Week 9 Matchup Info

vs San Diego Chargers (Tough matchup) - We discussed in the rushing matchups how the recent three-game slide of the Giants isn't the running backs' fault - the blame rests squarely in this phase of the game. Eli Manning has thrown six interceptions and just three TDs in his last three outings, with a 51.4 completion percentage as his high-water mark during that time span (45.2 being the low, vs. New Orleans three weeks ago). Against legitimate NFL contenders (as opposed to Oakland, Kansas City, Tampa Bay and Washington, four of the Giants' first five wins) Manning has not answered the starting bell. Steve Smith continues to lead the team in targets, with 28 for 16/181/0 receiving, while Hakeem Nicks has seen 20 balls during the slump (13/247/2). Mario Manningham missed the game last week due to a separated shoulder, and may not be able to play in this contest. Kevin Boss has converted 15 targets into 7/123/1 over the last three weeks. As you can see, none of Manning's targets is thriving right now, mostly due to the lack of TD passes being thrown.

The Chargers' pass D is pretty good, averaging 178.4 net yards allowed per week (sixth in the NFL), with nine passing TDs allowed vs. eight interceptions generated. The Chargers are tied for 11th in the NFL with 17 sacks to date (but the Giants rank fifth in the NFL with only 10 sacks allowed so far this year). Easy matchups against the Raiders and the Chiefs in the last two weeks have artificially skewed their total passing yards allowed over the past four weeks downwards (only 390 allowed in their last three games) - JaMarcus Russell mustered a mere 14/22 for 81 net yards, zero TDs and one interception passing vs. San Diego last week.

Manning is struggling - the Chargers have made struggling QBs look pretty bad of late. Advantage, San Diego.

Game Summaries

Week 3 at TB - Carr got in for mop-up duty, but he only handed off and threw short passes.

Week 5 vs OAK - Carr got over a half of work, and demonstrated some of the reasons he was a #1 overall pick for the Texans. He ran well when he was flushed from the pocket, including a touchdown run in the red zone that started with him eluding Gerard Warren. He threw short and intermediate passes with good velocity and accuracy, including a back shoulder throw that Mario Manningham dropped. He threw into tight windows. Carr even tossed a gorgeous deep ball to Hakeem Nicks that barely drew him out of bounds. On the other hand, Carr also seemed antsy in the pocket, even when there was no pressure, and he seemed too eager to pull the down the ball and run when his initial reads were not open. He looked like one of the better backups in the league, but one with the same old limitations that we're used to seeing.

Week 6 at NO - Carr got in for garbage time for the second consecutive week, but this time, it was the Giants who were in a deep hole. He hooked up with Hakeem Nicks for long TD, and took a hit to do it. If Manning's foot injury gets worse, Carr could be a solid waiver wire pickup.
