Falcons | Jake Matthews moves to left side    Mon Aug 18, 01:30 PM

The Atlanta Falcons have moved OT Jake Matthews to left tackle because of the season-ending injury to OT Sam Baker (knee). Matthews said he is comfortable playing either tackle spot.

Footballguys view: Matthews can be a better left tackle than Baker was--eventually. There will be a bit of a learning curve for the youngster.

Rams | Tre Mason struggling with pass protection    Mon Aug 18, 01:20 PM

St. Louis Rams RB Tre Mason still has to work on becoming a better pass blocker after he allowed two sacks in the second preseason game, according to head coach Jeff Fisher. 'Yeah, I think that's one of the biggest challenges for the position,' Fisher said. 'To learn how to play without the football. Guys have run skills, can carry the ball and run, and do those kind of things. But it's playing without the football. It's protection. Tre needs to keep working on it.'

Footballguys view: He's not going to get much playing time if he can't protect the passer. Fantasy owners need to watch his progress closely here. Zac Stacy will continue to be the featured back for the Rams in 2014.

Raiders | Coach impressed with Darren McFadden    Mon Aug 18, 01:04 PM

Oakland Raiders RB Darren McFadden has performed well during training camp and shown some explosiveness during his runs, according to head coach Dennis Allen. 'I think Darren is probably running the ball as well as I've seen him run it since I've been here. I think he's probably more explosive than I've seen him since I've been here. I think part of that is that he's remained healthy throughout the offseason, throughout training camp. There haven't been any kind of nicks or nagging little deals that have slowed him down. So, hopefully that trend will continue because I've seen a lot of positives in what he's done in the running game,' Allen said.

Footballguys view: McFadden is the ultimate tease. He's incredibly talented but rarely healthy. We'll see how he works with Maurice Jones-Drew in the team's RBBC.

Chiefs | Jamaal Charles injury update    Mon Aug 18, 12:16 PM

Updating a previous report, Kansas City Chiefs RB Jamaal Charles (foot) suffered a bruised foot when he twisted it after practice, according to head coach Andy Reid. Charles sat out of the Week 2 preseason game versus the Carolina Panthers as a precautionary measure, Reid said.

Footballguys view: This sounds like a minor issue for Charles. Fantasy owners should still be taking him off the board with the first or second overall pick in their fantasy drafts.

Eagles | Two sitting    Mon Aug 18, 11:53 AM

Philadelphia Eagles RB Chris Polk (hamstring) and WR Brad Smith (undisclosed) are out of practice Monday, Aug. 18.

Footballguys view: Polk has the talent to produce in the NFL, but he's got to stay healthy. Chronic shoulder problems in college at Washington caused him to go undrafted in 2012. We'll have to wait and see how long this hamstring problem lingers.

Eagles | Riley Cooper practicing    Mon Aug 18, 11:48 AM

Philadelphia Eagles WR Riley Cooper (foot) is practicing again Monday, Aug. 18.

Footballguys view: Good news for the Eagles here. Both Cooper and Jeremy Maclin have been banged up this preseason, leading to a larger opportunity for rookie Jordan Matthews. We'll see if Cooper can play in the dress rehearsal for the regular season aka Week 3 of the preseason.

Buccaneers | Mike Evans named starter    Mon Aug 18, 10:21 AM

Tampa Bay Buccaneers WR Mike Evans was named a starter, alongside WRs Vincent Jackson and Chris Owusu, by head coach Lovie Smith. Owusu will start in the slot.

Footballguys view: Absolutely zero surprise here. Evans was selected in the first round to be a starter, and he has the natural ability to be one of the best receivers in the game today. It will be exciting to watch him start opposite Vincent Jackson on Sundays.

Chiefs | Travis Kelce impressing    Mon Aug 18, 09:52 AM

Kansas City Chiefs TE Travis Kelce caught a 43-yard touchdown strike in the second preseason game over the weekend. He has six catches for 136 yards on seven targets this preseason.

Footballguys view: Message! Kelce has Gronkowski-like talent, and he's been impressing throughout camp and into the preseason. Fantasy owners can pick up this value play at TE17 (13.09) in 12-team PPR leagues. The Chiefs lack weapons outside of Jamaal Charles and Dwayne Bowe (if he cares). Kelce could be in for a role that makes him a low-end TE1 for fantasy owners.

Steelers | Ryan Shazier active in preseason game    Mon Aug 18, 09:43 AM

Pittsburgh Steelers LB Ryan Shazier had 11 tackles and an interception in less than two quarters of playing time in the second preseason game Sunday, Aug. 17.

Footballguys view: The talk of Steelers camp has been Shazier. He can fly across the football field, and he arrives at the play with natural violence. The Steelers have missed on some defensive picks in recent years, but Shazier looks like a stud.

Eagles | Open to trade offers on Mark Sanchez    Mon Aug 18, 02:37 AM

Philadelphia Eagles coach Chip Kelly has told reporters he would be open to trade offers for QB Mark Sanchez, presumably to let Sanchez have a chance at the No. 1 job with another team. Kelly also added that does not mean Sanchez will be dealt, as they need his depth-chart experience behind QB Nick Foles, but the team is always looking to improve.

Footballguys view: We can't imagine any team lighting up the phone lines to acquire Mark Sanchez. The Eagles could (should) keep him around as valuable veteran depth behind Foles. The guys behind Sanzhez (Matt Barkley, G.J. Kinne) lack experience and talent.

Rams | Chris Givens falls down depth chart    Mon Aug 18, 02:31 AM

St. Louis Rams WR Chris Givens has been surpassed on the depth chart by WRs Kenny Britt, Tavon Austin, Stedman Bailey and Brian Quick, and Givens may be a bubble in terms of final roster cuts.

Footballguys view: As a rookie in 2012, Givens was a premiere deep target for the Rams and his career looked promising. Say it with me everybody--things change pretty quickly around here. It wouldn't shock us to see Givens released by the Rams if he doesn't start performing better in camp and the preseason.

Bills | Two in roster danger    Mon Aug 18, 02:12 AM

Buffalo Bills QB Thaddeus Lewis and DL Alan Branch may be in danger of losing their spots on the roster. Coach Doug Marrone has been critical of Lewis' play, which has been way down from last season, and Branch failed a conditioning test before reporting to camp.

Footballguys view: We'll see if Lewis can turn things around the rest of the preseason. The Bills lack quality depth behind starter E.J. Manuel. Jeff Tuel and Dennis Dixon are the only other players at quarterback in Bills camp.

Steelers | Teammate impressed with Ryan Shazier    Mon Aug 18, 01:04 AM

Pittsburgh Steelers LB Ryan Shazier did well in pass coverage and tackling during the second preseason game, according to LB Lawrence Timmons. He has all the talent and the intangibles you want in an inside linebacker.'

Texans | Case Keenum still in lead for No. 2 QB job    Mon Aug 18, 12:57 AM

Houston Texans QB Case Keenum still has a lead over QB Tom Savage for the No. 2 quarterback job even though he has been inconsistent during training camp.

Footballguys view: Remember when some were touting Savage as a first-round pick? Savage has a big arm, but his accuracy needs a ton of work. His play also breaks down under pressure. Our very own Cecil Lammey will be watching this battle in practice this week as the Texans and Broncos are holding joint practices at Dove Valley before their Week 3 preseason game.

Saints | Drew Brees expects to play in preseason game    Mon Aug 18, 12:52 AM

Updating a previous report, New Orleans Saints QB Drew Brees (oblique) said he definitely plans to play in the third preseason game.

Footballguys view: We'll feel better about Brees when we see him in action. Oblique injuries are painful, and they can alter a quarterback's mechanics. We imagine that Brees will look like his old self, but we're certainly going to be monitoring the situation.

Rams | Barrett Jones undergoes surgery    Mon Aug 18, 12:06 AM

St. Louis Rams C Barrett Jones (back) will miss the rest of the preseason and possibly some time during the regular season because of back surgery, according to head coach Jeff Fisher. 'Barrett is going to be weeks away,' Fisher said. 'Barrett has had some minor surgery on his back so he will not participate in the preseason. Beyond that, I don't know.'

Broncos | Montee Ball could return to practice    Sun Aug 17, 11:51 PM

Denver Broncos RB Montee Ball (appendix) is making good progress and said there is a chance he could return to practice at some point this week.

Footballguys view: The Broncos are holding joint practices with the Houston Texans this week. Ball has been working off to the side as he continues to recover from his recent appendectomy. We don't think there's any reason to rush him back into the lineup. There's a chance we could see him in Week 3 of the preseason, but perhaps holding him out until Week 1 of the regular season would be best.

Jaguars | Cecil Shorts expected to play in preseason game    Sun Aug 17, 11:04 PM

Jacksonville Jaguars WR Cecil Shorts (hamstring) is expected to start in the third preseason game unless he suffers a setback during practice this week, according to head coach Gus Bradley.

Footballguys view: Hamstring injuries are known to linger if not treated properly. Shorts has been getting time off to deal with this injury, and it will be good to see him back out on the field. His current ADP has suffered because of the injury. Shorts is coming off the board at WR50 (11.01) in 12-team PPR leagues.

Patriots | Justin Jones re-signed    Sun Aug 17, 10:51 PM

The New England Patriots have re-signed free-agent TE Justin Jones. Terms of the contract were not disclosed.

Footballguys view: Jones is a towering tight end who lacks great athleticism but could find a spot on a team that loves to cycle through tight end depth in attempts to rekindle the two tight end set look they lost when Aaron Hernandez's career ended abruptly.
