Jaguars | Bernard Pierce could face suspension    Fri Mar 20, 01:27 PM

Jacksonville Jaguars RB Bernard Pierce will face a suspension for violating the league's personal conduct policy with his DUI arrest this week. Pierce will be given a chance to compete for playing time with RBs Toby Gerhart, Denard Robinson and Storm Johnson in 2015. Pierce has struggled in the NFL since his rookie season in 2012, and he's mainly been hampered by a list of injuries including back, ankle, knee, shoulder, thigh, toe and head ailments.

Footballguys view: Pierce has a chance to be part of a three-man rotation, especially if the Jaguars use Gerhart more as an H-back.

Vikings | Teddy Bridgewater working with teammates    Fri Mar 20, 01:23 PM

Minnesota Vikings QB Teddy Bridgewater is working out in California with Vikings TE Kyle Rudolph, RB Jerick McKinnon, WR Charles Johnson and TE Brandon Bostick. McKinnon and Rudolph are rooming together at Rudolph's Newport Beach, Calif., home and are taking a no-nonsense approach to their training. Rudolph organized the group event.

Footballguys view: It's no mystery, we love Bridgewater. He's smart, accurate and known as a football junkie. Why he wasn't a top-5 pick last year is completely baffling. Moving on from that, his upside is that of a top-12 fantasy QB. We'll see if he can make a big jump in year two.

Vikings | Jerick McKinnon healthy    Fri Mar 20, 01:14 PM

Minnesota Vikings RB Jerick McKinnon (back) is fully recovered from back surgery and has left for Southern California to train. He is preparing as though he will be a starting running back but acknowledged the job belongs to Vikings RB Adrian Peterson, provided Peterson returns to the team. McKinnon noted that he needs to learn how to help keep his body healthy, too.

Footballguys view: McKinnon transitioned from a college quarterback to an NFL running back last year. As he gets more comfortable with his new position, McKinnon should perform better. He averaged 4.8 yards per carry in 2014 and chipped in with 27 receptions as a rookie. Peterson's status with the team will drastically alter the outlook for McKinnon in 2015.

Vikings | Adrian Peterson won't come cheap    Fri Mar 20, 12:38 PM

Minnesota Vikings RB Adrian Peterson, who won't be released by the team, is scheduled to make $12.75 million in 2015, and the feeling is that he won't come cheaply in a trade. The Vikings are believed to be looking for at least a second-round pick and another piece in a potential trade.

Footballguys view: Peterson's agent, Ben Dogra, may be trying to facilitate a trade by effectively telling all 31 other teams that the only way to acquire his client is through a trade.

Colts | Nate Irving agrees    Fri Mar 20, 12:12 PM

Free-agent LB Nate Irving (Broncos) agreed to terms on an undisclosed deal with the Indianapolis Colts Friday, March 20.

Footballguys view: Irving is a two-down thumper who can stuff the run. He's better in coverage than some give him credit for, but he's not a player who truly excels on passing downs. Injuries and inconsistencies have held back Irving during his pro career. We'll see if a change of scenery helps him play more consistently in 2015.

Colts | Erik Walden injured in reported attack    Fri Mar 20, 11:44 AM

Indianapolis Colts LB Erik Walden (arm) was slashed across his arm during an alleged altercation with his ex-girlfriend, Erica Palmer. Palmer reportedly believed Walden was seeing someone else and staked out his home. Walden, with whom Palmer has two children, reportedly arrived with another woman, when Braselton, Ga., police said Palmer entered the residence carrying a firearm and baseball bat.

Footballguys view: Um, okay then. We're glad nobody was seriously hurt here.

Rams | Nick Foles didn't see trade coming    Fri Mar 20, 11:33 AM

St. Louis Rams QB Nick Foles said he didn't know the Philadelphia Eagles were looking to trade him, despite rumors swirling about their intentions, and the first time he learned about the move was the moment Eagles head coach Chip Kelly called him to say Foles had been dealt to the Rams.

Footballguys view: He'll be alright. In fact, Foles is a better fit for the Rams offense than he is the Eagles offense. We'll see how he works in a more traditional offense in 2015.

Giants | George Selvie agrees with Giants    Fri Mar 20, 10:36 AM

Free-agent DE George Selvie (Cowboys) agreed to a one-year, $1.4 million deal with the New York Giants Friday, March 20. The deal includes a $200,000 signing bonus.

Footballguys view: Selvie will be reunited with former USF teammate Jason Pierre-Paul. The veteran defensive end started 29 of 32 games for the Dallas Cowboys over the last two years. His career really took off in Dallas, and he compiled 10 sacks during his time in Dallas. The Giants are hopeful he can continue to work well as a part-time pass-rusher.

Chargers | Joe Mays visits team    Fri Mar 20, 03:06 AM

Free-agent LB Joe Mays (Chiefs) took a visit to the San Diego Chargers, according to team sources.

Footballguys view: Mays hasn't attracted a ton of interest on the open market. He's a two-down thumper who is a liability in coverage.

Giants | No extension yet for Eli Manning    Fri Mar 20, 02:55 AM

New York Giants QB Eli Manning has not had contract extension talks with the team yet, but co-owner John Mara said something would 'obviously be done at some point.'

Footballguys view: No rush here. We should see an extension for Manning that allows him to end his career with the Giants.

Vikings | Terence Newman discussing deal?    Fri Mar 20, 02:30 AM

Free-agent CB Terence Newman (Bengals) has discussed contract figures with the Minnesota Vikings, but the sides are not close to a deal yet.

Footballguys view: Just give it time. Newman would be reunited (again) with Mike Zimmer if (when) he signs with the Vikings. They worked together in both Cincinnati and Dallas.

Titans | Jameis Winston to visit Tennessee    Thu Mar 19, 09:55 PM

Former Florida State QB Jameis Winston will visit the Tennessee Titans and have a private workout with the team sometime around March 31.

Footballguys view: The Titans are taking a look here, but even with the second-overall pick Winston will be gone. It's the worst kept secret in the league that the Buccaneers have zeroed in on Winston as the first pick.

NFL | Shane Ray impresses at pro day    Thu Mar 19, 09:37 PM

Former Missouri DE Shane Ray was clocked in the mid-4.5 range during his 40-yard dash attempts at his school's pro day Thursday, March 19, and one AFC defensive coach in attendance said that Ray is the 'most explosive' edge rusher in the 2015 NFL Draft.

Footballguys view: Ray is one of the most impressive pass-rushers in this draft class. He gets off the snap quickly, can bend around the edge, and he has good closing burst to the quarterback.

Cowboys | Nick Hayden returning to Dallas    Thu Mar 19, 09:26 PM

Dallas Cowboys DT Nick Hayden signed a one-year deal Thursday, March 19, to return to the team.

Footballguys view: Hayden is a big run-stuffer who has consistently played for the Cowboys during his career. He has started all 32 games of his Cowboys career, and he led all defensive linemen in tackles last season with 52.

49ers | Chase Thomas has torn ACL    Thu Mar 19, 09:21 PM

San Francisco 49ers LB Chase Thomas (knee) suffered a torn anterior cruciate ligament in his right while working during the offseason.

Footballguys view: Thomas is a special teams player who is now likely to miss the entire season because of this injury. It's yet another blow to the group of linebackers in San Francisco after the retirement of Patrick Willis and Chris Borland.

Seahawks | D'Anthony Smith signs    Thu Mar 19, 07:23 PM

Free-agent DT D'Anthony Smith (Seahawks) signed an undisclosed deal with the Seattle Seahawks Thursday, March 19.

Footballguys view: Another big body in the middle for the Seattle defense. Smith spent the 2014 season on IR, and he's struggled to stay healthy during his career.

Dolphins | J.D. Walton joining roster    Thu Mar 19, 06:44 PM

Updating a previous report, free-agent C/G J.D. Walton (Giants) will sign an undisclosed contract with the Miami Dolphins.

Footballguys view: Message to all teams facing the Dolphins: zero-gap blitz this guy if he's on the field. Walton failed to impress during his time with the Broncos or the Giants. In Miami, he'll work as a backup center behind Mike Pouncey.

Seahawks | Ahtyba Rubin signing    Thu Mar 19, 06:16 PM

Free-agent DT Ahtyba Rubin (Browns) is signing an undisclosed deal with the Seattle Seahawks Thursday, March 19, according to a source.

Footballguys view: Rubin is a big run-stuffer who can plug up the middle. The Browns weren't hot and heavy to bring him back after finishing 32nd against the run in 2014. We'll see if a change of scenery helps Rubin play better.

Bears | Dante Rosario re-signed    Thu Mar 19, 06:15 PM

The Chicago Bears re-signed TE Dante Rosario to a one-year deal Thursday, March 19. The financial terms were not disclosed.

Footballguys view: Nothing to see here people. Rosario will continue to work as a reserve tight end behind Martellus Bennett. For the third time in his career (Bears, Broncos) Rosario will be reunited with John Fox.

Broncos | Reggie Walker signs    Thu Mar 19, 05:48 PM

Free-agent LB Reggie Walker (Chargers) signed an undisclosed deal with the Denver Broncos Thursday, March 19.

Footballguys view: Just a depth signing here. Walker is a special teams player who can thump as a run-defender. The Broncos wanted more depth and better competition at the linebacker position.

Vikings | DuJuan Harris signs    Thu Mar 19, 05:15 PM

Free-agent RB DuJuan Harris (Packers) signed an undisclosed deal with the Minnesota Vikings Thursday, March 19.

Footballguys view: An interesting move for Minnesota. Their backfield may not be done changing just yet. We know they're unlikely to release Adrian Peterson, but they may trade him...or they may just keep him. Harris may lack the durability of a featured back, but he is a good receiver out of the backfield with speed to make the corner.

Colts | Daniel Adongo signs tender    Thu Mar 19, 05:13 PM

Indianapolis Colts exclusive-rights free-agent LB Daniel Adongo signed his tender offer Thursday, March 19. Financial terms of the deal were not disclosed.

Footballguys view: The Colts will hold onto the former rugby player now, though he is still a large work in progress. His impact this season will be limited, at best.

Jaguars | Bernard Pierce claimed by Jags    Thu Mar 19, 04:33 PM

Free-agent RB Bernard Pierce (Ravens) was claimed off waivers from the Baltimore Ravens by the Jacksonville Jaguars Thursday, March 19.

Footballguys view: Some wondered if recent off-the-field issues might lead teams to pass on Pierce, but clearly the Jaguars figured that he could be a cheap option with upside. The backfield is so-so, and if he can stay out of trouble, there is the chance he might return to his form from 2013 and before. Pierce could work in a RBBC with Denard Robinson. The Jaguars are moving Toby Gerhart to more of an H-back role.

Steelers | Open to re-signing James Harrison    Thu Mar 19, 03:51 PM

Free-agent LB James Harrison (Steelers) is still an option for the Pittsburgh Steelers, but the team likely will not try to re-sign him until the summer because they do not need him to participate in offseason workouts.

Footballguys view: The Steelers could use the experience but it's likely Harrison would be in a reduced role due to age. Still the 36-year old linebacker could well contribute quite a bit for one last year. Watch out for the Titans here as well. We could see Harrison following Dick LeBeau to Tennessee.

Jets | NYJ comfortable with QBs    Thu Mar 19, 03:36 PM

New York Jets QBs Ryan Fitzpatrick and Geno Smith are expected to compete for the starting job during training camp, and general manager Mike Maccagnan said the team is comfortable with them as their top two quarterbacks.

Footballguys view: They sort of have to be since there are no better options available in free agency and they could miss out on one of the top two quarterbacks in the draft - both of whom carry risk anyway. Fitzgerald is a decent short-term option while Smith has shown he can win a lot - at the end of a season. Unfortunately for the Jets, so far he plays badly enough early that winning at the end doesn't mean anything. We'll see if new OC Chan Gailey can light a spark.

Falcons | Tony Moeaki signed    Thu Mar 19, 03:22 PM

Free-agent TE Tony Moeaki (Seahawks) signed with the Atlanta Falcons Thursday, March 19. Terms of the contract were not disclosed.

Footballguys view: Moeaki has had some moments but has largely been unimpressive in part because the last two seasons were injury-riddled. He has potential, but he cannot stay on the field (he had this problem in college too). Can he stay healthy? If he can he might be a very productive fantasy TE2 at least. But injuries make him a shaky TE3 at best. He'll split time with Jacob Tamme in 2015.

Titans | Byron Stingily agrees to terms    Thu Mar 19, 03:22 PM

Free-agent OT Byron Stingily (Titans) agreed to terms with the Tennessee Titans Thursday, March 19, on a multi-year deal. Financial terms were not disclosed.

Footballguys view: Stingily will return to the team for which he has started 9 (out of 20) games in four seasons. Eight of those starts were at right tackle and he could be in line for that spot this year with the departure of Michael Oher.

Chargers | Chris Hairston visiting    Thu Mar 19, 02:57 PM

Free-agent OT Chris Hairston (Bills) is meeting with the San Diego Chargers Thursday, March 19, according to a source.

Footballguys view: Hairston barely played for the Bills last year despite a ton of talent. He will get a shot somewhere and the Chargers are desperate for offensive line help. The question is, can he live up to the potential finally, wherever he lands?

Link to story

Colts | Demarco Cox signs    Thu Mar 19, 02:46 PM

Free-agent OT Demarco Cox signed an undisclosed deal with the Indianapolis Colts Thursday, March 19.

Footballguys view: Indianapolis has offensive line issues. They spent a bit lavishly on Andre Johnson and Frank Gore but they need to improve the o-line to protect Andrew Luck. That said, Cox is converting from being a basketball player. Cox played college basketball for Ole Miss from 2010 to 2014 before later transferring to George Tech for his final year of eligibility. This isn't a move that looks like it will pay off any time soon.

Jets | No official visit for Osi Umenyiora    Thu Mar 19, 02:33 PM

Free-agent DE Osi Umenyiora (Falcons) didn't have an official visit with the New York Jets Wednesday, March 18, according to general manager Mike Maccagnan. Umenyiora was only visiting to say hi to new head coach Todd Bowles.

Footballguys view: Jets fans were hoping for a little schadenfreude if they stole a Giants player, even one who the team didn't keep last off-season. Alas, that seems as if it won't happen this time.

Chargers | Philip Rivers not on trade block    Thu Mar 19, 02:31 PM

San Diego Chargers QB Philip Rivers likely will not be traded even though he plans to play out his current contract, according to sources.

Footballguys view: The team wants to sign Rivers to a long-term contract and could use the franchise tag on him next offseason. Stranger things have happened, but we'd be shocked to see Rivers ever wear another uniform.

Link to story

Lions | P.J. Williams visits    Thu Mar 19, 02:00 PM

Florida State CB P.J. Williams met with the Detroit Lions Thursday, March 19.

Footballguys view: The Lions have a decent secondary but Williams is a solid cover corner with good recovery who can work the slot or outside. You can't have too many corners in today's NFL.

Browns | Cleveland to sign Dwayne Bowe    Thu Mar 19, 01:49 PM

Free-agent WR Dwayne Bowe (Chiefs) is signing with the Cleveland Browns, according to a source.

Footballguys view: Hopefully a change of location helps Bowe finally (consistently) reach the pinnacle of his ability. As it stands, he has mostly been underwhelming and now again finds himself in a situation with a shaky quarterback. Can he help elevate Connor Shaw, Johnny Manziel or Josh McCown? He's never been that guy before and we think his impact in fantasy will be limited again by his situation as well as his inability to raise the level of his game.

Buccaneers | Sterling Moore agrees    Thu Mar 19, 01:35 PM

Free-agent CB Sterling Moore (Cowboys) agreed to terms with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers Thursday, March 19, according to a source. Terms of the deal were not disclosed.

Footballguys view: Moore stepped in for the Cowboys last season when Morris Claiborne was hurt, starting nine games and playing nickel corner for Dallas. The Cowboys didn't tender him at all (he was technically a restricted free agent) so he became an unrestricted free agent and the Bucs were happy to give him a shot. If he can replicate his 2014, it could be a very nice upgrade for Tampa Bay.

Jets | NY to attend Jameis Winston's pro day    Thu Mar 19, 01:20 PM

Florida State QB Jameis Winston will have his school's pro day later this month attended by the New York Jets and general manager Mike Maccagnan.

Footballguys view: The Jets will look at Winston because you never know what will happen at the top of the draft. Just because Tampa Bay implies they like him doesn't mean anything - it is, after all almost 'smokescreen month' aka April. They'll do their due diligence and make sure that 1) he's what he appears to be on film and 2) is not the chucklehead his off-field issues make him out to be.

  Jets | Michael Vick won't be re-signed    Thu Mar 19, 01:17 PM

Free-agent QB Michael Vick (Jets) won't be re-signed by the New York Jets this offseason.

Footballguys view: With Geno Smith, Ryan Fitzpatrick and a likely rookie quarterback, it's no shock Vick is gone. Especially since he was unprepared whenever it seemed his number was called. Can he find a new landing spot? It's hard to see after he looked like he cashed out halfway through last season. Although it was the Jets and a terrible Jets team at that - so maybe we shouldn't be too hard on him.

Dolphins | Jordan Cameron the go-to TE    Thu Mar 19, 01:15 PM

Miami Dolphins TE Jordan Cameron will be the team's go-to tight end now that they didn't bring back TE Charles Clay, who signed an offer sheet with the Buffalo Bills. Cameron made the Pro Bowl in 2013 and has more athleticism than Clay, but Cameron has also dealt with multiple concussions.

Footballguys view: Cameron is tremendously talented, but at this point seems prone to concussions. That's the big gamble both for the Dolphins and fantasy owners. If he goes down, they just have guys like Dion Sims to step up. If he stays healthy though, this is a tight end heavy offense and he could put up a lot of points. That's a big 'if' but one worth exploring.

Steelers | Dri Archer will have role in offense    Thu Mar 19, 01:08 PM

Pittsburgh Steelers RB Dri Archer will have a role on offense that will take advantage of his speed, but people have to be patient with his development, according to offensive coordinator Todd Haley. Archer could also be used as a kick returner next season.

Footballguys view: Archer is a very versatile back, but because of his size, that versatility will almost always have to do with speedy routes and screens and never much between the tackles. Assume LeVeon Bell returns to 100 percent, Archer will still be very limited and have inconsistent fantasy value.

Falcons | Atlanta eyeing Devin Funchess    Thu Mar 19, 12:11 PM

Michigan TE Devin Funchess worked out for the Atlanta Falcons this week as the draft approaches. Funchess is projected to be taken in the second round this year, and he has played both tight end and receiver. The Falcons had a league-low 241 yards from the tight end position in 2014, according to ESPN Stats and Information. New offensive coordinator Kyle Shanahan is used to getting plenty of production from his tight ends.

Footballguys view: While they signed Jacob Tamme, he's not a long-term fix. Funchess is a decent tight end prospect in a weak class. As the piece mentions, Shanahan needs a more prolific tight end, and Funchess can catch the ball. He could get a lot of work as a rookie.

Jets | James Brewer agrees to terms    Thu Mar 19, 11:33 AM

Free-agent OT James Brewer (Giants) agreed to terms on a one-year deal with the New York Jets Thursday, March 19, according to a source. Financial terms were not disclosed.

Footballguys view: The Jets are looking to add depth and that's really all Brewer is right now. Despite the problems the Giants had on the offensive line in 2014, Brewer only played in two games last season. He started eight games in 2013 and didn't look special. Maybe he gets a chance with the Jets given he can play guard or tackle and they need the bodies. But he's yet to show anything remarkable.

Free-agent QB Tarvaris Jackson (Seahawks) and C J.D. Walton (Giants) are scheduled to meet with the Miami Dolphins Thursday, March 19.

Footballguys view: Walton would be an interesting pickup, though he was shaky for the Giants last season. Jackson is no more than a third-string backup at best and maybe not even that.

Dolphins | Miami will not match Charles Clay offer    Thu Mar 19, 11:20 AM

Miami Dolphins transition free-agent TE Charles Clay's five-year, $38 million offer sheet he signed with the Buffalo Bills will not be matched by the Dolphins, according to a source. Clay will now become a member of the Buffalo Bills.

Footballguys view: Once Jordan Cameron was in the house, that house had writing on the wall for Charles Clay. Clay is a fine tight end and might have been helpful with Cameron having suffered multiple concussions. If that rears its ugly head again this season, the Dolphins have to hope Dion Sims, Jake Stoneburner or another depth tight end can step up. We like Sims to emerge if Cameron is down.

Jets | Marcus Mariota an option for Jets    Thu Mar 19, 11:16 AM

Oregon QB Marcus Mariota has not been ruled out as an option for the New York Jets first-round draft choice, according to general manager Mike Maccagnan.

Footballguys view: BREAKING: WATER IS WET. Given Geno Smith is Geno Smith and Ryan Fitzpatrick may not be able to play until training camp or preseason, everything should be an option for the Jets at quarterback. The only issue might be Tennessee, who can trade out for another team coveting Mariota or the Titans themselves might select him. Keep in mind, even if he becomes a Jet, Mariota may be best served sitting for a year.

Jets | Ryan Fitzpatrick will be ready for camp    Thu Mar 19, 11:12 AM

New York Jets QB Ryan Fitzpatrick (leg) will be limited during offseason workouts but will be ready for the start of training camp, according to general manager Mike Maccagnan.

Footballguys view: That's good, and as he knows Chan Gailey's offense well, it shouldn't be a big deal. He's not the long-term answer for the Jets but he could stand in for Marcus Mariota or another rookie quarterback while that guy gets his feet wet.

Panthers | Alan Ball signs with Carolina    Thu Mar 19, 11:00 AM

Footballguys view: While it wasn't the biggest need for Carolina, it will help the defense keep things close over the next season and for a reasonable price.

Falcons | Jacob Tamme signs with Atlanta    Thu Mar 19, 10:57 AM

Free-agent TE Jacob Tamme (Broncos) signed an undisclosed deal with the Atlanta Falcons Thursday, March 19.

Footballguys view: Tamme isn't a long-term answer at the position, but he'll certainly help. Buried behind Julius Thomas in Denver, Tamme might have more left in the tank than some think. The Falcons have been looking for a good tight end since Tony Gonzalez retired, and now they have one. Tamme isn't going to set the world on fire, but he could be a solid TE2 for fantasy owners.
