Broncos | Paxton Lynch could start    Sun Aug 21, 02:53 PM

Denver Broncos QB Paxton Lynch has not been ruled out for the starting job, according to head coach Gary Kubiak. 'He's always been in the mix,' Kubiak said. 'Everybody is in competition to play.'

Footballguys view: This is more a sign of how Mark Sanchez and Trevor Siemian have not seized the job than a sign that Lynch has made leaps and bounds of improvement this summer. Sanchez is still probably the best bet to start, but only a slight favorite with the third preseason game likely deciding the starter unless Sanchez craters. Either way, whoever starts will be on a short leash.

Patriots | Dion Lewis expected to miss two months    Sun Aug 21, 01:52 PM

Updating previous reports, New England Patriots RB Dion Lewis (knee) is expected to miss two months because of his second knee surgery and likely will start the 2016 season on the Physically Unable to Perform list.

Footballguys view: Lewis could play a role down the stretch and we know that on a per touch basis, he is highly productive and efficient. He's worth a later pick in deep leagues where you can stash him, but in short bench leagues, it is difficult to justify carrying Lewis for two months and forgoing multiple waiver wire opportunities.

Patriots | Sebastian Vollmer may go on IR    Sun Aug 21, 12:51 PM

New England Patriots OT Sebastian Vollmer (undisclosed) likely will be placed on the Reserve/Injured list, according to a source. Vollmer started training camp on the Physically Unable to Perform list because of an undisclosed injury.

Footballguys view: The Patriots offense struggled down the stretch when they lost key offensive linemen and skill players, including Vollmer. Marcus Cannon is likely the next man up at right tackle, with Ladarius Waddle as the swing tackle, although Waddle could push Cannon to start.

Patriots | Dion Lewis needs another surgery    Sun Aug 21, 12:42 PM

Browns | Josh Gordon may practice    Sun Aug 21, 12:37 PM

Cleveland Browns WR Josh Gordon (quadriceps) hopefully will be able to participate in practice this week, according to head coach Hue Jackson.

Footballguys view: Hopefully we can see Terrelle Pryor, Corey Coleman, and Gordon on the field next week. The Browns could have a very dynamic pass offense if Robert Griffin III keeps his poise and distributes the ball well. Adding in Gary Barnidge at tight end and Duke Johnson as a receiver out of the backfield will only help.

Browns | Coach wants Corey Coleman to play    Sun Aug 21, 12:26 PM

Cleveland Browns head coach Hue Jackson said he hopes WR Corey Coleman (hamstring) will be able to practice this week and said it is important for Coleman to play in the preseason game against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers Friday, Aug. 26.

Footballguys view: Coleman is still worth a pick as one of your first bench wide receivers, but if he can't play next week, it could be a slow start for the rookie. He could get a lot of targets in an offense that will have Terrelle Pryor and eventually Josh Gordon stretching out defenses. Coleman's absence has been long enough now that we have to worry about re-injury for his first few practices back.

Ravens | Joe Flacco expected to play vs. Detroit    Sun Aug 21, 12:08 PM

Baltimore Ravens QB Joe Flacco (knee) has missed the first two preseason games but is expected to play in the preseason game against the Detroit Lions Saturday, Aug. 27.

Footballguys view: All signs point to Flacco being ready to go for the season opener against the short-handed Bills defense. He should be a good streamer with the likely high volume of passes in Marc Trestman offense.

Dolphins | Xavien Howard to miss preseason game    Sun Aug 21, 12:03 PM

Dolphins | Kenyan Drake may go on short-term IR    Sun Aug 21, 11:40 AM

Miami Dolphins RB Kenyan Drake (hamstring) may be a candidate for the short-term Injured Reserve list if the team wants to keep RBs Isaiah Pead and Damien Williams on the 53-man roster. Drake has missed most of training camp because of a hamstring injury.

Footballguys view: Drake was injury-prone at Alabama, and it has carried over in the NFL before he has even had a chance to show his stuff. He might play a role by the end of the season, but it's beginning to look like Drake will be a minimal part of the rotation this year.

NFL | Karlos Williams expects to join new team    Sun Aug 21, 11:25 AM

Free-agent RB Karlos Williams (Bills) fully expects to find a new team after he was released by the Buffalo Bills Saturday, Aug. 20, according to sources.

Footballguys view: Williams showed too much last year to be on the waiver wire for long. He's got excellent speed and receiving ability for a big back. Even if he has to wait until his four game suspension is over, Williams will get signed somewhere - assuming that he has shown that he will keep himself in shape.

Patriots | Dion Lewis may start on PUP list    Sun Aug 21, 11:08 AM

New England Patriots RB Dion Lewis (knee) could start the regular season on the Physically Unable to Perform list if he is not able to participate in practice this week, in the opinion of ESPNBoston.com's Mike Reiss. Lewis is doing well in his recovery but has not practiced since the start of training camp.

Footballguys view: Reiss is the most plugged-in Patriots beat writer, so this is concerning to say the least. Where past reports felt like speculation, this is a sure sign that the PUP is play for Lewis. We still don't know if he had a setback, and the explanation of trying to preserve him for the stretch run is also valid. Lewis will drop at least a round or two on most boards in the wake of this news, and if he doesn't practice next week, it is time for a steeper drop.

Colts | T.Y. Hilton bothered by sore hamstring    Sun Aug 21, 10:39 AM

Indianapolis Colts WR T.Y. Hilton (hamstring) continues to be bothered by a sore hamstring, which he suffered in the preseason opener against the Buffalo Bills, according to head coach Chuck Pagano.

Footballguys view: We'll want to see this clear up by next week to dismiss it, but even if Hilton can't play next week, his third round ADP is a discount from the WR1 he has been with Andrew Luck over the last two years of his career.

Colts | Vontae Davis has injured ankle    Sun Aug 21, 10:28 AM

Indianapolis Colts CB Vontae Davis (ankle) rolled his ankle in practice Thursday, Aug. 18, according to head coach Chuck Pagano.

Footballguys view: Harris is the slot receiver and return man for the Giants. They would have two spots to fill if he is going to miss time.

Texans | Will Fuller everything as advertised    Sun Aug 21, 01:22 AM

Houston Texans WR Will Fuller snared four balls for 73 yards and a touchdown on eight targets in the preseason game Saturday, Aug. 20, against the New Orleans Saints.

Footballguys view: Fuller got enough separation for Brock Osweiler to float a ball towards the back corner of the end zone on his score. He is a starter and worth a late pick to see if he can keep this up into the regular season with defenses focused on the running game and DeAndre Hopkins.

Texans | Brock Osweiler decent in victory    Sun Aug 21, 01:22 AM

Houston Texans QB Brock Osweiler completed 12 of his 19 pass attempts for 124 yards, one touchdown and one interception in the preseason game Saturday, Aug. 20, against the New Orleans Saints.

Footballguys view: Osweiler has a revitalized offense with new weapons on the outside and in the slot, and a rejuvenated Jaelen Strong able to play at both spots. He's on the fringe of fantasy relevance, but if JJ Watt misses time early, the Texans could return to their high volume passing ways from the first half of 2015.

Texans | Three missing from Houston O-line    Sun Aug 21, 01:21 AM

Houston Texans OG Jeff Allen (personal), C Nick Martin (ankle) and OT Derek Newton (hamstring) each missed the preseason game Saturday, Aug. 20, against the New Orleans Saints.

Texans | Duane Brown still targeting opener    Sun Aug 21, 01:21 AM

Houston Texans OT Duane Brown (quadriceps) missed the preseason game Saturday, Aug. 20, against the New Orleans Saints, as expected. He remains hopeful to be ready for the regular season opener, as he progresses from a torn quadriceps muscle.

Footballguys view: The Texans offensive line is banged up right now. They'll face Chicago's solid front seven to open the season. It would be very beneficial for Brown to knock the rust off next week, but the Texans might not be able to risk that if they think it could heighten the chances of a setback that would endanger his early season status.

Saints | Brandon Coleman busy in loss    Sun Aug 21, 01:20 AM

New Orleans Saints WR Brandon Coleman posted six receptions for 47 yards on 10 targets in the preseason game Saturday, Aug. 20, against the Houston Texans. He saw increased work with WRs Brandin Cooks and Willie Snead resting.

Footballguys view: Coleman has actually had a solid summer despite second-round pick Michael Thomas stealing all of the headlines. If injuries strike the Saints receivers, we could be talking about him as a hot waiver wire pickup this season.

Ravens | Kamar Aiken gets into the end zone    Sun Aug 21, 01:19 AM

Baltimore Ravens WR Kamar Aiken cashed in his only reception in the preseason game Saturday, Aug. 20, against the Indianapolis Colts for a 14-yard touchdown.

Footballguys view: Aiken's role is shrinking with Mike Wallace coming on and Steve Smith returning to the lineup, but the high volume nature of this offense still makes him worth a later pick in PPR leagues.

Ravens | Ryan Mallett keeps foot on the gas    Sun Aug 21, 01:19 AM

Baltimore Ravens QB Ryan Mallett completed six of his eight pass attempts for 47 yards and a touchdown in the preseason game Saturday, Aug. 20, against the Indianapolis Colts. He did nothing to hurt his status as the primary backup to QB Joe Flacco.

Ravens | Lardarius Webb looks good    Sun Aug 21, 01:18 AM

Baltimore Ravens S Lardarius Webb is trying to win the starting safety job opposite S Eric Weddle, and he looked like a good fit in the preseason game Saturday, Aug. 20, against the Indianapolis Colts.

Footballguys view: Webb was once a shutdown corner, but injuries and age have taken that edge away. His ball skills and instincts could make him an excellent partner for Weddle in the back of the defense.
