Garrett Reid, son of Philadelphia Eagles head coach Andy Reid, was found dead in his dorm room at Lehigh University. Offensive coordinator Marty Mornhinweg and defensive coordinator Juan Castillo will oversee the team while Reid is away.
Footballguys' view: Footballguys.com extends its condolences to Coach Reid and his family. Please send thoughts, prayers, and positive vibes their way as they deal with this tragedy.
Kolb threw an interception on his first passes and was 1-of-4 for 4 yards before leaving the game with a rib injury. Kolb was driven to the ground in the end zone in the first quarter by New Orleans Saints defensive tackle Sedrick Ellis.
Kolb was clearly in pain and was taken to the locker room. Kolb faced heavy pressure in his three series of work.
Footballguys' view: An ugly start for Kolb who needed to come out and play well. John Skelton replaced Kolb and looked pretty good. We'll keep an eye on the rib injury but clearly the Arizona QB situation is in play here.
Tennessee Titans WR Kenny Britt is headed to New York, and he will meet with NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell Monday, Aug. 6. It will be determined then whether Britt faces disciplinary action from the league for his July 20 arrest for suspicion of driving under the influence.
Footballguys' view: We think Britt is likely to face a multi-game suspension from the league. He didn't get suspended last year after three arrests during the lockout, and is unlikely to go undisciplined this year after a DUI arrest in July.
St. Louis Rams QB Sam Bradford (ankle) said he is still not 100 percent recovered from the ankle injury he suffered last season and it is something he is managing during practice. 'It's close,' Bradford said. 'I think it's as good as it's going to feel. It's something that we're managing right now. I've been able to take every snap so far without any setbacks and I think that's a positive sign.'
Footballguys' view: Bradford is walking without a limp and is close to being back to himself. He's trying to have a bounce back year after a terrible 2011 campaign. We would like his chances of performing better this year if the Rams had a more experienced WR corps. Bradford is only a low end backup fantasy QB this year.
Dallas Cowboys WR Miles Austin (hamstring) will miss at least one week because of a hamstring injury. The team said they are not worried about the injury at this time.
Footballguys' view: The team may not be worried, but this story should show up big on your fantasy radar. Hamstring injuries are known to linger and Austin is coming off a disappointing 2011 due to injuries to both hamstrings last year. He's unlikely to play in the Cowboys first preseason game.
Pittsburgh Steelers QB Ben Roethlisberger (ankle) suffered a sprained ankle during practice Saturday, Aug. 4.
Footballguys' view: A sprained ankle is nothing for Roethlisberger. He's played through much more severe injuries in the past and shouldn't be out of commission for too long.
St. Louis Rams WR Danny Amendola clearly has been the No. 1 target during training camp. He has been a great fit for offensive coordinator Brian Schottenheimer's scheme which has some of the West Coast principles the team used when he had a breakout season two years ago.
Footballguys' view: Like we told you yesterday, don't forget about Amendola in your fantasy draft. His ADP may begin to creep up as we get closer to the regular season. Amendola is the most experienced WR on the Rams roster and should be the favorite target for QB Sam Bradford.
The New York Jets plan to be more physical on offense, and they'll concentrate more on running the football. After being a primarily zone-running team with former offensive coordinator Brian Schottenheimer and Bill Callahan, new offensive coordinator Tony Sparano plans to put a greater emphasis on gap-scheme plays. He wants the team to thrive as a power running team, with the offensive linemen knocking defenders off the ball and the running backs like RB Shonn Greene plowing straight ahead at a designated gap. 'We can lead this league in rushing again,' running backs coach Anthony Lynn said. 'I have no question.'
Footballguys' view: This type of system is much better for Greene. He's a straight ahead runner who loses momentum when he has to change direction. Having predetermined holes will help Greene be more decisive. When/if Tim Tebow takes over at QB we'll see more zone/read option mixed into the playbook.
Updating previous reports, Chicago Bears head coach Lovie Smith said RB Matt Forte (thumb) briefly left practice Sunday, Aug. 5, because of a thumb injury but everything is fine.
Footballguys' view: As Officer Barbrady would say, "nothing to see here people!" It was a small scare for the Bears earlier today but looks to be very minor right now.
Kansas City Chiefs RB Dexter McCluster has been working with the wide receivers during training camp. He has lined up mostly as the slot receiver during team drills.
Footballguys' view: McCluster is a player without a position. He's not really a RB, but not really a WR, and will play a bit of both this year. We like his natural speed and quickness but aren't expecting much from him in fantasy terms.
Pittsburgh Steelers QB Ben Roethlisberger (ankle) is not practicing Sunday, Aug. 5, because he injured his ankle during practice Saturday, Aug. 4.
Footballguys' view: Roethlisberger won't be sidelined by this ankle injury for very long. Expect Big Ben to play through multiple minor injuries this season.
Dallas Cowboys RB Phillip Tanner (hand) traveled to Dallas to have surgery on his broken hand.
Footballguys' view: Tanner is going to be out around two weeks, and could lose ground in the battle for the team's RB3 spot. He's competing with Ed Wesley and Lance Dunbar for a spot on the depth chart. We love Tanner's ability but this injury at this crucial point of the year could cost him a job if Dunbar or Wesley standout during the preseason.
Tennessee Titans head coach Mike Munchak said the team will increase the intensity of WR Kenny Britt's (knees) workout next week.
Footballguys' view: Sources close to the team report that Britt has been doing well as he comes back from this latest knee injury. When he does return to the field we should see Britt put on a play count by the coaching staff. He's got tremendous upside but is a huge risk because of his injury history and off field issues.
The Seattle Seahawks have released WR Antonio Bryant. In a corresponding move, the team has re-signed free-agent PK Carson Wiggs. Terms of the contract were not disclosed.
Footballguys' view: That didn't take long. Bryant was just added last week and some thought he could replace Big Mike Williams on the roster. When the Seahawks added Braylon Edwards it was a bad sign for Bryant's future with the team. His NFL career may be over.
Denver Broncos RB Mario Fannin (Achilles') suffered a torn Achilles' tendon during a scrimmage Saturday, Aug. 4, and is expected to miss the entire 2012 season.
Footballguys' view: This could be it for Fannin in the pros. A knee injury cut short his training camp last year as he set out his entire rookie season on Injured Reserve. Coming back from an Achilles' injury will be incredibly difficult for the undrafted free agent out of Auburn.
Minnesota Vikings WR Greg Childs (knees) tore the patella tendons in both of his knee during a scrimmage Saturday, Aug. 5, and will miss the entire 2012 season. He will undergo surgery to repair the tendons in the next few days.
Footballguys' view: This is the type of injury that could end Childs career. He was trying to regain his form after a 2010 patella tendon injury in college at Arkansas. Childs never looked the same after that injury and struggled during his senior season in 2011.
Detroit Lions DE Cliff Avril said he does not expect to play in the first preseason game Friday, Aug. 10, but the final decision will be made by head coach Jim Schwartz.
Footballguys' view: The Lions have no need to rush Avril into the lineup. They can ease him back into practice and see what kind of football shape he's in.
Buffalo Bills CB Leodis McKelvin has been lining up mostly against the slot receiver during training camp because the coaches believe he would perform well there and not have to worry about deep passes which he has struggled with in the past. 'He has great quickness and great speed and the only trouble he has had is with the deep ball and you don't get many deep balls in the slot,' said Gailey. 'So you're trying to let him do what he does best without him having to worry about something that he's struggled with in the past.'
Footballguys' view: McKelvin has the freelance ability and speed to keep up with slot WRs. The selection of CB Stephon Gilmore should lock down one side of the field. With their ferocious pass rush they could see shorter passes by opposing QBs to the slot WR.
Green Bay Packers LB Nick Perry said he is still getting used to the move to linebacker but said is getting more comfortable with every day of practice. 'It's hard. You're playing something totally different than what you're used to doing. It was a bit uncomfortable for me but doing something consistently day after day you start to get comfortable with what you're doing, comfortable with your techniques,' Perry said.
Footballguys' view: Perry's read and react skills are elite. He has a nose for the football and the athleticism to fly to the play quickly. Perry will need to show better conditioning if he's standing up to play Linebacker at the pro level.
That'll do it for today, Folks. Thanks for reading and thanks for letting us be a part of your Football season. It's going to be fun. We'll see you tomorrow with the update.
Peace,
J
