MIA - Brandon Gibson works in slot -
Miami Dolphins WR Brandon Gibson lined up as the slot receiver when the team used three-receiver sets during organized team activities Tuesday, May 21.
Footballguys view: Gibson is competing for playing time behind Mike Wallace and Brian Hartline. Davone Bess was traded to the Browns earlier this year leaving a void at the slot position. Armon Binns is competing with Gibson to be the team's WR3 in 2013.
MIA - Several candidates for punt returner job -
Miami Dolphins WR Brian Hartline, WR Brandon Gibson and CB Brent Grimes worked as punt returners during organized team activities Tuesday, May 21. Head coach Joe Philbin did not rule out the possibility of RB Marcus Thigpen being the punt and kick returner this season.
MIA - Nate Garner rotates in two spots -
Miami Dolphins OG Nate Garner rotated in at left guard and center during organized team activities (OTAs) Tuesday, May 21. He was the team's backup right tackle last season.
MIA - Michael Egnew works with starters -
Miami Dolphins TE Michael Egnew began team drills in organized team activities (OTAs) Tuesday, May 21, ahead of TE Dustin Keller. Head coach Joe Philbin said Egnew earned the reps after a strong offseason.
Footballguys view: Keller was a big name free agent signing but he won't be handed the starting job. We imagine he should win the job in camp but will face competition from Egnew. Keller has upside but has yet to put it all together and play up to his potential as a pro.
MIA - Lamar Miller works with first-team offense -
Miami Dolphins RB Lamar Miller worked predominantly with the first-team offense, but RBs Daniel Thomas, Mike Gillislee and Marcus Thigpen also saw carries Tuesday, May 21, in organized team activities (OTAs).
Footballguys view: No surprise here. Miller should be the Dolphins starting running back in 2013. He is fast, quick, and can change direction without losing much speed. Miller has the ability to score from anywhere on the field. Thomas and Gillislee will compete in camp to be the primary backup behind Miller.
MIA - Jamar Taylor undergoes surgery -
Miami Dolphins CB Jamar Taylor (hernia) was in Philadelphia Tuesday, May 21, undergoing surgery to repair a sports hernia.
Footballguys view: Expected recovery time is three to six weeks, and Taylor should be ready for the start of training camp. The rookie from Boise State has a good size/speed combination. He can get physical with receivers at the line of scrimmage but he can also turn to cover downfield.
MIA - Brian Hartline could return punts -
Miami Dolphins WR Brian Hartline is getting a look at returning punts at organized team activities. Hartline has never returned punts and will compete with RB Marcus Thigpen. "Possibly, but in what situations, I couldn't tell you," Hartline said of potentially returning kicks. "But they [coaching staff] made a point to tell me to go and catch punts every day."
Footballguys view: Hartline is the team's WR2 starting opposite WR1 Mike Wallace. They may limit his snaps on special teams so he can stay fresh for the offense.
MIA - Ryan Tannehill strong in practice -
Miami Dolphins QB Ryan Tannehill was sharp during organized team activities Tuesday, May 21. Tannehill had big passes to WRs Brian Hartline and Mike Wallace. TE Dustin Keller was impressed with Tannehill's first practice. "You would think a guy who used to play wide receiver the best thing he does is run the ball," Keller said. "But he puts the ball right on the money and he's a good decision maker, as well."
Footballguys view: The Dolphins have been searching for a real franchise QB ever since Dan Marino retired. That's what they have in second-year QB Tannehill. With the improved weapons around him (Dustin Keller, Mike Wallace) we could see Tannehill take a sizable jump in production this season.
MIA - Brent Grimes looks good in OTAs -
Miami Dolphins CB Brent Grimes (Achilles') shined in organized team activities practice Tuesday, May 21. Grimes looked healthy after coming off Achilles' surgery, batting down multiple passes in practice.
MIA - Reshad Jones to attend OTAs -
Miami Dolphins SS Reshad Jones has changed his mind and will attend organized team activities Tuesday, May 21, after originally planning to sit out this week in an effort to convince the team to start contract negotiations with him. General manager Jeff Ireland said the two sides will 'eventually' discuss an extension if Jones showed up.

MIA - Randy Starks to sit out workouts -
Miami Dolphins DT Randy Starks will not participate in organized team activities because of his contract situation.
MIA - Four have been cleared to take part in workouts -
Miami Dolphins RB Daniel Thomas (knee), TE Charles Clay (knee), OT Lance Louis (knee) and CB Richard Marshall (back) have received medical clearance to participate in organized team activities.
Footballguys view: Thomas is going to compete with rookie Mike Gillislee (Florida) to be the backup behind Lamar Miller. It's a make or break year for Thomas and he needs to stay healthy to prove his worth as a backup pklayer.
MIA - Reshad Jones not present -
Miami Dolphins SS Reshad Jones was not present for the team's offseason conditioning session Monday, May 20. The reason for his absence is not known, but some teammates believe it is about his contract situation. It is not known if Jones will participate in the organized team activities this week.
MIA - Mike Gillislee will compete for starting job -
Miami Dolphins RB Mike Gillislee is expected to compete with RBs Lamar Miller and Daniel Thomas for the starting running back job during offseason workouts and training camp.
Footballguys view: Gillislee is a good all-purpose back and was praised in college at Florida for his pass protection skills. He gets stronger as the game goes on and averaged 2.0 yards after contact per rush in the second half of games last year compared to 1.5 yards after contact per rush in the first half.
MIA - Dion Jordan expects clearance by camp -
Miami Dolphins DE Dion Jordan (shoulder) said he expects to receive medical clearance to participate by the time training camp begins.
Footballguys view: Getting Jordan on the field will be a boost for the pass rush. He's an explosive pass rusher with good first step quickness and snap anticipation. Jordan had five sacks last season at Oregon, none of which came against a double-team. He was the only one of the top 10 DE/DT/OLB prospects with at least a 90 grade by Scouts, Inc. to not have a sack against a double-team.
MIA - Have not considered extension for Reshad Jones -
The Miami Dolphins have not discussed the possibility of signing SS Reshad Jones to a contract extension at this point. Jones is entering the final year of his contract.

MIA - Three LBs could compete for starting job -
Miami Dolphins LBs Koa Misi, Jelani Jenkins and Josh Kaddu may compete for the starting strongside linebacker job during training camp.
MIA - Two expected to compete for No. 3 WR job -
Miami Dolphins WRs Brandon Gibson and Armon Binns are expected to compete for the No. 3 wide receiver job during offseason workouts and training camp.
Footballguys view: We like Gibson in this battle here. Binns has good size but lacks the concentration and explosion that Gibson has. Gibson has the ability to be effective as a red zone target because of his wingspan and strong hands.
MIA - Dion Sims contract update -
Updating a previous report, the Miami Dolphins signed TE Dion Sims to a four-year deal worth around $2.6 million.
MIA - Sign Mike Gillislee -
The Miami Dolphins signed RB Mike Gillislee (Florida) to a four-year contract worth $2.322 million, including $162,800 bonus Friday, May 17.
Footballguys view: Gillislee is a tough interior runner who gets stronger as the game goes on. He averaged 2.0 yards after contact per rush in the second half of games last year compared to 1.5 yards after contact per rush in the first half. He's a good runner, reliable pass protector, and decent receiver out of the backfield. Gillislee will compete with Daniel Thomas to be the primary backup behind Lamar Miller in 2013.
MIA - Two players waived injured -
The Miami Dolphins have waived injured WR Taylor Stockemer (undisclosed) and DL Chas Alecxih (undisclosed).
MIA - Rupert Bryan signed -
The Miami Dolphins have signed undrafted free-agent FB Rupert Bryan (Florida International). Terms of the contract were not disclosed. Bryan was an offensive tackle in college but the team plans to use him as a fullback.
MIA - Sign Dion Sims -
The Miami Dolphins signed TE Dion Sims to a four-year contract Friday, May 17. Financial terms of the deal were not disclosed.
Footballguys view: Sims is built like an offensive lineman but has the natural receiving skills to be an effective target at the pro level. He's overcome durability and maturity issues in college and has intriguing upside for the Dolphins. Sims looks in passes regularly and has the size to block out defenders from the ball. He'll begin his pro career as a backup behind Dustin Keller but dynasty owners need to keep their eye on this rookie.
MIA - Marvin McNutt claimed -
The Miami Dolphins have claimed WR Marvin McNutt off waivers from the Philadelphia Eagles.
Footballguys view: McNutt is a big, physical WR who can be a good red zone target. He struggles to gain separation in his routes and thus has to make many contested catches. McNutt is not a lock to make the team and will have to fight for a spot on the depth chart in training camp.
MIA - Patrick Scales waived -
The Miami Dolphins have waived LS Patrick Scales.
MIA - Mike Wallace thinks chemistry with QB will be fine -
Miami Dolphins WR Mike Wallace said he does not think building chemistry with QB Ryan Tannehill will not be too difficult and expects the chemistry to be fine once training camp begins. Wallace said he works with Tannehill after each practice.
Footballguys view: Tannehill has better weapons around him this year and should be able to make more plays than he did last year. He's got a big arm, athleticism, and fantastic pocket presence. Wallace should be able to become a favorite of Tannehill quickly.
MIA - Salary could be factor in PK competition -
The Miami Dolphins could consider the salaries of PKs Dan Carpenter and Caleb Sturgis in their competition for the kicking job. Sturgis is scheduled to make one-fifth the salary Carpenter will make in 2013.
MIA - Aaron Corp signs -
The Miami Dolphins signed free-agent QB Aaron Corp (Cowboys) to a one-year deal.
Footballguys view: Corp was originally a USC QB who then transferred to Richmond. He went undrafted in 2012 and this is his third team in two years. Corp will compete with Pat Devlin for the team's third-string job behind Ryan Tannehill and Matt Moore.
MIA - Jonathan Martin happy to know role -
Miami Dolphins OT Jonathan Martin is relieved to know he is set to play left tackle this season, replacing the departed OT Jake Long (Rams). The team is privately optimistic Martin can do the job, and become a good left tackle. Martin is working to add 20 pounds this offseason, going up to 318. He said he not only wants to get bigger, but also 'stronger and tougher.'
Footballguys view: Martin played left tackle in college at Stanford where he protected the blind side of Andrew Luck. He's athletic enough to play on the left side of the line but struggles against edge rushers with a combination of power and speed. He needs to bulk up but at the same time not lose any of the quickness on his kick step.
MIA - Jared Odrick not too concerned -
Miami Dolphins DL Jared Odrick said Tuesday, May 14, that he doesn't view the selection of DE Dion Jordan as a threat to his job. 'None whatsoever,' Odrick said. 'I plan on being a solid, consistent contributor to this defense for many years to come.'
MIA - Lamar Miller working with NFL starter -
Miami Dolphins RB Lamar Miller has been working out with San Francisco 49ers RB Frank Gore during the offseason. Gore, a fellow University of Miami alum, counseled Miller on lessons learned in the NFL. Miller said Tuesday, May 14, he is staying at 215 pounds, but adding more muscle mass.
Footballguys view: Miller is getting the nod as the team's starter this year. He'll have to prove that he can handle the full workload in 2013. Miller's current ADP is RB24 and he's coming off the board near the middle of round four. Rookie Mike Gillislee and veteran Daniel Thomas will compete for the backup job behind Miller.
MIA - Daniel Thomas not conceding anything -
Miami Dolphins RB Lamar Miller is considered the front-runner for the starting running back job, although RB Daniel Thomas said Tuesday, May 14, that he shouldn't be overlooked. 'I don't know why (Miller) would have the inside track,' Thomas said. 'It's an open competition. Everybody has a fair shot. The best player is going to get the job. Nobody has a leg up. I'm looking to be that guy. That's why I put the work in.'
Footballguys view: Thomas has struggled to impress during his time in the pros. Miller should be the starter for the Dolphins this year and Thomas will have to compete with rookie Mike Gillislee for the backup job.
MIA - No switch for Koa Misi -
Miami Dolphins LB Koa Misi said Tuesday, May 14, that the team had initial discussions about switching him to middle linebacker, but that will not happen. LB Dannell Ellerbe is expected to play the position.
MIA - Two on pace for camp -
Miami Dolphins CB Brent Grimes (Achilles') and OG Lance Louis (knee) are expected to be ready for the start of training camp.
MIA - Brent Grimes update -
Miami Dolphins CB Brent Grimes (Achilles') said he is doing running drills, not rehab work.
MIA - Richard Marshall cleared -
Miami Dolphins CB Richard Marshall (back) has been cleared to practice. He is a favorite to win a starting cornerback spot.
MIA - Dion Sims to push for playing time -
Miami Dolphins TE Dion Sims is expected to push for playing time after dropping to 264 pounds from the 280-pound range. The team expects to use him in two-tight end sets with TE Dustin Keller. Keller isn't known to be a great blocker, and Sims will be relied upon to block.
MIA - Rookie Gillislee gets stronger as the game goes on -
Dolphins rookie RB Mike Gillislee averaged 2.0 yards after contact per rush in second half of games last year for the Gators, compared to 1.5 yards after contact per rush in the first half.
Footballguys view: Gillislee is a versatile player who can contribute as a runner or receiver out of the backfield. He'll compete with Daniel Thomas to be the primary backup behind Lamar Miller. We wouldn't be surprised to see him win the job over Thomas.
MIA - Had interest in Gosder Cherilus -
The Miami Dolphins made a serious run to sign Indianapolis Colts OT Gosder Cherilus early in free agency, but Cherilus decided to accept the Colts' contract offer.
MIA - Tyson Clabo contract update -
Updating a previous report, the Miami Dolphins signed OT Tyson Clabo to one-year deal worth $3.5 million.
MIA - Dion Jordan to miss workouts -
Miami Dolphins DE Dion Jordan will not be taking part in upcoming team workouts until his class graduates from college.
MIA - Dion Sims could see significant playing time -
Miami Dolphins TE Dion Sims could see time in two-tight end sets this season because of his blocking ability.
Footballguys view: The team has high hopes for Sims. He's an excellent athlete who can create mismatches when he's on the field. The team added Dustin Keller in free agency earlier this year but he's never quite played up to his potential. Sims will be in a two TE set this year but could have a bigger role in the future.
