JAX - Claim Kyle Love -
The Jacksonville Jaguars claimed Kyle Love (Patriots) off waivers Thursday, May 16.
Footballguys view: Love joins former teammate Brandon Deadrick in Jacksonville. Both D-Linemen have been released and picked up by the Jaguars this week. Love was recently diagnosed with Type-2 diabetes and has lost 20 pounds this offseason.
JAX - Denard Robinson plays some QB -
Jacksonville Jaguars RB Denard Robinson, who was drafted as a running back, ran some plays at quarterback during organized team activities Wednesday, May 15. Head coach Gus Bradley declined to say which kind of plays Robinson was running, though.
Footballguys view: No surprise here. Robinson is one of the most versatile players in this draft class and can contribute as a passer, runner, receiver, and in the return game. We could see the Jaguars run some Wildcat/option plays with Robinson at QB this year.
JAX - Montell Owens released -
The Jacksonville Jaguars released RB Montell Owens.
JAX - Dan Gerberry signs -
The Jacksonville Jaguars signed free-agent C Dan Gerberry (Lions) to an undisclosed deal.
JAX - Make roster move -
The Jacksonville Jaguars cut OT Jeff Nady Wednesday, May 15.
JAX - Two linemen dealing with injuries -
Jacksonville Jaguars head coach Gus Bradley said DE Jason Babin (knee) and DT Roy Miller (knee) did not participate in organized team activities Tuesday, May 14, because of knee injuries.
JAX - Ace Sanders could miss extended period -
Jacksonville Jaguars head coach Gus Bradley said WR Ace Sanders (abdomen, hip) may not participate in offseason workouts until next month because he is dealing with abdomen and hip injuries.
JAX - Matt Scott expected to have edge for No. 3 QB job -
Jacksonville Jaguars QB Matt Scott is expected to have the edge over QB Jordan Rodgers (hernia) for the No. 3 quarterback job entering training camp because Rodgers will miss the remaining offseason workouts after undergoing sports hernia surgery.
Footballguys view: No surprise here. Scott also has an advantage because he's a much better athlete. He could be a nice option QB but struggles with accuracy as a passer.
JAX - Coach thinks camp will make QB situation more clear -
Jacksonville Jaguars head coach Gus Bradley said he expects the competition between QBs Blaine Gabbert and Chad Henne will become more clear once the team puts pads on during training camp because the coaches can see how they perform during certain situations.
Footballguys view: It's a make or break year for Gabbert as the team is growing tired of his ineffectiveness. The new regime could start making plans to find his replacement in 2014 if Gabbert continues to struggle this year.
JAX - QBs splitting reps -
Jacksonville Jaguars QBs Blaine Gabbert and Chad Henne are splitting first-team reps evenly in OTAs.
Footballguys view: The Jaguars have a QB competition that should last through training camp. Reports are coming out of minicamp that Gabbert is struggling to impress on short/underneath passes. Henne is a serious contender for the starting job and could win the job outright. We won't know who emerges from this competition until around week three of the preseason.
JAX - Gabbert continues to struggle -
Mark Long, from the Associated Press, reports Jaguars QB Blaine Gabbert continues to struggle in minicamp with accuracy on short routes.
Footballguys view: Gabbert is in a make or break year in 2013. He needs to play up to his first-round draft status and show that he's the franchise QB the Jags wanted. He's competing with Chad Henne to be the starter.
JAX - Make roster moves -
The Jacksonville Jaguars claimed DL Brandon Deaderick (Patriots) off waivers from New England Patriots and waived WR Cole McKenzie Tuesday, May 14.
Footballguys view: Deaderick is your classic run stuffer but provides little as a pass rusher. He gives the Jaguars more veteran depth (and versatility) as they continue to re-shuffle their front seven on defense.
JAX - Jordan Rodgers undergoes surgery -
Jacksonville Jaguars QB Jordan Rodgers (hernia) underwent sports hernia surgery Tuesday, May 14, and will be out until the beginning of training camp.
Footballguys view: Rodgers, the younger brother of Packers QB Aaron Rodgers, is trying to make the team as a developmental QB behind Blaine Gabbert and Chad Henne. This injury will cause him to lose reps to fellow undrafted free agent QB Matt Scott (Arizona).
JAX - Justin Blackmon met with coach and front office -
Jacksonville Jaguars WR Justin Blackmon has met with head coach Gus Bradley and general manager David Caldwell after getting suspended for the first four games of the 2013 season.
Footballguys view: Blackmon is a talented player but has to prove that he can stay focused, stay out of trouble, and become a consistent impact player on the field. He has been a regular in the team's facility since the suspension, and according to this report the Jaguars still believe in him.
JAX - Maurice Jones-Drew continues to make progress -
Jacksonville Jaguars RB Maurice Jones-Drew (foot) said he is making progress in his rehab from foot surgery. He was able to run at 75 percent Monday, May 13.
Footballguys view: Jones-Drew had surgery to repair his Lisfranc injury in late December 2012. No word on what his status will be for training camp in August. We imagine the team will bring him along slowly during that time so the injury is not aggravated. Jones-Drew should be near 100 percent healthy by the start of the regular season.
JAX - Two players miss workout -
Jacksonville Jaguars WR Ace Sanders (groin) and DT Roy Miller (undisclosed) did not participate in the organized team activities Monday, May 13. Both were held out as a precaution.
JAX - Matt Scott participates -
Jacksonville Jaguars QB Matt Scott (ankle) is no longer wearing a walking boot and was able to participate in the organized team activities Monday, May 13.
Footballguys view: Scott had a high ankle sprain earlier in minicamp. He needs to get and stay healthy if he wants to impress enough to make the final roster or practice squad. Scott is extremely athletic but has 'say it don't spray it' accuracy and needs a ton of work as a passer. Contests against Oregon (22-44-210-0-3) and UCLA (15-25-124-0-0) in 2012 highlight how his game falls apart against pressure.
JAX - Three rookies will miss some workouts -
Jacksonville Jaguars RB De'Leon Eskridge, WR Cole McKenzie and LB Jeremiah Green will miss some of the team's offseason workouts because their colleges have not completed classes yet. Green will only miss three workouts while McKenzie will miss the rest of the workouts.
JAX - Marcus Trufant not expected to start -
Jacksonville Jaguars CB Marcus Trufant is not expected to be one of the starting cornerbacks this season but probably will compete for playing time in the team's defensive subpackages.
Footballguys view: It usually takes some time for rookie CBs to get up to speed. Nickel packages are used now more than ever in this pass happy league. Trufant will see plenty of snaps this year.
JAX - Marcus Trufant contract update -
Updating a previous report, the Jacksonville Jaguars have signed CB Marcus Trufant to a one-year deal worth $1.005 million.
JAX - GM still not interested in Tim Tebow -
Jacksonville Jaguars general manager David Caldwell said the team is still not interested in signing free-agent QB Tim Tebow.
Footballguys view: There's a petition going around from Jaguars fans that want Caldwell to change his mind and add the Jacksonville native. Tebow's been on the open market for about a week now and has not drawn much interest. He could get more interest as a free agent if he was open to a position switch.
JAX - Hope to get Denard Robinson 10-15 touches -
Jacksonville Jaguars general manager David Caldwell praised RB Denard Robinson's burst at mini-camp and said they hope to get him 10-15 touches per game along with returning kicks.
Footballguys view: We'll see how Robinson looks as a running back in the preseason. He's an electric runner but gets too upright and exposes his midsection to a lot of hits. That also leads to ball security problems. This story improves his dynasty value, but his value in re-draft leagues is extremely low at this time.
JAX - Blaine Gabbert to get a shot -
Jacksonville Jaguars general manager David Caldwell said QB Blaine Gabbert will get a fair shot to prove he's the quarterback of the future.
Footballguys view: The team needs to find out whether or not the new coaching regime thinks Gabbert can play. He's struggled with durability and inconsistency during his pro career and 2013 is a make or break season. Gabbert needs to make better decisions with the football and also needs to show better poise under pressure if he wants to play up to his potential.
JAX - Release Antwaun Molden -
The Jacksonville Jaguars released CB Antwaun Molden Tuesday, May 7.
Footballguys view: The Jaguars had to make room on the roster since they added free agent Marcus Trufant.
JAX - Sign Marcus Trufant -
The Jacksonville Jaguars signed CB Marcus Trufant (Seahawks) Tuesday, May 7. Terms of the deal were not disclosed.
Footballguys view: The long time Seahawks cornerback reunites with former Seattle DC (and current Jags head coach) Gus Bradley. He played the nickel corner for Seattle last year and should now man that position for Jacksonville.
JAX - Marcus Trufant visiting -
The Jacksonville Jaguars are visiting with free-agent CB Marcus Trufant (Seahawks) Tuesday, May 7.
JAX - Two players waived -
The Jacksonville Jaguars have waived RB Richard Murphy and LB Greg M. Jones.
JAX - Two UFDAs signed -
The Jacksonville Jaguars have signed undrafted free-agent RB De'Leon Eskridge (San Jose State) and DE J.J. Griggs (Akron). Terms of the contracts were not disclosed.
JAX - Tobias Palmer impresses -
Jacksonville Jaguars undrafted rookie WR Tobias Palmer impressed the team at mini-camp.
JAX - Think Josh Evans can play both S positions -
The Jacksonville Jaguars believe FS Josh Evans can play either free safety or strong safety.
Footballguys view: Evans plays bigger than his size and has the range to cover a large portion of the field. He's capable in run coverage but could use better arm strength to wrap up opponents.
JAX - Dwayne Gratz could start -
Jacksonville Jaguars CB Dwayne Gratz could win one of the starting cornerback jobs this season. Defensive backs coach DeWayne Walker said Gratz reminds him of San Francisco 49ers CB Carlos Rogers.
JAX - Jonathan Cyprien likely will start -
Jacksonville Jaguars SS Jonathan Cyprien likely will be the team's starting strong safety this season. The team is expected to use him close to the line of scrimmage.
Footballguys view: We love the addition of Cyprien. He can fly all over the football field and loves to hit. Cyprien is an enforcer who will intimidate opponents. He's a great 'in the box' safety with the ability to stuff the run consistently.
JAX - OL coach happy with Luke Joeckel -
Jacksonville Jaguars offensive line coach George Yarno has been very impressed with how OT Luke Joeckel has looked during the team's rookie minicamp. 'He has excellent movement skills, great balance, he's a very smart kid,' Yarno said. 'He's working hard. He's going to get better fast. He's competitive. Love what I've seen so far. He's so smooth, a fluid mover. He has great, natural balance. His lower body has a lot of power in it. He has a low center of gravity. He has all those things you look for in a tackle, especially. I'm really excited to get to work with him.'
JAX - Two QBs sitting out practice -
Jacksonville Jaguars QBs Matt Scott (ankle) and Jordan Rodgers (groin) are not participating in practice Sunday, May 5. Rodgers may be able to participate in individual drills during the practice.
Footballguys view: Both Scott and Rodgers are trying to make the team as undrafted free agents. The Jaguars could choose to carry a third QB behind Blaine Gabbert and Chad Henne.
JAX - Tobias Palmer practicing -
Jacksonville Jaguars WR Tobias Palmer (illness) is participating in practice Sunday, May 5, after missing practice Saturday, May 4, because of a stomach virus. He did not have a groin injury like was previously reported.
JAX - Jordan Rodgers dealing with injury -
Jacksonville Jaguars QB Jordan Rodgers (groin) participated in practice Saturday, May 4, but is dealing with a groin injury and did not attempt any rollouts. Rodgers said he participated because the team was thin at quarterback.
Footballguys view: Rodgers is the younger brother of Packers QB Aaron Rodgers and is trying to make the team as an undrafted free agent. He's competing with fellow UDFA Matt Scott for a roster spot.
JAX - Update on two injured WRs -
Updating a previous report, Jacksonville Jaguars WR Ace Sanders (groin) and WR Tobias Palmer (groin) did not participate in practice Saturday, May 4, because of groin injuries.
JAX - Matt Scott injury update -
Updating a previous report, Jacksonville Jaguars QB Matt Scott (ankle) suffered a high-ankle sprain during practice Friday, May 3.
Footballguys view: High ankle sprains are known to linger and this could be a problem for a mobile QB like Scott. He injured the ankle on a play where he threw an interception to Jonathan Cyprien. Scott is athletic and fast but his accuracy is problematic. Trying to make the team as an undrafted free agent he'll need to stay healthy in order to prove himself.
JAX - Two WRs not practicing -
Jacksonville Jaguars WR Ace Sanders (undisclosed) and WR Tobias Palmer (undisclosed) are not participating in practice Saturday, May 4.
Footballguys view: It doesn't sound like it's anything serious for either WR. Sanders is a smaller receiver but lightning fast. He can help as a return man and potential slot WR.
JAX - Matt Scott in walking boot -
Jacksonville Jaguars QB Matt Scott (ankle) is wearing a walking boot after suffering an ankle injury during practice Friday, May 3.
Footballguys view: Scott is an incredible athlete and can be dangerous as a scrambler. His accuracy is a work in progress and that's why he fell undrafted. The team will take it easy on Scott until this ankle is healed.
JAX - Luke Joeckel adjusting to RT -
Jacksonville Jaguars OT Luke Joeckel said he was not totally comfortable working at right tackle during practice Friday, May 3, but knows it will take time to adjust to the position. 'It was different. My first step wasn't as quick. It will be a work in progress, but I felt pretty good about today. I can't rush it. It will take a while to feel totally comfortable, but I have a little time before Week 1 and the first preseason game,' Joeckel said.
JAX - Denard Robinson gets various looks -
Jacksonville Jaguars RB Denard Robinson made his debut Friday, May 3, at the team's rookie minicamp. He showed his speed and versatility, taking a majority of his repetitions with the first-team offense. He lined up in the backfield and at receiver during the two-hour practice.
Footballguys view: Robinson spent the pre-draft process preparing for life as a WR in the NFL. At the Senior Bowl he worked with the wideouts and looked lost. He improved his hand/eye coordination at the Scouting Combine where he worked with the WR group again. Now the Jaguars are listing him as a RB. He's an electric runner and a player who can line up in multiple positions. If he's going to be a RB then he'll have to be coached up on running with better pad level before contact.
JAX - Coach still trust Justin Blackmon -
Jacksonville Jaguars head coach Gus Bradley said he still trusts WR Justin Blackmon even though Blackmon has been suspended for the first four games of the 2013 season. 'I told Justin I do trust him,' Bradley said. 'We both have to earn each other's trust and I don't want trust to be mistaken for being naïve.' Bradley said he has spoken six or seven times with Blackmon since the team learned of his suspension.
Footballguys view: The team saw what Blackmon could be on the field last year when he caught 64 passes for 865 yards and five touchdowns. He's a talented player but off field problems have plagued him during his entire football career.
JAX - Maurice Jones-Drew at rookie minicamp -
Jacksonville Jaguars RB Maurice Jones-Drew (foot) is at the team's facility doing rehab during the team's rookie minicamp.
Footballguys view: There's going to be no holdout for MJD this year. He is entering the final year of his contract and should put his best foot forward to prove that he is still one of the best in the game.
JAX - Cecil Shorts III talks Justin Blackmon -
Jacksonville Jaguars WR Cecil Shorts III said WR Justin Blackmon will be missed and that teammates will need to support him. "We are going to miss Justin Blackmon to start the season...guys will need to step up and we support him," Shorts said.
Footballguys view: Shorts emerged as a leader on the field last year finishing the season with 55 receptions, 979 yards, and 7 TDs. Those numbers made him the 22nd best WR in fantasy football last year. This season the team will rely on him even more as Blackmon will miss the first four games of the year.
JAX - Cecil Shorts III praises coach -
Jacksonville Jaguars WR Cecil Shorts III praised head coach Gus Bradley. "Coach Bradley is a fun guy to be around everyday and it's nice to have a new vibe around here," Shorts said.
Footballguys view: Shorts is a leader for this team on and off the field. Fantasy football's 22nd best WR last year, Shorts is in line for an even bigger role this year. Justin Blackmon has been suspended for the first four games of the regular season. This means more targets for Shorts and veteran Mohomed Massaquoi.
JAX - Justin Blackmon staying -
The Jacksonville Jaguars could release WR Justin Blackmon without any further financial ramifications after his suspension. However, they have no intention to do so.
Footballguys view: Blackmon is incredibly talented but had off field concerns when he came out of college after two DUI arrests. He's eligible to practice with the team through training camp but is then going to be suspended for the first four games of the year. He's eligible to return in week five.
JAX - Justin Blackmon admits mistake -
Updating a previous report, Jacksonville Jaguars WR Justin Blackmon admitted he made a mistake. 'I've made a mistake and I have no excuse. I am sorry & disappointed in myself for putting the Jaguars in this situation'
Footballguys view: No word as to what Blackmon did, but we're sure it will come out soon. He had off field concerns coming out of Oklahoma State after two DUI arrests in college. The Jaguars structured his contract where $7.1MM in bonus money would be wiped away if he was suspended.
JAX - Justin Blackmon suspended -
Jacksonville Jaguars WR Justin Blackmon has been suspended four games by the NFL.
Footballguys view: Some teams just can't catch a break. Jacksonville was already struggling and losing a player like Blackmon is the last thing they need. As the ESPN article stated, "besides Blackmon, the Jaguars' receiving corps is led by Cecil Shorts III, who led the team in receiving yards (979) and touchdowns (7), and includes veterans Jordan Shipley and Mohamed Massaquoi. The team also drafted former South Carolina receiver Ace Sanders in the fourth round of last week's draft." This certainly doesn't help QBs Blaine Gabbert and Chad Henne either.
JAX - Denard Robinson excited to play running back -
Jacksonville Jaguars RB Denard Robinson said he is excited to get the chance to play running back in the NFL. 'I'm excited (about playing tailback),' Robinson said during a Jaguars teleconference. 'They can put me in at receiver or running back or whatever. There's a lot of different positions so I'm excited about doing that."
Footballguys view: Robinson has the skill set to be a dangerous runner in the open field. He will have to change his style when running through trash at the line of scrimmage. He'll regularly get too upright which leaves him open to take big shots in the middle and causes ball security problems.
