Updating a previous report, Houston Texans WR Andre Johnson (groin) said he expects to miss around a week because of a mild groin strain.
Footballguys' view: The Texans will take it easy on their superstar WR. No need to rush him back into the lineup for what is considered a minor injury.
Miami Dolphins QB Ryan Tannehill said he believes he still has a chance to win the starting job during training camp. 'I feel like I'm in it,' Tannehill said. 'I may be naive, but the coaches haven't given me any indication that I'm not so I'm going to go out there every day and do my best to win the job.'
Footballguys' view: Tannehill may take over as the starter at some point during the season, but we don't think he'll start from week one. At this time it seems like David Garrard has the advantage over Tannehill and Matt Moore.
New York Giants WR Hakeem Nicks (foot) recently has started running and expects to start cutting with his foot in a few days. Nicks said he is schedule and believes a return in mid-August is reasonable.
Footballguys' view: Nicks is a WR1 in fantasy, but selecting him comes with considerable risk. Good thing WR is a super deep position this year.
New York Jets QB Mark Sanchez and Tim Tebow each went 1-for-7 in team drills during practice Sunday, July 29. Sanchez went 5-for-7 and Tebow went 4-for-6 during seven-on-seven drills.
Footballguys' view: Not a good sign here. We know it's early but the Jets need better performances from their QBs, especially Sanchez. Tebow is not known as a good practice player so it's no surprise that he's struggling in Jets camp.
Pittsburgh Steelers general manager Kevin Colbert said Saturday, July 28, that WR Mike Wallace is not going anywhere. 'Mike Wallace is not available for trade,' Colbert said.
Footballguys' view: Rumors have been swirling about teams possibly interested in the Pro Bowl wideout. At this time it looks like the Steelers are going to continue playing hardball and Wallace will be forced to sign his one-year $2.7MM tender.
Updating a previous report, the Minnesota Vikings want RB Adrian Peterson (knee) to see some action during the preseason. 'Now, will that happen? I don't know,' head coach Leslie Frazier said. 'We'll see how he progresses. But ideally, you'd like him to get some carries at some point in the preseason just for his benefit, where he can gain some confidence and get a feel for where he is and where he needs to be by the first game of the season.'
Footballguys' view: They'll use Peterson sparingly when he does take to the football field. Sources close to the team feel that Peterson will be eased into the lineup at the start of the regular season. That means we could see more from backup Toby Gerhart during the first month of the season than we do from Peterson.
Updating a previous report, San Francisco 49ers WR Michael Crabtree (ankle, foot) missed practice Sunday, July 29. General manager Trent Baalke said the injury is not a long-term concern. The injury is to his right ankle foot, which is not the foot he has had problems with in the past.
Footballguys' view: Good news? Crabtree is a talented WR but injuries and inconsistencies have prevented him from playing up to his potential.
Tampa Bay Buccaneers RB Doug Martin, as an update to previous reports, is looking the part of a primary running back. Not only is he seeing the large majority of the first-team snaps, he is also staying on the field for third-down/pass-protection snaps. Pass-protection work is an area Martin's competition, LeGarrette Blount, has previously struggled. Martin, a rookie first-round draft choice, has shown a quick burst at the line of scrimmage, is hitting holes decisively and using his speed to make defenders miss once he hits the second layer of a defense.
Footballguys' view: Martin is very capable as a runner or receiver out of the backfield. He must prove himself in pass protection if he wants to be a full time back for the Bucs.
Oakland Raiders head coach Dennis Allen said the team is comfortable with RBs Mike Goodson and Taiwan Jones as the backups to RB Darren McFadden at this point.
Footballguys' view: The team may consider free agent Cedric Benson if they're unhappy with their RB depth as camp continues.
Houston Texans WRs Lestar Jean and DeVier Posey have been putting in extra work after each practice of training camp, running routes and catching passes on the field. They both caught passes from a JUGS machine for about 15 minutes after practice Sunday, July 29.
Footballguys' view: Jean and Posey are competing for the WR3 spot behind Andre Johnson and Kevin Walter. Jean is a big WR with a large wingspan and frame to box out defenders. Posey is a talented rookie who is dangerous after the catch because of his speed and elusiveness in the open field.
The Baltimore Ravens and the agent for QB Joe Flacco met again Sunday, July 29, to discuss a new contract for the quarterback. The meeting was held at the team's training complex in Maryland. Both sides have been increasing discussions in recent weeks. Flacco is in the final year of his rookie deal.
Footballguys' view: Now that Ray Rice has a new deal the team has turned their focus to Flacco. We have a feeling the two sides will come to an agreement before Flacco hits the open market.
Philadelphia Eagles RB Bryce Brown appears to be in the lead over RB Chris Polk for the No. 3 running back job.
Footballguys' view: Brown's main competition is UDFA Chris Polk. In 2009 at Tennessee Brown looked good as a runner and receiver out of the backfield. He was one of the nation's best coming out of high school but his college career was disappointing at both Tennessee and Kansas State.
Dallas Cowboys executive vice president Stephen Jones said RB Felix Jones will be the team's kick returner this season.
Footballguys' view: Jones is a dynamic athlete so this isn't a surprise. He may not get many carries this year but is the back to handcuff for Demarco Murray owners.
The Denver Broncos and OT Ryan Clady might complete an extension before the start of the regular season. The team offered him a five-year, $50 million contract, according to reports. However, he is looking for money similar to that of Cleveland Browns OT Joe Thomas.
Footballguys' view: Clady is not going to get Thomas money, but we expect a deal to get done before the start of the regular season. He surrendered nine sacks last year but that was mostly due to Tim Tebow holding onto the ball too long. Denver needs to take care of business with Clady soon. He should have a much better year protecting Peyton Manning and would only want more money on the open market.
Minnesota Vikings WR Michael Jenkins (knee) had offseason surgery on his knee, but the injury is no longer an issue. 'There was a period there where he was pretty far behind, but he has caught up,' head coach Leslie Frazier said Saturday, July 28.
Footballguys' view: With the addition of guys like Jarius Wright and Greg Childs in the 2012 NFL Draft it puts Jenkins on the roster bubble. We'll see how effective he can be coming back from this injury. The team could use Jenkins to fill in for a suspended Jerome Simpson during the first three games of the season.
Minnesota Vikings QB Christian Ponder hit 12 of his 14 pass attempts in 11-on-11 drills during practice Saturday, July 28.
Footballguys' view: Ponder is a smart QB with the ability to quickly scan the field and make good decisions with the football. He needs to play with more confidence and not get too down on himself if he struggles. Ponder also has durability concerns after battling through several different injuries in college.
That'll do it for today, Folks. Thanks for reading and thanks for being a part of Footballguys. We'll see you tomorrow with the update.
Peace,
J
