DEN - Walton has additional surgery - Wed Jun 19, 03:00 PM

Denver Broncos starting Center J.D. Walton has undergone another ankle surgery and may be out for the season. Team officials are hopeful he can return somewhere around the midway point of the season if his recovery goes well.

Footballguys view: A blow to the Broncos O-Line here. Manny Ramirez has been practicing with the first-team at Center but the team may not choose to start him in the regular season. Second-year Center Philip Blake missed his rookie season with a thumb injury but the Broncos may not trust an inexperienced player while in a Super Bowl window.

DEN - Could bring back Koppen - Wed Jun 19, 02:52 PM

The Denver Broncos could look to bring back free agent Center Dan Koppen now that starter J.D. Walton has undergone another ankle surgery. Walton's timetable for return is unclear at this time but some believe he could miss most of the season.

Footballguys view: The Broncos are in a Super Bowl window and would be unlikely to trust an inexperienced Center like 2012 fourth-round pick Philip Blake. Koppen was added last year and did a fine job filling in for an injured Walton. He has good chemistry with Peyton Manning and the team wouldn't miss a beat if they added Kopopen.

DEN - Ronnie Hillman thinks he can carry the load - Tue Jun 18, 12:18 PM

Denver Broncos RB Ronnie Hillman is confident that he can carry the load as the team's featured back this season, despite his size. 'You get that when you're a smaller guy,' Hillman said. 'You can't take the pounding, but I just brush it off. Of course you hear things. I'm not going to sit here and say I don't hear what they say, but you just got to let it go.' Hillman put on 15 pounds of muscle in the offseason, but the team has told him they'd like him to play around 190 to 195 pounds.

Footballguys view: Hillman might see himself as a featured back, but every indication out of Denver is that they see him as a complementary back that can provide a change of pace, especially outside of the tackles. He did not earn Peyton Manning's trust as a pass blocker last year, nor did he flash much in the way of playmaking ability, so he is probably an end of the bench lottery ticket unless he continues to run with the first team through the third week of the preseason.

DEN - Ronnie Hillman praises Montee Ball - Mon Jun 17, 08:49 PM

Denver Broncos RB Ronnie Hillman praised RB Montee Ball. 'He's a good kid, I can't say kid. He's older than me,' Hillman said with a laugh. 'He's a good dude, he's learning, he's doing good things out on the field. He's going to be good.'

DEN - Ronnie Hillman adds muscle - Mon Jun 17, 08:48 PM

Denver Broncos RB Ronnie Hillman added about 15 pounds of muscle in the offseason and got his frame up to 200 pounds. The team would like him to play between 190-to-195 pounds.

Footballguys view: Hillman has been working as the primary first-team back this offseason. He's getting about 75% of the reps with rookie Montee Ball (Wisconsin) getting about 25%. We'll see if Ball can win the job in training camp. The Broncos are going to use a RBBC with Ball as the 'Thunder' and Hillman as the 'Lightning.' Fantasy owners need to be cautious when drafting Ball because of his rising ADP. We like him as a low end RB2 but his current ADP is around RB20 and rising.

DEN - Balance may hurt Wes Welker's numbers - Mon Jun 17, 01:14 PM

The Denver Post's Mike Klis estimates that the Denver Broncos' passing offense would reach its peak if Demaryius Thomas gets 85 receptions and Eric Decker and Wes Welker each net around 75. Klis contends that the strength of this passing attack must continue to stem from outside receivers.

Footballguys view: Nobody expects Welker to duplicate the numbers he had with the Patriots. However, he should still be an every week fantasy starter. The Broncos are going to use an up tempo offense to keep defenses on their heels in 2013. The Denver Post puts his ideal number around 75 catches but we wouldn't be surprised to see Welker with 90 catches in 2013.

DEN - Ronnie Hillman has leg up to start? - Sun Jun 16, 11:39 PM

Denver Broncos RB Ronnie Hillman, Montee Ball and Knowshon Moreno are in a dogfight for the starting job heading into training camp and the preseason. Hillman and Ball are likely the top candidates to start, with Moreno seeing plenty of time on the field due to his pass-blocking abilities.

Footballguys view: Hillman has been getting about 75% of the workload with the first-team this offseason. Ball has been getting about 25% with the first-team and Moreno has been sprinkled in here and there with the top unit. The team is not bringing Ball along slowly but they're not going to merely hand him the starting job. Watch this battle in training camp. Hillman has added 15 pounds of muscle and Manning, John Fox, and Adam Gase have all commented on his improved pass blocking this offseason. People expect Ball to win the starting job eventually, but that may not be week one of the regular season.

DEN - Wes Welker to get revenge in Week 12 - Sun Jun 16, 11:38 PM

Denver Broncos WR Wes Welker will get a crack at his former team, the New England Patriots, in Week 12. New England Patriots owner Robert Kraft told reporters his club offered Welker more money than Denver, but he left anyway.

Footballguys view: Welker is all about winning a championship. He'll have a good chance to do that with the Broncos in 2013. Welker should be the second target in the Broncos passing game behind Demaryius Thomas. Welker may not catch 110 passes this year but if he caught 90 passes we wouldn't be surprised.

DEN - Believed Willis McGahee was not healthy - Sun Jun 16, 11:38 PM

Denver Broncos head coach Mike Fox said the reason RB Willis McGahee was released had nothing to do with the veteran's decision to skip voluntary organized team activities (OTAs), but the team feels he was not healthy, according to sources. He saw only limited carries during the team's mandatory minicamp, and the team has plenty of depth with RBs Ronnie Hillman, Knowshon Moreno and rookie Montee Ball in the mix.

Footballguys view: McGahee said that he was feeling great and was healthy when he arrived at Dove Valley for minicamp. "I'm healthy, I'm cleared. Everything is good. No problems. I can run. I've been working out when I was in Miami. I've dropped down (weight). No complaints."

DEN - Offensive backfield notes - Sun Jun 16, 12:54 AM

The Denver Broncos could start RB Ronnie Hillman for Week 1, but he is expected to eventually give way to rookie RB Montee Ball, perhaps by the end of September. Veteran RB Knowshon Moreno likely will be used often, as he is the best pass-protecting running back on the team.

Footballguys view: This is a feeling that has been going around Dove Valley for some time. Hillman is getting a majority of the first-team snaps this offseason. Ball was selected to be the primary back but the team won't simply hand him the starting job. We'll see if Ball can win the job over Hillman in training camp. Hillman could be their primary change of pace back behind Ball if he doesn't win the starting job.

DEN - Moreno pushing for more playing time - Sat Jun 15, 06:57 PM

Denver Broncos RB Knowshon Moreno is getting healthier and getting a small handful of first-team reps this offseason. Moreno knows that he may be behind Ronnie Hillman and rookie Montee Ball (Wisconsin) but he's pushing for more playing time after the release of Willis McGahee. "It's not an opportunity now that he's gone because I'm trying to push for more time even if he was here. When he's not here I still have six other guys to compete with. So it's just a matter of his experience I was competing with."

Footballguys view: Moreno may be third on the depth chart right now and the team is bringing him back slowly as he recovers from the knee injury he suffered in the playoff game against the Ravens. He proved last year that he could be a capable starter if called upon. We'll see Ball and Hillman compete for the starting job in training camp. Moreno gives the team veteran insurance in case the two younger backs don't work out or get hurt.

DEN - Hillman wants to start - Sat Jun 15, 06:55 PM

Denver Broncos second-year RB Ronnie Hillman has been working as the primary back with the first-team this offseason. Some see him as only a change of pace back but Hillman believes otherwise. "I'm trying to push to be the starting running back---I want to be come Sept. 5. If what I produce on the field this camp coming up allows me to be then I'll be happy but that is the goal." Hillman said.

Footballguys view: Hillman has been getting a majority (around 75%) of the first-team reps this offseason. He's added 15 pounds of muscle this offseason after falling to below 180 pounds at the end of last year. Hillman has been a standout player at OTAs and many Broncos reporters have commented on him being faster and more explosive this year. We'll see if he can hold onto the starting job when training camp rolls around. Even if Hillman is the starter this team will still employ a RBBC which should also feature rookie Montee Ball (Wisconsin).

DEN - Montee Ball comfortable with the playbook - Sat Jun 15, 06:51 PM

Denver Broncos second-round pick RB Montee Ball (Wisconsin) feels comfortable in his playbook so far. "I feel really good, actually. I think I showed a lot of progress, in the OTAs, practices, and the rookie minicamp all put together. I showed a lot of progress and I'm extremely comfortable with the playbook right now." Ball said.

Footballguys view: Great news for the Broncos here. According to Peyton Manning the team is not going to bring Ball along slowly. He's currently getting some first-team reps (about 25%) behind second-year back Ronnie Hillman. However, most expect him to win the starting job by the start of the regular season. Even if Ball is the starter new OC Adam Gase has commented that the team will use a RBBC. Ball's ADP is climbing (RB22) but fantasy owners need to recognize it could get too high if it climbs much further. John Fox's history with rookie RBs is not kind.

DEN - John Fox showing faith in RBs - Sat Jun 15, 06:44 PM

Denver Broncos head coach John Fox is showing faith in the RBs left on the roster after the release of veteran RB Willis McGahee. "I think anytime you pick your team, or begin to pick your team, you're showing faith in those people. I thought [RB] Ronnie [Hillman] came on very well last year. I've been impressed by [RB] Montee Ball---not that he's there yet by any stretch. And then we've got [RB] Knowshon [Moreno], who is also coming off of an injury, who we feel pretty good about."

Footballguys view: The team would not have released McGahee if they didn't feel comfortable about the players they have in place. Most expect Ball to win the starting job by the start of the regular season. Hillman could be a featured player in their RBBC as the 'Lightning' to Ball's 'Thunder.' Moreno gives the team veteran insurance in case of struggles or injury.

DEN - Julius Thomas worked with starters - Sat Jun 15, 11:20 AM

Denver Broncos TE Julius Thomas received some reps with the first-team offense during offseason workouts.

Footballguys view: Our very own Cecil Lammey has been out at Dove Valley for every offseason workout this year. He's noted that Thomas makes for an incredible downfield target because of his size and speed down the seam. The Broncos will work Thomas into the rotation at TE but he's currently third on the depth chart behind Jacob Tamme and Joel Dreesen.

DEN - David Bruton saw time with starters - Sat Jun 15, 11:17 AM

Denver Broncos FS David Bruton received some reps with the first-team defense during offseason workouts. Bruton has been mostly a special teams players in his first four years with the team.

Footballguys view: The team is giving Bruton the opportunity to prove himself with a greater role. We'll see if he can win the starting job over Mike Adams. New acquisition Quentin Jammer will also compete for that job in training camp.

DEN - Kayvon Webster contract update - Fri Jun 14, 06:58 PM

Updating a previous report, Denver Broncos CB Kayvon Webster signed a four-year deal worth $2.735 million. The deal includes a $539,800 signing bonus.

DEN - Not looking to re-sign Willis McGahee - Thu Jun 13, 03:56 PM

Free-agent RB Willis McGahee (Broncos) said the Denver Broncos did not ask him to re-sign with them at a lower salary.

Footballguys view: The Broncos are moving on with a younger group of RBs. Rookie Montee Ball (Wisconsin) is not being brought along slowly and will be given every opportunity to win the starting job. He's currently getting a small slice (about 25%) of first-team reps behind second-year back Ronnie Hillman. We'll see if Ball can seize the starting job in training camp.

DEN - Willis McGahee expected release - Thu Jun 13, 03:55 PM

Free-agent RB Willis McGahee (Broncos) said he expected to be released by the Denver Broncos because they are going younger at the position.

Footballguys view: The first day McGahee showed up at Broncos minicamp (Tuesday) he said 'I ain't gonna be here forever.' The team chose to move on from the veteran back in order to get more reps for Ronnie Hillman and rookie Montee Ball (Wisconsin).

DEN - Sign Kayvon Webster - Thu Jun 13, 03:42 PM

The Denver Broncos signed CB Kayvon Webster (South Florida) Thursday, June 13. Terms of the contract were not disclosed.

Footballguys view: Webster was their third-round pick in the 2013 NFL draft. He's got the length and recovery speed to hang with receivers down the field. Webster isn't afraid of run support and is a clean tackler in the open field. He'll work as a subpackage player this season but could move into the starting lineup as soon as 2014.

DEN - Montee Ball signs - Thu Jun 13, 03:42 PM

The Denver Broncos signed RB Montee Ball (Wisconsin) nThursday, June 13. Terms of the contract were not disclosed.

Footballguys view: Ball is set to take over as the Broncos lead back in 2013. When that exactly happens is anybody's guess right now. Ball has been working behind Ronnie Hillman in Broncos minicamp and is getting about 1/4 of the first-team reps. We'll see if Ball can pass Hillman on the depth chart during training camp.

DEN - Willis McGahee released - Thu Jun 13, 10:45 AM

The Denver Broncos released RB Willis McGahee.

Footballguys view: This isn't really a surprise since the team drafted Montee Ball (Wisconsin) in the second-round of the 2013 NFL draft. The team will move forward with Ball and second-year back Ronnie Hillman as their primary backs. McGahee isn't the same player he used to be but should be able to find a spot around training camp. Teams like the Chargers or Cowboys could show interest in the veteran back.

DEN - Knowshon Moreno running routes - Tue Jun 11, 02:39 PM

Denver Broncos RB Knowshon Moreno (knee) was running routes during practice Tuesday, June 11. Moreno was previously only taking part in pass protection drills last week after having knee surgery early in the offseason.

Footballguys view: Broncos head coach John Fox said earlier this offseason that Moreno was going to be brought along slowly as he comes back from the knee injury he suffered in the playoffs against Baltimore last year. The Denver Post speculates that Moreno and Willis McGahee are in a competition for one spot on the depth chart. At this point Moreno could be considered the favorite because he's a better receiver and better in pass protection than McGahee.

DEN - Willis McGahee arrives - Tue Jun 11, 01:10 PM

Denver Broncos RB Willis McGahee is present for the team's minicamp on Tuesday, June 11.

Footballguys view: McGahee is at the facility for the first time this offseason. Many think his roster spot is in danger after the team added Montee Ball (Wisconsin) in the second-round of the 2013 NFL draft. He is competing for a spot on the depth chart with Knowshon Moreno and is not a lock to make the team.

DEN - Contact Ryan Clady's agent - Mon Jun 10, 06:44 PM

The Denver Broncos contacted the agent for franchise free-agent OT Ryan Clady Monday, June 10, to talk about a possible contract. The two sides have not talked since last July.

DEN - No contract talks with Ryan Clady - Mon Jun 10, 03:08 PM

The Denver Broncos have not had any contract talks with franchise free-agent OT Ryan Clady (shoulder) at this point because they want to see how his shoulder recovers.

Footballguys view: If Clady can prove his durability this season then he's set to earn a big money deal after the season. The Broncos did offer Clady a five-year $50MM deal in 2012 but he turned them down. That gamble got him slapped with the franchise tag this offseason. We'll learn if that gamble pays off for the veteran tackle in the future.

DEN - Ryan Clady will not be at minicamp - Mon Jun 10, 03:01 PM

Denver Broncos franchise free-agent OT Ryan Clady said he will not attend the team's minicamp this week but likely will report for training camp.

Footballguys view: No surprise here. Clady hasn't signed his franchise tender and essentially isn't under contract. The two sides have until July 15th to work out a new long-term deal.

DEN - Derek Wolfe has added weight - Fri Jun 7, 01:39 AM

Denver Broncos DE Derek Wolfe has added weight in the offseason and earned the praise of some of his teammates. He should earn a bigger share of defensive snaps this year.

Footballguys view: Wolfe played about 75% of his snaps last year at DT and finished the season with six sacks. With a bigger role then he could push for double digit sacks in 2013.

DEN - Jacob Tamme's stats expected to dip - Wed Jun 5, 01:19 PM

Denver Broncos TE Jacob Tamme doesn't figure to have as many passes thrown his way as last year, chiefly because of WR Wes Welker's arrival.

Footballguys view: The Broncos used 12 personnel (2TE) as their base offensive set last year. This season they will use 11 personnel (3WR) as the base formation and it will limit the number of targets for the TEs.

DEN - Knowshon Moreno working out - Tue Jun 4, 12:18 PM

Denver Broncos RB Knowshon Moreno (knee) was back at organized team activities Monday, June 3, and he took part in some pass-protection drills. Moreno underwent an operation in the offseason in which stem cells were taken from the bone marrow in his pelvis and injected into his right knee. 'It was nothing really too serious,' said Moreno, who tore his right ACL in 2011. 'This time it was just a cleanup pretty much. And it feels pretty good.'

Footballguys view: Moreno stayed in to pass protect but didn't get any carries or run any routes out of the backfield. It was the first time this offseason that Moreno has gotten work in team drills. The team is taking it easy with the veteran RB as he comes back from yet another injury. Moreno could be the team's RB3 behind Montee Ball and Ronnie Hillman.

DEN - Willis McGahee expected to show up next week - Tue Jun 4, 12:16 PM

Denver Broncos RB Willis McGahee (knee) is expected to attend the team's mandatory minicamp next week. McGahee has been absent from organized team activities not due to his contract but because he's dealing with personal matters. McGahee has been taking part in offseason conditioning after tearing a ligament in his right knee in November of last season.

Footballguys view: McGahee could be on the roster bubble for the Broncos. The team would like Montee Ball and Ronnie Hillman to be their 1-2 punch at the RB position. The Denver Post has speculated that McGahee and Knowshon Moreno are competing for one spot on the roster.

DEN - Montee Ball settling in - Tue Jun 4, 12:07 PM

Denver Broncos RB Montee Ball said his rookie 'jitters are gone' during organized team activities without RB Willis McGahee (knee) participating in the offseason workouts. RB Ronnie Hillman has been practicing with the starters while Ball is getting one-on-one tutoring from QB Peyton Manning after practices. 'We're going to count on him in a big way this year,' Manning said. 'He's a rookie but Coach (John) Fox is not going to bring him along slowly.'

Footballguys view: Another important note on Ball for fantasy owners here. The Broncos would like the rookie to be the lead back in their RBBC in 2013. Ball is getting a little work with the first team in OTAs behind Ronnie Hillman. We'll see if he can win the starting job in training camp. Ball's current ADP (RB22) is too high right now in our opinion.

DEN - Ronnie Hillman regains weight - Tue Jun 4, 10:41 AM

Denver Broncos RB Ronnie Hillman said he dropped to 180 pounds last season and is back up to 195 pounds.

Footballguys view: Earlier reports say Hillman weighed less than 180 pounds when he ran 22 times for 83 yards against the Ravens in the playoffs. Hillman has been running with the first-team during Broncos OTAs and may have a bigger role in 2013 than some think. The team wants rookie Montee Ball (Wisconsin) and Hillman to be their 1-2 punch this season. We'll see if that can materialize in training camp. Denver Broncos rookie WR Tavarres King (Georgia) had an impressive day of practice at Broncos minicamp on Monday. King is showing off his speed and eats up the cushion a defensive back gives him quickly.

Footballguys view: King was a solid pick by the Broncos in the fifth-round of the 2013 NFL draft. Some consider him a lock to make the roster because his speed can take the top off the defense in a hurry. King could be in for an even bigger role in 2014 if the Broncos lose WR Eric Decker in free agency after this season. Dynasty owners need to know King's name and realize his opportunity.

Denver Broncos third-year TE Julius Thomas continues to impress during the team's OTAs. Thomas is finally healthy and getting an opportunity to run with the first-team now that Joel Dreesen had a minor knee scope last week.

Footballguys view: A note for dynasty owners here. We'll see if Thomas has impressed enough to earn playing time when Dreesen is back for training camp. It's a make or break year for the former Portland State basketball star. He's got upside but may find it difficult to get onto the field in the team's new 11 personnel (3WR) base offense.

Footballguys view: Moreno and Willis McGahee are competing for one spot on the Broncos roster. Rookie Montee Ball and second-year RB Ronnie Hillman are expected to be the team's top two RBs in 2013. Footballguys view: McGahee may in fact be on the roster bubble. The team selected Montee Ball (Wisconsin) in the second-round of the 2013 NFL draft to be their lead back. That could bump McGahee off the roster. The Broncos would save $2MM against their cap if they let McGahee go.

DEN - Being cautious with Moreno - Thu May 30, 07:46 PM

"We're going to be very cautious. When the doctors give him the full-go, go-ahead, he'll be doing everything."

Footballguys view: The Broncos backfield is a bit of a mess right now. Rookie Montee Ball (Wisconsin) may be the starter with second-year RB Ronnie Hillman serving as the primary change of pace back. Moreno could make the final roster but he may be on the roster bubble. We'll see what the team decides to do with both Moreno and Willis McGahee. DEN - Manning thinks his arm is stronger - Thu May 30, 07:43 PM

Denver Broncos QB Peyton Manning thinks his arm is stronger this offseason. "I think that I've made some progress definitely since last year at this time. I think also some since last season. I think oftentimes when you know more about the receiver that you're throwing to, you have more repetitions with each guy, I think that usually allows for hopefully more accuracy and more confident throws, if you will. The more repetitions I can get with [WR] Eric [Decker], D.T. (WR Demaryius Thomas), [WR Andre] Caldwell, [RB] Ronnie Hillman, [TE Jacob] Tamme, [WR Wes] Welker, the better that is for everybody, I think."

Footballguys view: More good news about Manning's arm strength here. The improved weapons around him should only help him in 2013. The team is using an up tempo offense under new OC Adam Gase. That pace, plus an improved ground game could help Manning perform even better than he did last year. Fantasy owners have taken note. DEN - Won't bring Montee Ball along slowly - Thu May 30, 07:40 PM

Denver Broncos QB Peyton Manning said the team is expecting big things from rookie RB Montee Ball this season. "Coach [John] Fox is not going to bring him along slowly. We are going to put him in there and make him a contributor this year. So, the more repetitions we can get out here talking football, talking scenarios, I think the more comfortable he'll be once the regular season gets here."

Footballguys view: An important note for fantasy owners here. Ball is the back the team wants to be the starter but they're not going to hand him the starting job. DEN - Julius Thomas finally healthy - Thu May 30, 07:35 PM

Denver Broncos third-year TE Julius Thomas says he's finally healthy after the ankle surgery that cost him most of the 2012 season. "I'm actually feeling great. It's been a good offseason for me. I'm definitely feeling how I need to be feeling to go out there and play at a high level." Thomas continued, "I'm very excited to have these OTAs and make up for some time I missed."

Footballguys view: Thomas looked good on the practice field today, hauling in a 50-yard TD catch from QB Peyton Manning. He's in a make or break season but is a favorite of the coaching staff and the most athletically gifted TE on the roster.

DEN - Quentin Jammer provides flexibility - Thu May 30, 05:54 PM

Denver Broncos head coach John Fox said CB Quentin Jammer will be used at safety at times in the team's defensive scheme. Jammer started at least four games in all 11 of his years with the San Diego Chargers at cornerback, but the Broncos see him as a situational player that could line up at both cornerback and safety.

DEN - Joel Dreessen had offseason surgery - Thu May 30, 05:48 PM

Denver Broncos TE Joel Dreessen (knee) underwent offseason arthroscopic surgery on his knee and will miss the rest of the team's offseason workouts, including the mandatory minicamp in June. TE Julius Thomas will see increased repetitions in the absence of Dreessen.

Footballguys view: Dreesen should be ready for the start of training camp. The procedure was considered minor and shouldn't hold him back in August. In the meantime Julius Thomas was making big plays with the Broncos first-team at minicamp.

DEN - Working on faster offense - Thu May 30, 02:44 PM

The Denver Broncos have been working on a faster-paced offense during organized team activities to try to take advantage of defenses. 'I think it could be a huge advantage for us. And, it's a lot of fun. I think we have a lot of smart guys on our side of the ball and on the offensive line. It is a challenge for us, but at the same time, it's fun for us to be able to take on that challenge,' OG Zane Beadles said.

Footballguys view: The up tempo offense should help the numbers for the Broncos offense in 2013. More Peyton Manning is nothing but a good thing. They'll use 11 personnel (3WR) as their base formation and put a lot of pressure on their opponents.
