PK Morten Andersen, Free agent
HT: 6-2, WT: 225, Born: 8-19-1960, College: Michigan State, Drafted: Round 4
2008 Projections
Best Case
Andersen is reliable and consistent from under 40 yards. With the Falcons in 2007 he finished 25 of 28 (89.3%) on field goals and 24 of 24 on extra points. Needless to say, after a lengthy career he has set quite a few NFL records and milestones, including:
• Most Pro Bowl selections for a kicker (7)
• Missed only three games in 25 years due to injury
• Most career field goal attempts (709)
• Most career field goals from beyond 50 yards (40)
• Most field goals of 50+ yards in a year (8 in 1995)
• Longest consecutive games scoring streak (332). The next closest is Jim Breech with 186.
• Most career game-deciding kicks (31)
• First on the all-time scoring list with 2544 points
Worst Case
After 25 years in the NFL, Andersen does not have the range on longer field goals or distance on kickoffs. Some coaches might consider him as old.
Outlook
Andersen will be waiting beside the phone along with quite a few others. The free agent list includes established veterans John Carney, Mike Vanderjagt (CFL), and Dave Rayner. The losers of the kicker competitions in Denver, Kansas City, New Orleans, and Seattle will most likely hit the market. AFL kickers with NFL experience include Paul Edinger, Remy Hamilton, Seth Marler, and Todd France. There are also plenty of younger prospects that have been lurking in recent NFL training camps.
