Best Case

Favre is an iron man and, unlike last year when he went to New York, he will be immediately comfortable in Minnesota's offensive system. He knows the playbook, and in an ideal scenario he builds a quick rapport with his receivers which allows Favre to throw for 3,400+ yards and 22-24 TDs on his way to a Top 15 fantasy season.

Worst Case

Favre led the league in interceptions last year and admitted to having a torn rotator cuff at his Vikings press conference. While most assume he'll play all 16 games, it can't be discounted that the rotator cuff sidelines him quickly, and all the hype of his return crashes down around the Vikings. In that scenario, not only would Favre be a fantasy bust, but it could have ripple effects throughout the team most notably for WRs like Bernard Berrian, Sidney Rice and Percy Harvin.

Outlook

Brett Favre has finally made a decision that should stick, by putting his John Hancock on a 2-year, $25mm contract in Minnesota. He'll be the starter and has a surprisingly enticing collection of weapons. Berrian is a 1,000-yard receiver with Favre at the helm, Shiancoe was a Top 5 fantasy TE last year, rookie Percy Harvin has big play ability and, of course, Adrian Peterson is going to keep defenses more than honest. Expect Favre to throw for 3,200-3,400 yards and 20-22 TDs if he plays 16 games, but also remember he'll likely be at or near the top of the league in turnovers, too. Favre, at this stage of his career, is a middling fantasy QB2 who probably will be overdrafted by owners hoping for a miracle comeback season.

2008 Game Summaries

Week 1 - Favre made his New York debut in style as he completed 68 percent of his passes for 197 yards and two scores. He hit Jerricho Cotchery in stride for his first touchdown pass of the day early in the first quarter, then proceeded to show some of his creativity as he scrambled out of the pocket and heaved up a prayer which Chansi Stuckey was able to haul in for Favre's' second score of the game.

Week 2 - Favre simply lacked opportunity in this game. His receivers did not seem to get open frequently enough and they also dropped at least three passes. WR Jericho Cotchery was whistled for offensive pass interference on a large gain which was called back. His interception was a poor decision, though, as it was underthrown due to pressure.

He was throwing off of his back foot throughout the game which led to some inaccuracy and dangerous throws. He moved well behind the line of scrimmage to create room and open up plays but he was also called for an illegal forward pass in typical Favre fashion. Favre also missed a wide open RB Thomas Jones in the flat on a poorly underthrown ball which could have led to a decent gain and a first down. At one point, Favre also threw consecutive passes for losses.

Week 3 - Favre found WR Laveranues Coles in the back of the end zone for a three yard touchdown in the second quarter for his touchdown of the game. He had two interceptions in the first half and it seemed that on several plays he and his receivers were not on the same page. He was ten for 16 for 70 yards in the first half but would have a much better half statistically in the second half. The Jets didn't do a very good job of protecting Favre in the first half as the Chargers got good pressure on him and didn't allow time to throw to his receivers deep down the field. Favre was able to pad his stats in the second half as the Jets fell well behind in the game and they had to go to four wide receiver sets the rest of the game. He found WR Chansi Stuckey in the end zone for a third consecutive week early in the fourth quarter for his second touchdown of the game. He would throw for his third touchdown late in the game on a 13 yard pass to TE Dustin Keller. Favre had over 200 yards passing in the second half, but despite the nice statistical numbers he did not look his sharpest and it's clear that Favre and his receivers still need time to gel..

Week 4 - Brett Favre only added to his legend against the Cardinals. He threw three first half touchdowns and was helped by his defense and kicking game as the Jets took a 34-0 lead into halftime. Favre wasn't finished there and he wound up throwing three more scores in the second half to finish with six touchdowns in the game. He connected with Laveranues Coles from 12, 34 and 2 yards out, Jerricho Cotchery from 17 and 40 yards out and TE Dustin Keller from 24 yards out. For the game, he finished 24 of 34 for 289 yards and the aforementioned six touchdowns. The only negative for Favre was one interception, but I'm sure Jet fans and fantasy owners are willing to overlook that one miscue with the game he posted.

Week 6 - Favre had a very efficient day as he completed all but eight passes for 189 yards and a score. Although quiet, Favre did a great job of moving the chains and keeping the offense on the field. His one touchdown pass came early in the game as a play fake brought the defense in, allowing Favre to hit Thomas Jones in the flat for the score. Favre had his mind on the end zone twice more in the contest; however both passes were off the mark and resulted in two Bengal interceptions.

Week 7 - Favre had his worst statistical day of the season as a Jet, failing to throw a touchdown pass while only being able to accumulate 197 yards passing. He was forced to scramble more than usual due to the pressure applied by the Raiders defensive front, and on queue, threw two interceptions. The second interception was a clear miscommunication between Favre and Cotchery while his first pick of the game came in the red zone and halted a New York Jets scoring drive.

Week 8 - Brett Favre proved the gunslinger still lives. The first touchdown was an audible by Favre to the middle screen to RB Leon Washington. His three interceptions were on throws where he put it up hoping his WRs could come down with the ball. On one short pass he threw it right into the hands of LB Derrick Johnson. Johnson dropped it or it would have been run back for six. Favre didn't give up even with those bad throws and ended the game with his third TD and 40th career fourth quarter comeback. He proved that he just won't give up.

Week 9 - Brett Favre took the role of game manager against Buffalo as he made efficient throws and moved the chains. He completed 19 passes for 201 yards, hitting five different receivers in the process. Favre took some shots downfield throughout the game having one pass result in an interception which was returned for a touchdown by Jabari Greer.

Week 10 - You would expect a stronger line for the starting QB when you see 47 points on the board. To be fair, Favre really didn't play all that well. He had some early misses and two near interceptions that should have been caught by St Louis defenders. On a positive note, Favre and Dustin Keller continued to develop their rapport. They were able to hook up on a couple of deep routes as well as a short touchdown pitch and catch. Favre really showed excellent patience as he had to wait for the route to develop.

Week 11 - Favre started the game five for five with a touch down to Leon Washington and was highly impressive with his typical strong arm and great zip on the ball. The offense featured many plays with one or three step drops. The Jets also showed a fair amount of empty sets with four or five wide. Favre did a super job of looking off linebackers and he also used pump fakes to manipulate the Patriots defenders and help his intended receivers get open. Favre struggled some during the middle of game when the defense dialed up more pressure and made him throw out of sync. Overall, he avoided giving up turnovers and helped manage the game beautifully. The drive in over time was impressive in the fact that the Jets sideline looked dejected after the Patriots tied the game with one second left in the game. Favre was on point in the final drive and used Keller to help keep the chains moving.

Week 12 - Favre did a good job of moving the chains and limiting the high risk throws. He was again a game manager completing all but seven of his passes for 224 yards and two touchdowns. He spread his 25 completions among eight different targets, completing no pass over 25 yards but assuring the Jets offense stayed on the field, successfully grinding out yardage and the clock. His interception came on what will be a highlight reel play as Cortland Finnegan made a spectacular bid for the ball, and coming up with his league leading fifth interception of the season. Both touchdown passes were of the shot variety as Favre connected from two and ten yards out respectively, helping New York pull off the upset.

Week 13 - Favre had a game he'd probably like to put behind him, throwing no touchdowns and an interception. The interception came in the second quarter on a deep ball attempt to Laveranues Coles. Coles didn't have position, and Favre overthrew the ball. He often struggled to find open men, and could not convert on either of his two red zone opportunities. He also seemed to struggle with gripping the slick ball, often throwing a wobbly ball and struggling with his accuracy.

Week 14 - Favre could not get a rhythm going offensively, and did not attempt many deep passes. The deep passes he attempted were all incomplete, with one of them intercepted. Favre relied more on his short passing game, and did not utilize his starting wide receivers much. Jerricho Cotchery and Laveranues Coles were targeted once apiece in the first half and ended the game with one catch apiece. Favre and Chansi Stuckey were in sync during the first half as Stuckey was the recipient of four targets, all of them shorter passes that he managed to turn into additional gains with good running after the catch. Most of Favre's passes were short passes, and he never seemed to get comfortable during the game. Due to New York not having the ball much, he was under an aggressive pass rush as San Francisco realized he had to abandon the running game and rely exclusively on the pass, which contributed to his less than stellar numbers.

Week 15 - Favre disappointed fantasy owners again, throwing for 207 yards, one touchdown, and two interceptions in what proved to be a pretty mediocre day. Favre's first interception came on a pass he threw to Laveranues Coles, he threw it behind Coles and as the ball was falling to the ground it bounced off a defenders' helmet, allowing it to be picked off. Later in the game though, Favre was more at fault when he badly under threw Jericho Cotchery on a deep ball. Favre did however, get a chance to show off his wheels in the first quarter as he took a snap and ran down the left sideline for a 27 yard gain.

Week 16 - Favre started out the game eight of nine, but completed just ten of his next 22 passes, including two interceptions and zero points on the board. Favre finished with a passer rating of just 48.7 in this game by virtue of completing 58 percent of his passes for an average gain of just 6.0 yards per attempt. Favre was misfiring frequently in the snow, but also saw his receivers drop passes, including a long pass dropped by Laverneus Coles that could have tied up the game. Favre did however hold onto the ball too long, taking too many sacks and made a few ill-advised throws in this game.

Week 17 - Favre put up another poor outing completing an even fifty percent of his passes and throwing three interceptions. Throwing for 233 yards against a physical Miami defense, Favre started out well hitting Laveranues Coles for a 13 yard touchdown in the second quarter. The adjustments caught up to him as he followed that up with an interception which was batted and caught by Phillip Merling and returned for a 25 yard touchdown. This was a clear momentum shift in the game and gave Dolphins a visible confidence.
