touchdown on a deep up the middle throw in the first quarter. He was targeted nine times by Garcia with many of them crossing routes over the middle.

Week 11 - Joey Galloway was only targeted twice in the game, but made the most of it. He caught both balls thrown his way for 63 yards, including a 44 yard touchdown reception. On the touchdown grab, he made a great double move that gave him separation from DB DeAngelo Hall and Galloway was able to bring down the Garcia pass to complete the long score.

Week 12 - Galloway finished with just two receptions for 21 yards, but his day could have been much bigger with better quarterback play. He got separation twice, and was open downfield, but was missed on both plays that could have been scores. Washington made stopping Galloway a priority, and used deep coverage with their safeties throughout the ballgame.

Week 13 - Joey Galloway was a nightmare for the Saints. Galloway continued to build on his strong history against New Orleans with seven receptions for 159 yards that included a 60 yard reception that set up a Buccaneers touchdown. Six of his receptions resulted in first downs and he was targeted four times on third downs.

Week 14 - Joey Galloway was targeted eight times, and caught six passes for 87 yards. He was overthrown on a deep pass route that would have been a sure touchdown, but aside from that missed opportunity, the Houston defense did a nice job containing Tampa Bay's biggest offensive weapon.

Week 15 - Joey Galloway had a quiet game and finished with just one reception for seven yards. He was the most targeted Buccaneers receiver, finishing with seven targets for the game, and he was able to force a few defensive pass interference plays downfield that helped keep drives alive for Tampa Bay.

Week 16 - Joey Galloway played just a half, and finished with one reception for 29 yards on just two targets.

Week 18 - Joey Galloway was completely neutralized by the Giants, as he finished with just one reception for nine yards. That catch came in the first quarter, and Galloway was shut out for the remainder of the game. It wasn't for lack of opportunities, however, as the speedster was targeted a team high eight times, including a red zone target that was picked off in the end zone. Galloway was forced to leave late in the game with a shoulder injury.
