Seattle Seahawks QB Tarvaris Jackson will enter training camp as the team's starting quarterback, not offseason acquisition QB Matt Flynn.
Footballguys' view: It'll be interesting to see how long this lasts...
Pittsburgh Steelers CB Ike Taylor said he expects the Steelers and restricted free-agent WR Mike Wallace to reach an agreement on a new contract and for Wallace to report to training camp on time.
Footballguys' view: The two sides don't seem close to a new deal, and Wallace may have to play this year under his $2.7MM restricted free agent tender. Wallace doesn't have much leverage in the situation, and the Steelers are not known to overpay players.
Tampa Bay Buccaneers running backs coach Earnest Byner said he has been impressed with how RB Doug Martin has performed as a pass blocker during offseason workouts. 'The thing that they struggle with most of the time is pass protection and especially nickel pass protection, but I don't think that's going to be an issue with him,' Byner said. 'He has done some good things. He has some quickness. Doug is really smart, and eager to grab some of the concepts that we are teaching. He is excited to come out here and play for the Buccaneers.'
Footballguys' view: Pass protection is key to a young RB who wants to get on the playing field. Martin was a good pass protector in college, so picking up pro concepts shouldn't be a problem for him. He's competing with LeGarrette Blount to be the Buccaneers lead RB in their ground heavy offense.
Miami Dolphins WR Chad Ochocinco told the team before they sign him that he has problems learning the New England Patriots playbook.
Footballguys' view: At least Ochocinco was honest with his new team. The Patriots seemed to go out of their way to accommodate the veteran WR but in the end it didn't work out. The Dolphins have a poorly talented WR corps, so Ochocinco has a real chance to produce as one of their top WRs. He's coming off the board at WR53 in the early 12th round in standard 12-team leagues.
The Cleveland Browns are not interested in acquiring Green Bay Packers WR James Jones at this point.
Footballguys' view: The Browns are moving forward with Greg Little and Mohammed Massoquoi as their top 2 WRs. We feel Jones would be an upgrade over Massoquoi, but apparently the Browns feel differently. Jones is buried on the depth chart in Green Bay behind Greg Jennings, Jordy Nelson, and Randall Cobb.
The Cleveland Browns likely would not be interested in Minnesota Vikings WR Percy Harvin if he became available in a trade.
Footballguys' view: The Browns SHOULD be interested in a guy like Harvin if he were to become available on the trade block. Cleveland has one of the most questionable WR corps in the entire league, and Harvin would be a huge upgrade at the position. Second-year WR Greg Little should be their lead WR this year. He struggled as a rookie last season, but reminds us of a younger Anquan Boldin if he can play up to his potential.
The New England Patriots are not expected to sign free-agent RB Sammy Morris (Cowboys) unless they have an injury at the position.
Footballguys' view: The Patriots added Joseph Addai earlier this year in free agency, and now their RB corps is jam packed with talent. Second-year RBs Shane Vereen and Stevan Ridley will compete for the lead spot on the depth chart. Veterans Danny Woodhead and Addai will compete to be the lead change of pace RB.
Buffalo Bills head coach Chan Gailey said he was impressed with how CB Stephon Gilmore looked during offseason workouts. 'He has done really an excellent job. Everything that we have asked him to do, to pick up, to adjust to---he has handled it so well. He is very mature beyond his years. He really is. He has done an excellent job. I think he has a chance to be a very good player if the same things show up in pads that showed up in shorts,' Gailey said.
Footballguys' view: Gilmore isn't the biggest CB but plays bigger than his size. He's got good straight line speed and transitions smoothly out of his backpedal.
That'll do it for today, Folks. Thanks for reading and thanks for being a part of Footballguys. We'll see you tomorrow with the update.
Peace,
J
