GB - Desmond Bishop not ruling out return -
Free-agent LB Desmond Bishop (Packers) did not rule out the possibility of re-signing with the Green Bay Packers if he is not able to find the compensation he is looking for from another team.
GB - Brad Jones likely to be starter -
Green Bay Packers LB Brad Jones is likely to be a starter for the team this year after they released LB Desmond Bishop Monday, June 17.
GB - RB Green the starter through much of OTAs -
Green Bay Packers RB Alex Green has been working as the starter through much of the team's offseason program. He's competing with rookies Eddie Lacy (Alabama) and Johnathan Franklin (UCLA) for the starting job in 2013.
Footballguys view: Lacy is expected to win the starting job during training camp. Green had a chance last year to prove himself as the starter but failed to impress. Lacy was drafted in the second-round of the 2013 NFL draft to be the workhorse the team has been missing for years. We like Lacy as a RB3 with RB2 upside this season. Durability is a huge concern with Lacy and he'll need to stay healthy in order to play up to his potential.
GB - Desmond Bishop released -
The Green Bay Packers have officially released LB Desmond Bishop.
GB - Desmond Bishop to be cut -
The Green Bay Packers will release LB Desmond Bishop.
Footballguys view: The two sides couldn't agree on a paycut so Bishop hits the open market. He missed all of 2012 with a hamstring injury and will need to prove that he's healthy before latching on with a new team. Bishop can make plays when at full strength and is now one of the best players available in free agency. A team like the Chiefs could be interested. In Kansas City he would be reunited with new GM (and former Packers executive) John Dorsey. The Raiders could also have interest in Bishop.
GB - DuJuan Harris vows to be ready -
Green Bay Packers RB DuJuan Harris (lung) vows to be ready for the first day of training camp July 26. He had a 'grapefruit'-sized, non-cancerous cyst removed from his lung. 'I'll be ready,' Harris said over the weekend. 'I'll be there.'
Footballguys view: Harris needs to stay healthy if he wants to establish as spot on the depth chart. He could win the change of pace job behind rookie Eddie Lacy (Alabama). Harris is a good receiver out of the backfield and can make plays in space. Lacy is a banger between the tackles but has the footwork to eat up chunks of yardage in a hurry. Harris will have to compete with rookie Johnathan Franklin (UCLA) to be the primary backup behind Lacy.
GB - Davon House plans to be ready -
Green Bay Packers CB Davon House (shoulder) said over the weekend that he fully expects to be ready for the first day of training camp July 26. He said he 'would beg' the team doctor to let him take part in organized team activities (OTAs) and minicamp, but he was not cleared. He is expected to compete with CBs Casey Hayward, Sam Shields and Tramon Williams for a starting job in training camp and the preseason.
GB - James Jones thinks team can have three 1,000-yard WRs -
Green Bay Packers WR James Jones said he believes he, WR Randall Cobb and WR Jordy Nelson could all post 1,000-yard seasons in 2013. 'I've been on record as saying that I believe we have three 1,000-yard receivers in this room. I believe me, Randall and Jordy, if we all stay healthy, we can all reach over 1,000,' Jones said.
Footballguys view: It wouldn't be a stretch to see the Packers offense support three 1,000 yard receivers. The problem is they also have a quality pass catching TE in Jermichael Finley. Cobb is a top 10 WR and Nelson is a WR2 for fantasy owners. Jones makes for a great high end WR3 with upside in 2013.
GB - Brett Favre expects Aaron Rodgers to break records -
Retired QB Brett Favre said he believes Green Bay Packers QB Aaron Rodgers will be able to break all of his team records if he is able to stay healthy. 'Barring any injury, (Rodgers) will shatter everything I did there, except for maybe the consecutive games (streak),' Favre said. 'The guy has been tremendous. Great move on their part.'
Footballguys view: We're seeing Favre make up with the Packers here. There will be a day in the near future where he's welcomed back to Lambeau Field to see his number retired with the team.
GB - Desmond Bishop likely to be cut -
The Green Bay Packers are expected to cut LB Desmond Bishop (hamstring), barring an unlikely contract restructure or trade, according to a league source. Bishop missed the entire 2012 season due to a ruptured hamstring tendon in a preseason game Aug. 9.
Footballguys view: The team had Bishop on the trade block before the draft but found no takers. They could move on with A.J. Hawk and Brad Jones at inside linebacker.
GB - Preparing for more read-option -
The Green Bay Packers are putting more time into preparing for the read-option in 2013. 'We're going to do more,' defensive coordinator Dom Capers said. 'We're going to do more than we have because we know the first two teams we play run it. There will be a number of teams that have a little element of it in. How much it takes off, I don't know. It's like everything else. Things go in cycles. Over 28 years, I've seen a lot of cycles in the league.'
Footballguys view: The Packers were torched last year by 49ers QB Colin Kaepernick in the playoffs. Kaepernick racked up 181 yards rushing en route to a 49ers victory. With the read option growing in popularity it's only wise for every team to prepare for more of those looks.
GB - Aaron Rodgers looking to play 7-8 more years -
Green Bay Packers QB Aaron Rodgers said he would like to play seven or eight more seasons before he considers retirement. Rodgers said he expects to play well over the next seven seasons and would consider retirement at that point if the team wins a couple more championships.
Footballguys view: Rodgers still isn't 30 years old. Playing for another 7-8 years at a high level is certainly possible. Some thought durability was a concern with Rodgers but he's only missed two games over the last two seasons.
GB - Eddie Lacy contract update -
Updating a previous report, Green Bay Packers RB Eddie Lacy signed a four-year deal worth $3.392 million. The deal includes a $847,208 signing bonus.
GB - Eddie Lacy has added some weight -
Green Bay Packers RB Eddie Lacy said he currently weighs 238 pounds, which is more than he weighed when he played for Alabama. Lacy usually weighed between 225 pounds and 230 pounds during college.
Footballguys view: We'll see if Lacy loses some of that weight during his rookie season. It's not uncommon for rookie RBs to drop weight during the rigors of their first NFL season. Lacy is competing to be the Packers starting RB for the 2013 season. He's big, fast, and has good footwork in the hole and the open field. His biggest concern is durability.
GB - B.J. Coleman not pushing for No. 2 QB job -
Green Bay Packers QB B.J. Coleman does not appear to have done anything this offseason to push QB Graham Harrell for the No. 2 quarterback job.
Footballguys view: This contradicts an earlier report out of Packers minicamp. Coleman has a rocket arm but needs to make better decisions as a passer or he may end up on the practice squad again this year. Harrell is a poor backup QB and it would be a major blow for the Packers if Aaron Rodgers missed even a little time due to injury.
GB - Mike Neal could be used as situational OLB -
The Green Bay Packers could consider lining up DE Mike Neal at outside linebacker as a situational pass rusher this season.
GB - Randall Cobb's primary focus will be offense -
Green Bay Packers head coach Mike McCarthy said WR Randall Cobb will focus primarily on offense this season, and his special teams participation will depend on the other players on the team. McCarthy said he hopes other players will be able to fill Cobb's role on special teams.
Footballguys view: It's the smart move for the Packers. Cobb is an incredible weapon the team needs to feature as a pass catcher. They need to keep him healthy and fresh, so cutting into his time on special teams was the logical answer.
GB - DuJuan Harris to miss remaining workouts -
Green Bay Packers head coach Mike McCarthy said RB DuJuan Harris (lung) will not participate in any of the remaining offseason workouts but is expected to be ready for training camp. Harris said on his Twitter page that he had a cyst removed from one of his lungs.
Footballguys view: Harris is set to compete for a backup job behind rookies Eddie Lacy (Alabama) and Jonathan Franklin (UCLA). He did a fine job as a change of pace back last year but may lack the skill to be an every week starter. Keep an eye on his recovery (and production) in training camp.
GB - Jermichael Finley building muscle -
Green Bay Packers TE Jermichael Finley is estimated to be much closer to his listed weight of 247 pounds after regaining some bulk this offseason. Finley had dropped to around 235 pounds sometime during or after 2010, when he was aiming to play lighter to be used more as a wide recivier. But Finley's assessment of his earlier seasons saw that he was playing well while also retaining strength in mass, so he decided to go back to that physique. 'He's back to where I like to see him, the playing weight that he's playing with,' head coach Mike McCarthy said. 'He's stronger. He's playing with more confidence. ... I really like the offseason that Jermichael has put together so far.'
Footballguys view: The added bulk should help Finley take hits in 2013. With the loss of Greg Jennings (Vikings) we should see more targets for guys like Finley and WR James Jones in 2013.
GB - Johnny Jolly on limited practice plan -
Green Bay Packers DE Johnny Jolly is on a limited practice plan, according to head coach Mike McCarthy.
GB - Dezman Moses leaves practice early -
Green Bay Packers LB Dezman Moses (undisclosed) left practice early with a trainer Tuesday, June 4.
GB - Johnny Jolly says he will attend minicamp -
Green Bay Packers DE Johnny Jolly tweeted that he would be attending minicamp. It would be Jolly's first appearance since being reinstated from a three-year suspension.
GB - B.J. Raji contract update -
The Green Bay Packers are going to make DL B.J. Raji play out the final year of his contract in 2013 to earn a big, long-term contract.
GB - B.J. Raji will be asked to attack -
Green Bay Packers DL B.J. Raji will be asked to attack and create in 2013 like he did in 2010, when he recorded seven sacks. Raji is eating healthier and in shape. The Packers scheme is expected to help Raji.
Footballguys view: Raji can be a disruptive player in the middle of the line. He needs to get in shape so he doesn't wear out near the end of games.
GB - Sam Shields signs tender -
Green Bay Packers restricted free-agent CB Sam Shields has signed his one-year tender offer and will make $2.023 million this season.
Footballguys view: A smart move by the Packers here. Shields was considered the team's best cover corner in 2012 despite only starting eight games on the season. We'll see if the two sides can now work out a long-term agreement. The market for corners this offseason has not been hot.
GB - Sam Shields negotiating -
Drew Rosenhaus, the agent for restricted CB Sam Shields, will meet with the team Monday, June 3, to try and work out a new deal for his client. Shields and Rosenhaus hope to have a long-term deal wrapped up so that Shields can participate in the team's minicamp this week. If Shields were to play for his second-round tender this year, he'd make $2.02 million.
Footballguys view: The Packers have exclusive negotiating rights with Shields since no other teams signed him to an offer sheet before April 19. If Shields doesn't sign his tender by June 17, the team could reduce their offer to 110 percent of his 2012 pay, which would be $540,000.
GB - Mike Neal trying LB -
Green Bay Packers DL Mike Neal is trying out at linebacker. His athleticism could allow him to play a DE/LB role.
GB - Aaron Rodgers would like more balanced offense -
Green Bay Packers QB Aaron Rodgers said he would like to see the team have a more balanced offense this season because an improved running game would help the passing game. 'The ability to have a balance can give you those eight-man boxes and one-on-one matchups outside and open up some lanes for those guys. We usually win those one-on-one battles. When teams play more Cover 2 and match up or go three over two and trust their front four to not only stop the run but get after the passer, that really makes our job difficult,' Rodgers said.
Footballguys view: Fantasy owners need to take note here. The Packers haven't had a 100-yard rusher in the last 43 regular-season games (more than twice as long as any other active streak in NFL). That trend needs to change and it's why the team selected both Eddie Lacy (Alabama) and Jonathan Franklin (UCLA) in the 2013 NFL draft. We could see more balance from the team's offense this season.
GB - Sean Richardson expects to be ready for camp -
Green Bay Packers SS Sean Richardson (neck) said he is almost fully recovered from the neck surgery he had this offseason and expects to be ready by at least the start of training camp. He said he needs to pass two more tests before being cleared by the doctors.
GB - B.J. Raji wants to be dominant player -
Green Bay Packers DE B.J. Raji said he wants to become a dominant player this season but knows he has to do a better job at shedding blockers. 'For some reason I'm not disengaging as well as I have,' Raji said. 'So that's a big emphasis for me --- clearing the blocking and being able to make more plays.'
GB - Eddie Lacy signs -
The Green Bay Packers signed RB Eddie Lacy to an undisclosed four-year deal Wednesday, May 29.
Footballguys view: Lacy is set to become the Packers' featured running back. The bruiser from Alabama gets stronger as the game goes on and has good footwork for a big man. Lacy does have durability issues that caused him to fall to the second-round of the 2013 NFL draft. He only started 14 games in college but was bothered by leg injuries including a toe problem that had to be surgically repaired. The Packers haven't had a 100-yard rusher in the last 43 regular-season games (more than twice as long as any other active streak in NFL). We'll see if Lacy can fix that problem this year.
GB - Johnny Jolly not at OTAs -
Green Bay Packers DL Johnny Jolly has not joined the team for organized team activities. Head coach Mike McCarthy said he will address Jolly's situation when he returns to the team.
Footballguys view: Jolly is attempting a comeback in the NFL after being out of the league for three seasons. He was a 16-game starter in 2009 but was arrested multiple times for drug offenses after that. His roster spot is not guaranteed in 2013.
GB - David Fulton signed -
The Green Bay Packers have signed undrafted free-agent S David Fulton (Chowan University). Terms of the contract were not disclosed.
GB - Some believe Eddie Lacy may have toe problems soon -
At least three teams were told by their medical teams that Green Bay Packers RB Eddie Lacy (toe) could have problems with his surgically-repaired toe within the next two to three years.
Footballguys view: Medical problems were the reason why the Broncos chose Montee Ball instead of Eddie Lacy in the 2013 NFL draft. Lacy is a fine runner and is light on his feet for a big man. However, his durability issues (in only 14 college starts) led many teams to pass on Lacy.
GB - Evan Dietrich-Smith will start -
Green Bay Packers C Evan Dietrich-Smith will be the team's starting center this season.
GB - Nick Perry looking to drop weight -
Green Bay Packers LB Nick Perry said he would like to drop some weight this offseason so he can do a better job rushing the passer and drop into coverage. Perry is listed as 265 pounds, which is the heaviest among the team's outside linebackers.
GB - Nick Perry receive clearance -
Green Bay Packers LB Nick Perry (wrist) received medical clearance in April to fully participate in offseason workouts and other football activities.
GB - Tramon Williams healing -
Green Bay Packers CB Tramon Williams' (shoulder) nerve damage in his shoulder has drastically healed due to a workout regimen that includes yoga and jump ropes.
GB - QB high on Randall Cobb -
Green Bay Packers QB Aaron Rodgers said he believes WR Randall Cobb can be a receiver that catches at least 100 catches every season. Wide receivers coach Edgar Bennett said Cobb improved last season but still has things to work on to become more productive.
Footballguys view: Cobb is an explosive playmaker who can score anytime he touches the ball. He can fly around the field and make big gains off of short passes. Cobb was the 17th best fantasy WR last year and could finish in the top 15 this year. His current ADP is WR9 and he's coming off the board at 3.09.
GB - Johnny Jolly returning -
Green Bay Packers DE Johnny Jolly is expected to return to the team next week and begin participating in OTAs after completing a court-ordered drug treatment program.
GB - Alex Gillett signs -
The Green Bay Packers signed undrafted free-agent WR Alex Gillett (Eastern Michigan) to an undisclosed deal Wednesday, May 22.
GB - JC Tretter breaks ankle -
Green Bay Packers OL JC Tretter (ankle) broke his ankle during practice Monday, May 20, according to his agent. Tretter is expected to miss six months.
GB - Jerel Worthy say he will play in 2013 -
Green Bay Packers DT Jerel Worthy (knee) said he is going to play again at some point in 2013 after tearing his anterior cruciate ligament in Week 17.
Footballguys view: Worthy is considered a longshot to get on the field this year. He'll likely begin the season on the PUP or IR Designated To Return list.
GB - JC Tretter dealing with injury -
Green Bay Packers OL JC Tretter (undisclosed) is dealing with an injury and will not be available for the rest of organized team activities, according to head coach Mike McCarthy.
GB - Jerel Worthy injury update -
Green Bay Packers DT Jerel Worthy (knee) was wearing a brace over his left knee at organized team activities Tuesday, May 21. Worthy was not participating, and his status for 2013 is unknown.
GB - Desmond Bishop confident in abilities -
Green Bay Packers LB Desmond Bishop (hamstring) said he is completely healthy heading into this season, and that he plans on becoming the league's defensive Most Valuable Player in 2013. Bishop missed all of last season with a torn hamstring.
GB - Alex Green rushed back -
Green Bay Packers RB Alex Green (knee) admitted he rushed back from a torn anterior cruciate ligament to compete for carries in training camp last season. He said it was premature, and by December, his knee was sore and swollen.
Footballguys view: Green had his shot last year to prove himself as a starting caliber RB but struggled on the field and failed to impress. Now he's third or fourth on the depth chart since the Packers added both Eddie Lacy and Jonathan Franklin in the 2013 NFL draft.
GB - Five players signed -
The Green Bay Packers have signed free-agent CB Brandon E. Smith (Seahawks), and undrafted free-agent FB Jonathan Amosa (Washington), WR Tyrone Walker (Illinois State), LB Donte Savage (New Mexico State) and LB Jarvis Wilson (Prairie View A&M). Terms of the contracts were not disclosed. The team also released FB Ryan Roberson.
GB - Eddie Lacy not worried about toe -
Green Bay Packers RB Eddie Lacy (toe) said he is not worried about his surgically repaired toe and does not believe it will be a problem. 'It's nothing that I'm thinking about. I'm pretty sure I won't have any problems with it. It's holding up good. The surgery was basically perfect, and now it's about getting back to doing what I know how to do best,' Lacy said.
Footballguys view: Lacy needs to prove that he can stay healthy at the pro level. Only a 14 game starter in college he comes with a lot of durability questions around his big toe. Lacy is competing with fellow rookie Jonathan Franklin for the starting job in 2013.
GB - Eddie Lacy thinks he will fit offense -
Green Bay Packers RB Eddie Lacy said he believes he will fit in the offense well this season. 'I feel that I can fit into the offense perfectly. They won't have to change anything. I'll be able to go in there and adapt to it. It'll keep defenses guessing,' Lacy said.
Footballguys view: Lacy is a great fit for the Packers offense, if he can stay healthy. Known as a downhill runner, 64.7 percent of his rushes came between the tackles in 2012. Lacy averaged 7.6 yards per carry on such running plays with about one in every four attempts going for at least 10 yards.
