Raiders | Tom Savage to visit    Thu Apr 10, 11:18 PM

The Oakland Raiders are scheduled to meet with Pittsburgh QB Tom Savage Friday, April 11.

Footballguys view: Savage is seeing the buzz increase around his draft stock since standing out at PITT's pro day. He's your classic pocket passer with a rocket arm. Savage originally started his college career at Rutgers, but he couldn't hang onto the starting job. He transferred to Arizone, but left the program after Rich Rodriguez (and his spread/option attack) was hired as head coach. He landed at PITT and started to play up to his potential. Some say Savage is going to be a second- or third-round pick. Never say never, but his production in college (and his limited skill set) is more like that of a priority free agent.

Texans | Arian Foster expects to be ready for workouts    Thu Apr 10, 10:06 PM

Houston Texans RB Arian Foster (back) said he will be able to participate once offseason workouts begin.

Footballguys view: Having Foster back to 100 percent will really help the Texans. They may have a rookie quarterback starting at the beginning of the season, so they could lean on the ground game even more in 2014.

Updating previous reports, Miami Police spokesperson Rene Pimental said there is no evidence of a crime or sexual assault involved in the incident involving San Francisco 49ers QB Colin Kaepernick and WR Quinton Patton and Seattle Seahawks WR Ricardo Lockette. Pimental said the woman involved asked for an incident report. None of the players have been questioned, arrested or charged with any crimes.

NFL | Kelvin Benjamin skips on workout    Thu Apr 10, 04:34 PM

Florida State WR Kelvin Benjamin recently blew off a workout with an NFL coach who was on a special trip to see the prospect. Benjamin's excuse was that he was too tired.

Footballguys view: Well, that's no excuse if true. We've seen prospects do things like this, but if he was "too tired" this particular move was extraordinarily dumb. Unless he was desperate to not be drafted by this team, though you would imagine that he wouldn't have set up the meeting to begin with. This is baffling and won't go over well if true.

Panthers | Ed Dickson financials    Thu Apr 10, 04:20 PM

Carolina Panthers TE Ed Dickson will make the veteran minimum of $730,000 as part of his one-year deal with the team. He'll receive a signing bonus of $65,000. Dickson will likely be the No. 2 tight end behind TE Greg Olsen this year. Dickson had only 25 catches for 273 yards last year with the Baltimore Ravens.

Footballguys view: Dickson has a year to prove his worth to the Panthers and the league at large. Dickson is athletic and can split the seams but his hands can be inconsistent. With very few weapons besides himself and Olsen, he should get his chance to prove he can be more consistent.

Eagles | Tried to land Dion Jordan    Thu Apr 10, 04:02 PM

The Philadelphia Eagles reportedly made a play to trade for Miami Dolphins DE Dion Jordan roughly two months ago, according to a respected league source. The Eagles are believed to have offered a second-round pick and LB Brandon Graham for Jordan. The Eagles would have picked up the remainder of Jordan's four-year, $20.572 million deal.

Footballguys view: We knew the Eagles weren't quite done with their moves (although they might be now) and we knew the Dolphins were rumored to be looking to dump Jordan. It's enormously premature for the Dolphins to do so, and even more insane given that they moved up for him but the Dolphins never seemed to know what to do with him. The Eagles' offer was generous so perhaps Miami was less eager than reported.

49ers | Details on Colin Kaepernick investigation    Thu Apr 10, 03:35 PM

Updating a previous report, an unnamed woman said she had an encounter with San Francisco 49ers QB Colin Kaepernick, WR Quinton Patton and Seattle Seahawks WR Ricardo Lockette April 1 at a Miami hotel. The woman told police she drank and smoked marijuana with the players and wound up in Kaepernick's room. She told police that she and Kaepernick both removed their closes but didn't have sex. Kaepernick later left the room and the woman said she couldn't remember anything after that. Kaepernick is being investigated for alleged sexual assault, but the investigation is in the 'beginning stages.'

Footballguys view: The marijuana part is something that shouldn't be overlooked as it can land any of the players in the NFL's drug program if they aren't in it already. There's nothing about this that is good. Even if there was no rape, even if there is a logical explanation, this was an enormously dumb position for all three - but especially Kaepernick - to put themselves in.

Giants | More on Eli Manning's surgery    Thu Apr 10, 03:33 PM

New York Giants QB Eli Manning (ankle) said he should be able to run again in six weeks after undergoing a 'debridement' of his left ankle Thursday, April 10. 'I went through the recovery and rehab after suffering the sprain,' Manning said. 'I was still experiencing some discomfort as I began my normal offseason preparation, and after consultation, we felt the right thing was to have Dr. Anderson clean out the ankle.' Manning's timetable should have him ready for the majority of the team's offseason workouts.

Footballguys view: As we said before, Manning will be good by preseason at the latest and it sounds like he will be around sooner as well. The Giants need their quarterback healthy and ready to go if they are to bounce back. Of course they also need to protect Manning so he doesn't need ankle surgery next offseason.

Bills | Odell Beckham visits    Thu Apr 10, 02:52 PM

The Buffalo Bills are visiting with Louisiana State WR Odell Beckham Thursday, April 10.

Footballguys view: It's unlikely that the Bills would take Beckham with a top ten pick, since they just acquired Mike Williams and already have Stevie Johnson, Robert Woods and Marquise Goodwin. It's pretty unlikely that Beckham will be around in the second round as well. Still the Bills may be looking beyond the end of Johnson's contract or not be sold that Mike Williams can regain his groove. Beckham would be a nice target for Manuel, though he can be a tad inconsistent at times.

Saints | Visit with Robert Herron    Thu Apr 10, 02:50 PM

The New Orleans Saints are visiting with Wyoming WR Robert Herron Thursday, April. 10.

Footballguys view: The Saints are always looking for bargains at the wide receiver position. Herron has great straight-line speed and but also has the tenacity to go across the middle. He could be a nice pick for the Saints and a good fit for Drew Brees' offense.

Panthers | Sign Ed Dickson    Thu Apr 10, 02:46 PM

The Carolina Panthers have signed TE Ed Dickson (Ravens) Thursday, April 10.

Footballguys view: Greg Olsen will still be "the man" there but with the dearth of offensive weapons for Cam Newton to throw to, there may be plenty of opportunity for Dickson to make some plays. He flashed a few times for Baltimore but never quite consistently enough. He may get the chance as even if the Panthers grab a receiver with every pick in the draft, they will still need veteran players to step up.

Giants | Eli Manning to have arthroscopic surgery    Thu Apr 10, 02:34 PM

New York Giants QB Eli Manning (ankle) will undergo arthroscopic surgery on his ankle Thursday, April 10.

Footballguys view: It's not surprising that Eli Manning came away from the beating he took in 2013 with an injury. He should be fine in time for preseason.

Lions | More on Ndamukong Suh    Thu Apr 10, 02:00 PM

Updating a previous report, Detroit Lions teammates and coaches were not surprised that DT Ndamukong Suh was not taking part in voluntary workouts. 'It certainly didn't blindside me,' head coach Jim Caldwell said. 'We certainly knew. He and I have probably had more discussions than any player that we've had on the team. He's been in-and-out. I think he was here on a couple days when I came on a visit, so we kind of knew exactly what was going on.

Footballguys view: This is the kind of non-story story that we see as the draft analysis is winding down and news is slow. We'd like to see Suh there, as it could be a sign that he is taking more of a leadership role on. But not being there isn't necessarily a sign of the apocalypse.

Seahawks | Ricardo Lockette being investigated    Thu Apr 10, 01:09 PM

Seattle Seahawks WR Ricardo Lockette is part of an investigation by the Miami police involving an alleged sexual assault.

Footballguys view: Along with Quinton Patton and Colin Kaepernick of the San Francisco 49ers, Lockette was at a gathering where the alleged incident occurred. Regardless of the outcome of the investigation, reports that marijuana was being used could get the league investigating on it's own.

49ers | Quinton Patton being investigated    Thu Apr 10, 01:09 PM

San Francisco 49ers WR Quinton Patton is part of an investigation by the Miami police involving an alleged sexual assault.

Footballguys view: Along with quarterback Colin Kaepernick, Patton was present at an apartment where the incident spurring this investigation took place. We have little real information, so nobody wants to jump to conclusions, but reports of marijuana use could get the league involved regardless of the outcome of the investigation.

49ers | Colin Kaepernick being investigated    Thu Apr 10, 12:42 PM

San Francisco 49ers QB Colin Kaepernick is being investigated for an alleged sexual assault. Police are investigating an alleged incident that took place in Florida. Kaepernick has not yet been charged.

Footballguys view: There is a lot to piece together here, so let's not go leaping to conclusions as to what happened. Aside from alcohol, marijuana was allegedly being consumed during this incident, which will raise the ears of the league. Again, there is a long way to go before we have the facts, but as SI.com's Doug Farrar tweeted out earlier, whatever the outcome, this can't be what Harbaugh wants his quarterback and a receiver involved in during the off-season.

Colts | Ra'Shede Hageman visits    Thu Apr 10, 12:40 PM

The Indianapolis Colts hosted Minnesota DT Ra'Shede Hageman for a visit.

Footballguys view: The Colts defense needs help and they need someone on the defensive interior next to Ricky Jean-Francois as Josh Chapman (currently penciled in as nose tackle) wasn't impressive against the pass.

Link to story

Cardinals | Ra'Shede Hageman visits    Thu Apr 10, 12:38 PM

The Arizona Cardinals hosted Minnesota DT Ra'Shede Hageman for a visit.

Footballguys view: The Cardinals have some holes on both sides of the ball and Dan Williams wasn't terribly impressive at the nose tackle spot last season. Hageman would help plug up the run and bring some more pass rush to the defense.

Link to story

Falcons | Ra'Shede Hageman visits    Thu Apr 10, 12:37 PM

The Atlanta Falcons hosted Minnesota DT Ra'Shede Hageman for a visit.

Footballguys view: While there are plenty of first round projections for Hageman, some still feel he might drop into the second, which means the Falcons could have a shot at him. They could use some more help stuffing the run and Hageman can also get into the backfield to disrupt passes.

49ers | Storm Johnson to visit    Thu Apr 10, 12:25 PM

The San Francisco 49ers will visit with Central Florida RB Storm Johnson Monday, April 14.

Footballguys view: The Niners have five backs on their roster, even after letting Anthony Dixon leave, but they're always on the lookout for talent. Johnson is an underrated back in this class, projected to go in the fifth round by many analysts. He isn't a full-load kind of back, but in today's NFL that's not a big deal. His acceleration and power make him a solid part of an RBBC.

Steelers | Ryan Shazier to visit    Thu Apr 10, 12:11 PM

The Pittsburgh Steelers are scheduled to visit with Ohio St. LB Ryan Shazier.

Footballguys view: Shazier is projected to go in the late first round by many analysts, so the Steelers know if they want him, they will probably have to take him with the No. 15 pick in the draft. Shazier is a versatile back who can rush the passer, drop into coverage and stop the run. He is a bit lean and needs to play a bit more disciplined, but could be a good fit for this defense.

49ers | Talking to Brandon Lloyd    Thu Apr 10, 10:46 AM

The San Francisco 49ers are talking to free-agent WR Brandon Lloyd (Patriots).

Footballguys view: More than likely the team is just looking at depth options, as Lloyd didn't play at all last year. Instead, Lloyd appeared in a zombie "movie" called After Effect. Which makes us wonder - do the Niners have a concern about a coming zombie apocalypse? Are they just having Lloyd in to pick his brain so they can prepare? It makes as much sense as actually expecting anything from him this year if they do sign him.

Lions | Reggie Bush to see smaller load    Thu Apr 10, 10:33 AM

Detroit Lions RB Reggie Bush said he is fine with a potentially smaller workload in 2014. RB Joique Bell is expected to cut into Bush's workload more this season.

Footballguys view: Bell has been very effective and keeping Bush's body intact will be a big help down the stretch. Bell is a solid runner with some pop to his carries and is a nice counter to Bush, but also able to stand on his own.

NFL | Chris Johnson not working out for teams    Wed Apr 9, 10:20 PM

Free-agent RB Chris Johnson (Titans) will not be engaging in private tryouts for anyone, according to a league source. The thinking is that he has generated six years of game film, and he's a proven commodity.

Footballguys view: Everyone knows what Johnson's game is all about. Speed, speed, and more speed. He's a speed back who is not ready to play a backup role in the NFL. Now that he's on the open market, we should see a few teams interested.

Steelers | Odell Beckham meets with team    Wed Apr 9, 09:14 PM

Louisiana State WR Odell Beckham Jr. had dinner with the Pittsburgh Steelers Tuesday, April 9.

Footballguys view: The Steelers have a need at the wide receiver position after losing Emmanuel Sanders in free agency to the Broncos. Beckham would make a fine first-round pick for any team because of his speed, hands and ability to dominate at the point of the catch.
