2011 Game Summaries
Week 1 - There were only two-and-a-half weeks for Kerry Collins to learn the Colts offense and it showed. The Texans pass rush created heavy pressure especially in the first half, and most of those plays resulted in turnovers or incompletions. Early in the game Collins pulled down the ball rather than release it to an open receiver, resulting in a sack and fumble and the first Texan touchdown. The very next play Collins fumbled the snap and appeared to have dislocated his index finger, but returned to the game on the next series. The second half was better for the Colts passing game and Collins showed flashes of effectiveness as the offensive line gave him better protection, but already trailing 34-0 most of the second half was garbage time. Collins nearly had a second touchdown pass but receiver Austin Collie's heel came down out of bounds. Collins showed he can still make the throws, but it may be several weeks before he develops timing with his receivers.
Week 2 - Collins looked sub par again in this outing and one of the biggest holes of his game was the inability to score touchdowns, having to settle for 4 field goals and totally bogging down drives towards the redzone. Scoring field goals instead of touchdowns really hurt his productivity for fantasy owners as his only touchdown game in garbage time. Collins still looks and plays like he is very limited to what he can call in this offense. He is not attacking down the field with Clark and Collie the same way Manning used to and his audibles are infrequent. Collins was unlucky to get intercepted as his WR Wayne fell over on the play and led to an easy INT for the Browns DB. His fumble late in the game killed off the Colts chances as he got hit in the pocket. Collins looked comfortable at times running the no huddle offense but the drives always stalled far from the goal line. Collins was thinking too much in pocket which led to a slow, unsure decision making process and a general confused attempt at passing the football. He could have been easily intercepted off a tipped pass but was at least lucky in this regard. Until Collins can master the offense and learn every audible, he will not be effective running this offense and it will always appear hamstrung. Collins got some garbage time numbers to post an average stat line but the game was out of hand halfway through the fourth quarter.
Week 3 - Collins was simply dreadful in the game before leaving in the 3rd quarter with a concussion. Viewers of this game wouldn't have been surprised if he had just been pulled due to ineffectiveness as opposed to injury. Not getting to even 100 yards with nearly 30 attempts is incredibly inefficient. Collins was off on his timing and his accuracy. He was harassed by the Pittsburgh pass rushers, but not so consistently that his performance can be attributed just to that. This team may need to reconsider their $4M contingency plan. In the preseason, even Reggie Wayne expressed concern over the use of Collins while Curtis Painter knew the offense. A symbol of the issues came on a play where Wayne ran a beautiful out route. The NBC crew described it perfectly, showing how Wayne's hips sat down during his cut, and even as he snapped his around, the ball was still in Collins' hand. That's way too late to release it. Even when he finally did, the throw sailed 10 feet over Wayne's head.
