Jets | Rex Ryan calls 2014 a transition year    Sat Jul 19, 09:49 AM

New York Jets head coach Rex Ryan thinks his team can do special things in 2014, but also called this season a transition year. Ryan understands people not seeing that right now. "What they're missing is -- and this isn't their fault -- is they don't see what I see in the building every day," Ryan said. "I think it's a transition year, but we're going to bring it to another level. I know where I want this team to go and that's where I expect this team to go. So, you know, are we a better team? Dang right. . . . That may be a fact that we're rebuilding this team, but by no means does that mean that I don't expect to improve on where we were."

Footballguys view: We'll call 2014 a make-or-break year for Ryan. He needs to win or else the team might look for a next coach next season. Ryan is putting his faith in either Geno Smith or Michael Vick as the starting quarterback--good luck with that.

Vikings | Two in contention for slot WR job    Fri Jul 18, 11:22 PM

Minnesota Vikings WRs Jarius Wright and Jerome Simpson are expected to compete for the slot receiver job during training camp.

Footballguys view: We'd like to see more of Wright. He had a couple of good games last year, including a four catch, 95 yard performance against the Eagles in Week 15. Wright is quicker and more explosive than Simpson, and he's a much more dangerous receiver after the catch.

Broncos | Tony Carter expected to be on bubble    Fri Jul 18, 11:21 PM

Denver Broncos CB Tony Carter is expected to be on the roster bubble during training camp.

Footballguys view: The Broncos have an improved secondary, and adding players like Aqib Talib and Bradley Roby may push Carter off the depth chart. The veteran is a risk taker who can bait quarterbacks into bad throws. However, Carter can get burned with his aggressive style. If he makes the team, it will be as the fifth corner on the depth chart.

Broncos | Will Montgomery could push for starting job    Fri Jul 18, 11:16 PM

Denver Broncos C Will Montgomery may push C Manuel Ramirez for the starting center job during training camp.

Footballguys view: Ramirez won the starting center job last year, and he could beat out Montgomery in training camp. He'll enter camp as the starter, and we'll see if Montgomery gets any time with the first team early in August.

Jaguars | Stephen Morris could be practice squad candidate    Fri Jul 18, 11:09 PM

Jacksonville Jaguars QB Stephen Morris likely will be a candidate for the practice squad if he does not make the final roster.

Footballguys view: Morris has amazing athletic ability. He looks good as a passer when there's no pressure, but his game falls apart when the heat is on. Morris has the athleticism and arm strength to be a good quarterback, but he must improve the consistency to his game.

Redskins | Brandon Jenkins may be on bubble    Fri Jul 18, 09:55 PM

Washington Redskins LB Brandon Jenkins may be on the roster bubble during training camp even though outside linebackers coach Brian Baker said Jenkins was the most improved player among the linebackers. Jenkins will have to show he can play well against the run and be more fluid in pass coverage. He likely will need to show he can contribute on special teams to have a decent chance to make the roster.

Giants | Ryan Nassib top candidate for No. 2 QB job    Fri Jul 18, 09:42 PM

New York Giants QB Ryan Nassib is entering training camp as the leading candidate for the No. 2 quarterback job and probably will have to really struggle to lose the job to QB Curtis Painter.

Footballguys view: Nassib is a second-year quarterback the Giants are hoping to develop as a potential starter in the future. He spins a nice football, but Nassib will have to beat out the veteran Painter to be the primary backup behind Eli Manning. The Giants are unlikely to keep three quarterbacks on the roster this year.

Ravens | Jeremy Butler has edge for No. 5 WR spot    Fri Jul 18, 08:59 PM

Baltimore Ravens WR Jeremy Butler appears to have an edge for the No. 5 wide receiver job entering training camp because of his impressive performance during offseason workouts but may have to compete with WRs Michael Campanaro, Deonte Thompson and LaQuan Williams for the roster spot. It is not known if the team will keep five or six wide receivers on their final roster.

Dolphins | Three WRs may compete for one spot    Fri Jul 18, 08:40 PM

Miami Dolphins WRs Damian Williams, Armon Binns and Matt Hazel may compete for one roster spot during training camp.

Footballguys view: Binns might have the most upside here (although there's little fantasy value to be mined). He has a large frame and the wingspan to be a red-zone threat. Williams has good length and can track passes deep. Hazel is a rookie (sixth-round pick) with the ability to get open quickly on underneath routes.

Patriots | Rob Gronkowski not sure if he will go on PUP list    Fri Jul 18, 08:32 PM

New England Patriots TE Rob Gronkowski (knee) said he is not sure if he will begin training camp on the Physically Unable to Perform list.

Footballguys view: It doesn't matter if he's on the PUP or not. The Patriots are going to take it easy on Gronkowski as he comes back from this injury. If healthy, Gronkowski is easily a top-3 fantasy tight end.

Minnesota Vikings special teams coordinator Mike Priefer has been suspended three games by the team for making offensive and insensitive homophobic remarks in the presence of former P Chris Kluwe.   Dolphins | Two competing for No. 3 QB job    Fri Jul 18, 08:24 PM

Miami Dolphins QB Pat Devlin appears to have a slight edge over QB Brock Jensen for the No. 3 quarterback job entering training camp because of his experience. Neither player stood out during offseason workouts.

Footballguys view: Jensen was a gritty winner at North Dakota State, and the rookie plays with a ton of heart. He led the North Dakota State Bison to three consecutive national championships (2011-2013) in the Missouri Valley Football Conference. Devlin was a standout during his time in college at Delaware, but he hasn't looked very good during the preseason with the Dolphins over the last few years.

NFL | Adam Carriker cleared    Fri Jul 18, 08:03 PM

Free-agent DT Adam Carriker (quadriceps) has recovered from his quadriceps injury and has been cleared to practice.

Footballguys view: It's been a long time since Carriker has played in the NFL. He's missed 30 consecutive games, but could find some team interested in a veteran pass-rusher for the right price. Carriker might have to wait until after Week 1 of the regular season. At that point, veteran salaries are not guaranteed for the year.

Bills | Unsure where Keith Rivers will start    Fri Jul 18, 07:24 PM

Bills | Taking things easy with Leodis McKelvin    Fri Jul 18, 07:19 PM

Buffalo Bills CB Leodis McKelvin (hip) was placed on the Physically Unable to Perform list because the team wants to ease him back into practice since he has been recovering from offseason hip surgery, according to general manager Doug Whaley.

Footballguys view: The Bills defense already took a gut punch earlier this offseason when linebacker Kiko Alonso went down with a knee injury. It's wise for them to take it easy on McKelvin as he works his way back.

Dolphins | Billy Turner signed    Fri Jul 18, 07:08 PM

Lions | Reese Wiggins claimed    Fri Jul 18, 07:05 PM

The Detroit Lions have claimed WR Reese Wiggins off waivers from the New England Patriots. The team also released WR Naaman Roosevelt.

Footballguys view: Wiggins has spent the last couple of months with the New England Patriots after he was added as an undrafted free agent out of East Carolina. During his career at ECU, Wiggins totaled 80 career catches for 1,012 yards and eight touchdowns. He's a camp body for the Lions, but he could impress enough to find a home on the practice squad.

49ers | Aldon Smith sentenced    Fri Jul 18, 05:36 PM

San Francisco 49ers LB Aldon Smith was sentenced to 12 days in jail for vehicle charges Friday, July 18.

Footballguys view: Smith is not actually going to serve any jail time. He can serve the time in a work release program, and he won't miss any playing time. Smith still faces discipline from the NFL for his off-field transgressions.

Packers | Aaron Rodgers feeling good    Fri Jul 18, 04:46 PM

Green Bay Packers QB Aaron Rodgers said his body has been feeling good to the point where he can keep his legs underneath him for a long time. Rodgers attributed his well-being to changes he's made off the field regarding his eating patterns.

Footballguys view: Rodgers will once again be one of the best fantasy quarterbacks you can draft. With a healthy Randall Cobb and new weapons like Davante Adams and Jared Abbrederis, the Packers will have a robust passing game in 2014. Rodgers has a current ADP of QB3 (3.01) in 12-team PPR leagues.

Houston Texans DE Jadeveon Clowney (hernia) wants to be cleared by Saturday, July 26 in order to participate in training camp. He is recovering from sports hernia surgery.

Footballguys view: The Texans are not going to rush the 2014 number one overall pick back until he's ready. Expect the team to take it easy on him so they'll have Clowney ready for Week 1 of the regular season.

Ravens | Terrency Cody placed on PUP list    Fri Jul 18, 03:07 PM

Baltimore Ravens DT Terrence Cody (hip) was placed on the team's physically unable to perform list. Cody underwent hip surgery this offseason.

Footballguys view: The camp PUP list is easy to come back from. Players can be activated from the list at any time in camp. Cody has been a disappointment as a pro, and he's in a make-or-break season in 2014.

Bears | Jay Cutler praised by head coach    Fri Jul 18, 02:59 PM

Chicago Bears QB Jay Cutler has impressed head coach Marc Trestman with how intelligent and selfless he's been to better the team. Trestman also said he's been impressed with Cutler's skillset and football smarts.

Footballguys view: Trestman and the Bears certainly believe in Cutler. They wouldn't have committed to a seven-year $126.7 million contract earlier this year. He's more comfortable in the second year of the Trestman offense, and that should lead to better production on the field.

New York Jets head coach Rex Ryan recently said he's confident the team will make the playoffs this season, adding that another 8-8 record would be a disappointment.

Footballguys view: This could be it for Ryan. He's in a make-or-break season with the Jets. If they don't make the playoffs and have a disappointing year, then we could see Ryan get bounced.
