Know where player in your leagues are likely to be drafted with the Average Draft Position data. It's a must for serious drafters.
The same Average Draft Position but for Point Per Reception (PPR) scoring.
St. Louis Rams QB Sam Bradford (ankle) said his ankle is a non-issue at this time because he has not missed any practice or game repetitions. He said he does not expect to undergo surgery on the ankle.
Footballguys' view: Bradford is trying for a bounce back season in 2012. He'll need to stay healthy and have his young WR corps elevate their game to do that.
Pittsburgh Steelers RB Isaac Redman (groin, hip) is on the sideline but not in pads for the Steelers practice Thursday, Aug. 16. Redman left practice early Wednesday, Aug 15, after tweaking his hip.
Footballguys' view: The team needs to be very cautious moving forward here. Redman is in line to start for the Steelers while Rashard Mendenhall misses time with a knee injury.
Chicago Bears LB Brian Urlacher (knee) said that he won't feel healthy all year long after surgery. 'I'm sure it's not going to feel comfortable all season long. I don't think after the first game anyone's healthy,' Urlacher said Thursday, Aug. 16.
Footballguys' view: Urlacher is one of the toughest players in the game today. He's played through pain before and will find a way to manage the discomfort his knee gives him.
Dallas Cowboys WR Miles Austin (hamstring) ran sprints on the sidelines during practice Thursday, Aug. 16.
Footballguys' view: Austin is incredibly talented but durability is a huge concern for him. He could easily perform like a top flight WR1 for your fantasy team. However, his tendency to get injured makes us draft him more like a WR2 with upside.
Minnesota Vikings WR Percy Harvin is the only roster lock among the wide receivers currently on the roster. WRs Jarius Wright and Michael Jenkins appear to be good bets to make the finals roster.
Footballguys' view: Jerome Simpson will make the roster too but will miss three games at the beginning of the season due to a suspension.
Updating a previous report, Dallas Cowboys QB Tony Romo is expected to play a full quarter in the team's preseason game Saturday, Aug. 18, according to head coach Jason Garrett, which would be an increase from his first preseason game that saw him take 11 snaps.
Footballguys' view: That sounds about right. Most starters will only play one quarter (or so) in the second week of the preseason.
Washington Redskins head coach Mike Shanahan announced that RBs Alfred Morris, Tristan Davis and Evan Royster will all get playing time in the team's preseason game Saturday, Aug. 18, against the Chicago Bears.
Footballguys' view: The Shanahanigans continue. We really can't trust anyone in this backfield. Royster may be in line to begin the season as the starter but that could change multiple times during the year. There is fantasy value in the Redskins backfield because of the zone blocking system. Finding the right back to draft is a risky proposition.
New England Patriots head coach Bill Belichick said he still has confidence in QB Ryan Mallett even though Mallett has struggled at times during training camp. 'I think Ryan has improved significantly from last year,' said Belichick. 'I try not to get into those expectations, because who knows, guys progress at different rates. But I think what you're looking for is improvement. (The goal) is to see players go out there and perform, take instruction, coaching, film, individual technique work, whatever it is and the next time they get a chance to perform, it's better.'
Footballguys' view: Mallett is an interesting prospect to carry in dynasty leagues. He has a big arm and is not afraid to thrown into tight coverage. The Patriots are developing Mallett right now but his future is uncertain with the team. He could be traded to a QB needy team if the price was right.
Arizona Cardinals WR Michael Floyd remains behind WRs Andre Roberts and Early Doucet on the depth chart, and he has played with the reserves through two preseason games. The complementary role should help Floyd ease into the league, according to WR Larry Fitzgerald. 'Michael has a unique opportunity,' Fitzgerald said. 'He's not going to be asked to carry the full load. He'll have a nice complementary role until he gets comfortable in there and he can get featured more and more. He's confident in his ability, and that's what I really like about him.'
Footballguys' view: No surprise here. The team will. It rush Floyd into action before he's ready. We love his upside in dynasty leagues, but don't recommend drafting him in redraft leagues.
The Washington Redskins plan to utilize QB Robert Griffin III's athletic ability in every way imaginable. They are even installing parts of the spread offense Griffin excelled in at the University of Baylor. 'It's been an interesting training camp for us because we are implementing some of the things that Robert did very well at Baylor,' TE Chris Cooley said. 'Our training camp practices probably look a lot more like Baylor's offense. That doesn't necessarily mean that our offense when we start Week 1 will run 30 option plays this season.'
Footballguys' view: Expect lots of bootleg plays with RG3 this year. We like him as a QBBC prospect you could end up starting most weeks.
Dallas Cowboys WR Dez Bryant is playing with quiet confidence during training camp. He is also playing relaxed and has never looked better.
Footballguys' view: Great news, but we need to see it on the football field during a game. Bryant has only one 100-yard game during his two seasons in the league and has failed to play up to his enormous potential. If Bryant can ever figure it out he could finish as a top 5 fantasy WR.
Dallas Cowboys RB Felix Jones has not had an impressive training camp. Jones appears somewhat slow after nursing past leg injuries.
Footballguys' view: The team won't rely on Jones as anything more than a backup RB behind Demarco Murray.
New York Jets QB Mark Sanchez has looked more relaxed and stress-free in training camp than he ever has.
Footballguys' view: Confidence is the key for Sanchez this year. He needs to play better and stop turning the ball over as much as he did last year. Sanchez will lose his starting job to Tim Tebow if he doesn't start playing with more confidence.
New Orleans Saints offensive coordinator Pete Carmichael said RB Chris Ivory has had problems fumbling during training camp. 'It's something that really needs to be emphasized to him everyday,' Carmichael said. 'It's not acceptable, and we just gotta keep coaching it.' Ivory's spot on the roster may be in jeopardy if he continues to struggle.
Footballguys' view: Ivory's on the roster bubble and needs to hold onto the rock if he wants to make the team. Travaris Cadet has looked good in the preseason and could wrestle the RB4 spot away from Ivory.
Seattle Seahawks WR Terrell Owens will play in the preseason game Saturday, Aug. 18. Head coach Pete Carroll said he does not know how long Owens will play.
Footballguys' view: Owens has been impressing in camp and it will be interesting to see him with his new team. Owens may be competing with Braylon Edwards for a roster spot in Seattle.
Buffalo Bills QB Vince Young is still not completely comfortable with the team's offense. Young said he is still not relaxed and hopes more reps in practice and games will help.
Footballguys' view: Young is competing with Tyler Thigpen to be the team's primary backup behind Ryan Fitzpatrick. The race for QB2 is too close to call right now and we won't have a winner until later in the preseason.
The Philadelphia Eagles are intrigued with undrafted free-agent RB Jeff Demps and may consider pursuing him in the near future.
Footballguys' view: Demps may get signed quickly since there are several teams interested in his services. He could contribute immediately as a runner, receiver, or return man on special teams.
Teams continue to inquire about the availability of Pittsburgh Steelers WR Mike Wallace, but the team remains steadfast in not making him available for a trade Thursday, Aug. 16.
Footballguys' view: The Steelers stance has been the same since day one. Wallace is not on the trade block and will have to play under his RFA tender this year.
Carolina Panthers head coach Ron Rivera said the plan is to have QB Cam Newton to play the entire first half in the second preseason game Friday, Aug. 17.
Footballguys' view: Interesting move by Rivera here. Most starters only play a quarter or so during the second week of the preseason. Week three of the preseason is when teams use their starters for about a half.
Buffalo Bills TE Scott Chandler has had a strong performance during training camp and is looking to improve on his 2011 season. Chandler was able to make several difficult catches during practice.
Footballguys' view: Chandler has been the star of Bills training camp and could be in for a bigger role this year. He's a great target in the red zone, but an increase in catches makes him a nice TE2 prospect for your fantasy team.
Buffalo Bills WR Donald Jones had performed well during training camp and continues to hold onto the starting wide receiver spot opposite WR Stevie Johnson.
Footballguys' view: David Nelson will be the team's slot WR with Jones winning the WR2 job. The Bills will spread out the field with their passing game, but Jones isn't an exciting fantasy option in most traditional leagues.
New England Patriots WR Brandon Lloyd has caught almost everything thrown his way in training camp and could be a huge part of the passing game this season.
Footballguys' view: The name to remember in your fantasy drafts is Brandon Lloyd. He's getting drafted as the 17th WR off the board somewhere near the end of the fourth-round. Lloyd could finish the year as a top 10 (maybe even top 5) fantasy WR now that he's in the high powered Patriots passing game and catching passes from Tom Brady.
Indianapolis Colts WR Reggie Wayne is expected to line up all over the field this upcoming season. Wayne is the team's flanker, but will also see time in the slot. 'Unfortunately it comes in year 12, but it's all good,' Wayne said of his new role. 'I'm excited about it. I have a little bit more freedom to do some things.'
Footballguys' view: Wayne should build a great rapport with rookie QB Andrew Luck. We like him as a low end WR2 with upside.
Updating previous items, the agent for undrafted free-agent RB Jeff Demps (Florida), Daniel Rose, said the New York Jets are very interested in his client. Demps may meet with some teams, although there is no word at this point if the Jets are one of those teams.
Footballguys' view: Demps can help as a runner, receiver, or return man on special teams. He's a Darren Sproles like prospect who is incredibly fast and elusive in the open field.
Seattle Seahawks QB Russell Wilson said he believes he's not far away from being a starting quarterback in the NFL. 'I definitely believe I've moved closer,' Wilson said. 'You take one step at a time, one day at a time, one rep at a time and you just improve ... I know there's going to be ups and downs, it's a process like I said, and always in a process there's ups and downs, but as long as I keep moving forward, that's the key.'
Footballguys' view: Wilson is not short on confidence. The rookie has performed well in training camp and the preseason. We think Matt Flynn is likely to win the starting job, but Wilson could take over at some point this year if Flynn struggles.
Minnesota Vikings QB Christian Ponder said he believes the team can make the playoffs this upcoming season. 'I think so. In our minds, we have a good team,' Ponder said. 'Obviously, we've still got a lot of things to get better at in the next two weeks. Last year, we were in so many games. Could have easily been 10-6 instead of 3-13. That's a good sign. We were close last year, and we're only going to get better this year.'
Footballguys' view: We love the confidence here from Ponder, but the truth is they're a long way from making the playoffs. The Vikings play in arguably the toughest division in football, and Ponder has to play better this season if they want to finish around .500.
Carolina Panthers CB Captain Munnerlyn said he wants to continue as one of the team's starting cornerbacks and does not have any trouble going to nickel back as long as he starts in the base defense. CB Josh Norman is considered a candidate for the starting cornerback job.
Footballguys' view: We like the rookie Norman here. At Coastal Carolina Norman played with good football intelligence and a nose for the football. Norman also impressed our Cecil Lammey at the Shrine Game earlier this year. The rookie has a nice size/speed combination and matches up well against bigger or faster Wide Receivers.
That'll do it for today, Folks. Thanks for reading and for all you guys drafting tonight, knock 'em out. We'll see you tomorrow with the update.
Peace,
J
