Jets | Muhammad Wilkerson may go on PUP list    Sat Jul 16, 09:49 AM

New York Jets DE Muhammad Wilkerson (leg) likely will begin training camp on the Physically Unable to Perform list because the team wants to be cautious with him since he is returning from a broken leg. The Jets want to make sure he will be ready for the start of the regular season.

Footballguys view: Camp PUP is no big deal--unlike the PUP list to start the regular season. If he's on the list to start camp, the Jets can decide to activate him at any time. We should not only see him on PUP to start training camp, but don't expect Wilkerson to get much playing time in the preseason either.

Giants | Logan Thomas may not make team    Sat Jul 16, 09:45 AM

New York Giants QB Logan Thomas may not make the 53-man roster if the team decides to keep only two quarterbacks on their final roster.

Footballguys view: Thomas is athletic and has a rocket arm, but he struggles to throw it in the ocean standing on the beach. His inconsistent accuracy never got better in college at Virginia Tech, and that problem has plagued him in the pros.

Chiefs | Kansas City still wants Eric Berry     Sat Jul 16, 12:49 AM

Kansas City Chiefs SS Eric Berry will play this season on a one-year deal, but general manager John Dorsey is hopeful that an extension beyond 2017 can be reached sometime next season.

Footballguys view: We're all Berry matter the team affiliation. He beat cancer, and Berry is an inspiration to all. It's a bit of a surprise that the Chiefs didn't find a way to get something done. We'll see if the two sides can work something out during the year.

49ers | DeAndre Smelter better after sitting out    Sat Jul 16, 12:21 AM

San Francisco 49ers WR DeAndre Smelter said he benefitted from sitting out and rehabbing his knee last year because he was able to observe and learn from WR Torrey Smith and WR Anquan Boldin.

Footballguys view: A fourth-round pick out of Georgia Tech last year, Smelter has the toughness to make difficult catches over the middle of the field. He can create separation with football savvy, and Smelter is a force to be dealt with after the catch. We'll see if he can regain his speed and quickness after returning from his knee injury. Smelter also needs to become more familiar with the full route tree after running a limited route tree for the Yellow Jackets.

Lions | Tighter snap count for Haloti Ngata?    Sat Jul 16, 12:16 AM

Detroit Lions DT Haloti Ngata hasn't played a full 16-game schedule since 2011, and beat writer Dave Birkett believes the Lions need to monitor Ngata's snap count in 2016 in order to keep him healthy and productive.

Footballguys view: That's a smart move for the Lions. He played 565 snaps for the Lions last year in 14 games. That number should be much lower that that in 2016.

Cowboys | Jack Crawford to contribute early    Fri Jul 15, 10:00 PM

Dallas Cowboys DE Jack Crawford is expected to pick up additional snaps at defensive tackle early in the year as DT Tyrone Crawford moves outside in place of DE Demarcus Lawrence and DE Randy Gregory, who will both be serving suspensions to start the year.

Footballguys view: It's all hands on deck for the Cowboys defensive line. We hope they don't suffer any injuries at the position in training camp as they're already incredibly thin.

Raiders | Karl Joseph making most of downtime    Fri Jul 15, 09:56 PM

Oakland Raiders SS Karl Joseph (knee) said he is eager to be back on the field but has been using the downtime to learn the playbook and work on the mental aspect of his game.

Footballguys view: Joseph was one of our favorite rookies in this class. He plays with little regard for his personal safety. The best pro comparison for Joseph's game is that he plays a little like a combination of Broncos' safeties T.J. Ward and Darian Stewart. Joseph is a physical player who can be intimidating close to the line of scrimmage, but he also has the ability to turn and cover down the field.

Colts | Healthy teammates to help Frank Gore    Fri Jul 15, 09:40 PM

Indianapolis Colts RB Frank Gore's yards per carry fell from 4.1 to 3.5 when QB Andrew Luck was out of the lineup, and he averaged just 2.7 yards per carry in the three games OT Anthony Castonzo missed.

Footballguys view: Luck is back, and the Colts spent most of the offseason working to upgrade the offensive line. Both should help Gore perform better in 2016. Consider him a RB3--and a consistent one at that--in any fantasy league format.

Dolphins | Mixed review for Thomas Duarte     Fri Jul 15, 09:27 PM

Miami Dolphins TE Thomas Duarte has impressed head coach Adam Gase with his skills as a receiver, but Gase said he will have to wait until padded practices in training camp to gauge his skills as a blocker.

Footballguys view: A super-sized WR, Duarte has drawn comparisons in the scouting community to Jordan Reed (Washington). Fantasy owners certainly need to monitor his progress...especially in the Gase (super TE-friendly) system. He's the Dolphins third-string TE behind starter Jordan Cameron and primary backup Dion Sims.

Redskins | DeAngelo Hall excited for new gig    Fri Jul 15, 09:15 PM

Washington Redskins S DeAngelo Hall said he is looking forward to his move to full-time safety in 2016 and believes he will 'put a little fear' in opposing quarterbacks because of his ability to create turnovers.

Footballguys view: Hall has the experience to roam the field and monitor where QBs are going with the ball. The starter opposite of him is going to be worked out in training camp, but don't be surprised if free agent addition David Bruton wins the job.

Colts | Frank Gore training hard    Fri Jul 15, 09:11 PM

Indianapolis Colts RB Frank Gore said he hears the naysayers who question if he can produce at his age, and he uses the doubters as motivation to 'attack' his training. 'I try to do two workouts three times a week,' Gore said. '(In the second workouts), I do more agility, jump cuts, moves, working my feet in small spaces. Just trying to imitate like when I'm in the hole.'

Footballguys view: Gore is consistent and he should play a large role on the Colts (likely improved) offense. The upgraded offensive line not only will help protect QB Andrew Luck better this year, but they'll also be able to blast open larger holes for Gore. We like him as a RB3 this year, and his current ADP is RB29 (6.12) in 12-team PPR leagues.

Jaguars | Jordan Tripp has chance to make team    Fri Jul 15, 08:31 PM

Jacksonville Jaguars LB Jordan Tripp should have a good chance to earn a spot on the 53-man roster because he can play all three linebacker spots and can be used on all four special teams units.

Footballguys view: Tripp is one of the more versatile players on the roster, so we feel his roster spot is secure. He finds the ball quickly and rarely takes false steps when diagnosing a play.

Jaguars | Myles Jack may see time at OLB    Fri Jul 15, 08:30 PM

Jacksonville Jaguars LB Myles Jack worked at middle linebacker during offseason workouts but could receive playing time at strongside linebacker during the season. Jack will be on the field when the team is in their nickel and dime packages.

Footballguys view: Jack can do whatever the Jaguars want him to do. He's got high football intelligence, the speed to capture most any opponent and the agility to cover consistently.

Texans | Ra'Zahn Howard looking to drop weight    Fri Jul 15, 08:22 PM

Houston Texans DT Ra'Zahn Howard weighed 325 at his Pro Day but now weighs 317 pounds. He said his goal is to be around 310 pounds once training camp begins.

Footballguys view: Howard went undrafted in the 2016 Supplemental Draft, but the Texans were quick to add him after that. He's a powerful player who did a good job of controlling the point of attack in college for Purdue. Howard struggles to get consistent penetration, but at 325 pounds he can move well laterally and chase down plays that go away from him. He was a starter in college, but he was rotated on and off the field. He should be a rotational player if he makes the Texans 53-man roster.

Raiders | David Amerson receives extension    Fri Jul 15, 05:47 PM

Oakland Raiders CB David Amerson signed a four-year contract extension Friday, July 15, worth $38 million. The deal includes around $18 million in guaranteed money.

Footballguys view: Amerson gets a nice raise here, and it further emphasizes the strong defense the Raiders have assembled. We'll see free agent addition Sean Smith start opposite Amerson in 2016, and it could be quite difficult to move the ball through the air against this secondary...especially with that pass-rush up front.

Bills | Kolby Listenbee should be ready for camp    Fri Jul 15, 05:21 PM

Buffalo Bills WR Kolby Listenbee (hernia) was limited during offseason workouts because he is recovering from hernia surgery but should be ready for the start of training camp.

Footballguys view: A sixth-round pick out of TCU, Listenbee is a deep threat who averaged 19 yards per catch in 2015. He can get deep and tracks the ball well over his shoulder. We like him in dynasty leagues, but re-draft owners know that this passing game isn't going to do much and outside of Sammy Watkins there's no fantasy-relevant Bills WR.

Saints | Sheldon Rankins may play every down    Fri Jul 15, 04:52 PM

New Orleans Saints DT Sheldon Rankins performed well during the team's minicamp this offseason and should have a chance to be on the field for all three downs in 2016.

Footballguys view: The Saints have made changed to the defense that should allow Rankins to perform to the best of his abilities. They're going to ask him to get upfield quickly and penetrate the pocket with his quickness and strength. Rankins is not the biggest defensive tackle, but a bit undersized at 299 pounds they won't ask him to cover two gaps and take on multiple blockers.

Jets | Muhammad Wilkerson receives new deal    Fri Jul 15, 04:51 PM

Updating a previous report, New York Jets DE Muhammad Wilkerson did sign a five-year deal with the Jets Friday, July 15, worth $86 million. The deal includes $37 million guaranteed and $54 million in the first three years.

Footballguys view: It was a bit of a surprise move to be honest. All signs were pointing to no deal, but the two sides were able to get something done right before the deadline. Wilkerson had not participated during the offseason camps and there was a belief that he would hold out into training camp and perhaps even the regular season. Now, Wilkerson gets the long-term deal he wants and the Jets will continue to have one of the best defensive lines in the league.

Bills | Reggie Bush an option for Buffalo?    Fri Jul 15, 04:24 PM

Free-agent RB Reggie Bush (49ers) could be an option for the Buffalo Bills because of RB Karlos Williams' four-game suspension, in the opinion of's Jason La Canfora.

Footballguys view: We're not crazy about this idea, but the Bills may want to add a veteran back. We like rookie Jonathan Williams as a player all dynasty owners need to add or at least monitor. Add in veteran Mike Gillislee, and the Bills go four deep at the position (when Karlos Williams is not suspended).

Rams | Trumaine Johnson unable to land new deal    Fri Jul 15, 04:22 PM

Los Angeles Rams CB Trumaine Johnson did not receive a long-term deal Friday, July 15, and will play under the one-year franchise tag.

Footballguys view: There was no movement in this situation, so the fact Johnson didn't get a long-term deal was not a surprise. He'll play this season under the one-year franchise tag with a cap number of $13.9 million.

Bears | No long-term deal for Alshon Jeffery    Fri Jul 15, 04:12 PM

Chicago Bears WR Alshon Jeffery did not receive a long-term deal Friday, July 15, and will play under the one-year franchise tag.

Footballguys view: Jeffery has already signed his franchise tender, so there's no threat of a holdout. He'll play this season with a one-year price tag of $14.5 million. Last year, Jeffery played in only nine games. With a full 16-game season (and the likely production that comes with that), we could see Jeffery get a payday similar to what Demaryius Thomas (Broncos) and Dez Bryant (Cowboys) got last year.

49ers | Aaron Lynch suspended    Fri Jul 15, 04:03 PM

San Francisco 49ers LB Aaron Lynch has been suspended for the first four games of the 2016 season for violating the NFL's substance abuse policy.

Footballguys view: It's a blow to the 49ers defense as Lynch is a player that can consistently create pressure (62 QB pressures in 2015) on opposing QBs. Lynch will be able to return in Week 5 against the Cardinals.

Redskins | Washington made offer to Kirk Cousins    Fri Jul 15, 03:42 PM

Washington Redskins QB Kirk Cousins has received an offer from the Redskins worth $16 million per season with $24 million in guaranteed money. Cousins will play under the franchise tag in 2016 for $20 million.

Footballguys view: Cousins signed his franchise tag months ago, and he's ready to gamble on himself. If he has another strong season as a starter for Washington, then he could perhaps secure a deal that pays him around $20 million annually.

NFL | Ray Rice says window is closing    Fri Jul 15, 03:37 PM

Free-agent RB Ray Rice (Ravens) said he still hopes to play in the NFL but understands that his window to play again is closing because of his age and his off-field incident.

Footballguys view: We'd be shocked if any team took a chance on Rice at this point in his career. His playing days in the NFL are likely done.

Saints | New Orleans not pushing for Anquan Boldin    Fri Jul 15, 03:15 PM

Updating a previous report, free-agent WR Anquan Boldin (49ers) received some interest from the New Orleans Saints earlier in the offseason, but the team never made him an offer and are not pushing to sign him at this point, according to a source.

Footballguys view: We're interested to see where Boldin lands. The veteran WR showed last year with the 49ers that he's not washed up--yet. He may not be what he used to be, but Boldin has plenty of experience and can be more than just a 'depth' player. The Saints have a young group of WRs behind Brandin Cooks, so perhaps they'll explore adding Boldin later.

Chiefs | No deal for Eric Berry    Fri Jul 15, 03:11 PM

Kansas City Chiefs SS Eric Berry will not agree to a long-term deal before the deadline Friday, July 15, according to a source.

Footballguys view: For the last week, we've seen reports that indicated nothing was going to get done. Berry is a player we can all cheer for since he beat cancer. The team just didn't have the cap space to make it happen, so Berry will play under the $10.8 million franchise tender in 2016.

Bills | Jonathan Williams arrested    Fri Jul 15, 03:05 PM

Buffalo Bills RB Jonathan Williams was arrested Thursday, July 14, and has been charged with driving while intoxicated.

Footballguys view: We like the rookie back, but this is just unacceptable. The legal process will have to play its course before the league takes any action. With Karlos Williams out of shape and suspended for the first four games of the year, Jonathan Williams has a chance to win the primary backup job behind LeSean McCoy.

Bills | Karlos Williams suspended four games    Fri Jul 15, 03:03 PM

Buffalo Bills RB Karlos Williams has been suspended for the first four games of the 2016 season for violating the NFL's substance abuse policy.

Footballguys view: It hasn't been a good offseason for Williams. He was already in the doghouse as he's about 20 to 25 pounds overweight, and now Williams will miss the first month of the season. Williams can practice during training camp, and he can play with the team in the preseason. Once the regular season begins, Williams has to stay away from the facility but he's eligible to return in Week 5 against the Rams.

Broncos | Von Miller agrees to deal    Fri Jul 15, 02:30 PM

Denver Broncos LB Von Miller agreed to a six-year, $114.5 million deal Friday, July 15, a person familiar with the deal told KUSA's Mike Klis. The person spoke on condition of anonymity because the deal had not yet been announced.

Footballguys view: The Broncos have paid a premium price for a premium player. Miller is arguably the best pass-rusher in the game, and there's no doubt the Broncos don't win Super Bowl 50 last year without him. The team put a record (for a defensive player) $70 million in the deal as well. With Miller in the second year of the devastating Wade Phillips' defense, the Broncos are still in a playoff/Super Bowl window in 2016.

Patriots | Tom Brady ends appeal    Fri Jul 15, 01:06 PM

New England Patriots QB Tom Brady announced he will have no further action with the legal process against the NFL in appealing his four-game suspension.

Broncos | Von Miller closing in on deal    Fri Jul 15, 12:18 PM

Updating an ongoing story, Denver Broncos LB Von Miller is closing in on a deal Friday, July 15, for six years and $114 million with $70 million fully guaranteed by March 2018.

Footballguys view: Miller's contract will set a new high for defensive players, and he'll be the highest-paid non-QB in the NFL. It's a premium price, but one that Miller is worth as the MVP of the league's greatest defense.

Chiefs | Little progress made with Eric Berry    Fri Jul 15, 08:26 AM

Kansas City Chiefs SS Eric Berry made very little progress in contract talks Thursday, July 14, and it's unlikely a long-term deal gets done Friday, July 15.

Footballguys view: We're a bit surprised more hasn't been done here. Berry will have to play on the one-year franchise tender, and he'll have a price tag in 2016 of $10.8 million in 2016.

Broncos | Von Miller expected to ink extension    Fri Jul 15, 08:26 AM

Denver Broncos LB Von Miller is expected to accept a six-year, $114.5 million extension with $70 million in guarantees before the deadline Friday, July 15. In average annual value and total guaranteed dollars, Miller will become the highest-paid defensive player in NFL history, and his contract will be the richest at any position other than quarterback.

Footballguys view: Miller went nuts during the Broncos playoff run last year, and he capped things off with a Super Bowl championship and MVP trophy. The Broncos now are going to play a premium price tag for a premium player that keeps them in the Super Bowl conversation in 2016.

NFL | LaMarr Woodley awaiting a call    Fri Jul 15, 02:11 AM

Free-agent LB LaMarr Woodley (Cardinals) said Thursday, July 14, he'll be ready if a team calls him with interest. 'Yeah, I'm staying in shape, but the thing is, I've put myself in a situation where I've been hurt these past few years, so I don't really control my situation right now,' Woodley said. 'I still can go out there and play at a high level. I just have to be out there on the field to go out there and play at a high level and not just be used for certain situations as far as going out there stopping the run.'

Footballguys view: Woodley's last two seasons have ended on I.R. and there may not be much left for him to contribute in the NFL. He's appeared in 16 games over the last two years, but he hasn't played a full 16-game season since 2010. Most around the league consider him to be washed up at this point in his career.

Titans | Justin Hunter's roster spot safe?    Fri Jul 15, 12:40 AM

Tennessee Titans WR Justin Hunter will likely make the 53-man roster because of his athleticism and potential, according to beat writer Terry McCormick.

Footballguys view: All that potential is going to be wasted if he doesn't actually use it and at some point we expect the Titans to get sick of waiting for it to emerge. With Dorial Green-Beckham and Rishard Matthews around, talent is not going to be enough. While Hunter teases you on occasion, he's not worth rostering until he shows anything resembling consistency.

Titans | Kendall Wright needs to improve    Fri Jul 15, 12:35 AM

Tennessee Titans WR Kendall Wright has been told he needs to improve his route running and is expected to be used as a slot receiver.

Footballguys view: Wright is one of the better receivers on a suddenly crowded roster. That said, he sort of did what he wanted to during past seasons and if he won't run the route he's supposed to when he's supposed to, Dorial Green-Beckham, Harry Douglas, and Rishard Matthews are right behind him, waiting. With this particular offense and some of his issues, we think Wright is a WR5/WR6 at best.

Denver Broncos WR Demaryius Thomas said he is 'feeling great' heading into training camp and will 'for sure' have a better year after dealing with drops last season.

Footballguys view: We think this could be a bounce back season for Thomas, but the quarterback situation does give us pause. In the end though, Thomas is his own worst enemy and if he can get the drops under control he's a decent WR1 regardless of who is throwing the ball.

Free-agent WR Rashaun Simonise signed with the Cincinnati Bengals Thursday, July 14.

Footballguys view: There's room for someone to step up with Mohamed Sanu and Marvin Jones out of the building, but we're betting it's rookie Tyler Sharpe, not Simonise. The University of Calgary standout has a good size/speed combination, and he's got the body control to make difficult catches near the sideline. The rookie is only worth monitoring in the deepest of deep dynasty leagues.

Jets | Muhammad Wilkerson, Jets far apart    Thu Jul 14, 05:28 PM

New York Jets DE Muhammad Wilkerson and the Jets are still far apart in their long-term contract negotiations. The deadline for franchise tagged players to sign a long-term deal is Friday, July 15. If a deal is not done, Wilkerson would have to play the 2016 season under the franchise tag. Wilkerson would earn $15.701 million this year with the tag. It's also possible, according to's Darryl Slater, that Wilkerson could also be tagged next year.

Footballguys view: Wilkerson will play, but under the tag. The simple truth is the Jets lack the room to make him a good offer this year or next. Wilkerson will play because he stands to make more money in free agency if he proves he is healthy. We may see more Leonard Williams and Sheldon Richardson in Wilkerson's spot by the end of the season.

Broncos | Denver still hopeful for Von Miller    Thu Jul 14, 04:32 PM

Denver Broncos LB Von Miller is still without a long-term contract just one day before the deadline, Friday, July 15, but the Broncos remain hopeful that they can ink their star pass-rusher as talks have become more private. Denver believes a lot of progress has been made, according to a source, although any updates regarding negotiations have not been leaked by either side.

Footballguys view: It seems as though the Broncos have laid out their offer and it's up to Miller to take it or not. If Miller didn't and then chose to sit out the season, Shane Ray would have to step up to either take Miller's place at strong side linebacker or DeMarcus Ware's if the veteran moved over to SLB instead. In that case, how big a hit the defense would take would depend on how ready for prime time the second year Ray is.

Saints | Anquan Boldin of interest to Saints    Thu Jul 14, 04:08 PM

Free-agent WR Anquan Boldin (49ers) has been pursued the strongest by the New Orleans Saints, according to a source. Boldin thinks highly of Saints wide receivers coach John Morton, who coached him with the San Francisco 49ers.

Footballguys view: This wouldn't help many Fantasy GMs as Boldin would get buried behind Brandin Cooks, Willie Snead and rookie Micheal Thomas. Boldin's 789 yards were solid considering what a disaster the 2015 49ers were, but that doesn't mean he'd find many targets in a crowded offense.
