TB - Sign Johnthan Banks - Thu May 23, 01:33 PM

The Tampa Bay Buccaneers signed CB Johnthan Banks, their second-round draft pick, to an undisclosed four-year deal Thursday, May 23.

Footballguys view: Banks is another key piece in the Bucs revamped secondary. He's big, has good straight line speed, and can jam receivers at the line of scrimmage. Banks is position versatile and can play corner or free safety if the team needs him to.

Tampa Bay Buccaneers CB Darrelle Revis (knee) has been cleared to cut and change directions. 'I feel very confident,' Revis said Tuesday, May 21.

TB - Injury updates on two - Mon May 20, 08:07 PM

TB - Adrian Clayborn injury update - Mon May 20, 08:01 PM

Tampa Bay Buccaneers DE Adrian Clayborn (knee) took part in all individual drills during organized team activities Monday, May 20, but will not take part in full-team drills.

TB - Akeem Spence may win starting job - Mon May 20, 08:00 PM

Tampa Bay Buccaneers DL Akeem Spence is possibly on track to win the starting job at nose tackle. Spence got the majority of the snaps with the starters Monday, May 20. Spence also got praise from head coach Greg Schiano, who said he was possibly one of the NFL's strongest players.

Footballguys view: Spence has a strong base and is adept at anchoring against the run. He's got good range for a big man and can make tackles down the line of scrimmage on plays that go away from him.

TB - Darrelle Revis on schedule - Mon May 20, 04:44 PM

Tampa Bay Buccaneers CB Darrelle Revis (knee) is on schedule in his rehab and has been able to cut and change direction in drills. The Buccaneers will continue to build Revis' strength and conditioning though June.

Footballguys view: Revis should be on the field when the team gets together for training camp in late July. The team will be careful with the veteran and monitor his progress closely as he comes back from this injury.

TB - Coach expecting Darrelle Revis to be 100 percent - Mon May 20, 04:36 PM

Tampa Bay Buccaneers head coach Greg Schiano said the team is expecting CB Darrelle Revis (knee) to be 100 percent for the start of the season but will be prepared if Revis is not fully recovered. 'That's how we're planning,' Schiano said. 'I mean, we have faith that he's gonna recover. And look, if it isn't exactly that way right away, then we'll adapt. 85- or 90 percent of Darrelle Revis is still better than most 100 percent other corners, right?'

TB - Josh Freeman is the starter - Mon May 20, 03:19 PM

Tampa Bay Buccaneers head coach Greg Schiano cleared things up by saying that QB Josh Freeman is the team's starting quarterback Monday, May 20. Schiano said that QB Mike Glennon could 'play quickly' if necessary Sunday, May 19.

Footballguys view: Of course Freeman is the starter. Glennon has a strong arm but needs serious work on his mechanics, accuracy, and footwork. It would take a huge collapse from Freeman in order for Glennon to play in 2013.

TB - Several in mix for No. 3 WR job - Sun May 19, 04:10 PM

Tampa Bay Buccaneers WRs Tiquan Underwood, Kevin Ogletree, Steve E. Smith and Chris Owusu are expected to be candidates for the No. 3 wide receiver job.

Footballguys view: Underwood may be the frontrunner in this competition. He's worked with head coach Greg Schiano since their days together at Rutgers. Owusu may be the sleeper player here. If he can stay healthy Owusu has a nice size/speed combination and arguably the highest upside of any of these players.

TB - Three DTs to compete for starting job - Sun May 19, 03:53 PM

Tampa Bay Buccaneers DTs Akeem Spence, Derek Landri and Gary Gibson will compete for the starting nose tackle job during offseason workouts and training camp.

TB - Coach not ruling out Mike Glennon starting - Sun May 19, 01:09 PM

Tampa Bay Buccaneers head coach Greg Schiano said he believes QB Mike Glennon can play quickly and has not ruled out the possibility of Glennon taking over the starting job over QB Josh Freeman. 'We have a starting quarterback. It's not like we're looking to find a starter. But competition is competition. Mike Glennon is a fierce competitor. I knew that when he was coming out of high school. Now being able to work with him a little, you can see it on the practice field,' Schiano said.

Footballguys view: Schiano is being coy here. Freeman is the starter and it would be a shock to see Glennon win the starting job in training camp. He's got a big arm but accuracy and decision making are problems for the rookie from NC State. Glennon also has a hitch in his dropback and his footwork needs to be cleaned up. He reminded some in the scouting community of Derek Anderson (Panthers) during the pre-draft process.

TB - Waive Willie Moseley - Fri May 17, 05:06 PM

The Tampa Bay Buccaneers waived LB Willie Moseley Friday, May 17.

TB - Mike Glennon not taking a back seat - Fri May 17, 02:34 PM

Tampa Bay Buccaneers QB Mike Glennon is not going to take a back seat when it comes to competition with the team. "First I just want to be a good teammate," Glennon said. "I'm going to be a good teammate to all the guys, to the quarterbacks, to the line, to everybody. And earn the respect that way and kinda take everything in and listen to what they have to say. But at the same time, I don't know if taking a backseat would be the right term because I'm a competitor and I'm going to do whatever I can to compete. So at the same time, though, I understand I'm a rookie and it's a process, and I'm just going to worry about getting better each and every day and let things play out that way."

TB - Mike Glennon to see most preseason snaps - Thu May 16, 08:11 AM

Tampa Bay Buccaneers general manager Mark Dominik said third-round pick QB Mike Glennon is expected to dominate the preseason snaps under center.

Footballguys view: No real surprise here. The team wants to see what Glennon can do and want to give him the most experience possible. Starter Josh Freeman is entering the final year of his contract and the Bucs want to see if Glennon can be their guy if Freeman is lost via free agency. Glennon has a big arm but needs to show better mechanics, decision making, and footwork when dropping back.

TB - Sign Akeem Spence - Wed May 15, 03:12 PM

The Tampa Bay Buccaneers signed DT Akeem Spence to four-year, $2.65 million deal that includes $485,000 bonus Wednesday, May 15.

Footballguys view: Spence is a short but stout DT who can play the nose for Tampa Bay. He's functionally strong, understands leverage, and can create inside push on the QB.

TB - Darrelle Revis won't take part on OTA's - Wed May 15, 02:43 PM

Tampa Bay Buccaneers CB Darrelle Revis (knee) will not take part in organized team activities with his new team next week. Revis will instead continue to work with Tampa Bay rehab personnel as he tries to get his knee back to full strength.

Footballguys view: The Bucs paid a big price in trade (and new contract) to Revis and will monitor his progress closely as he comes back from this injury. We could even see him limited in training camp as the team doesn't want to aggravate the injury.

TB - Sign William Gholston - Tue May 14, 04:07 PM

The Tampa Bay Buccaneers signed DE William Gholston to a four-year contract Tuesday, May 14. Financial terms of the deal were not disclosed.

Footballguys view: Gholston is a tall pass rusher and that extra size helps him close on the QB quickly. He's got a large wingspan (82 1/2") and can bat down passes at the line of scrimmage as evidenced by his 13 pass breakups in college. He's position versatile and can line up at RDE, LDE, or move inside to DT if needed.

TB - Two draft picks signed - Mon May 13, 04:31 PM

The Tampa Bay Buccaneers have signed fifth-round draft choice DE Steven Means and sixth-round draft choice RB Mike James to four-year deals. Financial terms were not disclosed.

Footballguys view: James is a versatile runner who can also contribute as a fullback (if needed) or a pass catcher out of the backfield. He'll compete with second-year RB Michael Smith to be the primary backup behind Doug Martin.

TB - Mike Williams contract update - Fri May 10, 02:44 PM

The Tampa Bay Buccaneers will resume contract extension talks WR Mike Williams Monday, May 13.

TB - Glennon needs to be more accurate - Thu May 9, 03:57 PM

Buccaneers rookie QB Mike Glennon completed just 58.5% of his passes in 2012, which ranked 62nd out of 80 FBS quarterbacks that attempted at least 300 passes. However, he was not helped by his receivers. NC State dropped 47 passes, tied for the most of any AQ school.

Footballguys view: Glennon has a rocket arm and can make all the throws necessary at the pro level. He does need to work on his footwork which should help improve his accuracy. Glennon will compete for the primary backup position behind Josh Freeman in 2013.

TB - Da'Quan Bowers apologizes for off field issue - Wed May 8, 02:27 PM

Tampa Bay Buccaneers DL Da'Quan Bowers apologized for an off the field issue that resulted in his arrest, before charges were reduced. 'There is no right way to make a mistake,' he said. 'I just apologize to the fans and the organization that I put in that (position). I apologize to my family. ... That's not what I'm about. That's not the type of person that I am. I appreciate (general manager) Mark (Dominik) and the Glazers and Coach (Greg) Schiano for being with me through this whole situation.'

TB - Da'Quan Bowers wants to improve - Wed May 8, 02:26 PM

Tampa Bay Buccaneers DL Da'Quan Bowers knows he can do more on the football field, something he hopes to show in 2013. 'It's not only injuries, but (my) play. I haven't been the dominant player that I know I can be,' Bowers said. 'I have a lot of potential to be one of the best and the elite at what (I) do, and I haven't shown that at this level yet. (It was) injuries and not understanding what was going on. It takes time to mature at this level. I think my maturation process is going on now and a lot of it has already passed. So, I'm just looking for an opportunity now.'

Footballguys view: This is a make or break year for Bowers. He missed the first six games of the 2012 season as he recovered from an Achilles' injury. Bowers is back to full strength and the team needs him to provide chaos (and a pass rush) from the edge in 2013.

TB - Not interested in two DEs - Wed May 8, 01:05 PM

The Tampa Bay Buccaneers are not interested in signing free-agent DE Dwight Freeney (Colts) or DE John Abraham (Falcons).

Footballguys view: Freeney has reportedly dropped his earlier asking price of around $6MM per year. Abraham has gotten interest from teams like the Titans and Broncos but has yet to sign a new deal. The Buccaneers lack experienced pass rushers at the DE position after losing Michael Bennett (Seahawks) in free agency.

TB - GM expects Darrelle Revis will be ready for season - Sun May 5, 11:57 AM

Tampa Bay Buccaneers Mark Dominik said in a radio interview that he fully expects CB Darrelle Revis (knee) to be ready for the start of the regular season.

Footballguys view: Revis should be ready for the regular season with his new team. The seasoned veteran instantly upgrades the Bucs secondary. Second-round pick Johnthan Banks (Mississippi State) will compete with Eric Wright for the starting spot opposite Revis.

Tampa Bay Buccaneers general manager Mark Dominik said the team expects DT Akeem Spence to be their starting nose tackle this season.

TB - Mike James could be No. 2 RB - Fri May 3, 10:20 AM

Tampa Bay Buccaneers RB Mike James could have the inside track as the team's backup running back behind RB Doug Martin, according to general manager Mark Dominik.

Footballguys view: James is an average runner and average receiver out of the backfield. We like second-year RB Michael Smith as the backup behind Martin. Smith is incredibly fast and does a good job of cutting at speed. He reminds some of former Steelers RB Willie Parker.

Tampa Bay Buccaneers TE Drake Dunsmore has announced his retirement from professional football.

TB - Nate Kaeding retiring - Thu May 2, 01:26 PM

Tampa Bay Buccaneers PK Nate Kaeding (groin) has decided to retire from professional football after suffering a groin injury a few days ago. 'It's not like I can switch the way I kick, or change this way, or use a different muscle,' Kaeding said. 'Especially for me, and the way I kick, that's the main lever in the kicking motion. It's impossible to avoid it and I've got these chronic issues.'

TB - To talk contract with Mike Williams - Thu May 2, 11:18 AM

Contract extension talks between the Tampa Bay Buccaneers and WR Mike Williams are expected to resume soon, according to his agent, Hadley Englehard. Williams' representative said general manager Mark Dominik asked for talks to be postponed until after the NFL Draft so that he could focus on adding more talent from the college ranks and trading for CB Darrelle Revis.

Footballguys view: Williams is entering the final year of his rookie contract and may be seeking a five-year deal for around $35MM. He had a bounce back season in 2012 as the WR2 for the Bucs opposite Vincent Jackson and finished as the 18th best WR in fantasy football. Williams is a good downfield receiver and has strong chemistry with QB Josh Freeman.

TB - William Gholston could have impact - Wed May 1, 05:41 PM

Tampa Bay Buccaneers DE William Gholston is expected to be part of a rotation at defensive end and could have an impact as a pass rusher.

Footballguys view: Gholston has good agility for a player his size. He can avoid blocks off the edge and has the length to get to the QB faster than some realize. Gholston also has a good punch and disengages from blockers quickly. He's a high motor player who should become a coaches favorite in Tampa.

TB - Johnthan Banks expected to have extensive role - Wed May 1, 05:19 PM

Tampa Bay Buccaneers CB Johnthan Banks is expected to be at least the No. 3 cornerback this season.

Footballguys view: We wouldn't be surprised if Banks won the No. 2 cornerback spot opposite All Pro Darrelle Revis. Banks is big, athletic, and not afraid to get his nose dirty in run support. He's position versatile as well and can line up at free safety if need be.

TB - 10 UDFAs added - Mon Apr 29, 04:29 PM

The Tampa Bay Buccaneers have signed undrafted free-agent WR Jerry Johnson (UCLA), CB Rashaan Melvin (Northern Illinois), WR D.J. Monroe (Texas), LB Willie Moseley (Buffalo), OT Brice Schwab (Arizona State), RB Akeem Shavers (Purdue), OG Adam Smith (Western Kentucky), CB Branden Smith (Georgia), OT Nick Speller (Massachusetts) and OT Jason Weaver (Southern Mississippi). Terms of the contracts were not disclosed.

TB - Ronde Barber still welcome to return - Mon Apr 29, 03:45 PM

Tampa Bay Buccaneers general manager Mark Dominik said the team is still willing to re-sign free-agent FS Ronde Barber.

Footballguys view: The Buccaneers have re-worked their secondary this offseason trading for All Pro CB Darrelle Revis and selecting CB Johnthan Banks (Mississippi State) in the second-round of the 2013 NFL Draft. Barber would be a welcome fit at free safety if he decides to stay with the Buccaneers.

TB - Not interested in Tim Tebow - Mon Apr 29, 10:11 AM

The Tampa Bay Buccaneers aren't interested in free-agent QB Tim Tebow (Jets).

Footballguys view: The Buccaneers didn't have any desire to add Tebow as a 'throw in' with Darrelle Revis when they made the trade for the All Pro CB last week. They added a young QB to the roster when they selected Mike Glennon in the third-round of the 2013 NFL Draft.

TB - Two UDFAs brought in - Sat Apr 27, 10:44 PM

The Tampa Bay Buccaneers signed undrafted free agents TE Evan Landi (South Florida) and WR Tim Wright (Rutgers) Saturday, April 27.

TB - Jeff Demps acquired - Sat Apr 27, 04:12 PM

The Tampa Bay Buccaneers have acquired RB Jeff Demps and a seventh-round draft choice from the New England Patriots for RB LeGarrette Blount.

Footballguys view: Demps will likely spell Doug Martin but not eat into his carries much.

TB - Mike Glennon added in third round - Fri Apr 26, 09:15 PM

The Tampa Bay Buccaneers selected North Carolina State QB Mike Glennon with the 73rd overall selection in the 2013 NFL Draft.

Footballguys view: Josh Freeman is unlikely to lose sleep over this pick. Glennon has a nice arm but is not very mobile and his build doesn't give you a lot of confidence he'll remain upright on a big hit, much less survive.

TB - Johnthan Banks selected 43rd overall - Fri Apr 26, 07:25 PM

The Tampa Bay Buccaneers selected Mississippi State CB Johnthan Banks with the 43rd overall pick in the 2013 NFL Draft.

Footballguys view: The Bucs continue to revamp their secondary, pairing Banks up with the newly acquired Darrelle Revis. With Revis Island on the other side of the field, the rookie will be tested early and often.

TB - Could move back into the first round - Wed Apr 24, 01:57 PM

The Tampa Bay Buccaneers could move back into the first round of the NFL Draft, something they have a history of doing. "You get a little antsy, but we've already gone through scenarios," Buccaneers general manager Mark Dominik said. "Who are the guys you'd consider going to get depending on how far they drop? Here's what it takes. We've gone through a lot of (debates) that way."

TB - Open to getting back in first round - Wed Apr 24, 01:18 PM

Tampa Bay Buccaneers general manager Mark Dominik indicated the team is open to trading into the first round if a player they are interested in falls to a certain point.

TB - Josh Freeman can be a more vocal leader - Tue Apr 23, 02:27 PM

Tampa Bay Buccaneers QB Josh Freeman said he can be more vocal of a leader, but in 2012 he thought he needed to perform better before getting on other members of the team.

Footballguys view: Freeman is entering the final year of his rookie contract. If he plays more consistently this year then the team won't have any problem handing him a new long-term contract.

TB - Josh Freeman has good relationship with coach - Tue Apr 23, 02:23 PM

Tampa Bay Buccaneers QB Josh Freeman said he has a good relationship with head coach Greg Schiano, and they spend a lot of time together during the offseason talking about a wide range of things football and life related. 'The entire off-season, I've been in constant communication with coach,'' Freeman said. 'I had a lot of time and sat down and talked with him about a number of things football related, life related. Me and coach, we've got a great relationship. Every now and then, somebody will call you and say, 'Hey man, what's up with you and your coach?' But we know how it is. It's something I'm not really concerned about it. I'm kind of living it and I know how it is.''

Footballguys view: Freeman wasn't a pick of the new regime in Tampa Bay. He's considered a potential franchise QB but has yet to consistently play up to that label. We'll see if he can be more evenly productive in 2013.
