TE redraft rankings by Jason Wood
submitted 5 days ago
| Rank | Player | Team | Comment |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1 | Jimmy Graham | NO | |
| 2 | Rob Gronkowski | NE | |
| 3 | Aaron Hernandez | NE | show |
[Jun 6th] Jason Wood says: With Rob Gronkowski's status undetermined after back surgery, and Wes Welker leaving for Denver, Hernandez has an opportunity to put up astounding numbers this year. He'll be one of, if not THE, favorite target in New England.

| 4 | Jason Witten | DAL | show |
[Jun 6th] Jason Wood says: Jason Witten's preseason spleen injury dropped his ADP by a few rounds, but those brave enough to draft him were rewarded with a stellar season (110 receptions for 1,039 yards) that belongs in the record books. Witten returns as Tony Romo's most trusted and sure handed target, and is one of the few tight ends likely to finish as the #1 player at his position.

| 5 | Tony Gonzalez | ATL | show |
[Jun 7th] Jason Wood says: Gonzalez was talked out of retirement, which is a boon for fantasy owners everywhere. His advanced age shouldn't worry you from viewing him as the best consolation prize if you miss out on one of the 'Big 4' at the position (Gronkowski, Hernandez, Graham and Witten).

| 6 | Greg Olsen | CAR | |
| 7 | Owen Daniels | HOU | show |
[Jun 7th] Jason Wood says: Daniels gets no respect, but is coming off an 8th place finish among fantasy tight ends. The only fly in the ointment is rookie DeAndre Hopkins, who could finally give QB Matt Schaub a legitimate secondary target beyond Andre Johnson. If Hopkins is as good as I think he is, Daniels won't see as many targets this year, but will still produce low end TE1 numbers.

| 8 | Jared Cook | STL | show |
[Jun 7th] Jason Wood says: I've never been a Jared Cook fan but find myself ranking him higher than any of my colleagues this year. Cook was signed to a massive contract by the Rams, and there's no question he'll be targeted early and often. I'm betting the light switch goes on, and Cook vaults into the upper echelon of the position.

| 9 | Vernon Davis | SF | show |
[Jun 7th] Jason Wood says: One school of thought says Davis will flourish this year without Michael Crabtree and Delanie Walker. I'm less convinced, and worry that Walker's departure will require Davis to stay in as a blocker more.

| 10 | Jermichael Finley | GB | show |
[Jun 7th] Jason Wood says: Finley finished as the 5th best fantasy TE in 2011, but fell to 19th last year mainly due to just two touchdowns. Fantasy owners seem to have fallen out of love with the Packers behemoth, which has me eyeing him as a late round option if I miss the boat on elite guys early in the draft.

| 11 | Antonio Gates | SD | show |
[Jun 7th] Jason Wood says: Gates played 15 games last year but posted the lowest fantasy ranking since his rookie season (12th TE). He's clearly lost a step (a career low 11.0 yards per reception) and should no longer be counted on as an every week fantasy starter.

| 12 | Dennis Pitta | BAL | show |
[Jun 7th] Jason Wood says: Pitta is one of a handful of 2012 surprises that will be overdrafted this season. His 61 for 669 and 7 could easily turn into 50-55 receptions and 4-5 TDs this year, but fantasy owners are too prone to assume last year is a floor versus part of a wide range of outcomes. Pitta isn't a special athlete, and the Ravens have plenty of other options, including a healthier Ed Dickson.
(hide this) | |||
| 13 | Jordan Cameron | CLE | show |
[Jun 7th] Jason Wood says: I'm not alone in wanting to rank Cameron much higher. Head coach Chudzinkski has made his career by coaching tight ends ranging from Kellen Winslow at the University of Miami to Antonio Gates in his prime years in San Diego to Greg Olsen's resurgent season last year in Carolina. If Cameron plays well in the preseason, expect his ranking to skyrocket.

| 14 | Marcedes Lewis | JAX | show |
[Jun 7th] Jason Wood says: Marcedes Lewis isn't a world beater...how can he be with Blaine Gabbert at the helm? Yet, he finished 17th last year and the Jaguars failed to add any other threats to the receiving game. Lewis and WR Cecil Shorts will see plenty of targets, regardless of who is under center.

| 15 | Dwayne Allen | IND | show |
[Jun 7th] Jason Wood says: Dwayne Allen has a productive rookie season (45 receptions for 521 yards and 3 TDs), and history is certainly kind to tight ends with his rookie resume. That said, the Colts are implementing a more traditional West Coast offense this year under OC Pep Hamilton, and head coach Chuck Pagano has already said he expects Coby Fleener to double his reception total in 2013. Allen should be viewed as a late round TE2 and fantasy backup.

| 16 | Martellus Bennett | CHI | show |
[Jun 7th] Jason Wood says: Martellus Bennett parlayed a decent season in New York into a new deal with the Chicago Bears. It's hard for me to get too excited about Bennett's role in a new city with a new quarterback, but he's among the handful of later round TEs to target with reasonably high upside.
(hide this) | |||
| 17 | Brandon Pettigrew | DET | show |
[Jun 7th] Jason Wood says: Pettigrew couldn't muster a top 20 season in spite of the fact Matthew Stafford threw the ball more than 700 times, and after four seasons it's clear he cannot stretch the field or beat defenders deep. Pettigrew is destined to be a move-the-chains tight end and his lack of upside makes him a boring option on draft day.

| 18 | Kyle Rudolph | MIN | show |
[Jun 7th] Jason Wood says: Rudolph was a dynamo last season, and helped me win a lot of leagues. But I find myself avoiding him this year because I don't think the Vikings offense is dynamic enough to to project further growth, and I believe Rudolph's 9 TD receptions is destined for regression back into the 4-6 range.

| 19 | Dustin Keller | MIA | show |
[Jun 7th] Jason Wood says: Dustin Keller was a top 10 fantasy TE in 2010 and 2011, but missed 8 games last year in his final season in New York. He's betting on himself with a team friendly deal in Miami. I'm not sure his confidence will be rewarded.
(hide this) | |||
| 20 | Coby Fleener | IND | show |
[Jun 7th] Jason Wood says: Fleener was outplayed by Dwayne Allen last year in spite of Fleener's obvious rapport with QB Andrew Luck. This year argues for a turnaround thanks to the implementation of a new offense, by his former coach at Stanford (Pep Hamilton).

| 21 | Fred Davis | WAS | show |
[Jun 7th] Jason Wood says: I'm not sold on Davis, and think it's been long enough to stop drafting him on what MIGHT happen and focus on what HAS happened. He flashes but hasn't been able to consistently beat mobile linebackers and physical corners.
(hide this) | |||
| 22 | Heath Miller | PIT | show |
[Jun 7th] Jason Wood says: Heath Miller had a career year in 2012, finishing as the 4th best fantasy tight end -- an impressive feat or a tight end playing in his eighth season. Unfortunately Miller tore his ACL at the end of the year, making his value for this year uncertain, particularly in the first few weeks of the season.
(hide this) | |||
| 23 | Brandon Myers | NYG | show |
[Jun 7th] Jason Wood says: Brandon Myers was a pleasant surprise last year as Carson Palmer's most trusted receiver, but counting on him to do much in New York is foolhardy.
(hide this) | |||
| 24 | Jacob Tamme | DEN | show |
[Jun 7th] Jason Wood says: Jacob Tamme is the player most at risk from the addition of Wes Welker.
(hide this) | |||
| 25 | Zach Miller | SEA | show |
[Jun 7th] Jason Wood says: Miller seemed destined for greatness in Oakland, but has been a forgotten man in Seattle.
(hide this) | |||
| 26 | Jermaine Gresham | CIN | show |
[Jun 7th] Jason Wood says: Gresham has finished 13th and 11th in the last two seasons, but garners little hype from fantasy owners, myself included. Ultimately it's because Gresham isn't a special athlete, and looks uncomfortable once the ball is in his hands. With the addition of Tyler Eifert, we've arguably seen the best Gresham has to offer.
(hide this) | |||
| 27 | Rob Housler | ARI | show |
[Jun 7th] Jason Wood says: Housler is a popular deep sleeper this year, but I don't see cause for excitement. There are a half dozen other late round tight ends I would rather roll the dice on.
(hide this) | |||
| 28 | Brent Celek | PHI | show |
[Jun 7th] Jason Wood says: If fantasy owners draft Brent Celek based on what he did in his prime playing for Andy Reid, it could be a mistake. Chip Kelly targeted James Casey in free agency and drafted Zach Ertz in the second round, he clearly has other plans at the tight end position.
(hide this) | |||
| 29 | Kellen Winslow Jr | NYJ | show |
[Jun 14th] Jason Wood says: The Jets signed Winslow to a 1-year deal. Even though Winslow was essentially out of football last year, we need to remember he's just 29 years old and is arguably the Jets most accomplished receiver at any position. With the likes of Jeff Cumberland and Konrad Reuland on the depth chart, Winslow should be in line to start and play significant snaps. Also keep in mind that OC Marty Mornhinweg is a Winslow fan, and once lobbied for the Eagles to add him.

| 30 | Scott Chandler | BUF | |
| 31 | Luke Stocker | TB | show |
[Jun 7th] Jason Wood says: Dallas Clark caught 47 receptions last year but was not retained, and Luke Stocker appears likely to take over the starting job. That's worth something, but don't overpay for a guy whose upside amounts to a decent bye week fill in as your fantasy TE2.
