Outlook: Ballard was snatched from the waivers by the Patriots after the New York Giants placed him there during the summer of 2012. After spending the whole season on the Physically Unable to Perform list, Ballard is ready to go, but whereas he was once luxury depth, now he might be a necessity. Rob Gronkoski has been dealing with the aftermath of his broken arm (now up to four surgeries) and now has to have surgery for his back in mid-June. It's looking more and more like Gronkowski will miss all or part of Training Camp, which gives Ballard a chance to show his ability. As banged up as Gronk has been, the Pats and fans will keep a close eye on Ballard as he could have a big role early if Gronkowski isn't ready.
