PHI - DC still not mentioning defensive front - Fri May 24, 03:13 PM

Philadelphia Eagles defensive coordinator Bill Davis said the team is moving toward using the 3-4 defensive alignment but have not fully moved to the alignment at this point. 'Multiple is the best way,' Davis said. 'I know you guys are tired of that answer. I know you want to hear one or the other or something. What we're doing here is we're taking that wide-nine 4-3 and we're moving in the direction of the 3-4, but where we stop is yet to be determined by the players we have.'

PHI - Michael Vick says he's fastest QB - Fri May 24, 01:44 PM

Philadelphia Eagles QB Michael Vick said he's still the fastest quarterback in the league, despite the presence of San Francisco 49ers QB Colin Kaepernick and Washington Redskins QB Robert Griffin III. 'These guys are young and they're fast and they're quick, the thing I do have is a very quick get-up,' Vick said. 'I really don't feel like there's a quarterback in the league who can beat me in a 40-yard dash. If somebody wants to set something up, I'll be more than glad to accept the challenge.'

Footballguys view: We love that confidence coming from Vick and we should see him utilized more as a runner in the Chip Kelly offense. Last year Vick only ran the ball 62 times. This season he may approach 100 rushing attempts on the year. Kelly's offense at Oregon had 685 carries in 2012.

PHI - DeSean Jackson could excel in new offense - Thu May 23, 06:21 PM

Philadelphia Eagles head coach Chip Kelly confirmed that he prefers larger and taller players at most positions on his team, but he's in favor of protecting his smaller players like WR DeSean Jackson. Jackson touched the ball progressively less in each of his five NFL seasons in part because the team worried about keeping him healthy. Jackson only played in five games last year because of fractured ribs and only scored one touchdown. He hopes he can go back to being extremely productive in the team's new offense with larger players creating mismatches for their opponents. 'I'm challenging myself to be able to play every position,' said Jackson, who's been hinting all offseason that he could be lining up in the backfield as well. 'There might be a play or a different position where I normally would not line up or be in, but the leeway of the offense gives us the opportunity to go inside and outside and things like that, so I'm taking advantage of the opportunity to learn the whole offense and be in different spaces throughout the game.'

Footballguys view: Jackson could be featured in the Kelly system as a big play option on shorter routes. This gets rid of the ball quickly and lets Jackson do his damage with run after the catch ability. His current ADP is WR33 and he's coming off the board at 7.11.

PHI - DC says two doing well at move to OLB - Thu May 23, 02:07 PM

PHI - James Casey to be used in multiple spots - Thu May 23, 01:07 PM

Philadelphia Eagles FB James Casey, who was used primarily as a fullback for the Houston Texans, is expected to be used all over the place in head coach Chip Kelly's 'Joker' offense. Casey had 34 catches last year, but he caught 111 passes in his final season at Rice.

Footballguys view: Casey needed a fresh start and gets one with the Eagles. He never quite played up to his potential with the Texans but still has upside. We'll see if Casey can become a favorite target in this passing game. He's position versatile and can line up anywhere in the formation.

PHI - Zach Ertz not participating in OTAs - Thu May 23, 12:44 PM

Philadelphia Eagles TE Zach Ertz, the team's second-round draft pick, is unable to participate in organized team activities because of NFL rules until he graduates from college at Stanford.

PHI - James Casey has surgery - Thu May 23, 12:43 PM

Philadelphia Eagles FB James Casey (knee) underwent arthroscopic surgery on his right knee Thursday, May 23, and he's expecting to be back at practice in two weeks. The team expects Casey to be ready for training camp.

Footballguys view: Casey has an opportunity to be involved in this Chip Kelly offense more than he was utilized in Houston. He needs to get healthy, stay healthy, and show that he can be more than just an athletic freak. Casey has the size, versatility, and athleticism to create mismatches when he's on the field. He needed a fresh start and is an interesting TE to keep an eye on for fantasy owners in deep leagues.

PHI - Michael Vick will have to change in new offense - Wed May 22, 06:58 PM

Philadelphia Eagles QB Michael Vick, who held onto the ball for an average of 3.07 seconds last year, will likely have to change in order to be successful in head coach Chip Kelly's new offense. Kelly, while at Oregon, preached that his quarterbacks were urged to get the ball out of their hands in 1.5 seconds. 'I think there is a lot more to Michael,' Kelly said back in February. 'I think quarterbacks are a byproduct of their experience. But to sit here and say I understood the system that Michael's been in whether he's with the Falcons under Coach (Dan) Reeves or here, that depends on the system that you run. Some of the systems that they run they don't ask him to get the ball out quick. Do I think he can get the ball out quick? I think he's got an unbelievable release. It's up and out and it's quick.'

Footballguys view: Vick is athletic and that should be featured in the Kelly inside zone read offense. However, Kelly's QBs need to get rid of the ball quickly to keep a defense on their toes and keep the high powered offense churning. We'll see if Vick can change this part of his game and lead the offense in 2013.

PHI - Early prognosis on OLB roles - Wed May 22, 01:03 PM

Philadelphia Eagles OLB Connor Barwin will probably play three downs next year and has looked comfortable in practices so far. Trent Cole, however, doesn't look like a cozy fit in the team's new 3-4 defense. He won't be asked to drop back much but must learn to consistently set the edge, and the transition may be difficult. Brandon Graham is also a pass-rushing specialist, but Bill Davis' hybrid scheme probably fits him a little better for sack production.

PHI - LeSean McCoy OK - Tue May 21, 11:02 AM

Updating previous reports, Philadelphia Eagles RB LeSean McCoy (knee) is OK after leaving workouts Monday, May 20, with knee discomfort.

Footballguys view: Eagles fans (and McCoy's fantasy owners) can breathe a sigh of relief here. The team will monitor McCoy closely so he doesn't suffer a worse injury to his knee. Philadelphia should be one of the most run heavy teams in the league under new head coach Chip Kelly.

PHI - Nick Foles sees more time with starters - Mon May 20, 03:18 PM

Philadelphia Eagles QB Nick Foles received 21 snaps with the first-team offense during organized team activities Monday, May 20, while QB Michael Vick received 15 snaps.

Footballguys view: Foles is competing with Vick to be the team's starter in 2013. Vick is the better runner and may be the better fit for Chip Kelly's system. Foles could be the better passer if he works on the accuracy and decision making issues he had at times last year.

PHI - LeSean McCoy leaves workout - Mon May 20, 03:08 PM

Philadelphia Eagles RB LeSean McCoy (knee) left organized team activities Monday, May 20, after suffering a knee injury. He did not look to be limping or in any pain after the workout.

Footballguys view: It sounds like a minor injury at this time. The Eagles will monitor him closely and get him back on the practice field when he's ready. McCoy is set for a big workload this year. The Chip Kelly offense is designed off the inside zone read run. Last year's Oregon team ran 685 times under Kelly.

PHI - Miguel Maysonet released - Mon May 20, 09:32 AM

The Philadelphia Eagles released RB Miguel Maysonet.

Footballguys view: The undrafted rookie from Stony Brook became expendable when the Eagles added Felix Jones last week. He's got good balance, leg drive, and burst. Maysonet should be able to latch on somewhere else for training camp.

PHI - Will Shaw signs - Mon May 20, 09:27 AM

The Philadelphia Eagles signed undrafted free-agent TE Will Shaw (Youngstown State) to an undisclosed deal.

PHI - Expected to cut Miguel Maysonet - Sun May 19, 04:13 PM

The Philadelphia Eagles are expected to waive RB Miguel Maysonet.

Footballguys view: The undrafted rookie from Stony Brook wasn't needed on the roster after the team added Felix Jones last week. He'll be able to catch on with another team before training camp.

PHI - Vick working on ball security - Sun May 19, 02:05 PM

Sheil Kapadia, from Phillymag.com, reports Eagles QB Michael Vick says new head coach Chip Kelly has shown him a new way to hold the football when he runs. "The other day, I broke out in the pocket, and the first thing Chip told me was to tuck the football," Vick said. "So I showed him how I was running with it, and he looked at it and he knocked the ball right out of my hands. And he was like, 'Hold it like this.' And what he told me felt comfortable. I had a tighter grip on the football. That should secure that problem as long as I work on it."

Footballguys view: Ball security has been an issue with Vick during his time with the Eagles. He's set to run more under Kelly than he did under Andy Reid last year and ball security is paramount for his success on the ground. Vick is competing with second-year QB Nick Foles for the starting job in 2013.

PHI - Jason Avant works with defense - Sat May 18, 12:31 PM

Philadelphia Eagles WR Jason Avant saw some time as a defensive back during organized team activities this week. Avant does not believe his work with the defense clouds his future with the team.

Footballguys view: Avant is battling for a roster spot at the end of the WR corps. Working on defensive back isn't a great sign for his security on the depth chart. Chip Kelly had TE Clay Harbor working on defense (OLB) too.

PHI - Two WRs could compete for one spot - Fri May 17, 06:06 PM

Philadelphia Eagles WRs Riley Cooper and Arrelious Benn may have to compete for one roster spot during training camp. Both are bigger receivers that can block and play special teams.

Footballguys view: Benn needed a change of scenery after failing to stay healthy and play up to his potential with the Buccaneers. Cooper is the seasoned veteran who is fearless when running routes over the middle. It will be interesting to see how this plays out in training camp.

PHI - Believe Felix Jones can contribute - Fri May 17, 06:00 PM

The Philadelphia Eagles believes RB Felix Jones can make the final roster and contribute on offense this season.

Footballguys view: Chip Kelly's offense at Oregon ran the ball 685 times in 2012. He may not run it that much this year with the Eagles but they will be a run heavy team. Jones gives them depth behind LeSean McCoy and Bryce Brown. Playing as a third-string back with limited touches could help keep Jones fresh.

PHI - Three TEs expected to receive playing time - Fri May 17, 04:24 PM

Philadelphia Eagles head coach Chip Kelly indicated TEs Brent Celek, Zach Ertz and James Casey are expected to receive playing time during games this season.

Footballguys view: There could be plenty of targets for the TEs in the Kelly system this year. Celek is the leader of the group and could be the featured player at the position. He has a $4.5MM cap number this year and may be asked to take a pay cut before we get to training camp. It will be interesting to see how this position battle and the targets therein shake out.

PHI - Michael Vick looks bigger - Fri May 17, 01:17 PM

Philadelphia Eagles QB Michael Vick looks motivated to succeed this year. '(Vick's) noticeably bigger and enthused about the offense,' Philadelphia Inquirer's Zach Berman writes. Vick was in a system that had less designed runs for him last year, but the offense under new head coach Chip Kelly could play better to his strengths with an improved offensive line. Vick took snaps with the first team during organized team activities this week, and he's the favorite to start in Week 1 over QB Nick Foles.

Footballguys view: If Vick wins the starting job he's going to run a lot more than he did in 2012. That added bulk will help him stand up to the NFL beating he's going to take in Chip Kelly's zone read offense.

PHI - Will look at Jeremy Maclin as returner - Thu May 16, 02:48 PM

Philadelphia Eagles head coach Chip Kelly said the team will look at WR Jeremy Maclin as a punt returner during organized team activities. Kelly said Maclin had experience as a returner but is not sure if Maclin will be used in the role. Maclin indicated he would be open to returning punts.

Footballguys view: Maclin is dangerous in the open field because he's fast and can make defenders miss. We'll see if he can impress given this new opportunity in training camp.

PHI - Barkley showing 'fantastic' accuracy - Tue May 14, 08:45 PM

Albert Breer, from NFL Network, is reporting via Twitter that rookie QB Matt Barkley has shown 'fantastic' accuracy in Eagles minicamp.

Footballguys view: Barkley may be third in the QB competition behind Michael Vick and Nick Foles but he's working hard to prove himself in camp. The Chip Kelly system requires the QB to make quick decisions and accurately distribute the football to the skill position players. Barkley is a good fit for what the coach wants.

PHI - Felix Jones does not know what his role will be - Tue May 14, 03:02 PM

Philadelphia Eagles RB Felix Jones does not know what his role will be with the team, or what type of offense the team plays. Jones does not want to get ahead of himself.

Footballguys view: Jones will find out soon enough. The Eagles are going to be a run heavy offense under Chip Kelly. Last year the Oregon Ducks ran the ball 685 times under Kelly and featured the inside zone read. That offense should be exciting to watch because the spread and the tempo. The team needs quality talent at the RB position and Jones will compete with Chris Polk and Miguel Maysonet to be the third-string RB behind LeSean McCoy and Bryce Brown.

Philadelphia Eagles RB Felix Jones (knee) said he is completely healthy. 'Feeling good ... Feeling fast,' Jones said. Jones dealt with a knee issue in 2012.

PHI - Marvin McNutt cut - Tue May 14, 11:12 AM

The Philadelphia Eagles released WR Marvin McNutt.

Footballguys view: McNutt was a sixth-round pick by the Eagles last year but recorded no catches as a rookie. He's a big, physical wide receiver with good straight line speed. McNutt struggles to get open but may be able to find a spot with another team for training camp.

PHI - Felix Jones signs - Tue May 14, 08:29 AM

The Philadelphia Eagles signed free-agent RB Felix Jones (Cowboys) to a one-year deal.

Footballguys view: The Eagles could be the most run heavy team in 2013. Chip Kelly's offense spreads the defense out and is based off the inside zone read. Jones will battle Chris Polk and Miguel Maysonet for the third-string job behind LeSean McCoy and Bryce Brown.

PHI - Donovan McNabb to retire with team - Tue May 14, 08:10 AM

Free-agent QB Donovan McNabb (Vikings) said on his radio show that he will retire as a member of the Philadelphia Eagles in September.

Footballguys view: McNabb played 11 seasons with the Eagles and led the team to 5 NFC Championship Games and 1 Super Bowl. The Eagles will host the Chiefs (and former coach Andy Reid) on Thursday September 19th and that's when the ceremony for McNabb will be. Now the debate can start about whether or not he deserves to be in the Hall of Fame.

PHI - Lane Johnson does not work with starters - Mon May 13, 03:21 PM

Philadelphia Eagles OT Lane Johnson did not work with the first-team offense during the organized team activities Monday, May 13. OT Dennis Kelly worked at right tackle with the starting offense. Head coach Chip Kelly said people should not read much into Johnson not working with starters.

Footballguys view: The Eagles drafted Johnson with the fourth overall pick in the 2013 NFL draft. It would be surprising if he doesn't begin the season in the starting lineup.

PHI - Michael Vick, Nick Foles share reps - Mon May 13, 03:04 PM

Updating a previous report, Philadelphia Eagles head coach Chip Kelly said QBs Michael Vick and Nick Foles split reps with the first-team offense during organized team activities Monday, May 13.

The Philadelphia Eagles signed undrafted free-agents WR Will Murphy (Oregon) and DL Daryell Walker (Hampton).

PHI - Two released - Mon May 13, 10:37 AM

The Philadelphia Eagles released WR DeMarco Sampson and DT Ronnie Cameron.

Footballguys view: Sampson was a seventh-round pick by the Cardinals in 2011. He's got an intriguing size/speed combination but durability and inconsistency have prevented him from developing as a pro.

PHI - Matt Barkely could win QB job - Sun May 12, 03:11 PM

Philadelphia Eagles QB Matt Barkley could have a chance to win the starting quarterback job during offseason workouts and training camp.

Footballguys view: Anything could happen in Philadelphia. Barkley has the skill set to be successful in a Chip Kelly offense. He makes quick decisions and can accurately deliver the football on underneath routes and screen passes. Barkley will compete with Michael Vick and Nick Foles for the starting job in training camp.

PHI - Matt Barkley said he will fit in offense - Sat May 11, 01:13 PM

Philadelphia Eagles QB Matt Barkley said he will make himself fit into whichever offense head coach Chip Kelly wants to use. 'You know, I'll make it fit,' he said. 'It doesn't matter what plays we run, I'm going to find a way to help this team out, and I know Coach Kelly has a way of working things out as well in terms of how he schemes and how he calls plays, so I'm not worried. I'm just worried about the here and now and what I can do right now.'

Footballguys view: Kelly's offense requires the quarterback to make quick decisions and get the ball to the skill players via pass or handoff. If also requires the quarterback to zone read the best rusher away from the play side. Barkley is not a scrambler but that doesn't make him a bad fit. In fact, his accuracy and high football intelligence is a good match for this system.

PHI - LeSean McCoy expects to have productive season - Thu May 9, 02:46 PM

Philadelphia Eagles RB LeSean McCoy said he expects to have a very productive season in head coach Chip Kelly's offense in 2013. 'We have tons of different sets with different backs. You run so much,' McCoy said. 'There are so many different fast-paced movements from motioning out, from running routes and things like that. It's so open. You're trying to get guys in the open field. This is a good offense.' McCoy said he expects RBs Bryce Brown and Chris Polk to receive playing time because of the type of offense the team will use.

Footballguys view: We're expecting McCoy to have a top 5 fantasy season again in 2013. Under Chip Kelly the Oregon offense had 685 rushing attempts in 2012. The Kelly offense is a run based system based off of inside zone read. Kelly spreads the field out with the formation and then zone reads the best defender on the outside. This gives them another blocker on the play side and creates big rushing lanes for the running backs.
