Seahawks | Marshawn Lynch expected to return? Fri Feb 20, 07:31 PM
Seattle Seahawks RB Marshawn Lynch is expected to return next season because of his close relationships with offensive line coach Tom Cable and running backs coach Sherman Smith, according to NFL Network analyst Michael Robinson. Robinson and Lynch are close friends.
|Footballguys view: We'll see. It's hard to tell what is going on in Lynch's head, but it does make you feel as though all the retirement talk was more a ploy for more cash than anything else. We'll see how this plays out but even his return won't change the fact that they will need a replacement for him down the road. Could Christine Michael or Robert Turbin be the answer? Or will they start making arrangements by drafting a new face?|
Cowboys | Dez Bryant a candidate for tag Fri Feb 20, 07:25 PM
Dallas Cowboys impending free-agent WR Dez Bryant remains a candidate for the franchise tag if the team can't work out a long-term extension with him. The Cowboys still have concerns about Bryant's off-the-field issues.
|Footballguys view: It won't make him happy, but we're betting it won't shock him either. Bryant is a spectacular wide receiver and will remain one of the best in the NFL regardless of where he plays. All involved seem to want that to be Dallas, but the money is the issue, as always.|
Patriots | Stevan Ridley ahead of schedule Fri Feb 20, 06:49 PM
New England Patriots impending free-agent RB Stevan Ridley (knee) is about four weeks ahead of schedule in his recovery from a torn anterior cruciate ligament. Ridley hopes to be able to return to the field in May.
|Footballguys view: Good news for the Patriots and gives them some leverage in Shane Vereen's contract talks. Vereen wants too much money ($5 million a year reportedly) and if Ridley is coming back and looks good, New England has options.|

NFL | Maxx Williams checks in at Combine Fri Feb 20, 06:22 PM
Minnesota TE Maxx Williams, who weighed in at 6-3 7/8, 249 pounds, ran a 4.77-second 40-yard dash Friday, Feb. 20, at the NFL Scouting Combine. 'He is the only tight end I have in the first two rounds,' NFL media analyst Mike Mayock said. He said Williams is athletic -- albeit not explosive -- and has 'really good hands.' Williams also had a 4.37-second 20-yard shuttle and a 34.5-inch vertical jump Friday.
|Footballguys view: Williams is a 'move' tight end who makes some big plays. He performed as well as we expected him to and could see a lot of interest. While not great as an all-around tight end who can block as well as catch, Williams cuts into the mold of successful tight ends like Rob Gronkowski, Jimmy Graham and more recently, Julius Thomas.|
Buccaneers | Jameis Winston wants to play for TB Fri Feb 20, 06:04 PM
Florida State QB Jameis Winston said he would like to play for the Tampa Bay Buccaneers and believes he has the trust of head coach Lovie Smith. 'I think it would be a privilege to play in Tampa, period, with the Florida State fan base and everything I have been involved with in the state of Florida. Coach Smith speaking highly of me, that already lets me know I'm a part of their program,' Winston said. 'I already have a trust factor in with him, and now all I have to do is accept his trust and gain his trust to help him out.'
|Footballguys view: There's a good chance he'll get his wish of course, as he has been linked to the Bucs for a long time. They'll do their due diligence on his off-field issues, but they may have a head start on that given they are down in Tampa. Staying in Florida could be a mixed bag for Winston. On the one hand he will stay in a somewhat familiar environment and be close to friends and family. On the other hand he'll be close to temptations he has sometimes struggled with not succumbing to. Tampa needs a quarterback though because no matter what they say, Mike Glennon is not in their long term plans. Winston sounds like he is in the lead to be 'their guy.'|
Rams | St. Louis will talk with Jameis Winston Fri Feb 20, 05:10 PM
Florida State QB Jameis Winston is scheduled to meet with the St. Louis Rams during the NFL Scouting Combine.
|Footballguys view: They seem all in on Sam Bradford, but maybe they're looking to fall in love? We don't know what Bradford can do and on top of that, the guy cannot stay healthy. Would it be a shock if they selected a quarterback and moved on from Bradford? Not really. They'd still need to do the same for Winston that they need to do for any quarterback - get him some reliable weapons.|
Saints | Jameis Winston to talk with Saints Fri Feb 20, 05:08 PM
Florida State QB Jameis Winston is scheduled to meet with the New Orleans Saints during the NFL Scouting Combine.
|Footballguys view: Well, this is just kicking the tires, right? Sure, Drew Brees isn't getting any younger, but you aren't spending the pick to get Winston to back him up for a few years. This is a curious meeting, but the Combine is the time when teams get to meet guys they have no interest in, just to get their measure.|
Browns | Jameis Winston to meet with Cleveland Fri Feb 20, 05:05 PM
Florida State QB Jameis Winston is scheduled to meet with the Cleveland Browns during the NFL Scouting Combine.
|Footballguys view: The Browns would have to move quite a bit to get Winston, and like the rumors they could like Marcus Mariota, it's not a great sign that their 2014 first rounders were good selections. On top of it, this is a team with a ton of holes. Is spending two draft picks (at least) to move up for a quarterback the best use of their picks?|
Buccaneers | Bucs interested in Jameis Winston Fri Feb 20, 04:52 PM
Florida State QB Jameis Winston is scheduled to meet with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers during the NFL Scouting Combine.
|Footballguys view: BREAKING: WATER IS WET. We did know this already. There is a possibility they will keep Mike Glennon and use him to back up Winston or they might trade him off. Either way, this comes as a shock to nobody. The Bucs have great weapons in Mike Evans and Vincent Jackson, so Winston could be very successful there, very quickly.|
Bears | Chicago may pursue David Harris Fri Feb 20, 04:51 PM
New York Jets impending free-agent LB David Harris is expected to receive interest from the Chicago Bears if he hits the free-agent market, according to a source.
|Footballguys view: The Bears have a lot of defensive problems, but Harris will only be a portion of a fix. He could be a good rotational guy and John Fox does know his way around a defense though. It wouldn't be a bad landing spot for him.|

Falcons | David Harris expected to be target Fri Feb 20, 04:46 PM
New York Jets impending free-agent LB David Harris is expected to receive interest from the Atlanta Falcons if he hits the free-agent market, according to a source.
|Footballguys view: The Jets might be interested in bringing Harris back if the price is right, but he isn't worth the money on a huge contract. Atlanta is looking to reboot their defense again, and Harris could at least be a solid rotational player for them.|

Seahawks | Kam Chancellor avoids surgery Fri Feb 20, 04:43 PM
Seattle Seahawks SS Kam Chancellor (knee) will not need surgery on his injured knee, according to head coach Pete Carroll.
|Footballguys view: Good news for the Seahawks although hopefully this injury won't occur again down the road because he didn't get surgery. We expect Chancellor to be ready to go by the start of the season though.|

Seahawks | Seattle made offers to Marshawn Lynch Fri Feb 20, 04:42 PM
Seattle Seahawks impending free-agent RB Marshawn Lynch has received some big offers from the Seahawks, and the team continues to work on signing him, according to head coach Pete Carroll.
|Footballguys view: It's one more chapter to a very unusual story that is Lynch. He might really be thinking about retirement and at the end of the day even if he comes back, Seattle has to make sure they have another plan. Lynch seems to have no real idea what he's doing and we haven't seen enough of Christine Michael and Robert Turbin to know if they are reliable.|

NFL | Jameis Winston's shoulder strong Fri Feb 20, 04:14 PM
Updating an ongoing story, Florida State QB Jameis Winston (shoulder) has every intention of throwing at the NFL Scouting Combine this weekend. The weakness in Winston's nerve in his shoulder is a common ailment for pitchers, according to Dr. James Andrews, and Winston played two seasons of baseball in college. His quarterback coach, George Whitfield, said that Winston has been getting stronger in recent workouts, and the injury was news to him. Winston went through measurements Thursday, Feb. 19, and opted to skip testing on the bench press Friday, Feb. 20.
|Footballguys view: It sounds like all the concern was nothing but hot air. Winston should perform well at the Combine, but that is to be expected. He has the pocket passing skills to step right into an offense. It's the character concerns which sink his value right now.|
Redskins | Amari Cooper talks with Redskins Fri Feb 20, 04:12 PM
Alabama WR Amari Cooper said he has talked with the Washington Redskins at the NFL Scouting Combine.
|Footballguys view: Washington has some good weapons for their quarterback (whoever that is) to throw to, with Pierre Garcon and DeSean Jackson in house. They might kick the tires on Cooper, but it seems unlikely they would pull the trigger on a wide receiver in the first round.|
Browns | Marcus Mariota an option for Browns? Fri Feb 20, 04:12 PM
Oregon QB Marcus Mariota could be an option for the Cleveland Browns in this year's draft if they are willing to package their two first-round picks to move up to snag him, according to quarterback guru George Whitfield. Whitfield has worked with both Mariota and Browns QB Johnny Manziel. Both quarterbacks have also been coached extensively by Cleveland quarterbacks coach Kevin O'Connell. O'Connell could push for the team to move up and draft Mariota. Mariota said he'd welcome the chance to play for any NFL team, including the Browns.
|Footballguys view: Really, can you think of any worse message than trading up for a quarterback? Might as well call their 2014 first round a complete waste of time at that point. Mariota has the potential to play well, but will need patience - not a strong suit of the Browns front office by all appearances. This is also an offense with a staggering lack of weapons, which is not beneficial to Mariota's (or Manziel or Shaw's) development. The Browns have a lot of needs, and spending both picks for Mariota might not be the wisest choice, no matter how tempting.|
Seahawks | Zach Miller should be ready Fri Feb 20, 03:41 PM
Seattle Seahawks TE Zach Miller (ankle) should be ready for the start of the regular season, according to head coach Pete Carroll. Miller is recovering from ankle surgery during the 2014 season.
|Footballguys view: Miller is a decent tight end, but the Seahawks need an upgrade at all their pass-catching positions. Miller has shown some skills before but has never been a big part of the passing offense.|

NFL | Jameis Winston expected to throw Fri Feb 20, 02:53 PM
Updating a previous report, Florida State University QB Jameis Winston (shoulder) is still expected to throw at the NFL Scouting Combine. Winston has a "back-shoulder nerve issue" that is not a problem. Tests showed no weakness.
|Footballguys view: Teams will like to hear and see this. One of the things scouts and GMs said after the last combine was that they liked quarterbacks and players who were eager to compete at the Combine. Not throwing isn't a deal-breaker, but it helps. Even if a player performs poorly, they still have Pro Day and team visits to turn things around. The alternative is Teddy Bridgewater, who didn't throw at the Combine, looked average at his Pro Day and saw his stick dip.|
Redskins | GM remains high on Robert Griffin Fri Feb 20, 02:31 PM
Washington Redskins QB Robert Griffin III will enter the 2015 season as the team's starting quarterback, and general manager Bruce Allen thinks Griffin's ceiling in the NFL remains high. Griffin missed five games last year with a dislocated ankle, and Allen said Griffin must stay healthy in order to realize his potential. 'There's never been a question about him watching film,' Allen said. 'He is motivated. He's a (25-year-old) man who is still growing and learning the NFL game. We've seen him, a couple years ago, play at the highest of highs. Maybe it spoiled us a little bit to expect that all the time.'
|Footballguys view: After being left out of a letter to the ticket holders, Griffin has to be wondering what the future holds for him and Washington. He has never been able to recover the form he had in his rookie season, though he has had flashes. His injuries have made people think maybe he has to totally change his style and remain in the pocket. He didn't seem a particularly good fit for Washington's new offense in 2014 and never was able to look comfortable since the injury which took him out of the playoff game his rookie year. We're anxious to see what he has in store for OTAs and what the team truly thinks about him and his role.|

Rams | HC in Sam Bradford's corner Fri Feb 20, 02:30 PM
St. Louis Rams QB Sam Bradford (knee) is coming back-to-back seasons of anterior cruciate ligament tears in his knees, but head coach Jeff Fisher is betting on Bradford to be the team's quarterback in 2015. Fisher said that Bradford remains ahead of schedule in his rehab and is working at the team's complex every day. Bradford won't be used any differently in training camp or the preseason in order to try and prevent another injury.
|Footballguys view: It sounds like the Rams are all in on Bradford, so now the question is whether they can get him some better weapons to throw to. Bradford has had moments where he looked worthy of the No. 1 pick, but not consistently and he's been injured so often that we're at t he end of his contract with no real idea of his true worth.|

NFL | Todd Gurley declines knee exams Fri Feb 20, 02:29 PM
Georgia RB Todd Gurley (knee) did not allow team doctors to examine his surgically repaired knee during the NFL Scouting Combine. Gurley said he has been on a six- to nine-month timetable in terms of his rehab from a torn anterior cruciate ligament he suffered in November. He likely will need to have his knee examined closer to the 2015 NFL Draft. It is believed that Gurley has been impressive during the combine.
|Footballguys view: While he may have been impressive in interviews, it is a bit odd that he won't allow doctors to take a look at his leg at the Combine. That's kind of the point of it. You can't help but wonder if it will make teams suspicious. That said, if healthy, Gurley is one of the top two backs in the upcoming draft and could go in round 1.|
Bengals | OC takes blame for Andy Dalton's struggles Fri Feb 20, 01:52 PM
Cincinnati Bengals QB Andy Dalton and the passing game must improve, but offensive coordinator Hue Jackson took some of the blame for Dalton's struggles in 2014. 'I'll be the first to tell all of you that I don't think I did a good enough job of getting him to where I think he needs to be,' Jackson said. 'That's one of my biggest responsibilities in my mind this upcoming year. He played well at times. There were times where there was inconsistency, and I've got to get him over that hump.' Jackson knows Dalton must cut down on his turnovers, and the infusion of healthy receivers next year should help.
|Footballguys view: Well the easy and snappy comeback would be 'great what explains the other years?' Dalton has struggled off and on for years and collapses as soon as it's time for the playoffs. That's not entirely a coordinator issue as it stands when you look beyond last season. Jackson may have hurt things in 2014, but there are larger concerns about what Dalton is capable or that have little to do with his offensive coordinator.|

NFL | Jameis Winston threw Tuesday Fri Feb 20, 01:37 PM
Updating a previous report, Florida State University QB Jameis Winston (shoulder) threw the football for 90 minutes Tuesday, Feb. 17. Winston had between 120-150 throws, and has shown no sign of weakness according to private quarterbacks coach George Whitfield.
|Footballguys view: That's a good sign considering reports of weakness in his shoulder. We'll wait to hear what the tests he is undergoing show, since it's not like his private coach has anything to gain by being totally honest if there is a problem. But we (and the top five teams in the draft) have our fingers crossed.|
NFL | Jameis Winston undergoes testing Fri Feb 20, 01:36 PM
Florida State University QB Jameis Winston (shoulder) has had further testing to determine why he is experiencing weakness in his throwing shoulder.
|Footballguys view: Many teams from the top end of the draft will be keeping a very close eye on this news, as the 'why' of it will tell them if it's something which can be fixed, how long it will take or if it's a long term degenerative condition. It could certainly bump Marcus Mariota ahead of Winston if the prognosis is bad.|
Giants | No talks with Jason Pierre-Paul yet Fri Feb 20, 12:55 PM
New York Giants impending free-agent DE Jason Pierre-Paul has not had any contract talks with the team to this point.
|Footballguys view: This should be interesting as the Giants need some pass rush help, but JPP wasn't all that exceptional a pass-rusher anymore. How much are they willing to pay him and how much is left in the tank? We suspect there won't be a lot of money earmarked for Pierre-Paul, but he might also find the market for his services aren't great either so a hometown discount could be forthcoming.|

Seahawks | Jeremy Lane suffered torn ACL Fri Feb 20, 12:38 PM
Seattle Seahawks CB Jeremy Lane (wrist, knee) suffered a compound fracture of his wrist and a torn anterior cruciate ligament in his knee during the Super Bowl.
|Footballguys view: I may not have been doctor at the time of the Super Bowl but I did stay at a Holiday Inn Express the night before, so I was confident that this injury was bad when we saw it. We knew it would be a long journey to come back from the injury. As has been said before, for a corner to injure his arm is less serious than a leg injury, so we are optimistic.|
Raiders | Might not be interested in Julius Thomas Fri Feb 20, 12:32 PM
The Oakland Raiders might not have as much interest in impending free agent tight end Julius Thomas (Broncos) as originally thought. An Oakland native, many expected Thomas to land with the Raiders if the Broncos let him leave in free agency.
|Footballguys view: The Raiders have a lot of needs and sinking a ton of money into a tight end might not seem prudent. He certainly would be a big help to second-year quarterback Derek Carr, but the Raiders could also choose to address that need in the draft.|

Broncos | Taking a long look at top TEs Fri Feb 20, 11:59 AM
The Denver Broncos are taking a longer look at both TE Maxx Williams (Minnesota) and TE Clive Walford (Miami) at the 2015 NFL draft. Either one could be an option for Denver in the first round with the 28th overall pick.
|Footballguys view: There's a strong chance that Julius Thomas will leave via free agency, which means the Broncos need to find a replacement. Williams is a good 'move' tight end who needs to improve his route-running, though he had some exceptionally long receptions at Minnesota. Walford is a bit more well-rounded, but not as athletic as Williams and with a lower ceiling. He's more versatile in that he can block exceptionally well though and would be a help with protecting Peyton Manning.|

Chiefs | Have interest in Keith Mumphrey Fri Feb 20, 11:56 AM
The Kansas City Chiefs have interviewed wide receiver Keith Mumphrey (Michigan State) at the 2015 NFL Scouting Combine.
|Footballguys view: While Mumphrey wouldn't be the answer to fixing Kansas City's passing offense from a weapons standpoint, he could be a solid addition overall. He runs very good routes and has solid size, but he lacks the athleticism to be a high-level productive wideout. He might get drafted but he's going to be a long-shot to be an impact player.|

Jaguars | Have strong interest in Julius Thomas Fri Feb 20, 11:46 AM
The Jacksonville Jaguars could have strong interest in impending free agent tight end Julius Thomas (Broncos).
|Footballguys view: The Jaguars need playmakers they can count on for Blake Bortles to take the next step and while they did all right with some of the receivers they picked up last year, a tight end like Thomas would be a huge help for their second-year quarterback. Of course, how effective is Thomas without Peyton Manning throwing the ball? We think Thomas would be solid, but probably not quite as good as he was with Manning - especially if he is the biggest attention-getter in Jacksonville's offense.|

Packers | A.J. Hawk had surgery Fri Feb 20, 10:46 AM
Green Bay Packers LB A.J. Hawk (ankle) had surgery to remove several bone spurs from his ankle after the season. Hawk lost weight to try and compensate for the injury later in the season.
|Footballguys view: Hawk still hasn't quite fulfilled the promise he once held and the Packers are going to have to look at other options to fill the middle of the defense at some point. As it stands though, Hawk might be able to play at a higher level than he did last season if he's 100% healthy.|

Giants | G-Men haven't met with Jason Pierre-Paul Fri Feb 20, 10:22 AM
New York Giants impending free-agent DE Jason Pierre-Paul's agents haven't met with the Giants at the NFL Scouting Combine. ESPNNewYork.com's Dan Graziano feels that's a telling sign.
|Footballguys view: The Giants have more than a few things to work out in terms of free agents. The big questions here are how much will Pierre-Paul ask for and how much can the Giants afford to lose one of the only (normally) good pass rushers they have and that pass rush was not so good last season as it is. Will removing JPP - even a declined JPP - a wise thing for a defense which needs to bounce back quickly.|

Vikings | Adrian Peterson wants out Fri Feb 20, 08:43 AM
Minnesota Vikings RB Adrian Peterson hasn't softened his stance, despite general manager Rick Spielman and head coach Mike Zimmer reaching out to him. Peterson wants a fresh start somewhere else. Peterson said lack of trust is a major issue in his uneasiness to return.
|Footballguys view: Okay, here we go! The team has no intentions of cutting him, so a trade would be the only option. Peterson is going to have interesting trade value because of the off-field problems he had last year. Any team that gets him is going to get an instant boost to the ground game. Stay tuned.|

Falcons | Devonta Freeman built for scheme Fri Feb 20, 08:36 AM
Atlanta Falcons RB Devonta Freeman fits well in offensive coordinator Kyle Shanahan's scheme, according to head coach Dan Quinn. 'My first impression: I can feel the quickness,' Quinn said of Freeman. 'In our outside zone scheme I thought this is tailor-made for a guy who can really explode off the edge. I love this guy's competitive spirit.'
|Footballguys view: We are super excited about Freeman's fit in this new scheme. Freeman has the ability to make quick cuts, and he can accelerate in the blink of an eye. He's a back you could likely get in the later rounds of your draft, and Freeman could pay off like a good flex play or low-end RB2 if the role is large enough.|

Bengals | May not have spot for Terence Newman Fri Feb 20, 07:37 AM
Free-agent DB Terence Newman (Bengals) may not have a spot with the Cincinnati Bengals next season, meaning the club may let him test free agency. Newman wants to continue his playing career, according to head coach Marvin Lewis.
|Footballguys view: Newman's not the same player he used to be. The Bengals could be ready to move on, and there's likely a CB-needy team who could show interest.|

Texans | Case Keenum gets vote of confidence Fri Feb 20, 07:23 AM
Houston Texans QB Case Keenum picked up a vote of confidence from head coach Bill O'Brien, who called Keenum a 'very viable' option at quarterback for 2015.
|Footballguys view: Is this a 'dreaded' vote of confidence? Or is this just a regular vote of confidence? Meh, either way it's Case Keenum people. Not much to see here even if he's actually playing.|

Falcons | Byron Maxwell has team's interest Fri Feb 20, 07:18 AM
Free-agent CB Byron Maxwell (Seahawks) may have interest from the Atlanta Falcons, according to team sources. Maxwell played under Falcons coach Dan Quinn when Quinn was defensive coordinator in Seattle.
|Footballguys view: The Falcons need as much help on defense as humanly possible. Maxwell is looking for a pay day after getting plenty of playing time with the Seahawks.|
Falcons | ATL has interest in Julius Thomas Fri Feb 20, 07:12 AM
Free-agent TE Julius Thomas (Broncos) has some likely interest from the Atlanta Falcons, who are looking for an upgrade at the spot this offseason.
|Footballguys view: The move would make a ton of sense for the Falcons. Since Tony Gonzalez retired, they have had zero help at the tight end position. Julius Thomas would provide them with an upgrade and fit in nicely with Roddy White and Julio Jones.|

Falcons | ATL has not started Julio Jones talks Fri Feb 20, 07:00 AM
Atlanta Falcons WR Julio Jones has not had contract talks start yet despite hearing how much the team likes him from owner Arthur Blank and head coach Dan Quinn.
|Footballguys view: Jones is entering the final year of his contract in 2015. He has a cap number of $10.1 million this season, and there's no way the team is going to let him go. We could see the two sides begin to talk about extending his deal in the near future.|

San Diego Chargers QB Philip Rivers and the team will have discussions on a contract extension at an appropriate time, but no discussions are scheduled for this week according to general manager Tom Telesco.
|Footballguys view: Rivers is entering the final year of his contract in 2015. He has a $17.4 million cap hit this year, so the team could extend the contract and drop that number to clear up more salary cap space.|

Dolphins | Still comfortable with Ryan Tannehill Fri Feb 20, 02:11 AM
Miami Dolphins QB Ryan Tannehill still has a backer in general manager Dennis Hickey, who admitted average salaries for starting quarterbacks are going up but the team is still high on Tannehill as a starter.
|Footballguys view: Tannehill has flashed during his time in the pros, the Dolphins just need to do a better job of protecting him and put better weapons around him. The Mike Wallace experience has not gone as planned, but we do like the potential of Jarvis Landry. The Dolphins will likely keep Charles Clay around in free agency, and that is a rock-solid move. Tannehill's numbers under duress are some of the best in the NFL--a good sign for the young quarterback.|
Jaguars | Jaguars keeping Toby Gerhart? Fri Feb 20, 12:22 AM
Jacksonville Jaguars RB Toby Gerhart will likely be back with the team in 2015, according to head coach Gus Bradley. 'Toby's done a nice job for us,' Bradley said Thursday, Feb. 19. 'I know people may consider him a third down-type back or a short-yardage, situational back but we saw him do enough good things on first and second downs that he'll have a place with us. He is a different style of back and we're putting tougher an offense that best utilizes his strength.'
|Footballguys view: Gerhart can stay with the Jaguars and play a part-time role. They have Denard Robinson at running back, but he's not a player who can handle a huge load. They'll need to spread things out, and that's where Gerhart comes in.|

Houston Texans RB Arian Foster will have his carries managed in game more often in 2015, according to head coach Bill O'Brien. O'Brien also said that running back is a position the team will look at in the 2015 NFL Draft.
|Footballguys view: We wouldn't be surprised to the Texans select Todd Gurley (Georgia) in the first round of the 2015 NFL draft. Gurley has superstar potential, but is coming off a knee injury suffered last year.|
