Week 9 Matchup Info

at Atlanta Falcons (Good matchup) - While the Redskins' rushing attack sputtered under Sherm Lewis' leadership last week, he improved the output from Jason Campbell (29/43 for 284 yards, two TDs and one interception thrown). For once, the passing attack was not the problem in Washington. Unfortunately, top-shelf TE Chris Cooley was lost for the season with a badly broken ankle incurred during the game. 'Not the way you want it,' Fred Davis said of becoming the Redskins lead TE in the wake of Chris Cooley's injury. 'But this is an opportunity. That's how this league is. One guy goes out, you got to be able to fill the shoes - or try. In this situation, that's why they drafted me in the second round.' Davis caught eight passes for 78 yards and one touchdown in Week 7 in relief of Cooley - he's in a position to catch a lot of balls in the coming weeks. Santana Moss was second in receptions during the first week of the Lewis era, with 6/74/0, and little-utilized Devin Thomas grabbed the first receiving TD of his career with 3/45/1. We'll see how the offense operates now that they've had a bye week of practices to get used to they new approach.

Atlanta's personnel issues at the cornerback position have led to serious problems in this phase of the game over recent weeks - in the last four games, the Falcons have coughed up 1059 net passing yards and 96 total points. Dallas blasted them for 37 points and 21/29 for 299 net yards, three TDs and zero interceptions two weeks ago, while Drew Brees posted 25/33 for 291 net yards, two TDs and one interception vs. Atlanta on Monday Night Football (a 35-27 loss). This just isn't a solid pass defense, friends, and there isn't much the Falcons can do about it this year with the trading deadline past and only street free agents available.

Campbell showed a spark against the intimidating Philadelphia D last week - he should put up respectable numbers against the sad-sack Falcons despite the hostile stadium that the Redskins will play in this week.
