Outlook

Tom Brady is either the 1st or 2nd best QB in the league, but either way he's an elite fantasy option that you don't have to pay a 1st round pick for (as you probably do with Vick or Rodgers). He may have the deepest stable of weapons in his storied career, and his offensive line is intact and not dealing with any of the contract nonsense that served as a distraction in 2010. Brady will be a Top 5 QB in every format, and could easily finish atop the rankings.

Why he is undervalued

according to one of our writers (based on an ADP > 250 on Aug 17 --- go here for the complete article)

Colin Dowling - I realize that finding value in QB3 is a little difficult. But Tom Brady is being drafted one slot ahead of Peyton Manning (who may start the season on the PUP list) and a couple slots behind Drew Brees. While it's foolish to predict Year X based solely on Year X-1, it would be a mistake to ignore that Brady was QB1 last season (a position he has reached twice in his last three healthy seasons). The Patriots have added Chad Johnson and two new running backs to help Brady and have another year of experience out of Rob Gronkowski and Aaron Hernandez at tight end. I don't know if Brady will finish as QB1 again this year, but I'd be willing to bet the gap between he and Aaron Rogers (ADP 9) won't justify 17 draft spots of difference in hindsight.

Why he is overvalued

according to one of our writers (based on an ADP > 250 on Aug 17 --- go here for the complete article)

Jeff Pasquino - Of all of the second tier quarterbacks, Tom Brady could be the most disappointing. New England invested in two new running backs (Shane Vereen, Stevan Ridley) and they still have two good ones from last year (Danny Woodhead, BenJarvus Green-Ellis). Couple that strength in the running game with a risky WR1 (Chad Ochocinco) who has not proven that he can stretch the field yet nor help draw attention away from Wes Welker and you might be expecting too much for Brady to throw 25-30 touchdowns or more this year.

Patriots | Tom Brady aggravated shoulder in SB XLVI (Thu Feb 9, 09:50 AM) - New England Patriots QB Tom Brady (shoulder) aggravated an earlier left shoulder sprain in the third quarter of Super Bowl XLVI. The aggravation did not lead to further injury, and it's also not believed to be an injury that will require attention during the offseason.

Our View: Brady didn't look quite the same after getting sacked by Justin Tuck in the second half. Backup Brian Hoyer even began warming up, but Brady was able to stay in and finish the game.

Jacobs said he should respect New England Patriots QB Tom Brady's wife. 'Given the fact that it's a colleague of mine's wife, I do apologize for saying that, because I shouldn't have said that,' Jacobs said. 'It's his wife and I should respect that just as much as anyone else.'

Patriots | Rodney Harrison defends Tom Brady (Wed Feb 8, 09:48 AM) - Former New England Patriots SS Rodney Harrison, now an analyst for NBC, doesn't believe the heat QB Tom Brady is taking in New England and elsewhere following Super Bowl XLVI is justified. 'I don't think it's fair,' Harrison said. 'I think it ultimately comes down to 'team.' A lot of times, quarterbacks, as well as coaches, they get too much credit sometimes. But I don't think Tom should take the heat. He had opportunities to make some plays, and he did. Some guys dropped some balls, that's all part of football. They had opportunities. But I think it's just the media's way of saying, 'Finally, we get a chance to say something negative about him. Finally, we get a chance to torch him.''

Patriots | Gisele Bundchen rips wide receivers (Mon Feb 6, 09:14 AM) - The wife of New England Patriots QB Tom Brady, supermodel Gisele Bundchen, was critical of the team's receivers, who dropped passes late in Super Bowl XLVI. While making her way toward the elevator following the game, New York Giants fans were harassing Bundchen, yelling, 'Eli rules, Eli owns your husband.' She replied, 'You (need) to catch the ball when you're supposed to catch the ball. My husband cannot (expletive) throw the ball and catch the ball at the same time. I can't believe they dropped the ball so many times.'

2011 Game Summaries

Week 1 - Shortly after a report appears saying Tom Brady had never even thrown for the 422 yards that Cam Newton threw for this past weekend, low and behold the champion shatters that mark by throwing for 517 yards, a new personal record. That is not a misprint in case you missed the game. Footballguys could fill pages and pages of accolades for Tom Brady but here are some of the highlights from last night. 1st play of the game on offense for the Pats, Miami had just scored on an opening drive lasting 7:30 minutes and what does Brady do? He barks a hard count and draws the Miami defense offsides. That set the tone for the game and was Brady's way of saying that he was going to dictate the game not Miami; that he was in charge of the outcome and not the drive that just happened, just forget about it because I'm Tom Brady and I'm in charge out here. Like a surgeon from the Cleveland Clinic he took the Miami Dolphins secondary apart on an operation table known as the gridiron. Brady hit all of his passes on the first two drives of the game going 8 for 8 and leading New England to a 14-7 lead. When Miami pulled close in the 2nd half Brady started connecting with his wideouts after tearing Miami apart thru the middle with his TEs in the 1st half. We'll go over the 99 yard touchdown when we highlight Welker but everything Brady wanted to do he was able to do. The intensity he brings not just on the field but also the huddle and sidelines is unmatched in the NFL. Brady was able to find Gronkowski early and then Hernandez a lot more in the 2nd half. Brady helped the Patriots rack up over 620 yards of offense, in fact Coach Sparano said after the game the Patriots had 700 yards of offense; he wsn't far off. You know Brady can hit just about every pass play that you can draw up but it's all the other things he brings that separates him form the rest of the league.

Week 2 - After two weeks, Brady is well on his way towards a career year. He picked the Chargers apart with surgical precision, proving that last week's offensive fireworks show was simply the beginning. For the most part, Brady had loads of time to throw all game long. And with that time, he was able to constantly deliver perfect touch to find holes in the defense wherever they existed. In the first half, the Chargers typically rushed just three at a time -- and Brady absolutely had his way with them. He knows exactly what to do at all times when he doesn't have to face a dynamic pass rush, and it was clear the Chargers couldn't stop him using that approach. For the most part, he didn't even really look deep downfield. The vast majority of his damage was done on the underneath stuff, because that's what the Chargers were giving them. His touchdown passes were each better throws than the one that preceded it. The first was a high strike to TE Aaron Hernandez, who did make a great effort to come down with it. He then twice found his other TE, Rob Gronkowski. The first was just a perfect strike over the middle, and the second was stuck in an extremely tight spot that didn't leave much margin for error. About his only semi-negative moment was when he threw a pass that bounced around a bit and was nearly picked off. Every quarterback in the league has about 3-4 of those per game, so it really wasn't a big deal at all and it's a stretch just to call it a negative. Brady did have a very scary moment in the third quarter when he somehow avoided serious injury. He was hit below the knee and his leg began to buckle sideways, which had to cause a collective gasp in New England. But despite the freaky-looking nature of the hit Brady stood up with absolutely zero sign of injury. The league is looking into whether Brady is now a cyborg.

Week 3 - It started out like a typical game for Brady against the Bills, but this one had a twist ending. Facing little pressure up front, Brady carved up the Bills secondary with ease and finished with 387 yards and 4 TD passes. What made this game different, however, were the 4 interceptions he threw. Several of them were tipped, including the most critical play which came in fourth quarter. The pass deflected off the face mask of Marcell Dareus and landed right in the hands of CB Drayton Florence, who returned the ball 27 yards for a defensive touchdown that gave the Bills their first lead of the game. Brady led the Pats down the field for a tying touchdown on a 4th down pass to Wes Welker, but the Bills were able to run out the clock and kick a winning field goal as time expired. Brady was the victim of some unlucky bounces, but generally ran the offense like a well-oiled machine.

Week 4 - Brady led his team to a bounce back win in a hostile environment. Brady had a couple drives stall out because of sacks but other than that the Patriots offense was quite productive as a unit.  The offensive line played really well today and for the most part kept Brady upright. But at the same time the Raiders do have a decent front seven and did pressure Brady on a lot of his incomplete passes.  Brady seems to still have eyes for Wes Welker (40 catches in only 4 games this year), and Welker had almost 50% of the team's total targets (14/30) in this game.   The next highest targeted receiver was TE Rob Gronkowski who had 5 targets and could of had a much bigger day than his one catch performance. Gronkowski got deep several times, and while they could not connect Brady was very close on two of the deep targets in the red zone. But today was a much more balanced attack from the Patriots as they ran the ball 30 times and passed the ball 30 times. Therefore, Brady was not asked to throw for 400+ yards again but not to worry as he still looked sharp and just missed on several other plays. One could tell that New England enjoyed out-rushing the most dangerous rushing attack in the league 183 to 160. Brady also did a great job of moving in the pocket when the pocket would breakdown he would step up and often find the open man.
