Best Case

Todd Collins hadn't thrown a significant NFL pass in 10 years before a late season injury to Jason Campbell forced Collins into the starting lineup. No one could've predicted what came next. Collins completed 63.8% of his passes, throwing for 888 yards in four games, with five TDs and zero interceptions. The Redskins won their final four games to finish 9-7 and make the playoffs as a wild card team. Collins was rewarded this offseason with a new contract and stands ready to step in for Campbell if need be.

Worst Case

Collins may have been a journeyman, but he was a logical backup given his years of experience playing for Al Saunders in the Air Coryell offense. At 36 years old, Collins has to adjust to the intricacies of the West Coast Offense, and that's no small feat. Worst case, Collins has to step into the lineup and looks more like 55% passer he was in Buffalo a decade ago than the heroic team leader we saw a season ago.

Outlook

The team is going to give Jason Campbell a long leash so Collins won't see the field this year barring injury. That said the Redskins probably consider themselves a playoff contender, and if Campbell turns the ball over too much, the new coaching staff might put Collins in to steady the ship for a game or two. Collins is waiver wire fodder in redraft leagues.

2007 Game Summaries

Week 14 - Collins came in briefly for a couple of plays when Campbell hurt his throwing on play in the second quarter. He returned to the game permanently when it appeared QB Jason Campbell suffered a serious leg injury. Collins was able to hit TE Todd Yoder for a 21 yard touchdown pass with 17 seconds left in the first half. It was his first touchdown pass since 2002. He finished the first half four for five for 37 yards. Collins played very well in the second half as was able to find open receivers in key situations and move the offense down the field. He hooked up with RB Ladell Betts late in the game on a 16 yard score for his second touchdown pass of the game. He was 11 for 15 for 187 yards in the second half.

Week 15 - Collins did not have a good start to the game, but made a couple of crucial throws for huge gains to lead to points on the scoreboard. He only had eight completions on 25 attempts, but he still threw for 166 yards showing that the completions he did make were for big gains.

Week 16 - Collins was very efficient on the night. He played a poised and consistent game making several very good throws. He ended up going 22 for 29 with two touchdown passes and no interceptions.

Week 17 - Collins had another solid game, throwing for over 200 yards with a touchdown and no interceptions. His favorite targets were his starting wide receivers. He threw 11 balls to Santana Moss and six to Randle El. Collins hit Moss on a deep 42 yard scoring strike in the fourth quarter than sealed the victory. He lost a first half fumble and was sacked three times.

Week 18 - Todd Collins went 29 of 50 for 266 passes, while throwing two touchdowns and two interceptions. The numbers don't look bad, but considering the Seattle pass rush was in his face all day, combined with how his receivers were dropping passes all over the field means he probably deserved a better result. Collins was composed in the pocket, but did not have a lot of time to work for much of the game. In the fourth quarter he came alive; first finding Antwaan Randle El over the middle for a seven yard score, then a drive later hitting Santana Moss down the field for a 30 yard touchdown. Two late interceptions for touchdowns sealed Collins fate. He ran twice for two yards.
