Best Case
Becht hasn't been a receiving option since 2003 when he was with the Jets. And he now finds himself second on the depth chart behind a receiving tight end in Randy McMichael. That being said, McMichael regressed last year in his first season with the Rams and didn't come close to putting up the numbers most thought he would. There's not much to suggest that Becht will overtake McMichael on the depth chart, but stranger things have certainly happened. McMichael is on a shorter leash after disappointing in 2007, and it's not as if there are a ton of receiving tight ends available for the Rams to pursue.
Worst Case
Things in Saint Louis could go much the same way they went in Tampa. Becht has made a name for himself as one of the league's better blocking tight ends, but his fantasy output has left a lot to be desired the last few years. After putting up 36, 28, and 40 receptions with the Jets from 2001-2003, he has had just 13, 16, 18, and 5 catches in his last four seasons. If the Rams plan to utilize him the way he was used in Tampa (and all signs suggest that he will be), then he will be one of the most irrelevant tight ends in all of fantasy football.
Outlook
In all likelihood, McMichael will keep his job security. It's difficult to justify giving him a large contract just a year ago and then burying him on the bench. Not to mention, the team lost Isaac Bruce to the San Francisco 49ers this past offseason, which could mean McMichael's role in the offense increases. If that's the case, Becht might see close to a repeat performance of his 2007 campaign in which he caught just five balls.
