Seahawks | Russell Wilson wants free-agent money    Thu Jul 16, 05:20 PM

Seattle Seahawks QB Russell Wilson has not yet entered free agency, but he does want to be paid like that is the case. He also wants a fully guaranteed contract.

Footballguys view: If a deal does not get done by the time training camp starts, Wilson could very likely be given the franchise tag next season that could be worth around $25 million. Things may not be close at this point, but there's a long way to go.

Seahawks | Russell Wilson, SEA not close on contract    Thu Jul 16, 05:12 PM

Seattle Seahawks QB Russell Wilson and the organization are still not close in their negotiations on an extension. Negotiations should increase leading up to training camp, but are expected to cease once training camp commences.

Footballguys view: Wilson wants as much money as possible, and the Seahawks want to save a little money. There's plenty of time left as the Seahawks can slap Wilson with the franchise tag next offseason if need be.

Browns | Browns could ride hot hand at RB    Thu Jul 16, 04:57 PM

Cleveland Browns RBs Isaiah Crowell, Terrance West and Duke Johnson are expected to make up a three-headed committee this season in the backfield. Offensive coordinator John DeFilippo has said there won't be a specific method for how touches are distributed, but Crowell is expected to begin the season as the starter.

Footballguys view: Johnson is the change-of-pace back in this rotation. He can make people miss in the open field, and he's a good receiving option out of the backfield. Crowell is the best runner of the group and can work as a battering ram for the Browns on early downs.

Browns | Isaiah Crowell more confident    Thu Jul 16, 04:31 PM

Cleveland Browns RB Isaiah Crowell said he feels more confident heading into his second season. The second-year running back said he felt too anxious last year and that he can be more relaxed now that he has a year of professional under his belt.

Footballguys view: Crowell is a talented runner between the tackles. He can dominate an opponent and grind them down as the game wears on. However, it looks like the Browns may use rookie Duke Johnson as the third-down back in 2015. This limits Crowell's fantasy upside. He's a good RB3 with upside in non-PPR leagues.

Steelers | DeAngelo Williams slims down    Thu Jul 16, 03:18 PM

Pittsburgh Steelers RB DeAngelo Williams has lost some weight this offseason since head coach Mike Tomlin asked Williams to report to training camp at 220 pounds or less. Williams said he is currently at the target weight after working with a nutritionist this offseason.

Footballguys view: We have yet to hear about a final suspension for Le'Veon Bell. Whether it's three games or one game, Williams will be filling in for Bell while he's out. Williams gets a fresh start with the Steelers this year, and while starting for a suspended Bell he could put up RB2/flex numbers.

Ravens | Michael Campanaro could be slot WR    Thu Jul 16, 03:08 PM

Baltimore Ravens WR Michael Campanaro (quadriceps) could be used as a slot receiver if he is healthy for the regular season.

Footballguys view: Campanaro will be competing with guys like Marlon Brown for that third spot on the depth chart. Opposite Steve Smith, there will be a competition between rookie Breshad Perriman and Kamar Aiken (Brown could be in the mix too). With Marc Trestman as the team's new offensive coordinator, the Ravens will put the ball in the air a lot. Fantasy owners in deeper leagues should be monitoring this group behind Smith.

Cardinals | Carson Palmer working out    Thu Jul 16, 01:42 PM

Arizona Cardinals QB Carson Palmer (knee) has been working out with WR John Brown in California since the end of offseason workouts and said that he not had any problems with his surgically repaired knee. QB Drew Stanton and TEs Troy Niklas and Ifeanyi Momah have also participated in some of the workouts, while Palmer said WRs Larry Fitzgerald and Michael Floyd could take part in some future workouts.

Footballguys view: The Cardinals can make a run in the postseason if Palmer is healthy. If not, the team can play great defense but they'll struggle to move the ball offensively. It sounds like Palmer's recovery has gone well, and he'll be good to go for the start of the regular season.

Vikings | Adrian Peterson to see time on third down    Thu Jul 16, 01:30 PM

Minnesota Vikings RB Adrian Peterson believes he will be used more often on third downs this season.

Footballguys view: The Vikings will use Peterson early and often, so fantasy owners should have no hesitation drafting him in his normal (early first round) spot.

Seahawks | Russell Wilson talks may have deadline    Thu Jul 16, 01:16 PM

Seattle Seahawks QB Russell Wilson has been having contract extension talks with the Seahawks since the beginning of the offseason, but the talks likely will stop once training camp begins.

Footballguys view: This is pretty much common around the league. It's a soft deadline as the two sides can negotiate next offseason if need be. There's a chance the Seahawks could put the franchise tag on Wilson after this season as the negotiatons continue.

Bears | Eddie Royal could be returner    Thu Jul 16, 01:07 PM

Chicago Bears WR Eddie Royal could be a candidate for the kick returner job this season if the coaching staff is comfortable with him in that role.

Footballguys view: Royal is going to be an asset as a receiver for the Bears as a slot guy behind Alshon Jeffery and (eventually) Kevin White. Before White is ready to go, Royal may serve as the secondary target opposite Jeffery. Either way, he's going to be able to contribute as a return man too. His current ADP in 12-team PPR leagues (WR68, 14.03) makes him an intriguing late-round flier for fantasy owners.

Giants | Marcus Harris had microfracture    Thu Jul 16, 12:47 PM

New York Giants WR Marcus Harris (knee) had microfracture surgery after the team's minicamp last month. Harris was waived by the Giants earlier this week, and he'll likely land on Injured Reserve if he isn't claimed. Harris was expecting to undergo a routine arthroscopic surgery on the knee, but the damage was worse than expected. He'll miss five to six months.

Footballguys view: Harris was already a longshot to make the final roster. The fourth-year UDFA is likely done playing pro football.

Jaguars | Julius Thomas should help in red zone    Thu Jul 16, 12:46 PM

Jacksonville Jaguars TE Julius Thomas is expected to help the offense in the red zone since he caught 13 passes and nine touchdowns in the red zone last season.

Footballguys view: That's a big reason why the team brought Thomas in. Last year, the Jaguars ranked last in touchdowns (13) and completion percentage (39.1%) in the red zone. Thomas is capable of creating mismatches due to his athleticism. His basketball skill set comes through in the red zone when he can box out defenders and high point passes for six points.

Ravens | Justin Forsett played well in 2014    Thu Jul 16, 12:25 PM

Baltimore Ravens RB Justin Forsett averaged 5.4 yards per carry last season and also had 17 rushes of more than 20 yards, which was the most among running backs in both categories.

Footballguys view: Forsett is a talented and efficient runner who can take advantage of the space he's given. Last year, Forsett ranked second (behind former Cowboys RB DeMarco Murray) in rushing yards before contact with 901 yards. His average of 3.83 yards before contact per rush led all running backs in 2014. The Ravens OL will help blast open holes for Forsett once again this year.

Bears | Matt Forte adds muscle    Thu Jul 16, 12:15 PM

Chicago Bears RB Matt Forte has bulked up this offseason in order to prepare for a heavy workload this season. Forte received a lot of work in the running and passing game last season.

Footballguys view: Forte is unlikely to catch as many passes as he did last year, but he's still going to be a cornerstone for the franchise. Under offensive coordinator Adam Gase, we should see Forte get plenty of work on the ground. He's currently coming off the board near the end of the first round in fantasy drafts.

Jets | Chris Ivory sees time at WR    Thu Jul 16, 12:14 PM

New York Jets RB Chris Ivory lined up at wide receiver at times this offseason when the team worked out of a spread formation.

Footballguys view: The Jets are going to have an incredibly creative offense under new offensive coordinator Chan Gailey. It's not a shock that they would move Ivory around the formation to create mismatches. His current ADP is RB40 (9.01) in 12-team PPR leagues.

Broncos | More on Demaryius Thomas' deal    Thu Jul 16, 11:12 AM

Updating previous reports, Denver Broncos WR Demaryius Thomas will receive $22 million in 2015. He will receive an $11 million signing bonus, $6.5 million in roster bonus and a $4.5 million salary, which are all guaranteed. He has a fully guaranteed $13 million salary in 2016. His $8.5 million salary in 2017 is guaranteed against injury, and the full salary becomes guaranteed in the league year. In 2018, he has a a $4 million option, plus an $8.5 million salary. None of this money is guaranteed. He has a $14 million salary in 2019, which isn't guaranteed. There are no incentives or escalators in the contract.

Footballguys view: Most of the guaranteed money comes in the first two years of the contract. It just so happens that Peyton Manning has two years left on his deal--and there's a feeling he could be playing through 2016 so long as he stays healthy. Thomas is a cornerstone player who can help the team now and in the post-Manning era.

NFL | Dan Connolly retires    Thu Jul 16, 08:58 AM

Free-agent OG Dan Connolly (Patriots) announced his retirement Thursday, July 16.

Footballguys view: Still only 32 years old, Connolly is concerned about his long-term health. He's had four documented concussions during his pro career. There's interest from other teams out there, but it looks like Connolly's playing days are done.

Jets | Chris Ivory's workload has been limited    Thu Jul 16, 08:45 AM

New York Jets RB Chris Ivory's workload was limited by the former Jets coaching staff because they were worried about him getting injured. Ivory has also struggled in pass blocking.

Footballguys view: Note that last sentence. Struggling in pass-protection means you're going to see Ivory as a two-down thumper. Stevan Ridley is going to make a strong push for the starting job when healthy. We might see Bilal Powell mixed in as the team's third-down back no matter who the starter is. Stay tuned.

NFL | Evan Mathis talks to heat up soon    Thu Jul 16, 08:40 AM

Free-agent OG Evan Mathis (Eagles) said negotiations with teams will heat up in a week or two. 'Exactly what my options are aren't as clear as they will be in a week or two,' Mathis said.

Footballguys view: Mathis is one of the best in the game at his position, so there's likely to be more than a few teams interested in the free agent. Once we get closer to training camp, the teams willing to pay for him will come forward with interest. He won't be out of work for long.

Seahawks | Russell Wilson not worried about contract    Wed Jul 15, 08:58 PM

Seattle Seahawks QB Russell Wilson reiterated Wednesday, July 15, he's not worried about his looming contract issue. 'I love Seattle, it's a great city,' Wilson continued. 'I'm going to play my butt off every day. That's all I know, and we'll see what happens.' Wilson's rookie contract expires at the end of the 2015 season.

Footballguys view: Contract negotiations between the Seahawks and Wilson seem to be an an impasse right now. We've heard everything from "they'll move on" to "he's going to play baseball" leading up to this point. Let's just pump the brakes on all that. The Seahawks found a franchise quarterback in the third round of the 2012 NFL draft, and they've built a champion in part because of his small price tag. Now, they'll have to pay up to keep him.

Broncos | Demaryius Thomas in elite company    Wed Jul 15, 08:21 PM

Denver Broncos WR Demaryius Thomas is 1-of-3 wide receivers in NFL history with 1,400 yards and 10-plus touchdowns in three consecutive seasons. Marvin Harrison and Jerry Rice are the only other two players to have accomplished the feat.

Footballguys view: Thomas is a special wide receiver--one of the best in the game, and now he's compensated as such. He'll be catching passes from Peyton Manning over the next year or two. After that, Thomas will help the production of whatever quarterback the Broncos have under center.

Falcons | Julio Jones, Falcons to begin talks soon?    Wed Jul 15, 06:53 PM

Atlanta Falcons WR Julio Jones and the Falcons could begin discussions on a long-term deal in the near future now that Dallas Cowboys WR Dez Bryant and Denver Broncos WR Demaryius Thomas have agreed to long-term extensions.

Footballguys view: There have been reports coming out of Atlanta that indicate a deal between the Falcons and Jones could get done before the start of training camp. These new contracts for Dez Bryant and Demaryius Thomas will only help establish a road map for the Falcons and Jones to follow in negotiations.

Bills | Tyrod Taylor given praise    Wed Jul 15, 06:43 PM

Buffalo Bills QB Tyrod Taylor received a vote of confidence from former teammate Baltimore Ravens FS Terrence Brooks. Brooks said Taylor possesses versatility and speed that makes him worthy of being a starting quarterback. Taylor is competing with QBs EJ Manuel and Matt Cassel for the starting quarterback position this offseason.

Footballguys view: Taylor has to be considered a sleeper in the Buffalo QB competition, and he's certainly an interesting player to keep an eye on. He's got a rocket arm (with little control) and is supremely gifted athletically. Scrambling QBs (even those with accuracy problems...looking at you Tebow) can be valuable fantasy assets--even on a run-heavy team like Buffalo. Watch this competition unfold during training camp and the preseason.

Broncos | Demaryius Thomas has been working    Wed Jul 15, 04:10 PM

Denver Broncos WR Demaryius Thomas had already been sent the offensive playbook and practice video from organized team activities and minicamp this offseason.

Footballguys view: Thomas will show up at training camp and take a few days to get acclimated to the new offense. We don't believe he'll have any problem getting up to speed. With new long-term contract in hand, Thomas is a sure-fire WR1 for fantasy owners. He's got a current ADP of WR5 (1.10) in 12-team PPR leagues.

Cowboys | Dez Bryant has been elite    Wed Jul 15, 03:41 PM

Dallas Cowboys WR Dez Bryant has tallied 5,424 yards and 56 touchdowns on 381 catches over the past five seasons.

Footballguys view: There's no question that Bryant is one of the best receivers in the game today. Bryant's three consecutive seasons of 1,000 yards receiving and 10 or more touchdowns ties a team mark set by Terrell Owens (2006-2008).

Broncos | Demaryius Thomas agrees to deal    Wed Jul 15, 03:40 PM

Denver Broncos WR Demaryius Thomas has agreed to a five-year, $70 million deal that includes $43.5 million guaranteed, according to a source.

Footballguys view: Wow. Things come together quickly at deadlines in the NFL. Dez Bryant got his deal, and just like that--Thomas gets his deal that is close to what his Cowboys counterpart received. The Broncos are focusing on a championship run this year, but Thomas will get to help them in the post-Manning era too. Based on reports out of Denver, it looks like most of Thomas' guaranteed money comes in the first two years of his deal.

Cowboys | Dez Bryant gets long-term contract    Wed Jul 15, 03:18 PM

Dallas Cowboys WR Dez Bryant will receive $45 million guaranteed in his new five-year, $70 million deal.

Footballguys view: This is a fair price for the Cowboys...and for Bryant. He was threatening to hold out into the season, but that is not going to happen. Bryant is a top-flight fantasy wide receiver who is going off the board at the end of the first round in most drafts. Now, the market is set for this level of wide receiver. Expect contracts for A.J. Green and Julio Jones to be of a similar structure.

New England Patriots PK Stephen Gostkowski agreed to terms with the Patriots Wednesday, July 15, on a four-year deal worth around $17 million.

Footballguys view: Arguably the best kicker in the league, Gostkowski is now the highest-paid at his position. He had already signed his one-year franchise tender, but the two sides were able to work out a long-term agreement. His current ADP is K1 (13.02) in 12-team PPR leagues.

Dallas Cowboys RB Darren McFadden (hamstring) is expected to compete for the starting running back job but will enter training camp as the No. 2 back in part because he missed some offseason workouts because of an injury.

Footballguys view: McFadden has always been incredibly talented, but injuries have held him back. He could thrive behind the monstrous offensive line in Dallas, but lack of durability is always a concern. Joseph Randle is likely to be the starter with McFadden serving as his backup.

Indianapolis Colts TE Dwayne Allen plans to play at 255 pounds, which is 13 pounds lighter than he was last season.

Footballguys view: A lighter Allen could be a more explosive player, and perhaps it will help him stay healthier. He's going to once again split time at tight end with Coby Fleener. Allen is coming off the board at TE14 (12.10) in 12-team PPR leagues.

Vikings | Jarius Wright may be No. 3 WR    Wed Jul 15, 12:18 PM

Minnesota Vikings WR Jarius Wright is expected to enter training camp as the leading candidate for the No. 3 wide receiver job. Wright showed good chemistry with QB Teddy Bridgewater last season and should have a solid role in the passing game this season.

Footballguys view: Wright is quick, fast and agile after the catch. He can make defenders miss in the open field, and he plays with a fearless nature when running routes over the middle. Wright can stretch the field, and he's a big play waiting to happen. However, as a fantasy asset he can be unpredictable. Wright had only three games in 2014 where he had over 49 receiving yards (132,123,60).

Chiefs | Justin Houston signs new deal    Wed Jul 15, 11:58 AM

Kansas City Chiefs LB Justin Houston signed a six-year, $101 million deal that includes $52.5 million guaranteed Wednesday, July 15.

Footballguys view: This contract is the richest in Chiefs franchise history and the largest deal ever for a linebacker in NFL history. Houston is certainly worth it. Over the last 43 games, Houston has 43 sacks. Last year, he nearly broke the single-season record for sacks (half a sack short) with 22 sacks. He's one of the best pass-rushers in the game, and Houston is now locked up for the long term.

Patriots | Tom Brady will sue if given any games    Wed Jul 15, 09:16 AM

New England Patriots QB Tom Brady will challenge an appeal ruling of missing any games in federal court, according to NFLPA sources.

Footballguys view: The battle here is far from over. The ruling on Brady's suspension could come down before the start of training camp, and many are expecting his four-game sentence to be reduced. However, even if he's suspended only one game there is legal action to be taken by Brady after that.

Falcons | Leonard Hankerson to have big role?    Wed Jul 15, 12:53 AM

Atlanta Falcons WR Leonard Hankerson could be used as the No. 3 wide receiver if the team brings rookie WR Justin Hardy along slowly. Hankerson thrived in offensive coordinator Kyle Shanahan's system in Washington, so Hankerson could have a chance to re-ignite his career.

Footballguys view: Hankerson could catch about 25-30 passes this year as the team's WR3 behind Roddy White and Julio Jones. White isn't the same player he used to be, so Hankerson might even be a little more involved than we're projecting him to be. He's not fantasy relevant for most leagues.

Falcons | Justin Hardy could be eased in    Wed Jul 15, 12:52 AM

Atlanta Falcons WR Justin Hardy was selected to be a long-term fixture in the offense, and he has gotten off to a good start in offseason workouts. However, with WR Leonard Hankerson in the mix, Hardy could be eased into the No. 3 role.

Footballguys view: Hardy has talent, but he'll have to adjust to the pro game before we see his full potential. At East Carolina during his senior season, almost 70 percent of his receptions went for first downs. The guy can move the chains, and Hardy can make difficult catches seem routine. Hardy is not a speed demon, and he needs to prove that he can gain separation at the pro level.

Falcons | Tevin Coleman fighting to start    Wed Jul 15, 12:52 AM

Atlanta Falcons RB Tevin Coleman has started he plans on being the starter, and he will be in a position battle with RB Devonta Freeman for the starting job in training camp and beyond. Both appear to be schematic fits, and both have the potential to be effective in the NFL.

Footballguys view: Coleman was one of our favorite running backs in this draft class. He's a speedy back who can score from anywhere on the field. Coleman is a threat to score anytime he touches the ball, and he can take advantage of tired defenses late in games. He'll compete with Freeman for the starting job, but the team is likely to use some form of RBBC.

Atlanta Falcons RB Devonta Freeman has stated he plans on being the starter, but he will be battling rookie RB Tevin Coleman for the starting job in training camp and beyond. Both appear to be schematic fits, and both have the potential to be effective in the NFL.

Footballguys view: Freeman is a talented player, and his balanced/explosive running style is a good fit for the Kyle Shanahan offense. He's instinctive between the tackles, and Freeman can change direction without losing much speed. Freeman is competing with Coleman for the starting job, and the battle should last through training camp and the preseason. Stay tuned.

Cowboys | Dez Bryant still has leverage    Tue Jul 14, 09:19 PM

Dallas Cowboys WR Dez Bryant won't necessarily lose leverage in his quest for a new contract if Wednesday, July 15's deadline passes without a long-term deal. Bryant could miss games at the start of the season and force the Cowboys to realize his importance. Bryant could then land the deal he has been seeking, while also compensating for the approximately $755,000 per week he would miss out on by sitting.

Footballguys view: What if the team doesn't struggle as much as Bryant thinks without him? Then what happens to his leverage? Missing out on $755,000 per week just doesn't make a lot of sense. The Cowboys are already hesitant to pay a big-money contract to Bryant, and there's a line of thinking where they'll pay even more to make up for the money he'd miss out on by holding out? That's just not sensible. Bryant seems to be insistent on holding out, so fantasy owners need to take note when drafting him.

Titans | Offset language for Marcus Mariota?    Tue Jul 14, 07:57 PM

Tennessee Titans QB Marcus Mariota's rookie contract will contain offset language, according to team president Steve Underwood. Underwood said it's important to have the offset language in place because it sets the precedent for the next round of players' contracts.

Footballguys view: The Titans really can't afford for their rookie quarterback (and starter) to miss any time in training camp. He played in a wide open spread offense in college at Oregon, and the transition to the NFL will come with a steep learning curve. The Titans are trying to prevent Mariota from double dipping in the event he is released before his rookie contract expires. Number one overall pick Jameis Winston agreed to offset language in his deal, but Mariota doesn't seem to be up for that. Stay tuned.

Broncos | Demaryius Thomas an elite receiver    Tue Jul 14, 07:45 PM

Denver Broncos WR Demaryius Thomas is second in the NFL with 28 100-yard receiving games in the regular season and postseason combined since 2011. He had 10 100-yard games in 2014, with seven coming in consecutive weeks. Thomas' 226 yards in a win over the Arizona Cardinals last year set the single-game franchise record, and his 1,619 receiving yards set a single-season franchise mark. The last three years with QB Peyton Manning at quarterback for Denver, Thomas has had three straight years with at least 92 catches, 1,430 receiving yards and 10 touchdowns. He's the third player in league history with three straight seasons of at least 1,400 yards and at least 10 scores, joining Jerry Rice and Marvin Harrison.

Footballguys view: Numbers don't lie (in this instance), Thomas is an elite receiver. However, what is the expected production level after Peyton Manning retires? The Broncos must take that into consideration. Also, the wide receiver position is chock full of incredible talent (look at the last two rookie classes). This negotiation is much more complicated than "Thomas puts up great numbers" and that's why Thomas may not get the deal he wants from the Broncos.
