Updating a previous report, Ian Rapoport, of the Boston Herald, reports New England Patriots WR David Patten signed a one-year and will make $855,000 if he makes the team.
NE - Patten signed -
Patriots.com reports the New England Patriots have signed unrestricted free-agent WR David Patten (Browns). Terms of the contract were not disclosed.
Footballguys view: Patten, a 12-year veteran, played with New England during their Super Bowl run of 2001-2004. He was out of football in 2009 after being cut by the Cleveland Browns before the start of the season.
IND - Worked out three receivers Tuesday -
Paul Kuharsky, of ESPN.com, reports the Indianapolis Colts worked out unrestricted free-agent WRs D.J. Hackett (Redskins), David Patten (Browns) and Chad Jackson (Broncos) Tuesday, Sept. 15, according to ESPN's Adam Schefter.
Footballguys view: The Colts are doing their due diligence as they try to find some options while Anthony Gonzalez is out with injury.
CLE - Not ruling out a return of Patten -
George M. Thomas, of The Beacon Journal, reports Cleveland Browns head coach Eric Mangini isn't ruling out bringing back free-agent WR David Patten, who was released over the weekend.
Footballguys view: Patten was productive two seasons ago in New Orleans, but he didn't do much for the Saints last year, and he didn't stand out in training camp for the Browns this year.
CLE - Announce roster moves -
ClevelandBrowns.com reports the Cleveland Browns have waived FB Charles Ali, CB Brandon Anderson, QB Richard Bartel, CB Tra Battle, OL Branndon Braxton, LB Titus Brown, OL Dustin Fry, DL Adam Hoppel, WR Paul Hubbard, RB Chris Jennings, WR Lance Leggett, OG Pat Murray, WR Jordan Norwood, OL Kurt Quarterman, DE Brian Schaefering, OG Isaac Sowells and DE Santonio Thomas. The Browns have also terminated the contract of SS Hamza Abdullah, RB Noah Herron, CB Corey Ivy, WR David Patten and TE Aaron Walker.
Footballguys view: Richard Bartel, once thought of as the next Tony Romo in Dallas, could be added to the practice squad if he clears waivers. Of all the wide receivers released by the Browns, we like the upside of rookie Jordan Norwood. He has good body control, football intelligence, and is a fairly savvy route runner. The Browns would be wise to add him to their practice squad.
CLE - Too little too late for Patten? -
Steve Doerschuk, from CantonRep.com, notes David Patten is on the comeback trail after missing all three preseason games. He looked crisp on his routes and catches. At one point, he put a nice move on swift safety Mike Adams and broke into the clear.
Footballguys view: Braylon Edwards, Josh Cribbs, Brian Robiskie, and Mohamed Massaquoi are locks to make the team. Veteran Mike Furrey has played well and moved into the slot position, thus making Patten expendable. We wouldn't be surprised if the Browns release Patten sometime this week.
CLE - Patten working with trainer Thursday -
CBSSports.com reports Cleveland Browns WR David Patten is working with a trainer during the team's practice Thursday, Aug. 20.
CLE - Five sit out Wednesday -

CLE - Patten misses some practice time Friday -
George M. Thomas, of The Akron Beacon Journal, reports Cleveland Browns WR David Patten (undisclosed) spent a portion of practice Friday, Aug. 7, riding an exercise bike. In other injury news, FB Charles Ali (undisclosed) did not practice at all. OL Rex Hadnot (leg) is still undergoing tests to determine the severity of an injury to his left leg.
CLE - Patten and Furrey near the top of the preliminary depth chart? -
Zac Jackson, of ClevelandBrowns.com, reports Cleveland Browns WRs David Patten and Mike Furrey will be near the front of the line for wide receiver drills when training camp opens. However, it will be up to them to stay there by holding off the younger wide receivers behind them looking for playing time.
Footballguys view: Patten and Furrey may be near the top of the depth chart - for now, but by the time training camp is over they could be near the bottom (or off) of the list. The Browns have several young receivers that could get into the lineup before this veteran duo. We anticipate rookie WR Brian Robiskie being named the starter opposite of Braylon Edwards.
CLE - Patten helping younger receivers -
Steve Doerschuk, of the Canton Repository, reports Cleveland Browns WR David Patten has been working with the younger receivers during practice to help them improve.
Footballguys view: The team looks at Patten as an extra receivers coach. The Browns do have some potential at WR behind Braylon Edwards, Brian Robiskie, and Josh Cribbs. Rookies Mohamed Massoquoi and Jordan Norwood are both athletic and crisp route runners. Second year pros Paul Hubbard and Lance Leggett are big targets that want to prove they can hang in the NFL. It's good to see Patten reaching out to younger players. He may have found his calling after his playing days are through.
