Best Case

Charlie Batch will compete with Dennis Dixon to be the Steelers third-string QB. He's a savvy veteran who can be solid yet unspectacular if pressed into starting duty. He'll hold a clipboard for the Steelers unless injuries ravage the position in front of him.

Worst Case

It won't be easy for Batch to beat out the younger and more athletic Dennis Dixon. The Steelers are unlikely to carry four quarterbacks this year so Batch may find himself on the cut list if he doesn't perform in training camp. Batch still belongs in the NFL and wouldn't be out of work for long if he's cut. However, we don't think anyone will see him as more than quality veteran depth. Batch could push a young backup quarterback but we think most of this year he'll be wearing a headset, regardless of which team he plays for.

Outlook

Batch is only a backup and won't see the field unless there's devastating injuries in front of him. If forced into duty we still wouldn't feel comfortable starting Batch in fantasy leagues. That scenario wouldn't be a disaster for the Steelers but it also wouldn't produce a ton of fantasy points.

Latest News

Steelers | Two free agents not expected to return (Fri Feb 10, 01:32 PM) - The Pittsburgh Steelers are not expected to re-sign impending free-agent QB Charlie Batch and OT Max Starks this offseason.

Our View: The Steelers should lose both Batch and Dennis Dixon this year in free agency. Byron Leftwich will continue to be the primary backup behind Ben Roethlisberger provided he can stay healthy.
