Game Summaries
Week 3 vs GB - Boller took over at QB and promptly displayed all the qualities that Bulger was lacking: He was calm under pressure -- which was often -- he challenged the Packers secondary with deeper throws that Bulger seemed willing to attempt, and showed good scrambling ability. On his first series he even did some blocking on a Steven Jackson rush. Boller probably didn't endear himself to his coaches for his fearless play, but it seemed to energize an offense that had scored only a single touchdown on the season. He was confident with his throws, and found TE Daniel Fells in man coverage twice for touchdowns. It's worth noting that Boller had a little more trouble moving the chains after WR Laurent Robinson left the game due to injury. His interception was the result of a gutsy throw, not a bad one. With his team playing from behind, he was taking chances rather than playing it safe.Week 4 at SF - Kyle Boller struggled against a young and impressive San Francisco defense. The 49ers got a lead early and the defense pinned their ears back and came after Boller, pressuring him all day long which led to five sacks and a costly interception that LB Patrick Willis returned for a touchdown. Boller's receivers did little to help him out as the Rams only completed five passes for over 10 yards and just one over twenty. Boller did admirably considering the help he received and defense that he faced, so do not write him completely off for his career -- but avoid starting him next week against the Vikings if you can.
Week 5 vs MIN - Boller moved the offense well for the Rams, but the turnovers deep in Viking Territory ultimately led to his removal. In the first quarter, on the fumble, Boller clearly dropped the ball as he was going back for the throw. Later in the first half, he and Steven Jackson couldn't connect on a goal line handoff and Jackson fumbled away the ball. Later he made a nice pass to Daniel Fells inside the five yard line but Fells was drilled from behind and coughed up the ball again. Boller's final turnover was the interception in the end zone where he forced the ball into coverage even though his WR was out of position. His performance wasn't as bad as his stats might indicate, but ultimately he was replaced by Bulger and will be the #2 QB after this week.
