Redskins | Three could be PUP candidates    Sat Jul 12, 12:39 PM

Washington Redskins DE Stephen Bowen (knee), DT Jason Hatcher (knee) and CB Richard Crawford (knee) are candidates to start training camp on Physically Unable to Perform list.

Footballguys view: The PUP list for training camp is different than the PUP list for the regular season. In camp, teams can put a player on the PUP list and bring him back at any time. During the regular season, the PUP list prevents a player from coming back for six weeks. After that there is a three week grace period to determine if a player is ready, or if he needs to be put on season-ending Injured Reserve.

Colts | Trent Richardson will need to produce     Sat Jul 12, 12:15 PM

Indianapolis Colts RB Trent Richardson will need to produce right away in the running game if he wants to keep the starting job, because the team will not wait for him to turn things around if RB Ahmad Bradshaw or Vick Ballard are playing well.

Footballguys view: Richardson needs to get his confidence back. He looked tentative and lost last year after the trade which sent him from Cleveland to Indianapolis. Richardson is one of the most naturally talented runners in the game today, and he needs to start playing up to the potential he showed during his rookie season in 2012.

Packers | Jarrett Boykin has hold of No. 3 WR job    Sat Jul 12, 11:56 AM

Green Bay Packers WR Jarrett Boykin will be entering training camp as the No. 3 wide receiver, and it will be hard for one of the other wide receivers to outperform him for the job.

Footballguys view: The Packers have a couple of talented rookies in Davante Adams and Jared Abbrederis behind Boykin. Those two will push the veteran for the WR3 job, but we should see Boykin hold them off during camp. The lack of a quality tight end in Green Bay could mean more targets for Boykin in 2014.

Packers | Competition for starting TE job wide open    Sat Jul 12, 11:47 AM

Green Bay Packers tight ends coach Jerry Fontenot said the competition for the starting tight end job will be wide open when training camp starts. 'I think we are pretty wide open at this point,' Fontenot said. 'I think guys have shown some progress, and those guys warrant a much bigger look. And I think once we get to training camp, we'll have an idea of a rotation, at least, and giving guys reps just to make sure they're ready to start the season.' TE Andrew Quarless may be the safest option to start at this point, but TE Richard Rodgers could start in the near future because of his performance during offseason workouts.

Footballguys view: Watch this competition closely in training camp. Rodgers has been getting some praise for his performance this offseason. He might be considered a favorite for the job at this time. Rodgers is a better option than the inconsistent Quarless.

Falcons | Antone Smith may need special teams to make roster    Sat Jul 12, 11:17 AM

Atlanta Falcons RB Antone Smith may need to perform well on special teams if he wants a chance to make the final roster.

Footballguys view: Smith is a short/compact runner with a strong lower body. This helps him change direction smoothly and keep his balance when making cuts. Smith might be used as a special teams player, but he won't get many carries or be much of a fantasy factor if he makes the final roster.

Broncos | Chris Harris says team has high expectations    Sat Jul 12, 11:16 AM

Denver Broncos CB Chris Harris Jr. said it is Super Bowl or bust for the team this upcoming season and everyone should be ready to go when training camp starts.

Footballguys view: Anything less than a Super Bowl championship just won't do. The Broncos have reworked their defense to be tougher in 2014. They still have Peyton Manning and the league's most dangerous offense, so getting back to the Super Bowl is a distinct possibility. Denver would be the first team to return to the big game after losing it since the Buffalo Bills did that in 1993.

NFL | Jim Leonhard has talked with teams    Sat Jul 12, 10:28 AM

Free-agent SS Jim Leonhard (Bills) has talked with team's, including the Green Bay Packers. 'It would mean a lot, but we've had a lot of conversations with teams, Green Bay being one of them,' said Leonhard. 'They're a great organization, I'd love to play for them but it hasn't worked out up to now. You never know what can happen in the future, but we'll see. They're a great organization and it's always fun to see the fans and have a lot of family that follows them closely.'

Seahawks | Richard Sherman done talking about Michael Crabtree    Sat Jul 12, 10:13 AM

Seattle Seahawks CB Richard Sherman said he is done talking about San Francisco 49ers WR Michael Crabtree. "I'm pretty much done talking about that," Sherman said. "It's getting old, it's getting old to me. I'm tired of people asking me about it."

Footballguys view: We'll see these two do their talking on the field. The NFC West is the toughest division in football, and it's not outlandish to consider Seattle and San Francisco the two best teams in the game today. We love this rivalry and cannot wait for their first game against each other in Week 13.

Steelers | Derek Moye will have to compete for spot    Fri Jul 11, 11:17 PM

Pittsburgh Steelers WR Derek Moye has improved this offseason but will still need to compete for a roster spot during training camp, according to wide receivers coach Richard Mann.

Footballguys view: Moye is a slender receiver with good speed. He can work as a return man if need be, and that skill may help him earn a reserve spot.

Steelers | Martavis Bryant expected to help in red zone    Fri Jul 11, 11:15 PM

The Pittsburgh Steelers hope WR Martavis Bryant will be able to be a factor in the red zone and could also be a deep threat on offense, according to wide receivers coach Richard Mann. 'He's a big guy, different from what we've had, as far as his length. We feel like we can utilize his talents in the red zone. He has a big reach. He has good speed. So we can use him in various ways, as far as cleaning things out. He's also a deep threat. He does have the speed,' Mann said.

Footballguys view: Bryant is a talented rookie who we're excited about in the pros. He knows how to use his frame to box out smaller defenders and win at the point of the catch. Bryant could begin his career with the Steelers as a red-zone threat as he gets used to the pro game.

Bengals | OC wants to help Andy Dalton    Fri Jul 11, 09:37 PM

Cincinnati Bengals offensive coordinator Hue Jackson said he wants to help QB Andy Dalton improve his play this upcoming season. 'We are tethered together. And I'll jump off a building with this guy,' Jackson said, 'because I believe in the things he's trying to accomplish with his career, and I think I can help him.'

Footballguys view: Jackson will help Dalton by limiting what he does on the field with a powerful ground game. We could see Gio Bernard and rookie Jeremy Hill punish defenses on the ground to set up play-action passing for Dalton and A.J. Green. He was the 3rd-best fantasy QB last year, but this is a different system than what Jay Gruden ran. Expect Dalton's numbers to fall to QB2 levels. His current ADP is QB17 (12.02) in 12-team PPR leagues.

Browns | Teammate does not think Josh Gordon should be cut    Fri Jul 11, 09:10 PM

Cleveland Browns SS Donte Whitner said the team should not release WR Josh Gordon, because the players and coaches need to help him out with off-field issues. 'We have to help him collectively. It's not going be one person that helps him, it's not going to be two people that help him. It's gonna come from the front office, the coaching staff, the players and his whole family. We have to help him - not only for football purposes, but for life purposes to get his life in order,' Whitner said. Whitner said he is one of several teammates that have reached out to Gordon, who is very remorseful for what has happened.

Footballguys view: Gordon just doesn't get it--and he may not ever understand. He's got a problem and he needs help. Hopefully he does feel remorse and will take the proper steps to get his life back on track. Gordon is clearly talented, but he needs to stay out of trouble or else his days as a pro are numbered.

Bills | EJ Manuel looking to play smarter    Fri Jul 11, 09:02 PM

Buffalo Bills QB EJ Manuel said he wants to play smarter when he runs with the ball because he does not want to suffer another injury. 'That was one thing I had to learn: to be smart when I take off with the football,' Manuel said. 'Instead of trying to get an extra three yards, step out of bounds and slide. Those are all the nuances I had to learn.' Manuel said he is 100 percent healthy and stronger than he was last season.

Footballguys view: Manuel needs to start running out of bounds and sliding. He's huge and athletic, so smaller defenders have to go for his knees in order to bring him down. Manuel re-injured his knee last year after cutting back inside near the sideline to pick up an extra yard or two. He's got to get over that if he wants to stay healthy and play up to his enormous potential as a pro.

Steelers | Coach happy with Le'Veon Bell's work    Fri Jul 11, 08:58 PM

Pittsburgh Steelers RB Le'Veon Bell performed well during offseason workouts and has been showing improvements in his game, according to manager Mike Tomlin. 'Le'Veon Bell has had a great offseason,' Tomlin said. 'He's really shown that he is excited about taking the next step in terms of work that he's done thus far, particularly from a conditioning standpoint.'

Footballguys view: Bell is ready for a breakout year. He's big enough to wear down opponents as the game goes on, plus Bell is a great receiving option out of the backfield. He's got the making of a bellcow back, and the team may give him over 300 carries in 2014.

Steelers | Dri Archer to be used at multiple positions    Fri Jul 11, 08:54 PM

Pittsburgh Steelers RB Dri Archer will receive playing time at running back and wide receiver this upcoming season, according to head coach Mike Tomlin.

Footballguys view: Archer is listed as a running back, but he's built more like a small slot receiver. He's fast in a straight line, but Archer is never going to run through an arm tackle. The Steelers could use him in multiple ways, but he's unlikely to be much of a fantasy factor in 2014.

Steelers | Preseason to determine RB rotation    Fri Jul 11, 08:42 PM

Pittsburgh Steelers head coach Mike Tomlin said training camp and preseason games will determine how the team uses RBs Le'Veon Bell, LeGarrette Blount and Dri Archer in the running game.

Footballguys view: We're likely to see Bell as the primary back. He can hammer the rock between the tackles, plus he's a fantastic receiver out of the backfield. Blount will be a short-yardage and goal line option for the team. Archer is more like a slot receiver than he is a running back. We're not that confident in Todd Haley to be creative enough to use him effectively.

Browns | Offense to focus on ground game    Fri Jul 11, 06:28 PM

Cleveland Browns SS Donte Whitner said the team's offense will be based on running the football heavily. 'I'm going to stand back and let this competition develop and may the best man win, but our offense is gonna be predicated on running the football and being physical in the run game also,' Whitner told SiriusXM NFL Radio. 'You can't just ask both quarterbacks to stand back there and throw the ball 35, 40 times a game.'

Footballguys view: It's a Kyle Shanahan offense in Cleveland. We'll see an emphasis on zone-running to set up play-action passes. Fantasy owners can expect the workload to be split between the likes of Ben Tate and rookie Terrance West. Tate's current ADP is RB28 (6.05) while West's is RB36 (8.05) in 12-team PPR leagues.

NFL | Marcus Mariota still unsure if he'll declare next year    Fri Jul 11, 04:56 PM

Oregon Ducks QB Marcus Mariota is still undecided on if he'll leave college for the NFL following next season. 'The opportunity to leave is there, but at the same time, college is fun and I'm not sure what I'm going to do yet.'

Footballguys view: Mariota will be among the top quarterbacks--if not the top passer--in 2015. We like the way he uses his athleticism to offset defenses. Once concerned with his scrambling ability, Mariota has the capability of going through progressions and making stick throws down the field. He'll be a top prospect along with Brett Hundley (UCLA) and Jameis Winston (Florida State) if they declare.

49ers | Bruce Ellington focused on football    Fri Jul 11, 04:20 PM

San Francisco 49ers WR Bruce Ellington recently said he's giving 100 percent every time he steps on the field, adding he's simply going to work hard and chase his dream.

Footballguys view: Ellington is a speed guy who knows how to get on top of the defense in a hurry. He's not a nuanced route-runner and he needs to work on his ability to make tough catches. Too often, Ellington will get outmuscled at the point of the catch. His lack of size makes him a slot receiver in the pros. He'll compete with Stevie Johnson and Quinton Patton for playing time this year.
