CHI - Josh McCown agrees to terms -
The Chicago Bears have agreed to terms with free-agent QB Josh McCown (Bears) on a one-year deal. Financial terms were not disclosed.
CHI - Week 17 Inactives -
The Chicago Bears have declared RB Armando Allen, LB Blake Costanzo, LB Brian Urlacher, FS Chris Conte, OT Cory Brandon, QB Josh McCown, DL Nate Collins inactive for Week 17.
Footballguys view: The Bears should be all out to try to get a playoff spot if the Packers can knock off the Vikings. Brandon Marshall and Matt Forte should be on a lot of week 17 Super Bowl winners.
CHI - Week 16 Inactives -
The Chicago Bears have declared LB Blake Costanzo, LB Brian Urlacher, DL Cheta Ozougwu, WR Dane Sanzenbacher, DL Henry Melton, OT Jonathan Scott, QB Josh McCown inactive for Week 16.
CHI - Week 15 Inactives -
The Chicago Bears have declared LB Brian Urlacher, WR Earl Bennett, LB Geno Hayes, DL Henry Melton, QB Josh McCown, DL Shea McClellin, CB Tim Jennings inactive for Week 15.
Footballguys view: The Bears are without starters at every level of their defense, so Aaron Rodgers job is a little easier today.
CHI - Week 14 Inactives -
The Chicago Bears have declared LB Brian Urlacher, OG Chris Spencer, WR Dane Sanzenbacher, WR Earl Bennett, QB Josh McCown, DL Stephen Paea, CB Tim Jennings inactive for Week 14.
Footballguys view: Alshon Jeffery is back for the Bears and should be a solid secondary target for Jay Cutler today against the Vikings.
CHI - Week 13 Inactives -
The Chicago Bears have declared WR Alshon Jeffery, DL Cheta Ozougwu, OG Chris Spencer, CB D.J. Moore, WR Devin Hester, QB Josh McCown, DL Matt Toeaina inactive for Week 13.
Footballguys view: Matt Forte is active and starting as expected. Earl Bennett gets the start with Hester out, but Jay Cutler is likely to lean on Brandon Marshall in the passing game.
CHI - Week 12 Inactives -
The Chicago Bears have declared WR Alshon Jeffery, DL Amobi Okoye, DL Cheta Ozougwu, WR Dane Sanzenbacher, OT James Brown, QB Josh McCown, DL Matt Toeaina inactive for Week 12.
Footballguys view: Jay Cutler is active and he will start in the NFC North showdown. He's still not a good fantasy play behind that offensive line.
CHI - Josh McCown to sign -
The Chicago Bears are expected to finalize a deal to re-sign QB Josh McCown Tuesday, Nov. 13, according to a league source.
Footballguys view: A sign that Cutler's concussion could keep him out for awhile. McCown knows the offense and gives them veteran depth behind Jason Campbell.
CHI - Matt Blanchard likely not ready -
The Chicago Bears likely do not feel comfortable at this point asking QB Matt Blanchard, who is on the team's practice squad, to fill the role of backup quarterback if QB Jay Cutler (concussion) misses time. As a result, the team is expected to re-sign free-agent QB Josh McCown.
CHI - Josh McCown update -
Updating a previous item, free-agent QB Josh McCown (Bears) is flying to Chicago Monday, Nov. 12, and is expected to re-sign with the Bears following the injury to QB Jay Cutler (concussion) in Week 10.
CHI - Expected to re-sign Josh McCown -
The Chicago Bears are expected to re-sign QB Josh McCown.
NYG - Working out three QBs -
The New York Giants are working out free-agent QBs Josh McCown (Bears), Stephen McGee (Cowboys) and Brian Hoyer (Patriots) Friday, Sept. 7.
CHI - Announce final roster cuts -
The Chicago Bears have released LB Xavier Adibi, RB Armando Allen, DL Chauncey Davis, CB Isaiah Frey, OT A.J. Greene, OG Ricky Henry, FS Mark LeGree, QB Josh McCown, CB Greg McCoy, DL Jordan Miller, LB Aston Whiteside, CB Jonathan Wilhite and LB Jabara Williams Friday, Aug. 31.
Footballguys view: Lorenzo Booker will be the number three running back for the Bears this year with Allen and Kahlil Bell no longer on the team.
CHI - Alshon Jeffery works out with Josh McCown -
Chicago Bears WR Alshon Jeffery worked out with QB Josh McCown last weekend in South Carolina. Jeffery ran routes and caught passes from McCown during the workout.
Footballguys view: Jeffery is intent on proving himself on the pro level this year. He'll make a perfect No.2 WR opposite Brandon Marshall because of his size, deceptive speed, and deep ball tracking ability.
CHI - Josh McCown re-signed -
The Chicago Bears have re-signed free-agent QB Josh McCown to a one-year deal. Financial terms were not disclosed.
Footballguys view: McCown will serve as the third-string QB behind Jay Cutler and Jason Campbell. He looked better than Caleb Hanie did last year when called upon to play for the Bears.
CHI - Josh McCown could return as No. 3 QB -
The Chicago Bears may consider re-signing impending free-agent QB Josh McCown to be the their No. 3 quarterback which would allow them to look for a backup quarterback.
Footballguys view: McCown would be a nice fit as their third-string QB. He would compete with second-year QB Nathan Enderle for the spot.
CHI - To look at QBs for backup role -
Chicago Bears head coach Lovie Smith indicated the team will pursue a backup quarterback during the offseason. QB Nathan Enderle is the only other quarterback under contract besides starter QB Jay Cutler. 'We have a lot of options out there. I think this is an attractive place for a quarterback,' Smith said. 'We're going to look at all people. And I'm talking about (QB Caleb Hanie), (QB Josh McCown) and free agent quarterbacks out there. I just feel like we'll be able to strengthen that position more than we were this past year.'
Footballguys view: Enderle is a raw QB who is nowhere near seeing the field. The Bears could look at a free agent QB like Kyle Orton to upgrade their backup position.
CHI - Josh McCown might be part of team's future plans -
Chicago Bears QB Josh McCown has done enough since signing a one-year contract last week to be part of the team's offseason conversation. The team gained a season-high 441 yards in Week 16 against the Green Bay Packers. 'I think everything you do, you have to look at the performance and the performance Josh put in (Sunday night) was impressive,' head coach Lovie Smith said. 'That's why we can get so much done this week. We want to see him have an opportunity to come back and play again this coming week. You normally can find a spot for a player that played the way he played (Sunday night).'
Footballguys view: In other words, the team knows that Caleb Hanie is gone, so they're in the market for a backup QB.
CHI - Jay Cutler not ruled out for Week 17 -
Chicago Bears head coach Lovie Smith did not rule out QB Jay Cutler (thumb) for the Week 17 game against the Minnesota Vikings, although he said Monday, Dec. 26, that he is looking forward to seeing QB Josh McCown Sunday, Jan. 1.
CHI - Josh McCown throws for 242 yards, TD -
Chicago Bears QB Josh McCown completed 19 of 28 passes for 242 yards, one touchdowns and two interceptions in the Week 16 game against the Green Bay Packers. McCown also racked up 38 yards on eight rushes, and he made a nice hustling play to recover a fumble by RB Kahlil Bell in the second half.
Footballguys view: McCown wasn't worse than Caleb Hanie, in fact he was even better than Hanie for the most part. It still wasn't enough to save the Bears season, but perhaps McCown has extended his career as a backup QB.
CHI - Josh McCown might forge future with team -
Chicago Bears QB Josh McCown, named the Week 16 starter Wednesday, Dec. 21, might have a chance to get offered a contract for 2012 if he shows well in the final two games. That would bring him into the offseason program and have him go to training camp with the team in July. 'If I keep looking back and saying, 'I only got here six weeks ago,' then it becomes an excuse (and) I think you leave an area for you not to play well because you're leaving something to fall back on,' McCown said.
Footballguys view: The Bears clearly won't go forward with Caleb Hanie at backup QB, as he apparently used up all of his good football in last year's NFC Title game.
CHI - Josh McCown named starter -
Chicago Bears QB Josh McCown has been named the starting quarterback for Week 16.
Footballguys view: Not a surprise here. Caleb Hanie has played terribly over the last few weeks and was bound to be replaced as the starter. McCown is a savvy veteran but we're not recommending him as a fantasy addition in championship week.
CHI - Josh McCown could start -
Chicago Bears QB Josh McCown will be given the opportunity to win the starting job for the team's Week 16 game against the Green Bay Packers, according to multiple sources.
Footballguys view: McCown may win the job over Caleb Hanie if he can impress the coaching staff in practice. Hanie has played terribly over the last four games and has nine interceptions during that time.
CHI - Mum on QB plans -
Chicago Bears head coach Lovie Smith wasn't prepared to disclose plans to make a change at quarterback following Week 15. 'Open?' Smith asked about the quarterback position. 'I mean, it's right after the game and we're disappointed in our performance today in the quarterback position. But I can't tell you any more than that.' QBs Caleb Hanie and Josh McCown combined to throw four interceptions - two returned for touchdowns - in Week 15.
CHI - Josh McCown moves up depth chart -
Chicago Bears QB Josh McCown did not play in Week 14 against the Denver Broncos, but he dressed the primary back to QB Caleb Hanie, surpassing QB Nathan Enderle on the depth chart.
CHI - To discuss Donovan McNabb -
After the struggles of Chicago Bears QB Caleb Hanie in Week 13 and QB Josh McCown not deemed ready enough after more than a week of orientation with the offense, team management will be in conversations Monday, Dec. 5, about free-agent QB Donovan McNabb (Vikings), according to sources. Conversations do not equate to 'negotiations' or serious talks, however.
Footballguys view: McCown may not be ready yet, but what makes the team think McNabb would get up to speed quickly?
CHI - Week 13 Inactives -
The Chicago Bears have declared TE Andre P. Smith, DL Anthony Adams, CB D.J. Moore, LB Jabara Williams, QB Jay Cutler, QB Josh McCown, OG Ricky Henry inactive for Week 13.
CHI - Week 12 Inactives -
The Chicago Bears have declared TE Andre P. Smith, DL Anthony Adams, CB D.J. Moore, LB Jabara Williams, QB Jay Cutler, QB Josh McCown, OG Ricky Henry inactive for Week 12.
CHI - Josh McCown agrees to terms -
The Chicago Bears have agreed to terms with free-agent QB Josh McCown (49ers) on a one-year deal. Financial terms were not disclosed.
Footballguys view: The Bears needed another veteran QB as they only have rookie Nathan Enderle behind starter Caleb Hanie.
CHI - Will pursue Kyle Orton -
The Chicago Bears plan on putting in a waiver claim on free-agent QB Kyle Orton (Broncos), who was waived by the Denver Broncos Tuesday, Nov. 22, according to sources close to the situation. The team is also interested in free-agent QB Josh McCown (49ers).
Footballguys view: The Bears only have rookie Nathan Enderle behind Caleb Hanie on the depth chart. Expect Chicago to add a veteran through waivers (Orton) or as a street free agent (McCown).
CHI - Kyle Orton would like to return -
Free-agent QB Kyle Orton (Broncos), who was waived by the Denver Broncos Tuesday, Nov. 22, would like a chance to return to the Chicago Bears after QB Jay Cutler (thumb) broke his thumb in Week 11. Orton and his agent, David Dunn, initiated talks for the Broncos to release him after they found out that Cutler may miss the rest of the season. The Bears and/or the Kansas City Chiefs will put in waiver claims on Orton. The Chiefs have first priority because they have an inferior record. The Bears could turn to free-agent QBs Josh McCown (49ers) or J.T. O'Sullivan (Raiders) if they lose out on Orton. There are indications that Bears offensive coordinator Mike Martz isn't very comfortable with QB Caleb Hanie for the rest of the season.
Footballguys view: Jay Glazer is reporting that both Kansas City and Chicago might put in a claim on Orton. He might not be an upgrade from Hanie since he doesn't know the Martz offense. He would be an upgrade from Tyler Palko.
OAK - Trio of veteran QBs not scheduled for workouts yet -
Free-agent QBs Trent Edwards (Raiders), David Garrard (Jaguars) and Josh McCown (49ers) have each not yet been scheduled for workouts with the Oakland Raiders, although they have been contacted by the team.
OAK - Have not scheduled workouts with two QBs -
The Oakland Raiders have not scheduled workouts with free-agent QBs Josh McCown (49ers) and Trent Edwards (Raiders) at this point.
Footballguys view: Edwards is the favorite here because of his time spent with the team in the past, but McCown might have a better skillset for what the Raiders ask of their QBs.
OAK - Contact Josh McCown -
The Oakland Raiders have contacted free-agent QB Josh McCown (49ers) following the injury to QB Jason Campbell (collarbone) in Week 6.
SF - Josh McCown released -
The San Francisco 49ers have released QB Josh McCown.
Footballguys view: The 49ers will move forward with Alex Smith as their starter with rookie Colin Kaepernick serving as his primary backup. McCown's days in the NFL are likely over.
SF - More on Josh McCown -
Updating a previous item, the San Francisco 49ers locked up QB Josh McCown to a one-year worth the league minimum of $810,000. He is expected to compete with QB Colin Kaepernick for the backup job behind QB Alex Smith.
SF - Josh McCown practices -

SF - Josh McCown signed -
The San Francisco 49ers have signed free-agent QB Josh McCown (Panthers). Terms of the contract were not disclosed.
Footballguys view: And with that the Daunte Culpepper watch is over in San Francisco.
DET - Team works out two quarterbacks -
The Detroit Lions worked out free-agent QBs Josh McCown (Panthers) and J.T. O'Sullivan (Chargers) Monday, Nov. 29, reports Dave Birkett, of the Detroit Free Press.
Footballguys view: There's a chance that Shaun Hill is out for the season with an injury to his throwing hand. Hill was subbing for an injured Matthew Stafford, who has a shoulder injury. There is no timetable set for Stafford's return, so the Lions may have to start Drew Stanton the rest of the year.
CHI - Not interested in Josh McCown -
The Chicago Bears are not interested in unrestricted free-agent QB Josh McCown (Panthers) is an option for their backup quarterback position, a source told ESPNChicago.com.
Footballguys view: The Bears are searching for another quarterback to bring in while backup Caleb Hanie deals with an injured shoulder. The injury is not considered to be serious, but the team needs another quarterback to go along with rookie Dan LeFevour.
- Josh McCown signs with Hartford Colonials -
The UFL's Hartford Colonials have signed free-agent QB Josh McCown (Panthers), reports Aaron Wilson, of NationalFootballPost.com.
CHI - Interested in Josh McCown? -
The Chicago Bears could be interested in free-agent QB Josh McCown (Panthers), according to Mike Mulligan, of the Chicago Sun-Times.
Footballguys view: The Bears are looking for a veteran quarterback to compete for a roster spot behind Jay Cutler. They currently have Caleb Hanie as the main backup behind Cutler, with rookie Dan LeFevour as a developmental quarterback. Hanie is a scrappy quarterback who some thought should be the starter over Kyle Orton years ago. However, the Bears want more competition at the position so don't be surprised if they sign a veteran like McCown or Marc Bulger before the start of training camp.
CHI - Could target J. McCown as backup QB -
Brad Biggs, of the Chicago Tribune, reports the Chicago Bears could look to add another quarterback to their roster via free agency. One possibility is free-agent QB Josh McCown (Panthers).
CHI - May have interest in McCown -
Brad Biggs, of the Chicago Tribune, reports the Chicago Bears may have interest in acquiring free-agent QB Josh McCown (Panthers). McCown is familiar with offensive coordinator Mike Martz's system.
CAR - Josh McCown wants to re-sign -
Unrestricted free-agent QB Josh McCown is willing to re-sign with the Carolina Panthers at a bargain price, according to The Charlotte Observer's Charles Chandler. McCown has 31 career starts on his resume, and the Panthers have yet to sign a veteran backup for starting QB Matt Moore.
NO - Working out McCown, Ramsey -
Aaron Wilson, of the National Football Post, reports the New Orleans Saints are working out unrestricted free-agent QB Josh McCown (Panthers) and QB Patrick Ramsey (Lions) Thursday, April 8, according to a source.
Footballguys view: Mark Brunell is an unrestricted free agent so the Saints are looking at other veterans to back up Drew Brees. Chase Daniel was the third-string quarterback last year, but still needs to further develop his game and could not be counted on as the starter if Brees were to be injured.
CAR - McCown, Feeley unlikely to be re-signed -
Steve Reed, of CarolinaGrowl.com, reports Carolina Panthers QB Josh McCown and QB A.J. Feeley are both scheduled to be unrestricted free agents this offseason, but neither will likely be re-signed.
CAR - McCown placed on IR -
ESPN.com reports the Carolina Panthers have placed QB Josh McCown (knee, foot) on Injured Reserve, ending his 2009 season.
CAR - McCown injury update -
The Associated Press reports Carolina Panthers head coach John Fox said Monday, Sept. 14, that QB Josh McCown (foot, knee) has a sprained foot and knee. However, Fox would not say whether the team would add another quarterback.
Footballguys view: With this injury, and the play of Jake Delhomme the team must be exploring all options at this time. Rumors are already starting to fly that Jeff Garcia could be signed by the Panthers, but nothing is concrete at this point.
CAR - Quarterbacks struggle Week 1 -
The Associated Press reports the Carolina Panthers' three quarterbacks struggled during their Week 1 game against the Philadelphia Eagles. QB Jake Delhomme was 7-for-17 for 73 yards with four interceptions and a lost fumble. Delhomme was replaced by QB Josh McCown (knee), who went 1-for-6 for two yards before leaving with a knee injury. QB Matt Moore closed out the game for the Panthers by going 6-for-11 for 63 yards with an interception.
Footballguys view: Delhomme's performance was way too reminiscent of his meltdown against the Cardinals in the playoffs. The Panthers haven't taken a QB in the draft in a while, and they don't have a first-round pick next year. There's no relief in sight for the Panthers offense. DeAngelo Williams and Steve Smith owners should definitely be concerned.
