Week 9 Injury Status and Other News
He was not listed on Friday's official injury report. [Thu Nov 5, 7:05 PM] Marc Bulger The Associated Press reports Rams head coach Steve Spagnuolo is not expected to replace Marc Bulger as the starting quarterback. "I think Marc has done everything we needed him to do," Spagnuolo said. "I've said this before; it's not one position on the side of the ball, it's everybody."Opinion (from The Upgrade/Downgrade/Waiver Report): Bulger was only slightly better than his opposing QB Matt Stafford in this game. He completed less than 50 percent of his passes, and made lousy throws throughout the game. The Lions applied pressure at times, but in general, Bulger just had an OK game. His receivers didn't help with a couple key drops early the game as well. Ten of his 17 completions were to his TE, RB, or FB on check-downs or short dumps over the middle. His best pass may have been to third-string TE Billy Bajema on an inside out corner mid0way through the fourth quarter. Aside from that? Nothing. If you had to describe Bulger's performance in one word: YAWN.

Game Summaries
Week 1 at SEA - Bulger never really had a chance in this game. Either he was under pressure from a blitz or free pass rusher, or he couldn't find anyone open. Bulger was moving around on some designed rollouts, and he wasn't afraid to throw into tight coverage, but nothing really worked for the Rams pass offense. The offensive line actually gave him time to throw on a good amount of snaps. Bulger didn't make any terrible mistakes, and he was willing to test the defense deep, but to no avail. Some competitiveness bubbled to the surface when Bulger took a hit on a scramble and popped up looking to jaw with a Seahawks defender. The Rams offense was also hampered by numerous penalties, some caused by the loud Seattle crowd, some just Richie Incognito doing his normal thing. Bulger is still just a desperation option at QB.Week 2 at WAS - By the time you finish reading this sentence, you will have had about 10 times as much time as Bulger had on nearly every snap in Week 2. The Rams' offensive line was downright offensive, as they bought nothing for Bulger under center all day. It looked like a game of "Jailbreak" every time Bulger looked to throw the ball, which was the main reason he had a terrible day as a passer and his top target (Donnie Avery) had a day to forget.
Week 3 vs GB - Marc Bulger didn't stick around long enough to warrant any really bad criticism. But despite his 3-for-4 line, he looked pretty lost out there for the short time that he played. And he did manage to fumble the ball on the play in which he was injured.
Week 4 at SF - Bulger was held out of the Week 4 game against San Francisco due to a shoulder injury. He was able to throw some in practice earlier in the week so he may be available in Week 5 against Minnesota.
Week 5 vs MIN - Much was made of Bulger's game time prep and that he was available to play if needed. After Boller threw the interception in the end zone, Bulger got his chance and came into the game during the garbage time in the fourth quarter. He made the most of it with short passes to keep the ball moving and a couple deeper passes to Donnie Avery. On Avery's TD receptions, the ball was short but Avery was able to make an adjustment and spin his way into the end zone. He'll be the starting QB next week for the Rams, but be warned that his stats were largely inflated due to garbage time play.
Week 6 at JAX - Bulger came out and had a perfect first drive, driving the Rams down the field with ease and capping it with a nice floater to the corner of the end zone that Donnie Avery collected for a TD. The Rams even showed a killer instinct when Bulger went deep to Avery after a nice Danny Amendola kick return, but the ball was underthrown and intercepted by Rashean Mathis. Later in the first half, Avery left with a hip injury, and the passing offense was effectively defanged. Bulger resorted to short throws and could only move the offense in fits and starts in the second half. The game-tying FG was set up by a strong catch and run by Steven Jackson and some short throws to Danny Amendola, and the Rams didn't try to score with seven seconds left even though they still had a timeout. Bulger also almost gave away the game on a throw that should have been a pick late. Just when the offense was showing signs of life, it deflated back its typical flaccid self.
Week 7 vs IND - Bulger is doing all he can with limited options on offense once again for the 2009 version of the Rams. After RB Steven Jackson, the only real threat left is WR Donnie Avery, giving Bulger little to work with to move the ball. His offensive line also does him no favors, forcing him to move around in the pocket most of the time and also to throw on the run. Rarely does he get decent time in the pocket. His Week 7 performance against the Colts was highlighted by a 50-yard flea flick to Donnie Avery, but that was the only completion over 15 yards for the afternoon. Bulger can be an average-to-good quarterback if he has decent targets and time to throw, but that's not the case this season.
Week 8 at DET - Bulger had a somewhat quite game for the Rams, but managed to keep the offense moving and let Steven Jackson take over and bring home the win. Bulger was under pressure for certain parts of the game but in general, Steven Jackson kept the defense honest. Bulger simply just had a bad game. He completed less than 50 percent of his passes, had several key throws dropped and wasn't able to get his receiving corps involved in the game. Only seven of his 17 completions went to WRS. The rest were to RB or TE. He checked down a lot, and frequently had balls batted down at the line of scrimmage. The interception was one of those types of passes that were tipped at the line and the DE came down with the ball for the INT. Bulger ultimately kept things moving though, and the Rams were able to come away with their first win.
