[Mon Nov 2, 8:59 AM] Delhomme was knocked out of the game vs. Arizona with a chest contusion - he went to a nearby hospital for the injury to be evaluated, but it was determined to be nothing more than a serious bruise. He'll be evaluated further as the weeek goes along.
Week 9 Matchup Info
at New Orleans Saints (Bad matchup) - Well, at least Carolina's Steve Smith finally caught a TD pass, eight weeks into the season (3/56/1 last week out of seven targets). The next-best receiver on the squad last week was the unexciting Dwayne Jarrett (2 for 2/22/0). All told, Delhomme and Moore (who didn't complete a pass) posted 7/15 for 85 net yards, one TD and zero interceptions. Hey, at least Delhomme didn't rack up multiple interceptions as he had during the past two games and four of the first seven games played this year. Sandwiched around the 325-yards-passing, zero-TDs and three-interceptions game vs. Buffalo two weeks ago, Delhomme has thrown for 65 yards passing and 90 yards passing. He's also dealing with a badly bruised chest that sent him to the hospital for observation/tests during the game last week. Let's just say, the future doesn't look very promising for Carolina receivers right now.The Saints racked up three more interceptions last week (they lead the NFL with 16 interceptions through 7 games). New Orleans added three more sacks to the team total as well - the Saints are tied for 11th in the NFL with 17 sacks to date. While they are 17th in the NFL allowing an average of 223.9 net passing yards per game, that is more a function of teams being in chase mode most of the time behind their powerful offense - the secondary has allowed a mere six passing TDs in the past seven games. This is not a shut-down type of pass D, but they are very good.
The Panthers' passing attack is the polar opposite of the Saints' pass defense - advantage, New Orleans (who also will have the deafening New Orleans 12th man at their backs this week).
Game Summaries
Week 1 vs PHI - Delhomme picked up right where he finished the 2008 postseason, which is not a good thing for Carolina. Delhomme completed 11 throws, but four of them went to Philadelphia. The Eagles had constant pressure on Delhomme but several of his attempts were 50-50 balls at best, including his fourth and final interception that was intended for Steve Smith deep. CB Asante Samuel leaped up for it and snared the final ball from Delhomme. The best news for Delhomme was that his backups did not fare any better, so odds are that Delhomme will be back under center for better or worse next week.Week 2 at ATL - Delhomme came off the ropes swinging and played more than well enough to save his long-term job with the Panthers. We are very impressed with his mental toughness considering the back-to-back implosions he had in his previous two games. Delhomme was throwing the ball into small windows and threading the needle between multiple defenders with impunity. He did not become afraid of making mistakes even though he was under the gun after his putrid performance to open the season. He had great touch on his downfield passes to Steve Smith, and Delhomme bombarded Smith with targets, as he has for most of his career with Carolina. His accuracy was pinpoint at first, but he did have some erratic moments as the game went on. A flea flicker was attempted, but the pressure was too much for Delhomme to even get a pass off. The quality of the Panthers running game set up success in play-action repeatedly for Delhomme. Delhomme's interception came when he forced a throw to Steve Smith on 4th and 10, so we can't really hold it against him too strongly. He has definitely righted the ship.
Week 3 at DAL - Delhomme started out confident, executing well on quick passes and only failing when he faced a lot of pressureon third down. As the game went on, he had a rough go of it on two deep balls to Muhsin Muhammad, one that was underthrown and intercepted, and one that was caught and taken to the house, but Muhammad was called for offensive pass interference because he put a hand in Michael Jenkins back. He did look his best in the two minute drill that resulted in the Panthers only score at the end of the first half. He went to Dante Rosario on back to back seam routes that covered about half of the field, the second of which resulted in a score. Delhomme only took a deep shot to Steve Smith late, and he was also victimized for a pick six on a pass intended for Smith when Smith seemed to change the route from the quick slant Delhomme was expecting. The Panthers comeback chances ended when Delhomme lost the ball under pressure in the game's last minutes.
Week 5 vs WAS - Jake Delhomme played well enough in the win against Washington that his job looks safe for now. In a word, Delhomme was efficient and showed much more poise then he had in recent weeks. Outside of an interception to Deangelo Hall that set up Clinton Portis's first rushing touchdown of the season, Delhomme made good decisions and regularly got the ball out of quick enough to avoid the Redskins' pressure. Delhomme also stepped up in the pocket confidently and managed to turn sure-sacks in to short gains on a handful of occasions, including on a crucial 3rd and 8 play in the 4th quarter where he escaped the grasp of Deangelo Hall and picked up a first down.
Week 6 at TB - Delhomme once again struggled. He was able to move the chains early on, getting the ball to Muhsin Muhammad on a few shorter patterns, but each time he attempted to get the ball to Steve Smith, it blew up in his face: He overthrew Smith on a deep pass; threw to him a second too late into zone coverage - too late to hit him while he was open; and had a pass tipped (which became an interception) while forcing it to him over the middle. Delhomme was accurate and decisive getting the ball to his receivers on short routes, as was evidenced on his 1 yard TD strike to Jeff King. He found Dante Rosario a couple of times for what would have been decent gains, but Rosario couldn't make the catch. The running game was clicking, but Delhomme looked increasingly frustrated as the game went on that he couldn't get anything going in the air.
Week 7 vs BUF - The Bills got good pressure on Delhomme early, and then later in the game, but most of Delhomme's problems were his own making. The Panthers game plan had him throwing lots of short passes early, and he also used his tight ends and running backs as effective checkdowns, but as the game went on, the Bills started anticipating the short passes, especially to Steve Smith. Delhomme threw all three of his interception on long downfield passes that he overthrew, sometimes to wide open receivers, but he also converted perfectly thrown deep balls to Gary Barnidge and Steve Smith. He also threw a lazy out that should have been intercepted. Delhomme doesn't bear all the blame for the Panthers loss. He played well enough for the Panthers to have the lead going into the half, but John Kasay missed two field goals, and a fumbled punt allowed the Bills open up a two-score lead after Delhomme had driven them to a TD to pull the Panthers within eight points.
Week 8 at ARI - Delhomme finally looked good out there. For a while, at least. With the running game dominating the first half, all he had to be was efficient and he was. A perfect pass to Steve Smith for a touchdown was the highlight of his day, and playing with the lead, he wasn't asked to do much more. Delhomme suffered a chest injury of some sort in the third quarter. He appeared to be in considerable pain and took a series off before returning. Upon his return, his throwing accuracy was poor. It was difficult to tell if it was because of the injury or if he was reverting to the overall inconsistent play he has shown thus far this season. He was taken out of the game for good with ten minutes remaining.
