Bills | Shaq Lawson to have surgery Mon May 16, 02:50 PM
Buffalo Bills DE Shaq Lawson (shoulder) will undergo surgery on his injured shoulder Tuesday, May 17.
|Footballguys view: Lawson had previously said that he did not need shoulder surgery, but this was a problem that was flagged at the combine. The Bills are optimistic that Lawson will be ready for Week 1. However, the team could put him on the PUP list to begin the regular season if he's not yet fully recovered.|
Broncos | Virgil Green wants to prove himself Mon May 16, 02:47 PM
Denver Broncos TE Virgil Green said he wants to prove in training camp that he can be an every-down tight end. It was reported earlier that Green could have a bigger role in 2016.
|Footballguys view: Green is a better receiver than his career-high 12 receptions in 2016 shows. He was a reliable receiver for Colin Kaepernick in college at Nevada, but the Broncos have turned him into a strong blocking TE instead. Now, Green may be the lead TE for the Broncos in 2016 with only second-year TE Jeff Heuerman as his main competition. From a fantasy lens, we could see Green as a low-end TE2 if his production matches what Owen Daniels was able to get last year.|

Broncos | Bigger role for Virgil Green? Mon May 16, 02:08 PM
Denver Broncos TE Virgil Green could see more opportunities in 2016 after a career-high 12 catches last season, according to Mike Klis of 9news.com.
|Footballguys view: Good! The Broncos finally need to use Green as a receiver after utilizing him for years as a blocker. Green is an underrated receiver who could be featured in the Gary Kubiak TE-friendly offense.|

49ers | Chip Kelly impressed with Blaine Gabbert Mon May 16, 01:38 PM
San Francisco 49ers QB Blaine Gabbert has impressed new head coach Chip Kelly with his athleticism in offseason workouts. 'He's extremely athletic,' Kelly began. 'It's interesting, the three of them, if you look at Driskel, Blaine and Kap, they're all 6-4 plus, and all can run. All of them are at 4.6 (seconds in the 40-yard dash) or under 4.6, which is kind of rare to have three guys that can do the same thing. It's beneficial to you.'
|Footballguys view: Weep for the 49ers football fans. A rich history at QB which includes all-time greats like Joe Montana and Steve Young is now entrusted to....Blaine Gabbert. Perhaps Gabbert can fit in the Kelly system, but we are doubtful about his ability to be a quality starter. When healthy, Colin Kaepernick will be able to push Gabbert for the starting job.|

49ers | Carlos Hyde praised by head coach Mon May 16, 01:36 PM
San Francisco 49ers RB Carlos Hyde was praised by new head coach Chip Kelly recently. 'Carlos is a stud. He's been full-go since we started in the beginning of April,' Kelly said. 'Participated in everything. And he's as advertised. To have someone that size that is that agile, has that vision, it's really impressive to see him work every day. There have been no restrictions on him at all. He's full clear, 100 percent, and he's going. He's really good, we're really excited about him.'
|Footballguys view: Hyde is a one-cut back who should work nicely in the inside-zone, outside-zone option offense that Kelly implements. From a fantasy perspective, we see Hyde as a low-end RB2. His current ADP is RB18 (4.07) in 12-team PPR/flex leagues.|

Redskins | Junior Galette looking good Mon May 16, 01:03 PM
Washington Redskins LB Junior Galette (Achilles') looks 'fast as ever,' according to LB Ryan Kerrigan. Galette said he was around 80% healthy recently.
|Footballguys view: Achilles' injuries aren't as devastating as they used to be. Galette should be able to help the Washington defense as a part-time pass-rusher in 2016.|

Ravens | Vladimir Ducasse signs Mon May 16, 12:53 PM

NFL | Tom Coughlin ready to return? Mon May 16, 12:38 PM
Former New York Giants head coach Tom Coughlin said he's already considering a return to coaching and that his 'motor is starting to run again.' 'We'll see,' Coughlin said. 'It'll take two to tango. The 70-year-old man stuff will be a factor, and I'm sure they'll know this would be a three- and four-year thing.'
|Footballguys view: Forget popcorn, get your Werther's Originals ready. Coughlin has been an interesting head coach with the Jaguars and the Giants. He won two Super Bowl championships leading the Giants, but it will be interesting to see if any team wants to add him as Coughlin is no spring chicken.|
Broncos | Dekoda Watson signs Mon May 16, 11:50 AM
Free-agent LB Dekoda Watson (Patriots) signed an undisclosed deal with the Denver Broncos Monday, May 16.
|Footballguys view: The Broncos add some special teams help here. Although Watson is an outside linebacker, he may be best inside for the Broncos 3-4 defense.|

Ravens | Josh Johnson to Ravens Mon May 16, 11:16 AM
Free-agent QB Josh Johnson (Bills) signed with the Baltimore Ravens Monday, May 16, on an undisclosed deal.
|Footballguys view: Johnson is a bit of an odd fit at backup QB for the Ravens. Like former Ravens QB Tyrod Taylor, Johnson is an athletic passer who can make plays on the run. Johnson has been a journeyman for years in the NFL, and he's likely just a camp arm for the Ravens.|

Panthers | Three UDFAs join Panthers Mon May 16, 10:26 AM

Panthers | Brandon Boykin cut Mon May 16, 10:11 AM
Carolina Panthers CB Brandon Boykin was cut Monday, May 16.
|Footballguys view: Boykin just signed with the Panthers (on a one-year deal) earlier this year. In less the two months, the CB-desperate Panthers are sending him packing. This suggests there has to be some off-field problems with the vexing cornerback.|

Titans | Two undrafted FAs land with Titans Mon May 16, 10:03 AM

Titans | Zach Mettenberger waived Mon May 16, 09:47 AM
Tennessee Titans QB Zach Mettenberger was waived Monday, May 16.
|Footballguys view: Mettenberger has a big arm, but he can't throw it into the ocean standing on the beach. Some thought the Titans would trade away Mettenberger after they selected Marcus Mariota with the second-overall pick in the 2015 NFL draft. They signed Matt Cassel to back up Mariota, so Mettenberger became expendable.|

Cardinals | Tyrann Mathieu near extension Mon May 16, 08:29 AM
Arizona Cardinals FS Tyrann Mathieu is deep in negotiations for a contract extension Monday, May 16, that could make him the highest-paid safety in the league.
|Footballguys view: It's a risky move to sign Mathieu to big long-term money. He's torn his ACL twice since 2013 and is somewhat injury prone dating back to his college days at LSU. If healthy, Mathieu can make plays as a slot corner or a safety. The Cardinals should be creative with the way they get this deal done.|

Jets | Matt Forte not ready to slow down Sun May 15, 11:44 PM
New York Jets RB Matt Forte said he wants break the older running back stereotype, and his goal is to rush for 1,000 yards and catch as many passes as the offense allows.
|Footballguys view: The Jets offense is going to have questionable QB play--even if Ryan Fitzpatrick returns to the team. They should feature Forte as the centerpiece of the offense. Jets OC Chan Gailey should be able to find the best ways to use Forte as a runner and receiver. We see Forte as at least a low-end RB1 with his new team.|

Browns | Hue Jackson not rushing QB decision Sun May 15, 08:58 PM
Cleveland Browns QB Robert Griffin III or any other player won't be named the starting quarterback until they earn it, according to head coach Hue Jackson, but Jackson said that he expects to name the Week 1 start well before the season opener.
|Footballguys view: We're expecting Griffin to be the team's starter. Rookie Cody Kessler is making a strong impression in Browns camp, but training camp and the preseason will be able to separate the two.|

Bears | Leonard Floyd's weight not an issue Sun May 15, 08:50 PM
Chicago Bears LB Leonard Floyd's weight is not an issue and the team does not plan to have him bulk up, according to defensive coordinator Vic Fangio. 'The weight thing's not a big thing with me,' Fangio said. 'He's going to weigh somewhere between 230 and 235. That's just what he's going to weigh. We knew that before we drafted him. So it's not an issue.'
|Footballguys view: Floyd's lower body has always been too thin. It's not his weight, but where the weight is distributed. We'll see if he can add muscle to his lower body in an effort to hold up in the NFL.|
Redskins | Kendall Fuller expects to be ready Sun May 15, 05:29 PM
Washington Redskins CB Kendall Fuller (knee) said he expects to be a full participant when training camp begins.
|Footballguys view: The team is going to wisely take it easy on the talented rookie as he comes back from this knee injury. Fuller has not been cleared for on-field work at this point but is working with trainers on the side.|
Giants | Victor Cruz limited this offseason Sun May 15, 05:18 PM
New York Giants WR Victor Cruz (knee, calf) has received limited work during offseason workouts but hopes to be a full participant once training camp begins.
|Footballguys view: Not only is Cruz coming back from a major knee injury, but he also has this calf problem that plagued him last year to overcome. We won't feel too excited about his prospects in 2016 until we see him in camp and the preseason. Then, we'll have a better idea about his potential this season. Cruz said he believes he will be ready for the start of the 2016 season.|

Cardinals | Antonio Cromartie likely not a target Sun May 15, 05:02 PM
Free-agent CB Antonio Cromartie (Jets) likely will not be pursued by the Arizona Cardinals, in the opinion of ESPN.com's Josh Weinfuss.
|Footballguys view: There could be an opportunity for a veteran CB in the Cardinals starting lineup opposite Patrick Peterson. Justin Bethel could be that guy, but he's coming off April surgery to repair a foot injury. Third-round pick Brandon Williams (Texas A&M) is a raw prospect with starter's upside, but asking him to start early in his career is a stretch.|

Titans | Justin Hunter may be limited Sun May 15, 04:39 PM
Tennessee Titans WR Justin Hunter (ankle) probably will be limited when organized team activities start later this month.
|Footballguys view: A second-round pick in 2013, Hunter has been a disappointment to this point in his career. The Titans have gone out and added talent to the position including free agent Rishard Matthews and in the draft with Tajae Sharpe. In only nine games last year, Hunter had 22 catches for 264 yards and one touchdown.|

Titans | Dexter McCluster should have role Sun May 15, 04:37 PM
Tennessee Titans RB Dexter McCluster should have a role on offense in 2016 even though the team added RBs DeMarco Murray and Derrick Henry this offseason, according to head coach Mike Mularkey.
|Footballguys view: McCluster doesn't exactly fit their "exotic smashmouth" offense with Henry and Murray. However, if they use a change-of-pace back it should be McCluster. He may catch a few passes out of the backfield for the Titans, but we're not looking at him as a fantasy asset in 2016.|

Panthers | Braxton Deaver could earn spot Sun May 15, 03:26 PM
Undrafted free-agent TE Braxton Deaver (Duke) tried out for the Carolina Panthers at their two-day rookie minicamp. Head coach Ron Rivera said Deaver will be in consideration for one of the few remaining roster spots.
|Footballguys view: In rookie minicamp, Deaver has impressed the writers in attendance because of his consistent hands. Rivera said "We liked what he did. He assimilated nicely to our offense and seemed to understand and grip what we wanted to do mentally and did some good things athletically. He's going to be part of our discussion later today." Deaver caught 75 passes for 890 yards over his career with the Blue Devils.|
Jaguars | Blake Bortles in better situation Sun May 15, 02:36 PM
Jacksonville Jaguars QB Blake Bortles will be able to jump into offseason work right away on his own because he knows the offense now, as opposed to last year when he waiting for instruction, according to offensive coordinator Greg Olson.
|Footballguys view: Fantasy owners were super happy with Bortles last year as he finished the season as the 4th-best fantasy QB. Bortles was picked up late in most drafts and even as a waiver-wire addition in some leagues in 2015, but you won't be getting the same value this year. He had 35 touchdowns last year, and that's around where we have him projected again this season. Bortles needs to be more consistent, but he's a high-upside QB1 as a weekly starter.|
Blake Bortles player page
Raiders | Connor Cook impressing Sun May 15, 01:53 PM
Oakland Raiders QB Connor Cook will vie for the backup position with QB Matt McGloin. Cook impressed head coach Jack Del Rio at rookie minicamp. 'I think he's been outstanding,' Del Rio said. 'Obviously he is intelligent. He asks good questions. He's got arm talent. It's a matter of getting familiar [with] what we do and how we do it.'
|Footballguys view: Let's pump the brakes here. Cook fell to the fourth round for a reason--mainly accuracy problems and off-field concerns. At Michigan State, Cook never had 60 percent completions and even on passes from 1-10 yards he was the third-worst QB (in completion percentage) in this draft class. Dynasty owners are hording QBs, so Cook has been picked up in most deep dynasty leagues.|

Buccaneers | Peyton Barber could land roster spot Sun May 15, 09:35 AM
Tampa Bay Buccaneers RB Peyton Barber could crack the 53-man roster because of his low salary, and RB Mike James' limited impact the past three seasons. Barber was a coveted priority free agent and was lured to Tampa Bay because of thin depth at running back, and he received several repetitions during the Bucs limited full-team scrimmage sessions last week.
|Footballguys view: We are big Barber fans, partly because of his story off the field. He decided to enter the NFL draft after only starting nine games in his college career at Auburn. Barber chose to turn pro because his mother is homeless, and he wanted to help her get back on her feet. Barber rushed for 1,017 yards and scored 13 touchdowns in 2015 for Auburn.|
Bengals | Cincinnati to try out Joe Licata Sun May 15, 03:33 AM
Free-agent QB Joe Licata will work out with the Cincinnati Bengals on Monday, May 16.
|Footballguys view: Licata played his college ball for the University of Buffalo, and he is coming off a down 2015 season. He threw for 2,969 yards, 16 touchdowns and 15 interceptions in 2015 with a 62.4 completion percentage. Previous to that, Licata had many more TDs than INTs and teams are going to love his rocket arm. He's a camp arm, but Licata may be able to stick somewhere in the league.|
Bears | Chicago to try out Marquis Jackson Sun May 15, 03:00 AM
Free-agent DL Marquis Jackson, the brother of Jacksonville Jaguars DT Malik Jackson, is trying out with the Chicago Bears this weekend.
|Footballguys view: Marquis Jackson played in the Arena League for the Portland Thunder. He gets off the line quickly and has the hustle to make plays as a pass-rusher. Like Malik, Marquis has a large wingspan that helps him make up ground quickly. He's a longshot, but Bears coach John Fox worked with Malik for years when the two were with the Denver Broncos. Fox will know if he can get the best out of Marquis.|

Bills | Kolby Listenbee working on routes Sat May 14, 11:53 PM
Buffalo Bills WR Kolby Listenbee said he has more to offer than simply being a speed receiver, and he said he believes working with wide receivers coach Sanjay Lal will help him perfect his routes and timing and become a more all-around receiver.
|Footballguys view: Listenbee led TCU in yards-per-catch average (19.9) in 2015. He's a track star who plays football. We like the fact the rookie wants to be better as a route-runner, but his best asset is that long speed. He can take the top off the defense quickly, and Listenbee does a good job of tracking passes over his shoulder. He's not much of a run-blocker and is only going to be a sub-package player if he makes the 53-man roster.|
49ers | Colin Kaepernick to compete when healthy Sat May 14, 08:27 PM
San Francisco 49ers QB Colin Kaepernick (shoulder, thumb, knee) will compete with QB Blaine Gabbert for the starting quarterback job once training camp begins and Kaepernick is closer to full strength, head coach Chip Kelly said.
|Footballguys view: Gabbert has a good head start on Kaepernick, and it may be difficult for him to catch up. Not only does Kaepernick have to get healthy after three offseason surgeries, he also needs to put more weight on. Recent pictures of Kaeperncik show that he's really thin right now compared to his previous physique. Add in the fact that some think Kaepernick doesn't want to be there and we think this is looking more and more like Gabbert's job.|

Bears | Jay Cutler to have same offense Sat May 14, 08:14 PM
Chicago Bears QB Jay Cutler will work with an offense that has the same shell and language as last season, according to offensive coordinator Dowell Loggains, and Loggains said his strong relationship with Cutler will help offset the departure of Adam Gase.
|Footballguys view: Cutler was able to thrive under Gase last year. Having the same system for him this year (even with Gase gone) should greatly help Cutler continue his solid play. From a fantasy perspective, Cutler should perform like a top-20 QB and a QB2/bye week filler.|

Browns | Josh McCown could still be kept Sat May 14, 03:32 PM
Cleveland Browns QB Josh McCown could still stay with the Browns if he does not win the starting quarterback position, according to director of football operations Sashi Brown.
|Footballguys view: The draft has come and gone, so any QB-needy team has already filled the void. McCown is just a "bridge" QB for a franchise in transition at the position. Perhaps if there is an injury in training camp, the Browns would be able to deal the veteran quarterback. Robert Griffin III should start, McCown should be his primary backup and rookie Cody Kessler should be the team's third-string, developmental QB.|

Chargers | Hunter Henry impressing Sat May 14, 03:11 PM
San Diego Chargers TE Hunter Henry has been dominant in team drills at the Chargers' rookie minicamp. The rookies will mix in with the veterans Monday, May 16.
|Footballguys view: Henry is an impressive player, so it's not a surprise that he's make a positive mark early in rookie minicamp. Antonio Gates is still the main TE for the Chargers, but he could get phased out at some point this year to make room for Henry in the offense. He reminds us of Jason Witten (Cowboys) because of his smooth athleticism and ability to work well on underneath routes.|
Colts | Unlikely to rejoin Dwight Freeney Sat May 14, 02:47 PM
Free-agent DE Dwight Freeney (Cardinals) probably won't be coming back to the Indianapolis Colts despite his desire to play in 2016, according to ESPN.com's Mike Wells.
|Footballguys view: Never say never, but signs seem to indicate that Freeney isn't going to return to the Colts. Freeney is not the same player he used to be and has 12 sacks over the last three years with two different teams (Chargers, Cardinals).|
Dwight Freeney player page
Bears | Kevin White compared to Colt Sat May 14, 01:42 PM
Chicago Bears WR Kevin White was compared to Indianapolis Colts Andre Johnson by Bears wide receivers coach Curtis Johnson. Johnson coached Johnson at the University of Miami. 'He's very similar to him. They're both big and physical and fast,' Johnson said. 'That doesn't all go together sometimes. White has hand similar to [former Indianapolis Colts] WR Reggie Wayne. So he was one of those guys where when you looked at the draft and watched television, you say this guy is going to be a bona fide player.'
|Footballguys view: We're not buying the comparison. He's more like DeAndre Hopkins, if healthy and playing up to his potential. White has tremendous inside release to get open on tight coverage at the line of scrimmage. He wins at the point of the catch and does a good job of tracking passes over his shoulder. We'll see if White can start producing at an expected level after missing all of his rookie season in 2015.|

Falcons | Leon Hall not an option Sat May 14, 12:55 PM
Free-agent CB Leon Hall (Bengals) will not be signing with the Atlanta Falcons, according to a source. The Falcons did meet with Hall earlier this offseason.

Browns | Ricky Stanzi trying out Sat May 14, 11:22 AM
Free-agent QB Ricky Stanzi (Lions) is participate in the Cleveland Browns' rookie minicamp this weekend on a tryout basis.

Browns | Coach happy with Cody Kessler Sat May 14, 11:09 AM
Cleveland Browns QB Cody Kessler performed well during practice Friday, May 13, but it is too early to say if Kessler will compete for the starting quarterback job, according to head coach Hue Jackson. Kessler showed good accuracy and footwork during practice and was comfortable under center and in the shotgun formation.
|Footballguys view: Kessler was an...interesting...pick for the Browns in the third round of the 2016 NFL draft. He had intriguing upside and potential in college at USC, but Kessler never seemed to fully flourish in his skill set. He's a safe QB who does not like to challenge the edge of a defense. Kessler is accurate in the pocket (70.4 percent) on intermediate routes, and he could be Hue Jackson's new version of Andy Dalton. If he works out, we see Kessler as a poor man's version of Dalton.|
Raiders | Karl Joseph not on the field Sat May 14, 11:05 AM
Oakland Raiders SS Karl Joseph (knee) did not participate in practice Friday, May 13, because he is recovering from a torn anterior cruciate ligament.
|Footballguys view: We're excited about this rookie. He's an enforcer who can roam the field and has a nose for the ball. Joseph said his rehab is on schedule and expects to be ready for training camp.|
Raiders | Jihad Ward practices Friday Sat May 14, 11:03 AM
Oakland Raiders DE Jihad Ward (knee) fully participated in practice Friday, May 13, and said he will not need another surgery on his knee.
|Footballguys view: Ward gives the Raiders yet another strong pass-rusher for their defense. He can get to the QB from either end spot, and Ward can even move inside to tackle on certain downs. The team will monitor him closely as they go through the offseason.|

Tennessee Titans RB Derrick Henry is going to be a 'monster' for the offense, TE Delanie Walker said, and C Ben Jones said he 'can't wait' to see what Henry does behind Tennessee's improved offensive line.
|Footballguys view: Henry is a monster as he's huge, fast and physical when he builds a head of steam. The rookie is going to work in the Titans "Thunder and Thunder" backfield with veteran DeMarco Murray. Henry is a two-down thumper who reminds us of former Giants RB Brandon Jacobs.|
