Best Case
Jake Delhomme appears to be making a full recovery from Tommy John surgery on his throwing-arm elbow - with a restocked WR stable that includes Steve Smith, Muhsin Muhammad and D.J. Hackett, the tools are in place for Delhomme to bounce back into top-5 fantasy QB status. With the young duo of Jonathan Stewart and DeAngelo Williams providing a strong rushing attack, Delhomme should find passing lanes to exploit and hit Smith/Muhammad/Hackett for 30+ touchdowns en route to an outstanding season.
Worst Case
Delhomme could struggle to get back into rhythm after so much time away from the game (and a long, complicated rehab on his torn elbow tendons). If he's not fully recovered from the surgery, his passes could lack "pop", leading to a limited range and more interceptions than usual. If Hackett can't shake the injury bug and Muhammad has lost a step, teams will blanket Steve Smith again this year, leaving Delhomme nowhere to go with the ball. Ultimately, Delhomme could give way to Matt Moore if the Panthers' season becomes a lost cause.
Outlook
Assuming that Delhomme's recovery is really going as well as the Panthers claim, it would be no huge surprise to see him back at 2004-05 levels, with high-20's in passing TDs and 3400+ passing yards. The Panthers' offense appears well-stocked and reloaded for the coming campaign, which could result in a solid fantasy season for Delhomme. We'll have to see how well his throwing arm is working once the helmets and pads go on later this summer.
2007 Game Summaries
Week 1 - Delhomme had a solid game throwing for three touchdowns. He completed 18 of 27 passes for 201 yards which included a 68 yard strike to Steve Smith down the left sideline. Delhomme was not sacked and he did not throw any interceptions. He completed his first seven passes of the game and capped the opening drive with a ten yard touchdown pass to Drew Carter. He later hit Carter again on a nine yard touchdown pass in the fourth quarter to seal the game.
Week 2 - Delhomme started off the game looking great. He connected twice with Steve Smith for touchdowns on Carolina's first two drives. With Houston taking over the game after that it forced Delhomme to throw 41 times. He completed 27 passes for 307 yards with three touchdowns. He also threw one interception. 164 of Delhomme's yards came when the game was out of reach.
Week 3 - Delhomme made a lot happen with a few throws connecting on ten of 18 passes for 109 yards and two touchdowns. His first touchdown was a beautifully thrown ball over the shoulder of Foster right near the pylon. Later he connected with Jeff King at the goal line and King was able to stretch the ball over the line for the touchdown. Late in the third quarter, Delhomme threw an incomplete pass to the right and immediately held the elbow on his throwing arm. He was not hit on the play and did not return to the game.
Week 4 - Delhomme did not play due to his injured elbow.
