QB redraft rankings by Jason Wood
submitted 7 days ago
| Rank | Player | Team | Comment |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1 | Drew Brees | NO | |
| 2 | Aaron Rodgers | GB | |
| 3 | Peyton Manning | DEN | |
| 4 | Cam Newton | CAR | |
| 5 | Tom Brady | NE | |
| 6 | Matthew Stafford | DET | |
| 7 | Matt Ryan | ATL | show |
[Jun 6th] Jason Wood says: The Falcons have morphed into a passing team and Matt Ryan's fantasy value has risen in lockstep. Armed with a cadre of talented receivers at every position, there's no reason Ryan shouldn't deliver fantasy QB1 numbers for years to come.

| 8 | Tony Romo | DAL | show |
[Jun 6th] Jason Wood says: The Cowboys are a soap opera, but Tony Romo delivers elite fantasy statistics every year, and armed with a new $100mm contract there's no reason to think 2013 will be any different.

| 9 | Colin Kaepernick | SF | show |
[Jun 6th] Jason Wood says: Kaepernick will need to mirror last year's running stats to deliver on his Top 10 ranking, as the 49ers are in no rush to transition to a pass heavy attack. The loss of Michael Crabtree threw some cold water on my early preseason enthusiasm for Kaepernick, but I still see him as a low end fantasy QB1.

| 10 | Russell Wilson | SEA | show |
[Jun 6th] Jason Wood says: Russell Wilson was a marvel in his rookie season, and the sky is the limit for his career. Yet last year's 26 TD passes will be tough to match without a marked increase in pass attempts. Since the Seahawks are a legitimate contender thanks to the staunch defense and powerful running game, I'm not sure Wilson will have the passing attempts necessary to finish much higher than QB10.

| 11 | Andrew Luck | IND | |
| 12 | Robert Griffin III | WAS | |
| 13 | Andy Dalton | CIN | show |
[Jun 6th] Jason Wood says: Dalton will never be confused with Tom Brady or Aaron Rodgers, but he's executed OC Jay Gruden's offense effectively. The Bengals continue to surround Dalton with more weapons (Tyler Eifert and Giovanni Bernard this offseason), which makes him one of the more compelling backup fantasy QBs to target on draft day.

| 14 | Eli Manning | NYG | show |
[Jun 6th] Jason Wood says: Manning had a bit of a down season in 2012, as the Giants running backs were hurt as was Hakeem Nicks. Yet, we know Manning can be a top 5 fantasy QB (he's done it before) when the dominoes fall as planned. Manning is one of those not-so-sexy picks you can roster as your QB2 without having to reach into the early rounds.

| 15 | Philip Rivers | SD | show |
[Jun 6th] Jason Wood says: Rivers is one of my picks to surprise this season under new head coach Mike McCoy. I expect Vincent Brown and Keenan Allen to team with Malcom Floyd and Danario Alexander to give Rivers one of the best deep ball receiving corps in the AFC.

| 16 | Alex Smith | KC | show |
[Jun 6th] Jason Wood says: Andy Reid sent Donovan McNabb to five Pro Bowls, turned Michael Vick into an MVP candidate, and made A.J. Feeley and Koy Detmer seem like viable NFL starters. Anyone that thinks Reid can't work wonders with Alex Smith isn't a student of NFL history. Smith is accurate, in his prime, and has the athleticism and pocket awareness to flourish in Reid's West Coast offense.

| 17 | Matt Schaub | HOU | show |
[Jun 6th] Jason Wood says: Schaub faded toward the end of last year, but the addition of rookie WR DeAndre Hopkins should provide more stability for an offense that's been forced to rely on Andre Johnson too much. While Schaub isn't one of my favorite sleeper picks, I would feel very comfortable drafting him as part of a mid-round quarterback-by-committee.

| 18 | Joe Flacco | BAL | |
| 19 | Sam Bradford | STL | |
| 20 | Jay Cutler | CHI | show |
[Jun 6th] Jason Wood says: A lot of people think new head coach Marc Trestman will find a way to ignite the Bears offense. I'm not so sure, particularly since we've seen Jay Cutler play for a number of different play-callers. Cutler is a good, not great, option as your QB2.

| 21 | Carson Palmer | ARI | show |
[Jun 6th] Jason Wood says: Palmer is a popular sleeper pick this year but I'm not convinced. He's been a middling producer for quite a few seasons now, is joining a team with a terrible offensive line, and is past his prime. It's possible everything will click for Palmer under Bruce Arians' watch, but I'll let someone else overpay for the privilege of testing that hypothesis.

| 22 | Ben Roethlisberger | PIT | show |
[Jun 6th] Jason Wood says: Roethlisberger is a beaten man, and although he plays hurt, I believe the cumulative effects of his injuries and porous offensive line are catching up to the 2-time Super Bowl winner. I believe we've seen Roethlisberger's best, and he'll continue to decline from here as he battles aches, pains, conditioning and a philosophical disagreement with OC Todd Haley.

| 23 | Josh Freeman | TB | |
| 24 | Ryan Tannehill | MIA | |
| 25 | Christian Ponder | MIN | show |
[Jun 6th] Jason Wood says: Ponder has weapons this year, namely rookie Cordarelle Patterson and free agent prize Greg Jennings. Defenses will give Ponder throwing lanes as they key on Adrian Peterson, which means Ponder has upside to outperform his ADP. I wouldn't target Ponder, but I wouldn't panic if the draft unfolds in such as way that I'm faced with Ponder as my QB2.

| 26 | Matt Flynn | OAK | show |
[Jun 6th] Jason Wood says: Matt Flynn never got his chance in Seattle thanks to Russell Wilson, and now he faces a similar battle in Oakland against talented rookie Tyler Wilson. If Flynn clearly earns the starting job, Flynn should be on the radar as a low end QB2 with upside. The receiving corps is deep, but we're not sure it's talented. Yet the Raiders should be in plenty of shoot outs based on the sorry state of the defense.

| 27 | Jake Locker | TEN | show |
[Jun 6th] Jason Wood says: I haven't seen much from Jake Locker in his two seasons to convince me the Titans didn't err in drafting him 8th overall in the 2011 draft. He's inaccurate, hasn't shown much growth, and throws way too many passes into dangerous coverage. His mobility helps mask his passing deficiencies, but not enough for me to target Locker on draft day.

| 28 | Michael Vick | PHI | show |
[Jun 6th] Jason Wood says: We have no idea what Chip Kelly has planned. Michael Vick could flourish in Kelly's fast paced, wide open system but Vick could just as easily lose the starting job in camp to either Nick Foles or Matt Barkley. If Vick is named the starter, he's worth the risk as a mid-round QB2 but don't overpay particularly since Vick never plays a full season even when he's not fighting for a job.

| 29 | Geno Smith | NYJ | |
| 30 | Chad Henne | JAX | show |
[Jun 6th] Jason Wood says: The Jaguars don't have a quality NFL starter on their roster, which generally means that whoever gets the Week One start will eventually be replaced by the backup. Henne isn't a good quarterback, but he's better than Blaine Gabbert.
