Game Summaries

Week 1 at PIT - Collins might be one of the oldest starting QBs in the league, but he stood tall and moved the offense against arguably the best defense in the league. Collins made one mistake, underthrowing a deep ball that resulted in a Troy Polamalu interception, when rookie Kenny Britt had a step on Polamalu. Collins was able to elude pressure more than once and find a safety valve. Ten to fifteen yard outs were open all night, and Collins was connecting with his receivers on them at will. Collins read the field and made the right decision like a veteran should. The big gain of the night was a long catch and run to Britt when Ryan Clark lost track of the big wideout. Collins was also victimized by a Justin Gage drop in the end zone, or he could have had a bigger night. He's still only a backup fantasy QB, but he's safer in that role than some of his peers who present more upside.

Week 2 vs HOU - Kerry Collins had yet another efficient game against the Houston Texans on Sunday. He finished the day completing 21 of 33 passes for 216 yards, two touchdowns, and one interception. His numbers were slightly skewed by a screen pass that led to a 69 yard touchdown for Chris Johnson. At the same time, he was not asked to throw the ball downfield much at all. Aside from Johnson's screen pass, Collins didn't have a single completion over 16 yards. Collins spread the ball around to 8 different players but only three wide receivers registered a catch. It would appear that Collins' role for the Titans is going to be to protect the ball in a conservative passing game. Unfortunately, Collins' solid performance was tainted when he fumbled the ball with less then two minutes to play as it slipped from his grasp on a short rush, thus cementing the Texans victory. Collins having two turnovers was very uncharacteristic. Kerry Collins had a great deal of success against the Texans (ass he had against the Steelers) finding wide open receivers all over the short-field. He completed passes to the sidelines, across the middle, and on swing routes with ease. At some juncture, Tennessee is going to have to ask Collins to throw the ball a little further downfield, at which point his production might increase a bit. It's important to note that despite the low yardage total, 33 pass attempts is quite a bit more then Titans fans are used to seeing from Kerry Collins.

Week 3 at NYJ - Collins didn't play nearly as badly as his stat line would indicate. He suffered at least five drops by the wide receivers, and also threw a lot of balls away to avoid sacks. As usual, Collins had a good rhythm in the offense when everything was smooth, delivered the ball on time and on target, and he wasn't afraid to throw into small windows. The Jets were successful at getting him off his game, especially late, but they did that to Tom Brady and Matt Schaub, too. All in all, Collins did a fine job of helping the team get righted after falling behind 14-0. His interceptions came when he tried to force the ball to Chris Johnson down the sidelines and when David Harris dropped into coverage on Alge Crumpler and Collins didn't read him. Collins made a very nice quick throw to Nate Washington for the TD when he noticed Dwight Lowery wasn't watching the ball.

Week 4 at JAX - Collins was not on top of his game, but this loss isn't on him. His interceptions were the result of a bad throw and bad decision on his part, but they came when the game was already getting out of hand. Collins wasn't under an immense amount of pressure, and he did move the offense well in the second half. He wasn't the centerpiece of the gameplan when the Titans started with three three-and-outs. Collins ran about as fast as you'll ever see him motor on his 10-yard TD run on fourth down. He threw the ball with good zip on his short and intermediate routes, and seemed to find a new favorite target in Kenny Britt. Jeff Fisher is right to not give in to calls to replace him.

Week 5 vs IND - Collins was largely ineffective at moving the Titans offense down the field on Sunday night. For the most part Collins simply managed the game vs. the Colts, taking what was given to him by a banged up Colts squad that was missing three starters in its secondary. However, even with the Colts secondary playing at less than 100%, Collins rarely pushed the issue down field to test them. He preferred short routes underneath as 13 of his 19 completions went to his TE's or RB's. His longest completion of the night went to Nate Washington for 23 yards and he threw an interception when Colts CB Tim Jennings wrestled a pass away from Nate Washington on the first drive of the second half. It is worth noting that the Titans continue to have a serious case of the dropsies. For the third straight game the Titans brought drives to a halt with drops. Moving forward there is sure to be people calling for the benching of Kerry Collins now that the team is 0-5, however another QB would not make a difference with this team right now. They are just not playing well.

Week 6 at NE - Collins was worse then awful on Sunday against the Patriots. He completed a swing pass to full back Ahrmad Hall for a 15 yard gain in the first quarter. He then completed another pass for a net of minus-22 yards to Nate Washington. And that was it, seriously. 2 completions for negative 7 yards in a "must-win" game. Believe it or not, there was worse news: Collins fumbled a snap and threw two interceptions as well, thus giving his Patriots counterpart Tom Brady the opportunity to throw an NFL record 5 touchdown passes in one quarter. I'm not sure of the last time that a quarterback played 3 full quarters and completed as many passes to his opponent as he did to his own receivers. While Collins has been prone to mistakes in his career and the Foxboro weather was a near white-out of snow, he had been remarkably consistent in his tenure with the Titans. Sunday was a different story entirely. The combination of the cold and a relentless Patriots pass rush from the edges sent Collins reeling. His deep passes where nowhere near target and his short passes lacked the touch necessary to be caught. This performance -- combined with the Titans 0-6 start -- could easily be the end of Kerry Collins' tenure as a starter in the NFL.
