New England Patriots WRs Julian Edelman (foot) and Danny Amendola (knee) and TE Rob Gronkowski (knee, back) are all officially active for the AFC Championship against the Denver Broncos Sunday, Jan. 24.

Footballguys view: Edelman and Gronkowski should get the biggest share of the workload against the Broncos.

Broncos | Chris Harris to play Sunday    Sun Jan 24, 11:34 AM

Confirming a previous report, Denver Broncos CB Chris Harris Jr. (shoulder) will play in the AFC Championship Game against the New England Patriots, despite continuing to experience some weakness and pain.

Footballguys view: He has a deep-tissue shoulder bruise that has required 24-hour treatment and even had difficulty brushing his teeth. However, the injury will not require surgery.

NFL | Paxton Lynch compared to Blake Bortles    Sat Jan 23, 11:55 PM

Former University of Memphis QB Paxton Lynch is being trained by former Univeristy of Central Florida offensive coordinator Charlie Taaffe, and Taaffe said Lynch has a stronger arm than Jacksonville Jaguars QB Blake Bortles, who played for Central Florida when Taaffe was the coordinator.

Footballguys view: We could see that comparison. Lynch is big, strong and has the arm to make all the throws in the NFL. However, he needs to prove that he can make complicated reads after working in a simplistic Memphis offense in college that relied a lot on wide receiver screens and shorter routes. Lynch is likely a first-round pick, and there's a chance he's the first QB off the board.

Panthers | Corey Brown on the field a lot    Sat Jan 23, 09:33 PM

Carolina Panthers WR Corey Brown faces the Arizona Cardinals in the NFC Championship Game Sunday, Jan. 24, and Brown ran the most routes of any player on the team over the final four games of the regular season.

Patriots | James White could be busy    Sat Jan 23, 09:25 PM

New England Patriots RB James White faces the Denver Broncos in the AFC Championship Game, and no team allowed more catches or receiving touchdown to running backs in the regular season than the Broncos.

Dolphins | DeVante Parker primed for breakout?    Sat Jan 23, 09:05 PM

Miami Dolphins WR DeVante Parker is the likely candidate to take over the No. 1 receiver role in 2016, according to Liz Loza of Yahoo! Sports.

Footballguys view: The entire Dolphins offense (especially QB Ryan Tannehill) should be more productive with Adam Gase running the show. Parker and Jarvis Landry should have career-best seasons under Gase's watch.

Panthers | Greg Olsen facing tough matchup    Sat Jan 23, 08:18 PM

Carolina Panthers TE Greg Olsen faces the Arizona Cardinals in the NFC Championship Game Sunday, Jan. 24, and LB Deone Bucannon allowed eight catches for 105 yards and no touchdowns against the top seven tight ends this season.

Footballguys view: The Cardinals are going to do whatever they can to slow down Olsen. This is likely to hamper what QB Cam Newton does through the air. We'll see if the Panthers can find creative ways to get Olsen open.

Eagles | More production from Zach Ertz?    Sat Jan 23, 06:56 PM

Philadelphia Eagles TE Zach Ertz posted 75 receptions in 2015, but he had six games with three receptions or fewer in 15 games played. Ertz hasn't been featured as much in the passing game in recent seasons, but head coach Doug Pederson maximized the talents of Kansas City Chiefs TE Travis Kelce in their time together, now Ertz is likely to be in the game plan more going forward.

Footballguys view: Ertz can be a dangerous weapon, but he doesn't score that many touchdowns. A lack of touchdown catches limits his fantasy value. Keep this Pederson/Kelce connection in mind when considering a tight end next year. Ertz finished 2015 as TE10, but he could finish 2016 as an even better fantasy player.

Eagles | DeMarco Murray, Ryan Mathews to get FB    Sat Jan 23, 06:55 PM

Philadelphia Eagles RBs DeMarco Murray and Ryan Mathews are expected to have company in the backfield in 2016, as head coach Doug Pederson has liked to have a fullback on the roster and use him to block in the running game.

Footballguys view: The Eagles will likely use some form of RBBC between the two. Murray could be the lead back, but Mathews is a proven player and deserves time as well. This will be an interesting fantasy situation to navigate before next year's fantasy drafts.

Eagles | Darren Sproles might see more passes    Sat Jan 23, 06:54 PM

Philadelphia Eagles RB Darren Sproles might be featured more in the passing game under new head coach Doug Pederson.

Footballguys view: Sproles can be a factor in PPR leagues. He may get a larger opportunity with the change in coaching. With the right amount of catches, yards and touchdowns we could see Sproles break back into being a top-30 fantasy running back. He hasn't been in the top 30 since 2012 (no. 22) when he was with the Saints.

Eagles | Jordan Matthews to move from slot?    Sat Jan 23, 06:54 PM

Philadelphia Eagles WR Jordan Matthews was one of the biggest slot receivers in the league under former head coach Chip Kelly. Beat writer Dave Spadaro suggests Matthews might be moved to the outside now, as Matthews absorbed a lot of shots in the middle of the field working in the slot, and the team could try to work him more into free space.

Footballguys view: Even with the limitations of the slot, Matthews finished as the 19th-best fantasy receiver in standard scoring. This was up from 24th where he ranked as a rookie in 2014. With the proper usage, Matthews could continue to rise up the fantasy rankings.

Chiefs | Decision time on Jamaal Charles    Sat Jan 23, 06:53 PM

Kansas City Chiefs RB Jamaal Charles (knee) was hurt and then the team went on average 135.9 yards - fifth in the league - in 11 regular season games with RBs Charcandrick West and Spencer Ware. He has a $2 million report-to-training camp bonus due in July, and he could be asked to take a pay cut and/or relinquish that bonus to return while earning it back through incentives.

Footballguys view: Charles can still be a superstar in the NFL, and the Chiefs should use him as much as possible in 2016. However, both West and Ware looked great starting this year and they could be worked into the mix a bit this season.

Chiefs | Transition tag for Jaye Howard?    Sat Jan 23, 06:53 PM

Kansas City Chiefs impending free-agent DT Jaye Howard might be slapped with the transition tag, former agent and salary-cap expert Joel Corry suggested Saturday, Jan. 23.

Footballguys view: This is the smart move for the Chiefs. With the transition tag, Howard would cost $9.3 million in 2016.

Chiefs | Derrick Johnson unlikely to be tagged    Sat Jan 23, 06:52 PM

Kansas City Chiefs impending free-agent LB Derrick Johnson is likely to fetch around $6 million per season, similar to the deal Cleveland Browns LB Karlos Dansby is playing for. The franchise tag for linebackers is expected to be around $14 million and that is not likely to be a realistic option.

Footballguys view: After the season-ending loss to the Patriots, Johnson expressed his desire to stay with the Chiefs. He may not give them a huge hometown discount, but we could see the two sides coming to an agreement before Johnson hits the open market.

Lions | Caraun Reid had surgery    Sat Jan 23, 03:51 PM

Detroit Lions DT Caraun Reid (ankle) recently underwent ankle surgery, but he is expected to be back on the field sometime this offseason.

Footballguys view: Reid, a fifth-round pick out of Princeton in 2014, is a player with good upside. He flashed at times this year even though he was battling a high-ankle sprain suffered in training camp. Having surgery now will help insure that he's good to go when camp rolls around later this year.

Cowboys | Tony Romo will have scan     Sat Jan 23, 03:36 PM

Dallas Cowboys QB Tony Romo (shoulder) will have a CT scan this week to determine if he needs shoulder surgery. Romo did say that his shoulder and back feel good.

Footballguys view: Surgery or no, Romo needs to do whatever he can to get back to full strength and then stay at full strength. With Romo in the lineup the Cowboys can go far. However, they need to have a better backup plan in place for if (when?) he gets banged up again. We think the Cowboys will consider adding a backup quarterback via free agency or a developmental quarterback through the NFL draft.

Vikings | Sign Terrell Sinkfield    Sat Jan 23, 02:08 PM

Free-agent WR Terrell Sinkfield (Giants) was signed to a Reserve/Futures deal by the Minnesota Vikings Saturday, Jan. 23.

Footballguys view: Sinkfield is super fast...like 4.2 40-yard dash fast. He's a Minnesota native who impressed during his time in the CFL. In super deep dynasty leagues, we're monitoring his NFL career.

Saints | Drew Brees could sign extension    Sat Jan 23, 01:51 PM

New Orleans Saints QB Drew Brees could sign a multi-year extension this offseason and still save the Saints millions against their cap, according to ESPN.com's Mike Triplett.

Footballguys view: Brees has a $30 million cap number in 2016, the final year of his current contract. We'd be shocked if he played with that number. Expect him to get an extension (and a lower cap hit) in the near future.

Patriots | Jamie Collins expected to play    Sat Jan 23, 01:16 PM

New England Patriots LB Jamie Collins (back) is expected to play in the AFC Championship despite being listed as questionable.

Footballguys view: Good news for the Patriots here. Collins is supremely athletic and capable of rushing the passer or covering in space.

Texans | Kevin Johnson undergoes surgery    Sat Jan 23, 11:03 AM

Houston Texans CB Kevin Johnson (foot, wrist) recently underwent surgery to repair a stress fracture in his foot.

Patriots | LaAdrian Waddle, Tre Jackson out    Sat Jan 23, 10:51 AM

New England Patriots OT LaAdrian Waddle (shoulder) and OG Tre Jackson (knee) have been ruled out for the AFC Championship game against the Denver Broncos Sunday, Jan. 24.

Footballguys view: Great, just what the Patriots needed....offensive line troubles as they're set to face off against a ferocious Broncos defense.

Jets | Ray Rice not on radar of NYJ    Fri Jan 22, 10:20 PM

Free-agent RB Ray Rice is not on the New York Jets' radar, according to general manager Mike Maccagnan, but he admitted that discussions about Rice have taken place internally.

Footballguys view: Anything can happen, but we just don't see Rice playing in the NFL again. We'll see if a team wants to add him (and all that goes with that) later this offseason.

Chiefs | Jamaal Charles ahead of schedule?    Fri Jan 22, 10:15 PM

Kansas City Chiefs RB Jamaal Charles (knee) may be ahead of schedule as he rehabs from surgery to repair a torn anterior cruciate ligament, according to general manager John Dorsey.

Footballguys view: That would be great news for the Chiefs, Charles and fantasy owners. He'll return as their lead back, but with Spencer Ware playing so well we could see him get a tiny bit of playing time behind Charles as their power change-of-pace back. Charcandrick West did a fine job as the starter, and he may also get a bit of action when Charles needs a breather.

Eagles | Philadelphia want to lock up Zach Ertz    Fri Jan 22, 10:05 PM

Philadelphia Eagles TE Zach Ertz is one of the players the team wants to sign to a long-term deal, according to a source.

Footballguys view: Ertz is under contract through 2016, and he has a $1.7 million cap number in the final year of his deal. Last season, Ertz posted a career-best 853 receiving yards. However, he was only able to snare two touchdowns. In order to be a more effective fantasy tight end (he was 10th-best in 2015), Ertz needs to become a bigger presence in the red zone.

Steelers | Ben Roethlisberger happy with play    Fri Jan 22, 08:49 PM

Pittsburgh Steelers QB Ben Roethlisberger said he feels like he is playing some of his best football and will work on keeping his arm strong this offseason. Roethlisberger has completed 67.1% and 68.0% of his passes over the last two seasons, which are the best two seasons of his career.

Footballguys view: Fantasy owners were happy with Roethlisberger, but mostly when he was healthy and at home. He finished as the 21st-ranked fantasy quarterback this year, but he only played in 12 games.

Broncos | Full workload for Chris Harris?    Fri Jan 22, 07:39 PM

Updating a previous report, Denver Broncos CB Chris Harris Jr. (shoulder) is ready for a full workload in the NFC Championship against the New England Patriots Sunday, Jan. 24, according to head coach Gary Kubiak. Harris practiced in full all week and has shown that he is ready to play. 'I think Chris is fine,' Kubiak said. 'He had a good week. ... Everything I've seen this week in practice tells me Chris is fine, ready to go. ... I think he's feeling a lot better than going into last week's game.'

Footballguys view: Harris is playing banged up, but that's what players do in the postseason. It's win-or-go-home for the Broncos as they host the Patriots on Sunday in the AFC Championship Game. He'll likely be tasked with covering Julian Edelman...a matchup that could decide the game.

Broncos | Bradley Roby may play more    Fri Jan 22, 07:37 PM

Denver Broncos CB Bradley Roby may play more in the AFC Championship against the New England Patriots with CB Chris Harris Jr. (shoulder) admitting that he may be limited with a shoulder injury. Harris played only 75% of the defensive snaps in the divisional round after playing a team-leading average of 96.9% of snaps on the season. Roby (hip) is listed as probable with a hip injury.

Footballguys view: Roby is an up-and-coming player in the NFL. If Harris is too banged up to play, the Broncos should insert Roby into that spot with confidence.

Patriots | Tom Brady struggled against four-man rush    Fri Jan 22, 06:07 PM

New England Patriots QB Tom Brady had a QBR of 4.1 when he was pressured by a four-man or fewer pass rush in 2015, which ranked 28th among 35 qualifying passers. Nineteen% of Brady's dropbacks this year ended with him being pressured without a blitz this year, which was the ninth-highest percentage in football. However, Denver Broncos defensive coordinator Wade Phillips loves to bring extra rushers.

Footballguys view: The Broncos sent extra blitzers (five or more) after the quarterback on 41.7 percent of opponent's dropbacks in 2015. That's the 4th-highest rate in the league. The Broncos were successful creating pressure without blitzing, too, as they allowed an opponent's QBR of just 8.7 in those situations this year. They also created pressure in those situations 19.2% of opposing team dropbacks, which ranked sixth in the league.

Dolphins | Lamar Miller will enter free agency    Fri Jan 22, 05:28 PM

Miami Dolphins impending unrestricted free-agent RB Lamar Miller will enter free agency this offseason, and he believes the fit with any team is the most important when considering his options. He wants to choose a team that is a good fit in scheme and opportunity. Miller finished 2015 with 872 rushing yards and 4.5 yards per carry.

Footballguys view: Miller is going to be one of the hottest running backs on what should be a saturated market. Even though he was used more over the last two years, we still think the Dolphins didn't use him enough. Any team in need of a starting running back should be interested in Miller. The best could be yet to come with the impending free agent.

Denver Broncos QB Peyton Manning (foot) fully participated in practice Friday, Jan. 22, and is listed as probable for the AFC Championship game against the New England Patriots Sunday, Jan. 24.

Footballguys view: He's not going to miss this game. If the foot becomes a problem and the Broncos are struggling, we wouldn't be surprised to see Brock Osweiler inserted as an emergency. It's win-or-go-home in this game, and the Broncos have to get past the current Super Bowl Champion New England Patriots to make it to Super Bowl 50.

Arizona Cardinals RB David Johnson (toe) fully participated in practice Friday, Jan. 22, and is listed as probable for the NFC Championship game against the Carolina Panthers Sunday, Jan. 24.

Footballguys view: Toe injuries are complicated, and they can slow down running backs. We could see Johnson bottled up on the ground by the Panthers defense, but he's a dangerous receiver who could do most of his damage as a pass-catcher.
