Outlook
When Ray Lewis missed time with an injury last year, it was Ellerbe who seemed to emerge from the shadows. The former part-time player parlayed his opportunity into a team-leading 9 tackles in the Super Bowl win over the 49ers and a $35 million free agent deal with the Dolphins. He takes over for Karlos Dansby inside, but it’s not immediately clear whether he’ll provide a significant upgrade. The Dolphins do get younger and cheaper, although not by much. In any event, Ellerbe has the range to chase down plays from sideline to sideline and typically holds up well in coverage. He should be a full-time MLB on a defense that may have some difficulty running and stopping the run, which typically means added time on the field and more tackle opportunities. Don’t expect the 100 solo tackles that Dansby put up last year, but he should make a solid LB2 based on the situational opportunity facing him.
