Cowboys | Dallas, Greg Hardy near agreement?    Tue Mar 17, 11:47 PM

Free-agent DE Greg Hardy (Panthers) and the Dallas Cowboys might finalize a deal by Wednesday, March 18, according to a source.

Footballguys view: Hardy may be facing a six-game suspension this year, but that isn't stopping teams from having interest. He's a talented pass-rusher who would be able to help out any team that adds him. It sounds like the Cowboys have to be considered the frontrunners here.

Redskins | 'Skins bluffing on Marcus Mariota?    Tue Mar 17, 10:39 PM

The Washington Redskins are reportedly interested in Oregon QB Marcus Mariota with the No. 5 overall pick in the NFL Draft. However, Charles Robinson of Yahoo! Sports believes the Redskins are trying to stimulate a trade ahead of the No. 5 pick, pushing another player down the board.

Footballguys view: With Robert Griffin III, Kirk Cousins and Colt McCoy already on the roster any interest in a rookie quarterbacks seems a bit off. Washington is probably trying to get a team to bite on a trade in order to move up in the draft.

Chargers | Philip Rivers says he'll be ready    Tue Mar 17, 10:38 PM

San Diego Chargers QB Philip Rivers (back) has been working out nearly every day at Chargers Park, although not to the level he normally would be at this time of year. Still, he declared Tuesday, March 17, that he will be ready for the team's offseason program.

Footballguys view: Rivers isn't a spring chicken anymore. He'll take it easy at this time of year, but when training camp rolls around we'll see Rivers at his normal level.

Chargers | Marcus Mariota in play for Bolts?    Tue Mar 17, 10:35 PM

The San Diego Chargers might be serious about their interest in Oregon QB Marcus Mariota, and numerous people around the league have speculated the team could be serious about selecting Mariota in the 2015 NFL Draft. They are scheduled to work Mariota out next month.

Footballguys view: An interesting situation here. Philip Rivers is in the final year of his contract, and the team may want to draft their next quarterback. They have the 17th overall pick in the draft, and they would have to move up around 10 spots (at least) to secure Mariota's services.

Bills | Charles Clay signs offer sheet from Bills    Tue Mar 17, 07:27 PM

Miami Dolphins transition free-agent TE Charles Clay signed an offer sheet from the Buffalo Bills Tuesday, March 17. The Dolphins have five days to match the offer.

Footballguys view: We think the Dolphins will let him go. If they decline to match the Bills' offer sheet, they will receive no compensation for losing Clay as he was tagged as a transitional player.

Free-agent LS Casey Kreiter (Cowboys) was re-signed to an undisclosed deal Tuesday, March 17.

Patriots | Travaris Cadet signs with Patriots    Tue Mar 17, 05:33 PM

Free-agent RB Travaris Cadet (Saints) has signed with the New England Patriots. Terms of the deal were undisclosed.

NFL | Jermaine Gresham could undergo surgery    Tue Mar 17, 03:42 PM

Former Cincinnati Bengals TE Jermaine Gresham (back) may have surgery Thursday, March 19, to repair a back injury.

Footballguys view: Gresham will meet with a doctor Wednesday, March 18. He will be ready for the start of training camp. We'll see if somebody takes a chance on Gresham even though he's got this back injury. Gresham may have to wait until he's healed to get a new team.

Vikings | Terence Newman visits    Tue Mar 17, 02:38 PM

Free-agent CB Terence Newman (Bengals) visited with the Minnesota Vikings Monday, March 16.

Footballguys view: Newman played under Vikings head coach Mike Zimmer during their days with the Bengals. They were also together with the Cowboys early in Newman's career. Newman had been considering retirement, but some team could sign him for veteran depth. Reuniting with Zimmer makes a lot of sense.

Patriots | Terence Newman to visit    Tue Mar 17, 02:38 PM

Free-agent CB Terence Newman (Bengals) is scheduled to visit with the New England Patriots Tuesday, March 17.

Footballguys view: The Patriots need to rebuild their secondary after the departure of both Darrelle Revis and Brandon Browner. Newman could be a short-term answer. The veteran corner has started 174 career games, and he was a starter last year in Cincinnati. He has been considering retirement, but some team may decide to make an offer for veteran depth.

Browns | Cleveland not banking on Johnny Manziel    Tue Mar 17, 02:23 PM

Cleveland Browns QB Johnny Manziel won't be counted on for the 2015 season, especially after the Browns offered a late first-round pick to try to acquire Philadelphia Eagles QB Sam Bradford.

Footballguys view: Good, the Browns are finally thinking clearly. Manziel COULD work out as a pro quarterback, but the odds are stacked against him. It's more likely that he'll just be a gadget quarterback during his time (brief?) in the NFL. Cleveland could also select a quarterback in the first couple of rounds in this year's draft.

Raiders | Trent Richardson to compete for starter    Tue Mar 17, 02:12 PM

Oakland Raiders RB Trent Richardson will be competing with RB Latavius Murray for the starting running back position this offseason.

Footballguys view: Murray has to be considered the frontrunner here. Richardson may have more natural talent, but it has not been on display since his rookie season in 2012--and he may never be the player he could be. Stay tuned.

Raiders | Trent Richardson signs with Oakland    Tue Mar 17, 12:58 PM

Free-agent RB Trent Richardson (Colts) signed with the Oakland Raiders Tuesday, March 17. Terms of the contract were not disclosed.

Footballguys view: This is a Raiders move all the way. For years--decades even--the Raiders have been the final stop for once highly-touted players who lost their way. Sometimes the reclamation projects work out, and sometimes they don't. Talent isn't a question with Richardson--but motivation and lack of durability certainly are. We'll see if he can beat out Latavius Murray for the starting job in training camp.

Redskins | Colt McCoy re-signs    Tue Mar 17, 12:19 PM

Free-agent QB Colt McCoy re-signed with the Washington Redskins Tuesday, March 17, according to a league source. Terms of the contract were not disclosed.

Footballguys view: McCoy looked like the best quarterback on the Washington roster last year. He'll once again serve as a third-string player behind Robert Griffin III and Kirk Cousins. If those two get hurt or struggle to perform, then McCoy could come in and look good again.

Cowboys | Greg Hardy negotiating    Tue Mar 17, 12:19 PM

Buccaneers | Greg Hardy to visit    Tue Mar 17, 12:05 PM

Free-agent DE Greg Hardy (Panthers) is scheduled to visit the Tampa Bay Buccaneers.

Footballguys view: Hardy will be a dangerous pass-rusher for any team that's interested. The Buccaneers have been trying to rebuild their defense, and Hardy would be a fine asset--even though he may be suspended the first six games of the season.

Vikings | Re-sign Michael Harris     Tue Mar 17, 11:46 AM

Minnesota Vikings OT Michael X. Harris was re-signed Tuesday, March 17. Terms of the contract were not disclosed.

Footballguys view: Harris will compete as the swing tackle for the Vikings in training camp. There's also a chance he could win the starting left guard job vacated by Charlie Johnson. Harris started five games for the Vikings last year, and the Vikings felt he was good enough to keep around.

Seahawks | Greg Hardy to visit    Tue Mar 17, 11:46 AM

Free-agent DE Greg Hardy (Panthers) is expected to visit the Seattle Seahawks, according to a league source.

Footballguys view: Hardy would be a tremendous pass-rusher for any team that adds him....but he'd be especially dangerous if added to the already stout Seattle defense. He could be suspended the first six games of the 2015 season, and that's why the market has been cool for him so far. With the first wave of free agency done, expect that market to heat up.

Chargers | Stevie Johnson officially signs    Tue Mar 17, 11:18 AM

Updating a previous report, free-agent WR Stevie Johnson (49ers) officially signed with the San Diego Chargers Tuesday, March 17, on a three-year deal. Financial terms of the contract were not disclosed.

Footballguys view: It's a good move for the Chargers and for Johnson. He gets to jump-start his career after things fell apart with the 49ers. They get a veteran wide receiver who should win the starting job opposite Keenan Allen in 2015.

Cowboys | Greg Hardy to visit    Tue Mar 17, 11:17 AM

Free-agent DE Greg Hardy (Panthers) is expected to visit the Dallas Cowboys Tuesday, March 17.

Footballguys view: Hardy may get suspended six games to start the 2015 season. He's supremely talented as a pass-rusher, but the market has been fairly cool for his services because of a potential suspension. We'll see that market heat up a bit now that the first wave of free agency is done.

Bills | Kraig Urbik restructures    Tue Mar 17, 10:46 AM

Buffalo Bills OG Kraig Urbik restructured his contract Tuesday, March 17. He reduced his 2015 salary by $1.5 million, and his 2016 salary was slashed from $2.9 million to $1.2 million.

Chargers | Stevie Johnson headed to San Diego    Tue Mar 17, 10:44 AM

Free-agent WR Stevie Johnson (49ers) will sign with the San Diego Chargers, according to sources.

Footballguys view: Johnson stays in California with this move. He gets to compete for the WR2 job opposite Keenan Allen in San Diego. Johnson's career got off track during his time in San Francisco, but catching passes from Philip Rivers could jump-start his career again. He could experience a similar resurgence to what Eddie Royal did with the Chargers.

Bills | Kyle Williams restructures    Tue Mar 17, 09:42 AM

Buffalo Bills DT Kyle D. Williams restructured his contract Tuesday, March 17. He reduced his 2015 salary from $4.8 million to $4.5 million and reduced his 2016 salary from $7 million to $6 million.

Titans | Justin Blalock visits    Tue Mar 17, 09:29 AM

Free-agent OG Justin Blalock (Falcons) recently visited with the Tennessee Titans.

Footballguys view: Blalock spent eight seasons as the left guard for the Falcons, missing just three games during that time. He's not a fantastic option as his play has slipped a bit recently, but Blalock would be a decent addition to the Titans offensive line.

Saints | Dannell Ellerbe restructures    Tue Mar 17, 08:32 AM

New Orleans Saints LB Dannell Ellerbe restructured his contract to reduce his 2015 salary from $8.45 million to $1.1 million. Ellerbe's 2016 and 2017 salaries also reduced from $6.45 million and $6.0 million to $4.1 million each year.

Bears | May look at Mason Foster    Tue Mar 17, 07:51 AM

Free-agent LB Mason Foster (Buccaneers) has drawn interest from the Chicago Bears, but the teams have not discussed a multi-year contract or any sort of deal.

Footballguys view: We're surprised a deal hasn't gotten done here yet. The Bears are looking to re-work their defense, and Foster would give them a veteran presence at linebacker.

Eagles | Benardrick McKinney to visit    Tue Mar 17, 07:45 AM

Mississippi State LB Benardrick McKinney will visit the Philadelphia Eagles in advance of the 2015 NFL Draft.

Footballguys view: McKinney is an aggressive player who can sniff out the run. He is a sound tackler and does a good job of forcefully bringing down an opponent. McKinney has the speed to be used as a blitzer, although he lacks the elite athleticism to be used much in coverage. At the very least, McKinney is a good two-down player in the NFL.

Eagles | Matt Barkley available in trade    Tue Mar 17, 07:37 AM

Philadelphia Eagles QB Matt Barkley is on the trading block, according to those close to the team. The Eagles will likely go with a combination of QB Sam Bradford and QB Mark Sanchez.

Footballguys view: LOL. Barkley would fetch a bag of footballs in a trade. He was a fourth-round pick a couple of years ago, and Barkley has failed to impress any time he's been on the field. There's nothing to see here with his future or potential. We doubt any team would be duped into trading for him.

Seahawks | Jesse Williams may return    Tue Mar 17, 07:08 AM

Free-agent DT Jesse Williams (Seahawks) may return to the club in 2015, according to Wiliams himself.

Footballguys view: Williams was waived after knee injuries ended his last two seasons in Seattle. If healthy, he can work as a run-stuffing rotational player.

Cardinals | ARI meets with Melvin Gordon    Tue Mar 17, 07:02 AM

Wisconsin RB Melvin Gordon met with the Arizona Cardinals representatives on Monday, March 16.

Footballguys view: Gordon is likely to be a first-round pick in the 2015 NFL draft. The Cardinals want to find help for Andre Ellington in the backfield, and Gordon would do just that. A workhorse in college at Wisconsin, Gordon has a great blend of size and speed. He makes one cut and can explode into the second level of the defense. Gordon is not a power back, but his speed makes him a big-play threat every time he touches the ball.

Dolphins | Would like to retain Matt Moore    Tue Mar 17, 02:40 AM

Free-agent QB Matt Moore (Dolphins) is drawing interest from the Miami Dolphins, and Moore would like to return. However, sources indicate Moore wants fair market value for a backup quarterback so he may explore other options.

Footballguys view: Moore should just stay in Miami if the price is right. He's a good backup to keep around in case Ryan Tannehill gets banged up.

Redskins | Still interested in Taylor Mays    Tue Mar 17, 02:28 AM

Free-agent SS Taylor Mays (Bengals) has interest in the Washington Redskins, and the Redskins are trying to work out a visit in the coming days.

Footballguys view: Mays is an in-the-box safety who arrives at the ball-carrier with natural violence. Don't ask him to cover, but if used the right way he can be an effective player.

Cardinals | ARI saying no to Adrian Peterson?    Tue Mar 17, 02:07 AM

Minnesota Vikings RB Adrian Peterson may not be going to the Arizona Cardinals. A reliable source close to the team has said the Cardinals wouldn't add Peterson with three years and $45 million left on his contract.

Footballguys view: The Cardinals are looking for upgrades to the running back position, and Peterson would certainly help--but for a huge price. The Cowboys could be the team that's most interested in acquiring Peterson at this time.

Seahawks | Anthony Spencer visiting Seattle    Mon Mar 16, 10:32 PM

Free-agent DE Anthony Spencer (Cowboys) is visiting the Seattle Seahawks, according to a source.

Footballguys view: He's not the same player he used to be, but Spencer could certainly help out the Seahawks as a part-time pass-rusher.

49ers | Stevie Johnson not returning to 49ers?    Mon Mar 16, 09:51 PM

Free-agent WR Stevie Johnson (49ers) will not re-sign with the San Francisco 49ers and is expected to decide between the New England Patriots and San Diego Chargers Tuesday, March 17, according to a source.

Footballguys view: We can't imagine him returning to the place where his career took a nosedive. A northern California native, we could see Johnson choosing to stay in the state by signing with the Chargers.

Seahawks | Chris Canty to visit Seattle    Mon Mar 16, 09:41 PM

Free-agent DE Chris Canty (Ravens) will visit the Seattle Seahawks Thursday, March 19, according to a source.

Footballguys view: Canty started 11 games for the Ravens last year, but in Seattle he'd likely be moved inside to defensive tackle. He'd work well as a rotational player up front.

Chargers | Stevie Johnson eyeing San Diego     Mon Mar 16, 09:34 PM

Free-agent WR Stevie Johnson has the San Diego Chargers on his list of teams he is considering signing with.

Footballguys view: That sounds about right. Johnson could stay in California if acquired by the Chargers. He'd have a good quarterback throwing to him in Philip Rivers, and Johnson could help rebuild his declining stock. If added, Johnson would compete to be the WR2 opposite Keenan Allen.

Jets | Stevie Johnson pursued by Jets?    Mon Mar 16, 09:30 PM

Free-agent WR Stevie Johnson has been pursued by the New York Jets, but the interest is not mutual, according to a source.

Footballguys view: Johnson is a northern California guy, and he may not want to set up shop on the East coast. The Jets traded for Brandon Marshall, but they're not done adding talent at the wide receiver position.

Cardinals | Help coming for Andre Ellington?    Mon Mar 16, 09:15 PM

Arizona Cardinals RB Andre Ellington dealt with several injuries last season, and general manager Steve Keim said that the Cardinals 'definitely need to shore up' the running back position.

Footballguys view: We love Andre Ellington, but the truth is the guy is not built to carry a full workload in the NFL. It's wise for the Cardinals to be looking for additional help at the position. Depending on the quality level of the help, Ellington's fantasy value could be heavily impacted or just slightly altered. From the backs they're looking at, it seems like Arizona wants to find a workhorse and make Ellington a change-of-pace back. That would dramatically alter his fantasy value -- stay tuned.

Raiders | Denarius Moore finished in Oakland?    Mon Mar 16, 08:36 PM

Free-agent WR Denarius Moore is unlikely to re-sign with the Oakland Raiders, according to a source familiar with the situation.

Footballguys view: Moore just needs a fresh start. Talent is not a question, but staying healthy certainly is. He's never played a full 16-game season in his pro career, and last year Moore was only active for 10 games. If healthy, he has the speed to attack a defense vertically and can be a decent deep threat. We'll see if there's a few teams willing to take a chance on him.

Bears | Vladimir Ducasse signs    Mon Mar 16, 07:02 PM

Free-agent OG Vladimir Ducasse (Jets) signed a one-year deal with the Chicago Bears Monday, March 16. Financial terms of the deal weren't disclosed.

Footballguys view: Ducasse was once a highly-touted second-round pick of the Jets in 2010. He can line up at either guard position, and he has experience playing right tackle as well. Too bad he's not very good. The Bears will see if he can win a reserve role with the team in 2015.

Ravens | Shane Ray to visit    Mon Mar 16, 06:29 PM

Missouri DE Shane Ray is scheduled to meet with the Baltimore Ravens, according to a source.

Footballguys view: The one word to describe Ray is relentless. The dude just gets after the quarterback and he simply won't quit. Ray is quick off the edge, and he has good closing burst to the quarterback. He's likely to be a top-10 pick in the 2015 NFL draft.

Vikings | George Selvie to visit    Mon Mar 16, 06:27 PM

Free-agent DE George Selvie (Cowboys) is scheduled to visit with the Minnesota Vikings this week.

Footballguys view: Selvie, 28, has appeared in all 16 games in the previous two seasons for the Dallas Cowboys. He was drafted in the seventh round (226th) by the St. Louis Rams in 2010. If added, Selvie would likely back up Brian Robison.
