Cardinals | Carson Palmer would understand drafting QB Wed Apr 16, 12:30 PM
Arizona Cardinals QB Carson Palmer said he would understand if the team selects a quarterback during the 2014 NFL Draft, because he knows the team has to think about its future. 'If you are in a position to draft the best player on your board, and that's the best position to be in as an organization, and (a quarterback) is the best player on the board, you are not only making your team better by creating competition but you are helping out the future,' Palmer said.
|Footballguys view: Palmer knows the score. He's in the twilight of his career, and the Cardinals need to find the next quarterback to groom behind him. There's a few big-armed quarterbacks who could interest the Cardinals in the draft. Players like Derek Carr, Zach Mettenberger or Tom Savage may be on their radar.|

Dolphins | Meet with Marqise Lee Wed Apr 16, 12:27 PM
The Miami Dolphins were scheduled to meet with Southern California WR Marqise Lee Tuesday, April 15.
|Footballguys view: Lee is a crisp route-runner, but he lacks elite speed. He'll catch passes, but too often body catches them. That leads to catches that aren't clean, bobbled, dropped or intercepted. He can gain separation with his guile, but lacks speed after the catch.|
Dolphins | Will meet with two small school prospects Wed Apr 16, 12:26 PM
The Miami Dolphins are scheduled to meet with Georgia State OL Ulrick John and Marist DE Terence Fede.Link to story
Rams | Attending Aaron Murray's pro day Wed Apr 16, 12:26 PM
St. Louis Rams director of player personnel Taylor Morton is attending the pro day of Georgia QB Aaron Murray Wednesday, April 16.
|Footballguys view: Murray is an interesting quarterback to watch at the pro level. He's a tough leader who can stand in the pocket, deliver the ball, and take a hit. Murray doesn't have a rocket arm, but it's strong enough to make all the throws required in the NFL. A torn ACL could keep him from contributing in 2014, but he has the upside to be a good backup with starting capability.|
Giants | One-year deal for Josh Freeman Wed Apr 16, 12:25 PM

Giants | Josh Freeman agrees to terms Wed Apr 16, 12:10 PM
The New York Giants have agreed to terms with free-agent QB Josh Freeman (Vikings). Terms of the contract were not disclosed.
|Footballguys view: Granpa Coughlin throwing us a curveball here. Freeman is not what you'd call disciplined, which is exact opposite of what you expect from Coughlin's players. We'll see if he can turn things around on his third chance in the NFL. Freeman will compete with second-year pro Ryan Nassib to be the backup behind Eli Manning.|

NFL | Michael Sam receiving interest Wed Apr 16, 12:10 PM
The Baltimore Ravens, New England Patriots, Atlanta Falcons, Indianapolis Colts, Cleveland Browns and New York Jets have shown the most interest in Missouri DE Michael Sam leading up to the 2014 NFL Draft.
|Footballguys view: Sam should be a late-round pick in the 2014 NFL draft. He broke out as a senior at Missouri with 11 sacks, largely in part due to his hustle and motor. Sam is not an elite athlete, and he looks to be more of a part-time player at the pro level.|
Ravens | Rolando McClain fails conditioning test Wed Apr 16, 12:01 PM
Updating previous reports, retired LB Rolando McClain failed his conditioning tests during his workout with the Baltimore Ravens. The test consisted of six timed 150-yard runs.
|Footballguys view: Nobody should be shocked by this news. McClain was a bust for many reasons as a pro, and certainly was never a player who had outstanding conditioning. His comeback won't go further than the refrigerator if he can't get in better shape.|

Redskins | Charles Sims expected to visit Wed Apr 16, 11:59 AM
The Washington Redskins are expected to meet with West Virginia RB Charles Sims Wednesday, April 16.
|Footballguys view: Sims is arguably the most well-rounded back in this class. He's a good runner with instincts and vision to run between the tackles. He's a good receiver who can create mismatches against linebackers on wheel routes. Sims plays a lot like Matt Forte (Bears) and should be a second- or third-round pick.|

Lions | Golden Tate has high hopes Wed Apr 16, 10:46 AM
Detroit Lions WR Golden Tate said he thinks he can be a 'more explosive Lance Moore,' referring to the former New Orleans Saints receiver. Moore caught 65 passes for 1,041 yards and six touchdowns in 2012.
|Footballguys view: We think Tate is more of a explosive version of Josh Reed, but the bottom line is this; he'll have a great opportunity to put up better numbers with a more robust passing game in Detroit. Tate's fantasy value would take a hit if the Lions add a premiere wide receiver like Sammy Watkins (Clemson) or Mike Evans (Texas A&M) in the 2014 NFL draft.|

Broncos | Montee Ball receives endorsement Wed Apr 16, 10:24 AM
Denver Broncos QB Peyton Manning said he believes RB Montee Ball is ready to be a starting running back.
|Footballguys view: It's Ball's time. The Broncos let Knowshon Moreno walk in free agency to the Miami Dolphins because they are ready to let Ball tote the rock. He'll build off the momentum that he established last year as the season went on. Over the final six weeks of 2013, only Jamaal Charles (6.6) averaged more yards per carry than Ball (6.5, 52-337). Ball also led the NFL in percentage of rushes for first downs (40.4 percent) and carries of 10 or more yards (21.2 percent) during final six weeks of 2013.|

Browns | A.J. McCarron working out Wed Apr 16, 10:24 AM
The Cleveland Browns are conducting a private workout with Alabama QB A.J. McCarron Wednesday, April 16.
|Footballguys view: McCarron is hated because he's a winner--at least that's what he thinks. He comes off as a curmudgeon at the podium, and his performance on tape is poor as well. McCarron is getting hype because he was a winner at Alabama, surrounded by the nation's best. An honest assessment of his skill set reveals a backup-caliber quarterback with a weak arm.|
Vikings | Josh Samuda injured at OTAs Tue Apr 15, 11:56 PM

Ravens | Rolando McClain shows rust in workout Tue Apr 15, 11:55 PM
Retired LB Rolando McClain (Ravens) worked out for the Baltimore Ravens Tuesday, April 15, as he attempts a comeback. The workout wasn't a smooth one in terms of conditioning, and he has a lot of rust, according to a league source.
|Footballguys view: McClain showed rust when he was active. It's no surprise he wouldn't be sharp during a comeback attempt.|

Patriots | Host Solomon Patton Tue Apr 15, 11:54 PM
The New England Patriots had University of Florida WR Solomon Patton in for a pre-draft visit this week.
|Footballguys view: Patton would be a good fit for the Patriots. He's ultra quick, and Patton is very dangerous after the catch. While not the biggest wide receiver, he's not afraid to catch passes over the middle in traffic. He's a late-round pick worth keeping an eye on.|
Jets | Won't overpay for Chris Johnson Tue Apr 15, 11:54 PM
The New York Jets are sticking to their budget/value system. While they want free-agent RB Chris Johnson (Titans), they will not 'overpay' for him. The depressed running back market suggests Johnson will fetch $3-4 million per year maximum.
|Footballguys view: This is what every team is going to respond with. Nobody wants to overpay for an aging veteran running back with motivation issues. We'll see what kind of deal Johnson gets when the ink is actually dry somewhere. In addition to the Jets, the Bills could have interest in Johnson.|

49ers | Aldon Smith not expected back Tue Apr 15, 11:53 PM
San Francisco 49ers LB Aldon Smith hasn't only lost the benefit of the doubt with the team, but he probably won't play with the team in 2014, according to several sources involved with the team's decision making. However, the NFL is almost certain to punish him for his latest arrest, and the team will probably wait through the legal and NFL processes before making any final conclusion.
|Footballguys view: Zero surprise here. Smith is gifted, but his off-field problems have become too much of a distraction. Hopefully he can get his life back in order and get back to starring on the football field.|

Chargers | Malcom Floyd's status uncertain Tue Apr 15, 11:49 PM
San Diego Chargers WR Malcom Floyd (neck) continues his rehab from a neck injury, but his status is still uncertain. When the team begins voluntary workouts April 22, Floyd will be there to participate, a league source said Tuesday, April 15. His activity level will be more limited than his teammates, however.
|Footballguys view: Neck injuries are nothing to mess around with. Floyd is a favorite target of Philip Rivers, so the team will be extra cautious with him as he comes back from this injury.|

Buccaneers | Solomon Patton works out Tue Apr 15, 11:46 PM
The Tampa Bay Buccaneers worked out University of Florida WR Solomon Patton this week.
|Footballguys view: Patton is a lightning quick receiver who can make defenders miss after the catch. He's dangerous in space as a return man, and Patton is a threat to score every time he gets the ball after the catch.|

Free-agent RB Chris Johnson's (Titans) visit with the New York Jets reportedly went well Tuesday, April 15, but he left without a deal. Other teams are involved with him, too.
|Footballguys view: There's a small handful of potential suitors for Johnson at this time. The Jets could be considered the frontrunners, but no deal seems imminent. Johnson may still be getting interest from the Buffalo Bills as well.|

Browns | Johnny Manziel to visit this weekend Tue Apr 15, 05:30 PM
The Cleveland Browns will visit with Texas A&M QB Johnny Manziel this weekend.
|Footballguys view: Manziel could certainly be an option for the Browns in the first round. He would be a good fit for the Kyle Shanahan system. Any team that adds Manziel can't force him into a traditional offense. Instead, a franchise must be willing to think outside the box. Shanahan's offense can accentuate Manziel's athletic gifts the way it did Robert Griffin III in Washington.|
Jaguars | Gus Bradley gushes over Jadeveon Clowney, Khalil Mack Tue Apr 15, 05:26 PM
Jacksonville Jaguars head coach Gus Bradley has been very impressed with South Carolina DE Jadeveon Clowney and Buffalo LB Khalil Mack. 'Physically, his appearance, you don't see many guys that are built like him, with the size and the speed and the agility that he has,' Bradley said of Clowney. Bradley also isn't worried about the work ethic of Clowney.
|Footballguys view: The Jaguars may wait on a quarterback in the first round to select either Clowney or Mack. Both are elite pass-rushers who can make an immediate impact in the NFL. Mack is better in coverage, and Clowney is the more rare athletic prospect.|
Buccaneers | Gerald McCoy won't hold out Tue Apr 15, 05:23 PM
Tampa Bay Buccaneers DT Gerald McCoy said he will be in attendance when training camp starts this summer no matter where the status of his contract talks are.
|Footballguys view: McCoy is entering the final year of his contract in 2014. He's currently scheduled to make over $10 million this season. New Bucs head coach Lovie Smith has called re-signing McCoy a priority.|

Patriots | Worked out Weston Richburg Tue Apr 15, 03:26 PM
The New England Patriots held a private workout last week for Colorado State OG Weston Richburg. He's projected to be taken early in the second round of this year's draft.
|Footballguys view: Richburg is arguably the best center prospect in this draft class, and many in the scouting community compare him to former Colts great Jeff Saturday. He can move well in space, and Richburg can be a sticky blocker at the second level. Many scouts feel he can be a 10-year starter at the position. Richburg controlled all the line calls in college, and he's comfortable working with a quarterback who calls many audibles.|
Cardinals | Weston Richburg visits Tue Apr 15, 03:25 PM
The Arizona Cardinals visited with Colorado State OG Weston Richburg Monday, April 14.
The Cardinals are strengthening their offensive line this offseason, and adding a guy like Richgburg would continue that trend.|
49ers | Daniel Kilgore found not guilty Tue Apr 15, 03:20 PM
San Francisco 49ers OG Daniel Kilgore was found not guilty of public intoxication related to his arrest in January in Tennessee. His case was dismissed following his appearance in court Friday, April 11. Kilgore is expected to be the team's starting center in 2014.Link to story
Packers | Matt Flynn to compete for backup job Tue Apr 15, 03:17 PM
Green Bay Packers QB Matt Flynn is expected to compete with QB Scott Tolzien for the backup quarterback job, but head coach Mike McCarthy anticipates keeping three QBs on the roster to open the season.
|Footballguys view: Flynn should be able to hold off Tolzien for the primary backup job behind Aaron Rodgers.|

Packers | Matt Flynn re-signs Tue Apr 15, 02:15 PM
The Green Bay Packers agreed to terms on an undisclosed deal to re-sign QB Matt Flynn Tuesday, April 15, according to a source.
|Footballguys view: It's a smart move for both sides. The Packers needed a quality backup behind Aaron Rodgers, and Flynn knows the system well. Flynn needed a new job as he's clearly a backup-caliber player who wasn't going to get a starting opportunity elsewhere.|

Bengals | Darqueze Dennard visits Tue Apr 15, 01:54 PM
Michigan State CB Darqueze Dennard visited with the Cincinnati Bengals Monday, April 14, and Tuesday, April 15, according to a source.
|Footballguys view: The Bengals are looking for a young corner to groom as an eventual starter. Dennard can consistently re-route wide receivers when playing press. He's a physical player who will fight for contested passes. Dennard should be a first-round pick in the 2014 NFL draft.|

Dolphins | Expect big things from Dion Jordan Tue Apr 15, 01:46 PM
Miami Dolphins general manager Dennis Hickey is expecting big things from DE Dion Jordan in his second season this year. "He's a very talented player and this is a big offseason for him," Hickey said. "Last year with his shoulder he didn't have an opportunity to have a full offseason. That's so important. Developing and getting your body -- not just the physical reps but the mental reps -- getting in the weight room and all those things is such an important part to get these guys ready to make that jump.'
|Footballguys view: The Dolphins recently rejected a trade offer from the Philadelphia Eagles for Jordan. He's a talented pass-rusher with a nice combination of power and speed.|

NFL | Derek Carr says he's best QB available Tue Apr 15, 01:32 PM
Fresno State QB Derek Carr said he's 'absolutely' the best quarterback available in this year's draft class. He is seen as a potential first-round pick next month.
|Footballguys view: We respectfully disagree, but we do appreciate the confidence that Carr has shown with this statement. Every QB should feel like he's the best, but Carr has flaws to his game that might hold him back early as a pro. He has a strong arm and can fit passes into tight windows. Carr is athletic enough to keep plays alive with his feet if necessary. However, Carr's game falls apart under pressure. Even when he's not in danger, Carr will feel pressure and react negatively. We'll see if his NFL team can help him overcome "seeing ghosts" on the football field.|
Cowboys | To meet with Timmy Jernigan Tue Apr 15, 01:28 PM
The Dallas Cowboys are scheduled to meet with Florida State DT Timmy Jernigan Tuesday, April 15.
|Footballguys view: Jernigan is a big-bodied tackle who can stuff the run in the middle. He has violent striking hands that help him disengage from a blocker. Jernigan does wear down quickly as games go on, so as a pro he'll likely have to be worked in a rotation.|
Cowboys | Met with Aaron Donald Tue Apr 15, 01:26 PM
The Dallas Cowboys met with Pittsburgh DT Aaron Donald Monday, April 14. He appears to be an ideal fit for defensive coordinator Rod Marinelli's defensive scheme, and Donald might be the best defensive tackle in this year's draft.
|Footballguys view: Donald was a standout player at the Senior Bowl earlier this year. His first-step explosion is elite, and Donald has the strength to control the point of attack. He's got the quickness and snap anticipation to get into the backfield quickly.|
49ers | Brandon Lloyd signs Tue Apr 15, 01:20 PM
The San Francisco 49ers signed free-agent WR Brandon Lloyd (Patriots) to an undisclosed deal Tuesday, April 15.
|Footballguys view: Let's hope he doesn't duck when any incoming passes are headed in his direction. Lloyd played for the 49ers earlier in his career after being a fourth-round pick by the team in 2003. He bounced around the league after that, and he was out of football in 2013. Lloyd will compete as a reserve receiver, but is not guaranteed a roster spot.|

Vikings | Getting extended look at Teddy Bridgewater Tue Apr 15, 01:18 PM
The Minnesota Vikings visited with Louisville QB Teddy Bridgewater Monday, April 14, and he remains with the team Tuesday, April 15. He also worked out for the team over the weekend.
|Footballguys view: The thought of Bridgewater falling to the end of the first round just doesn't make sense. He's this year's most accurate quarterback who knows how to run a pro-style offense. The Vikings would be wise to add Bridgewater in the first round if he's available when they pick at 8th overall.|
