Best Case
Despite not really being an every-down player, Trent Cole is often among the top NFL defensive players in sacks. The Eagles were a top 10 defense in terms of sacks last year (37 as a team) with Coles leading the way with a dozen of his own. If Philadelphia reverts back to an attacking scheme on defense (as expected with improvements in their secondary and also at LB), Cole could be turned loose at the QBs again this year and register double-digit sack numbers in 2008.
Worst Case
Cole is not used on every play, which could minimize some of his production. The Eagles are stronger this year at DE, which may lead to more of a player rotation. Additions like Chris Clemons and improved play by Victor Abiamiri may take snaps away from Cole. Should the Eagles struggle to present much pass rush on the opposing side or up the middle, teams also may roll the pocket away from Philadelphia's 2007 sack leader and reduce his stat lines.
Outlook
The outlook is good for Trent Cole in 2008. Philadelphia addressed many concerns with their defensive personnel in the offseason. Improvements at the other defensive end, the linebackers, and adding a prize CB in Asante Samuel will likely all add up to bigger tackle and sack numbers for Cole. He should finish the season with 10+ sacks with relative ease and prove to be a valuable IDP player this year.
