Cowboys | Jaylon Smith no longer wearing brace Sun May 13, 11:28 AM
Dallas Cowboys LB Jaylon Smith is no longer wearing a brace on his left ankle and foot due to drop foot. He said he hasn't worn it since resuming workouts in February.
|Footballguys view: Two years removed from his major knee injury, Smith is poised to do more for the Cowboys in 2018. He started only six games in 2017 but appeared in every regular season contest. We'll see if without the brace Smith begins to look like the player he once was in college at Notre Dame.|

Colts | Deon Cain to have a role early? Sun May 13, 12:03 AM
Indianapolis Colts WR Deon Cain could 'find catches as a rookie' despite being a sixth-round pick in the 2018 NFL Draft, according to Lance Zierlein of NFL.com.
|Footballguys view: Cain fell to the sixth round even though some felt he would be a second or third round pick. A former high school quarterback, Cain is dangerous with the ball in his hands after the catch. He's got the ability to 'stab and stash' the ball quickly so defenders don't get much of a shot at stripping the ball away. Cain did not increase his production in college with enhanced opportunity and may never be more than a quality rotational player. The upside is there to be more if he can play up to that untapped potential.|
Rams | John Kelly to be the backup? Sat May 12, 11:41 PM
Los Angeles Rams RB John Kelly's versatility as a receiver makes him a better candidate to be the backup to RB Todd Gurley than RB Malcolm Brown, according to Lance Zierlein of NFL.com.
|Footballguys view: Kelly had 37 catches last year for the Volunteers and can stay on the field all three downs if need be. He's violent as a runner and will use his stiff arm to create space for himself. Kelly is not creative or elusive with the ball in his hands, and has more of a 'no nonsense' style of running the ball. We'll see how he compares to Brown (more of a power back) in the Rams battle for backup running back.|

Buccaneers | Justin Watson impressing early Sat May 12, 11:08 PM
Tampa Bay Buccaneers WR Justin Watson has been running 'crisp, precise routes' during rookie minicamp, according to Scott Reynolds of PewterReport.com.
|Footballguys view: Watson has what scouts call 'late hands' as he doesn't tip off deep passes are coming in until the final moment. He's not going to run away from many defenders, but Watson is tough and doesn't mind taking a hit to secure a catch. The Bucs have some room on the depth chart behind their top trio at wide receiver (Mike Evans, DeSean Jackson, Adam Humphries).|
Saints | Jonathan Williams to fill the void? Sat May 12, 10:49 PM
New Orleans Saints RB Jonathan Williams was one of the players head coach Sean Payton mentioned when discussing who will step up while RB Mark Ingram is serving his suspension.
|Footballguys view: A fifth-round pick out of Arkansas in 2016, Williams lasted only one season with Buffalo. He spent 10 weeks on the Broncos practice squad in 2017 before getting dumped, but the Saints then scooped him up and kept him on the active roster. With Ingram suspended the first month of the year, we'll see if Williams can come through on the potential he still has.|
Saints | Alvin Kamara won't be overworked Sat May 12, 10:42 PM
New Orleans Saints RB Alvin Kamara won't be overworked during RB Mark Ingram's suspension, according to head coach Sean Payton. 'By all means, we don't want to sit there and run the tread off the back with him early in the season because this thing it's a marathon, 16 games,' Payton said.
|Footballguys view: Kamara is going to have a larger role in 2018, especially with Mark Ingram suspended the first four games of the year. We'll see him maintain a large role even when Ingram comes back in Week 5. The Saints will continue to use a rotation of backs behind Kamara, likely led by Jonathan Williams while Ingram is out.|

Texans | Jordan Thomas working on blocking Sat May 12, 10:16 PM
Houston Texans TE Jordan Thomas has been focusing on refining his blocking techniques during rookie minicamp.
|Footballguys view: Thomas is a 280 pound converted wide receiver, and blocking is not his hallmark. He is a receiving threat and can create mismatches against linebackers due to his skill set. The Texans have Ryan Griffin and Stephen Anderson at the top of the depth chart, but Thomas could compete for a spot in the rotation if he proves himself in camp.|
Texans | Houston high on Vyncint Smith Sat May 12, 10:06 PM
Houston Texans WR Vyncint Smith was a 'priority free agent' following the 2018 NFL Draft, according to head coach Bill O'Brien, and O'Brien believes Smith could help on special teams and contribute as a receiver.
|Footballguys view: Smith could eventually be stashed on the practice squad, but there's a chance he lands on the 53-man roster as the coaching staff seems very high on his ability. He's got the size, speed, and playmaking instincts to translate from the small school level (Limestone College) of play with some development time.|
Dolphins | Miami wants Mike Gesicki on the field Sat May 12, 09:56 PM
Miami Dolphins offensive coordinator Dowell Loggains said they could use more sets with three tight ends this year in order to utilize TE Mike Gesicki.
|Footballguys view: Gesicki takes a basketball skill set to the football field and is your prototypical 'F' receiving tight end. We'll be interested to see how Gesicki can be incorporated into the offense, especially since fellow rookie TE Durham Smythe is there as well.|
Colts | Nyheim Hines turning heads Sat May 12, 09:51 PM
Indianapolis Colts RB Nyheim Hines has displayed an impressive ability to catch the ball, according to head coach Frank Reich.
|Footballguys view: Hines should be turning heads as he's got the 'wow' factor when touching the ball as a runner or receiver. He's got the ability to be moved all over the formation as Hines is a running back but can play slot receiver as well. Expect the Colts to mix him into the offense, making him an interesting flier pick in deep PPR leagues with 'what the heck' flex potential.|
Broncos | Steady role for Royce Freeman? Sat May 12, 09:29 PM
Denver Broncos RB Royce Freeman will have a chance to become a '1B' back to RB Devontae Booker, according to Mike Klis of 9News.com.
|Footballguys view: Notice how Klis is reporting a '1B' situation. That's accurate at this time as Booker should be the lead back for the Broncos to begin training camp. However, we think Freeman is just a better talent and could overtake Booker for the lead job. We'll watch this unfold in camp as the Broncos look to replace former 1,000 yard rusher C.J. Anderson.|

Chargers | Justin Jones signs deal Sat May 12, 05:42 PM
Los Angeles Chargers third-round draft choice DT Justin Jones signed a four-year deal with the Chargers Saturday, May 12. Financial terms were not disclosed.
|Footballguys view: Jones looks long and lean at 6'3" 309 pounds. He's not too bulky, but Jones is strong at the point of attack and can stuff the run. Jones won't offer much as a pass rusher but can work in a rotation to plug up the middle.|
Lions | Anthony Sherrils let go Sat May 12, 05:05 PM
Detroit Lions S Anthony Sherrils was waived Saturday, May 12.Link to story
Cowboys | Tavon Austin to be WR first Sat May 12, 04:41 PM
Dallas Cowboys WR Tavon Austin will line up at different spot this upcoming season but will be mostly used as a receiver, according to offensive coordinator Scott Linehan.
|Footballguys view: Austin can be moved around the formation and can line up in the backfield for certain looks. The team will be creative with the way he's used, but we're not expecting much from Austin in 2018.|
Tavon Austin player page
Saints | Adrian Peterson an option for Saints? Sat May 12, 04:40 PM
Free-agent RB Adrian Peterson (Cardinals) would be an option that New Orleans Saints head coach Sean Payton would consider if the team pursues a veteran running back.
|Footballguys view: That's odd because Peterson was such an odd fit for the Saints last year. He only played four games with the Saints in 2017 before getting traded to the Cardinals in October last year. The Saints have Mark Ingram suspended for the first month of the 2018 season, but they should be more than fine with guys like Jonathan Williams backing up starter Alvin Kamara.|

Giants | NYG in contact with Ereck Flowers Sat May 12, 02:36 PM
New York Giants head coach Pat Shurmur said he has been in contact with OT Ereck Flowers but is not sure if Flowers will participate in offseason workouts.
|Footballguys view: Reports indicate Flowers is upset with the Giants signing left tackle Nate Solder in free agency. Perhaps he should be upset with himself as he's struggled to impress playing left tackle since the team selected him in the first round of the 2015 NFL draft. If/when Flowers shows up, the Giants will play him at right tackle.|
Bengals | Cincy signs three more picks Sat May 12, 02:03 PM
Cincinnati Bengals second-round draft choice S Jessie Bates, fourth-round draft choice RB Mark Walton and fifth-round draft choice CB Darius Phillips signed four-year contracts with the Bengals Saturday, May 12. Financial terms were not disclosed.
|Footballguys view: Walton is one of our favorite 'sleeper' RBs in this draft class from a dynasty perspective. There were shades of Clinton Portis to his game when Walton played for the Miami Hurricanes (just like Portis). Walton is not a big back, but at 205 pounds he's got plenty of toughness to run inside and the speed to break it outside when possible. He needs to stay healthy in order to play up to his potential in the pros.|
NFL | Coby Fleener looking to be medically cleared Sat May 12, 01:42 PM
Free-agent TE Coby Fleener (concussion) is still trying to get medically cleared after suffering a concussion he suffered in Week 12 of the 2017 season, according to New Orleans Saints head coach Sean Payton.
|Footballguys view: Fleener busted during his time with the Saints, and injuries were a part of that failure. He's looking for a fresh start as soon as he's cleared, and there might be a team or two interested in Fleener's services when healthy.|
Coby Fleener player page
Panthers | Garrett Gilbert leader for No. 2 QB job Sat May 12, 01:41 PM
Carolina Panthers QB Garrett Gilbert is considered the leading candidate for the No. 2 quarterback job at this point, according to head coach Ron Rivera.
|Footballguys view: Gilbert should be in the lead for the backup spot. The Panthers only have Taylor Heinicke and rookie Kyle Allen competing with him.|
Bears | Aaron Murray trying out Sat May 12, 01:19 PM
Free-agent QB Aaron Murray (Rams) is participating in the Chicago Bears' rookie minicamp this weekend on a tryout basis.
|Footballguys view: Murray is a camp arm for the Bears. He has experience working with new Bears head coach Matt Nagy from the time he was a backup to Alex Smith with the Kansas City Chiefs.|

Lions | Ameer Abdullah frustrated with role Sat May 12, 12:40 PM
Detroit Lions RB Ameer Abdullah said he was frustrated with the role he had in 2017 because he did not receive consistent touches during games.
|Footballguys view: Abdullah needs to earn those consistent touches. He's been nothing but a disappointment during his pro career. However, some say he's just been misused as he should have never been considered a full-time back coming out of Nebraska years ago. Abdullah shouldn't be happy this year either as the Lions added LeGarrette Blount in free agency and Kerryon Johnson (Auburn) in the 2018 NFL draft. Add in Theo Riddick as the pass-catching back and you can see how Abdullah may not get many touches in 2018.|

Panthers | Two Panthers draft picks sign deals Sat May 12, 12:36 PM

Bills | Buffalo signs Tremaine Edmunds Sat May 12, 12:26 PM
Buffalo Bills first-round draft choice LB Tremaine Edmunds signed a four-year contract with the Bills Saturday, May 12. Financial terms were not disclosed, but the deal includes a fifth-year option.
|Footballguys view: Edmunds is a freak, and we mean that as the highest compliment. His physical gifts are off the charts, and he's drawn comparisons to Jevon Kearse because of it. He just turned 20 years old earlier this month, and Edmunds has all the upside you can dream of. Edmunds has length, speed, strength and athleticism to dominate at the linebacker position. If he develops, the Bills have a special player with the ability to be the best in the game.|
Buccaneers | Alex Cappa signs deal Sat May 12, 12:24 PM
Tampa Bay Buccaneers third-round draft choice OT Alex Cappa signed a four-year contract with the Buccaneers Saturday, May 12. Financial terms were not disclosed.Link to story
Buccaneers | Jack Cichy practices Friday Sat May 12, 10:24 AM
Tampa Bay Buccaneers LB Jack Cichy (knee) participated in practice at rookie minicamp Friday, May 11, nine months after undergoing surgery to repair a torn anterior cruciate ligament in his right knee.Link to story
Chargers | Derwin James to move around Fri May 11, 11:43 PM
Los Angeles Chargers S Derwin James is an 'alpha dog,' according to head coach Anthony Lynn, and Lynn said the defensive staff will be creative with how James is used.
|Footballguys view: James is an 'alpha' and can step on the field and immediately be one of the most intimidating players in the league. He played linebacker (both MIKE and SAM), plus outside corner, plus nickel corner and oh yeah - both safety positions during his time in college with the Seminoles. We can't wait to see him fly around the field and help set the tone for a fierce Chargers defense in 2018.|
Raiders | Oakland waives Colby Wadman Fri May 11, 11:39 PM

Cardinals | Arizona signs two more rookies Fri May 11, 11:34 PM

Cardinals | Chase Edmonds signs rookie deal Fri May 11, 11:31 PM
Arizona Cardinals RB Chase Edmonds signed a four-year deal Friday, May 11.
|Footballguys view: Edmonds has a compact build at 5'9" 205 pounds. He's a fine receiver out of the backfield with the ability to make defenders look silly with multiple moves in the open field. His lack of bulk might hinder his ability to be a full time player, but he's got the upside to be a decent change-of-pace back in the NFL.|
Jaguars | Allen Lazard to play receiver Fri May 11, 10:42 PM
Jacksonville Jaguars WR Allen Lazard said he chose to sign with Jacksonville as an undrafted free agent because the Jaguars were one of the teams who viewed him as a receiver and a not a tight end.
|Footballguys view: Measuring in at 6'4" 225 pounds, Lazard is a big-bodied receiver who does a good job of keeping smaller defenders at bay. Every game he played in college, Lazard had at least one reception and recorded an Iowa State record of 48-straight games of doing just that. Lazard is not an elite athlete but has the strength and concentration to be at least a red zone weapon in the pros.|
Cardinals | Sam Bradford still the starter Fri May 11, 10:25 PM
Arizona Cardinals QB Sam Bradford is the starting quarterback, head coach Steve Wilks said Friday, May 11, but Wilks added that he wouldn't hold back QB Josh Rosen.
|Footballguys view: Wilks needs to add 'for now' to this statement. Bradford came to Arizona on a one-year deal to keep the seat warm for whatever quarterback the Cardinals selected in the 2018 NFL draft. That became Josh Rosen (UCLA) with the 10th overall pick, and Rosen is clearly the future. Don't expect Bradford to hang onto the starting job all season long...especially if/when he struggles.|
Sam Bradford player page
Cardinals | Josh Rosen a quick study Fri May 11, 09:54 PM
Arizona Cardinals QB Josh Rosen settled down after showing some early nerves during the first day of rookie minicamp Friday, May 11, according to head coach Steve Wilks, and Wilks said Rosen is already showing an understanding of the playbook. 'The guy is extremely smart,' Wilks said.
|Footballguys view: Rosen is the smartest guy in the room, just ask him. In all seriousness, Rosen is incredibly bright and needed to be challenged according to his former college coach at UCLA Jim Mora Jr. Rosen has a chip on his shoulder because of the 'nine huge mistakes' made in front of him in the 2018 NFL draft. Sam Bradford may be the starter for now, but Rosen has the upside to be a franchise quarterback for the Cardinals. Don't be surprised if he takes over this season.|
Dolphins | David Fales could win backup gig Fri May 11, 09:40 PM
Miami Dolphins QB David Fales was impressive in his Week 17 start last year and will have a chance to compete with QB Brock Osweiler to be the backup quarterback in 2018, according to head coach Adam Gase.
|Footballguys view: Fales has a quick throwing motion and he's got great anticipation as a passer. His arm strength isn't the greatest and he's not the biggest guy either. We'll see if he can beat out Osweiler for that backup job to Ryan Tannehill in 2018.|
Brock Osweiler player page
Dolphins | Mike Gesicki ready to make impact Fri May 11, 09:25 PM
Miami Dolphins TE Mike Gesicki said his best attributes right now are 'scoring touchdowns in the red zone' and making contested catches. 'That's one of reasons I was picked where I was,' Gesicki said.
|Footballguys view: Gesicki lined up in the slot or as the 'F' tight end for the Nittany Lions in college. A former standout basketball and volleyball player in high school, Gesicki is a fluid athlete who creates mismatches when he's on the football field. The Dolphins have to find a new starter at tight end with their decision to move on from Julius Thomas.|
Eagles | Josh Adams misses practice Fri May 11, 08:43 PM
Philadelphia Eagles RB Josh Adams (foot) did not participate in practice Friday, May 11, because of a hairline fracture in his foot.
|Footballguys view: Adams is still recovering from a foot injury suffered at the Scouting Combine earlier this year. He was not expected to practice, and may not practice at all in rookie minicamp.|
Giants | R.J. McIntosh does not practice Fri May 11, 08:35 PM
New York Giants DE R.J. McIntosh (undisclosed) did not participate in practice Friday, May 11, because of an undisclosed medical condition. He is expected to return to practice in the near future.Link to story
Steelers | James Washington signs deal Fri May 11, 08:35 PM
Pittsburgh Steelers second-round draft choice WR James Washington signed a four-year deal with the Steelers Friday, May 11, according to a source. Financial terms were not disclosed.
|Footballguys view: Washington reminds us so much of former NFL receiver Chris Chambers. Like Chambers, Washington is not that tall (5'11") but has long arms and a large wingspan to make plays consistently over smaller defenders. He did a great job snaring deep passes from QB Mason Rudolph in college at Oklahoma State, and the duo will continue playing together in the pros as Rudolph was drafted by the Steelers this year too.|
Chargers | Five Chargers picks signed Fri May 11, 08:04 PM
Los Angeles Chargers second-round draft choice LB Uchenna Nwosu, fourth-round draft choice LB/S Kyzir White, fifth-round draft choice OG Scott Quessenberry, sixth-round draft choice WR Dylan Cantrell and seventh-round draft choice RB Justin Jackson signed four-year contracts Friday, May 11. Financial terms were not disclosed.
|Footballguys view: Jackson is one of only six players in FBS history to have four straight seasons of at least 1,000 yards rushing. He had over 1,100 carries for Northwestern yet never missed a game due to injury. Jackson is not the biggest (199 pounds) or the fastest (4.50 40-yard dash), but he's tough and willing to grind inside. His 122 catches show that he can be quite successful as a receiver out of the backfield. The Chargers are looking for an upgrade or at least more competition from Austin Ekeler behind starter Melvin Gordon.|
Titans | Tennessee signs two UDFAs Fri May 11, 08:03 PM
Undrafted free-agent RB Dalyn Dawkins (Colorado State) and WR Cameron Batson (Texas Tech) signed with the Tennessee Titans Friday, May 11. Terms of the contracts were not disclosed.
|Footballguys view: The nephew of Hall of Fame safety Brian Dawkins, the younger Dawkins was a quick scatback for the Rams of Colorado State. Dawkins is a fantastic receiver out of the backfield, but at 5'8" 183 pounds he lacks the body armor of anything more than a part-time back.|
Texans | Houston signs three more picks Fri May 11, 07:10 PM
Houston Texans sixth-round draft choice TE Jordan M. Thomas and seventh-round draft choices LB Peter Kalambayi and CB Jermaine Kelly signed four-year contracts Friday, May 11. Financial terms were not disclosed.
|Footballguys view: Thomas is a big-bodied (280 pounds) target who used to be a wide receiver. He's still raw at the position and needs work as a blocker. However, his size alone could make him a decent red zone option for the Texans.|
Steelers | Terrell Edmunds works at different spots Fri May 11, 07:09 PM
Pittsburgh Steelers S Terrell Edmunds said he lined up at linebacker and safety during practice Friday, May 11.
|Footballguys view: The Steelers first-round pick in 2018 moved all over the field during his time in college with the Hokies. Edmunds has played cornerback, nickel corner, free safety and 'rover' over the last three years. It's not a surprise the Steelers are moving him around. His versatility has to be an attractive asset given the team selected him on the first day of the draft even though most felt he would be a mid-round pick.|
Colts | Indy adds Rakeem Nunez-Roches Fri May 11, 06:50 PM
The Indianapolis Colts claimed DE Rakeem Nunez-Roches off waivers from the Kansas City Chiefs Friday, May 11. The team also waived LB Joshua Perry.
|Footballguys view: The Colts now take over Nunez-Roches' entire $1.9 million salary for 2018. It's a bit of an odd pairing given the Colts defensive scheme, but we'll see if a fresh start can do Nunez-Roches some good.|
Rakeem Nunez-Roches player page

Seahawks | Stephen Morris waived Fri May 11, 06:46 PM
Seattle Seahawks QB Stephen Morris was waived Friday, May 11, according to a source.
|Footballguys view: The team has three quarterbacks on the roster after this move. Starter Russell Wilson with Austin Davis and Alex McGough competing for the primary backup job. Morris is mechanically sound and athletic, but his game isn't pro level and he's bounced around during his short time in the pros. He might surface as a camp arm somewhere.|
Patriots | New England signs five picks Fri May 11, 06:40 PM
New England Patriots fifth-round draft choice LB Ja'Whaun Bentley, sixth-round draft choices LB Christian Sam and WR Braxton Berrios and seventh-round draft choices CB Keion Crossen and TE Ryan Izzo signed four-year contracts Friday, May 11. Financial terms were not disclosed.
|Footballguys view: Berrios had a good week of practice at the Reese's Senior Bowl earlier this year. The Hurricanes receiver is flashy with the ball in his hands. He can contribute as a slot/underneath receiver or on special teams as a return man.|
