Packers | Eddie Lacy says knee is fine    Fri Jan 16, 08:39 PM

Green Bay Packers RB Eddie Lacy (knee) said that his left knee was sore but fine Friday, Jan. 16. 'I'm not concerned,' Lacy said. 'I'm chillin'.'

Footballguys view: We feel Lacy is the key to victory for the Packers. If he can soften up the Seahawks defense, it will make things easier for Aaron Rodgers and the passing game. Teams who win in Seattle much get a good day from their rushing attack.

Cardinals | Larry Fitzgerald talks going well    Fri Jan 16, 08:30 PM

Arizona Cardinals WR Larry Fitzgerald's preliminary contract talks continue to go well, according to team president Michael Bidwell, and Bidwell said he believes Fitzgerald will be a member of the Cardinals next year.

Footballguys view: A positive sign for the Cardinals here. Fitzgerald has a cap hit of $23.6 million in 2015 with $14.4 million in dead money. The team needs to find a way to lower that price tag this year.

Colts | Dan Herron the key to victory?    Fri Jan 16, 08:14 PM

Indianapolis Colts RB Dan Herron has had at least eight carries in a game eight times this year, and the Colts are 8-0 in those games.

Footballguys view: This is a super simplified way of looking at the matchup against the Patriots. They could give Herron 20 carries, and it doesn't put an automatic "W" on the board. The Patriots are a tough matchup, and we think Herron is best suited getting a lot of receptions out of the backfield. We're not predicting a ton of success on the ground for the Colts. This game will come down to Andrew Luck and his ability to lift this team.

Jets | Chris Johnson expected to be released    Fri Jan 16, 07:11 PM

New York Jets RB Chris Johnson, who had just 663 rushing yards this year, is expected to be released this offseason. Johnson is due to make $4 million in 2015.

Footballguys view: Johnson has a base salary of $3.5 million, a bonus of $1.5 million and an option bonus of $250,000 due in 2015. At this point in his career, the Jets are unlikely to pay that kind of money for his services.

Jets | C.J. Spiller an option for Jets?    Fri Jan 16, 07:08 PM

Buffalo Bills RB C.J. Spiller, who will be a free agent this offseason, could be eyeing a move to the New York Jets, where he could be reunited with his former offensive coordinator in Chan Gailey. "There is that familiarity between me and him in that offense," Spiller said. "So that would be a perfect match. Who knows what can happen, but I'd be foolish not to have those guys on my list. I had my best years in the league with Chan. So it'd be dumb not to give it serious thought."

Footballguys view: Spiller had 1,703 total yards, eight touchdowns and 43 catches in 2012 with Gailey. The Jets have Bilal Powell as an undrafted free agent in 2015, but Chris Johnson is no lock to make it through cuts. His salary cap hit is $5.2 million this year with around $1.7 million in dead money. Spiller could be had for a decent price on the open market this offseason.

Seattle Seahawks RB Marshawn Lynch (non-injury) practiced in full for the second straight day Friday, Jan. 16, and is probable for the NFC Championship game against the Green Bay Packers Sunday, Jan. 18.

DE Michael Bennett (non-injury), DT Tony McDaniel (shoulder), TE Tony Moeaki (calf), CB Tharold Simon (illness) and C Max Unger (ankle) are probable. Simon didn't practice Friday, Jan. 16.   Dolphins | Owner unsure about Mike Wallace's status    Fri Jan 16, 04:54 PM

Miami Dolphins WR Mike Wallace's status for next season is not known at this point, according to owner Stephen Ross. Ross said he is not sure if anyone in the organization knows if Wallace will remain with the team.

Footballguys view: Wallace had a $17 million cap hit in 2014, but that number drops to $12.1 million in 2015. He scored 10 touchdowns in 2014, but Wallace still seems to lack chemistry with quarterback Ryan Tannehill. Wallace is known as a speedy deep target, but his 12.8 yards per catch ranked 44th in the league last year. He ran 452 routes (31st) and was targeted 111 times (30th) in 2014 as well.

Patriots | Brandon LaFell probable    Fri Jan 16, 04:33 PM

New England Patriots WR Brandon LaFell (shoulder, toe) was limited during practice Friday, Jan. 16, and is listed as probable for the AFC Championship game.

Footballguys view: The Patriots may not need to stretch the field against the Colts on Sunday. He will be asked to help block for the ground game, and Tom Brady may toss him a few passes to keep the defense honest on the outside.

Colts | Reggie Wayne resting Friday    Fri Jan 16, 04:11 PM

Indianapolis Colts WR Hakeem Nicks figures to play a key role in the AFC Championship game against the New England Patriots Sunday, Jan. 18, especially if the Patriots use CB Darrelle Revis to try to shut down WR T.Y. Hilton. Nicks has been showing more explosiveness in the offense in limited snaps of late. WR Reggie Wayne has just three of QB Andrew Luck's 77 postseason targets.

Broncos | DeMarcus Ware thinks Peyton will return    Fri Jan 16, 02:24 PM

Denver Broncos QB Peyton Manning is believed to be leaning toward returning for another season, according to DE DeMarcus Ware. Ware said he has spoken to Manning since the team's divisional round loss to the Indianapolis Colts, and he's confident that Manning will return for another season. 'Me and Peyton will always talk back and forth about things. Now he's just looking forward to the next season and how we can get better,' Ware said. 'I think he'll be back. I feel like he still has a couple years in him.'

Footballguys view: Manning is going to take some time before he makes a decision about his future. Most around the team feel that he's going to make another run at a Super Bowl in 2015.

Bears | Chicago hires John Fox as head coach    Fri Jan 16, 02:17 PM

The Chicago Bears have hired former Denver Broncos head coach John Fox as their new head coach, according to a source.

Footballguys view: Fox took the Broncos to the playoffs four years in a row as the AFC West division winner. He's a successful coach who is known as being player friendly. Fox can build a strong defense, but it will take a bit of time in Chicago. What we don't know is how he'll mesh with quarterback Jay Cutler.

Packers | Aaron Rodgers probable     Fri Jan 16, 01:57 PM

Green Bay Packers QB Aaron Rodgers (calf) is listed as probable for the team's NFC Championship game.

Footballguys view: He's not going to miss this game for any reason. However, he's not going to look like his normal self. This calf injury could limit how much (and how effectively) Rodgers scrambles to keep plays alive against the Seahawks.

Packers | Eddie Lacy probable    Fri Jan 16, 01:56 PM

Green Bay Packers RB Eddie Lacy (knee) is listed as probable for the NFC Championship game. Lacy looks good, according to head coach Mike McCarthy.

Footballguys view: Lacy is the key player for the Packers this Sunday. If the Packers can smash box against the Seahawks, it will protect Aaron Rodgers as he deals with a calf injury. Lacy can wear down an opponent as the game goes on, and Seattle's defense can be run on if a team is willing.

Jaguars | Greg Jones signed    Fri Jan 16, 02:40 AM

The Jacksonville Jaguars signed free-agent FB Greg Jones Thursday, Jan. 15. It was a one-day contract so Jones could officially retire as a Jaguar.

Footballguys view: Nice move here. Jones carved out a nice pro career after coming out of Florida State years ago. He won't show up much in the stat box, but Jones was a punishing fullback who could smash open holes for the back behind him.

Cowboys | DeMarco Murray could be cap casualty     Thu Jan 15, 10:15 PM

Dallas Cowboys RB DeMarco Murray will be tough sign to a long-term extension if WR Dez Bryant is also signed, team owner Jerry Jones said Thursday, Jan. 15. Jones called the prospect of signing both players 'possible' but not 'financially reasonable.'

Footballguys view: Murray could hit the open market, which could net him some serious coin. He's coming off the best year of his career after rushing for 1,845 yards (and 13 rushing touchdowns) in 2014. Running backs don't break the bank on the open market, but Murray could certainly sign the largest contract of any back available in free agency this year.

Cowboys | Tony Romo won't be asked to restructure    Thu Jan 15, 08:23 PM

Dallas Cowboys QB Tony Romo will not be asked to restructure his contract in the offseason unless it would allow the Cowboys to sign a player that could put the team in the Super Bowl, team owner Jerry Jones said Thursday, Jan. 15.

Footballguys view: What if that player is running back DeMarco Murray? The Cowboys may not be able to afford Murray as he's set to hit free agency at the start of the new league year. We have a feeling that Romo would move some money around to keep Murray around. Stay tuned.

Seattle Seahawks RB Marshawn Lynch (non-injury) returned to a full practice Thursday, Jan. 15, after sitting out Wednesday, Jan. 14.

New England Patriots WR Brandon LaFell (shoulder, toe) was limited in practice for the second straight day Thursday, Jan. 15.

Eddie Lacy limited Thursday    Thu Jan 15, 04:44 PM

Green Bay Packers RB Eddie Lacy (knee) was limited in practice Thursday, Jan. 15, with a sore knee, according to head coach Mike McCarthy. McCarthy said he thinks Lacy will be ready to play in the NFC Championship this weekend.

Footballguys view: Again, Lacy will play and will perform. McCarthy is being coy, and more than likely Lacy will get a full load of carries. While some would worry that the knee was the reason he sat out a lot of the last game, it was asthma and he feels he will be fine Sunday in Seattle.

  Broncos | Doug Marrone a head-coaching candidate?    Thu Jan 15, 04:40 PM

Former Buffalo Bills head coach Doug Marrone is expected to be a candidate for the Denver Broncos' head-coaching position.

Footballguys view: He was red hot after he left Buffalo but the bloom has left the rose by now and we wouldn't be shocked if he didn't have a head coaching job come next season. He'd be an interesting fit for the Broncos, and might be a good choice to transition from Peyton Manning (whether he stays or not) to whatever comes next.

  Broncos | Vic Fangio a head-coaching candidate?    Thu Jan 15, 04:39 PM

Former San Francisco 49ers defensive coordinator Vic Fangio is expected to be a candidate for the Denver Broncos' head-coaching position.

Packers | Eddie Lacy limited Thursday    Thu Jan 15, 04:31 PM

Green Bay Packers RB Eddie Lacy (knee) was limited in practice Thursday, Jan. 15, with a sore knee, according to head coach Mike McCarthy. McCarthy said he thinks Lacy will be ready to play in the NFC Championship this weekend.

Footballguys view: Lacy isn't missing this game, so expect him to play and get a heavy load to take the pressure off Aaron Rodgers by keeping the defense honest. The Packers have a huge task in front of them, and the key to winning is using Lacy early and often. They need to soften up the Seahawks defense by running the ball and keeping pressure off Aaron Rodgers.

Packers | Eddie Lacy will be ready to go    Thu Jan 15, 03:58 PM

Green Bay Packers RB Eddie Lacy (knee) will be ready to go for the NFC Championship game against the Seattle Seahawks this weekend after being limited in practice Thursday, Jan. 15, according to head coach Mike McCarthy. McCarthy said he was being conservative in limiting Lacy Thursday.

Footballguys view: The only was Lacy is missing this game is if he is kidnapped, but even then we'd expect him to show up dragging a chair he is handcuffed to, removing the blindfold as the game started. He should get leaned on quite a bit and while it won't be easy against the Seattle front seven, he should see success as long as Green Bay is committed to the run.

Broncos | Emmanuel Sanders to play in Pro Bowl    Thu Jan 15, 03:32 PM

Denver Broncos WR Emmanuel Sanders will play in the 2015 Pro Bowl is an injury replacement for Atlanta Falcons WR Julio Jones (undisclosed).

Footballguys view: Congratulations to a player who won a lot of fantasy championships out there. Sanders had a heckuva year, but how effective will he be next season if Peyton Manning doesn't come back? Or Adam Gase is gone? The future is up in the air for the Broncos since they've been bounced from the playoffs and John Fox was fired.
