Bills | EJ Manuel expected to be backup    Tue Jul 19, 02:54 AM

Buffalo Bills QB EJ Manuel is expected to hang onto the primary backup job behind QB Tyrod Taylor, as rookie QB Cardale Jones hasn't made enough progress to pose an immediate threat.

Footballguys view: A first-round pick in the 2013 NFL draft...and the only QB taken in the top round that year...Manuel has struggled to impress as a pro. Not only does he get banged up too often, but Manuel also lacks the accuracy and touch of a consistent starter. We love that he's a football junkie, but it doesn't appear like he's a starting-caliber QB in the NFL. He may get another shot to be a starter somewhere else, but in Buffalo he's strictly the backup.

Bills | Cardale Jones likely to be No. 3    Tue Jul 19, 02:53 AM

Buffalo Bills QB Cardale Jones is no immediate threat to unseat QB EJ Manuel as the backup for the 2016 season, according to beat writer Joe Buscaglia. Jones showed some inaccuracy and looked uncomfortable during offseason practices.

Footballguys view: Jones has a rocket arm and the athleticism to keep plays alive with his feet while keeping his eyes downfield. However, he has problems with consistency and accuracy. That's why he's a developmental QB for the Bills. The raw tools are there for Jones if he can get up to speed in the NFL as a passer. Not only will he need improved accuracy, but he needs to show the ability to make quicker decisions when facing the hyper-disciplined defenses of the NFL.

Dolphins | Kenyan Drake likely to be No. 3    Mon Jul 18, 10:01 PM

Miami Dolphins RB Kenyan Drake is likely to be slotted No. 3 on the depth chart behind RBs Jay Ajayi and Arian Foster unless the team keeps four backs to include RB Damien Williams. He had some moments in the offseason program, but not enough to suggest he was ready to be a reliable No. 2 back, thus the signing of Foster. Head coach Adam Gase wants a back capable of playing all three downs, because he prefers to substitute backs for an entire series, instead of during a series.

Footballguys view: Drake is a speedy rookie, and a player we are quite interested in for all of our dynasty teams. He has good foot frequency, and Drake has the ability to create his own space with deceptive speed and quickness. He's not the biggest back, but he's a willing inside runner. Even though he won't push the pile, we like Drake's ability to turn small holes into large gains. We'll see if he can translate his game to the pros. Think of him like a Ronnie-Hillman-plus player in the Gase system.

Dolphins | Damien Williams is hardest hit    Mon Jul 18, 10:00 PM

Miami Dolphins RB Damien Williams was the hardest hit by the addition of RB Arian Foster, as Williams slips from No. 2 to likely No. 3 on the depth chart with the potential to not even make the team unless they keep four backs. That's because RB Kenyan Drake figures to be No. 3 on the depth chart even if Williams is kept.

Footballguys view: There's just not going to be much there for Williams if he makes the 53-man roster. We see a RBBC with Foster and Ajayi as the top two backs. Drake is a speedy player who could be used in a change-of-pace role.

Dolphins | Arian Foster declares his health    Mon Jul 18, 10:00 PM

Miami Dolphins RB Arian Foster (Achilles') said Monday, July 18, that he is fully healthy after suffering a ruptured Achilles' tendon last season. He said he still feels like a Pro Bowl-caliber player and intends to show that. 'I don't have any expectations. Just coming here to compete and help the squad out however I can,' Foster said.

Footballguys view: Foster may not be the player he used to be, but he could win the starting job for the Dolphins. Even if he's the starter, we feel the Dolphins should mix in Jay Ajayi to help keep Foster fresh. The Adam Gase offense utilizes spread formations, so Foster--or any RB--is going to have large rushing lanes to take advantage of.

Dolphins | Dion Jordan looks rejuvenated    Mon Jul 18, 09:59 PM

Miami Dolphins DE Dion Jordan has had an impressive offseason and looks like a 'brand new' player, according to a source. However, he is still yet to be reinstated. Training camp begins Monday, July 29.

Footballguys view: If Jordan can finally start playing up to his potential, it would be a great boost for the Dolphins defense. He's not yet been officially reinstated by the league, but Jordan's agent expects that to happen before the start of training camp. Jordan could give the Dolphins a much-needed jolt to their pass rush if he's truly a new man.

Jets | Ryan Fitzpatrick situation could linger    Mon Jul 18, 07:37 PM

It looks as though the New York Jets may wait to view the practice repetitions of QB Geno Smith in training camp before there is more movement in talks with free-agent QB Ryan Fitzpatrick (Jets), according to sources.

Footballguys view: COULD linger? So what has it been doing for months, sauntering slowly? We suppose it could linger longer, and practically everyone under the sun has gotten tired of the drama. With training camp approaching, it's time to you-know-what or get off the pot when it comes to the Fitzpatrick/Jets situation. We'll see if they can finally come to an agreement.

Packers | Eddie Lacy back working out    Mon Jul 18, 07:35 PM

Green Bay Packers RB Eddie Lacy has reunited with trainer Tony Horton, the P90X founder, this summer. Lacy spent two months with Horton earlier this year after Packers head coach Mike McCarthy said Lacy 'cannot play at the weight he was at (last) year.' Lacy was 15 to 18 pounds lighter in April. 'Eddie will be fine,' McCarthy said in May. 'I believe he'll hit the target that we're all looking for when the lights come on.'

Footballguys view: Lacy is going to be rocked up this year, and his 'fat Eddie Lacy' days may be behind him. We'll see if the p90X version of Lacy is lighter and quicker as a runner. We'll also see if he has better stamina because of the lost weight. Lacy is going to be the lead back for the Packers in an explosive offense. Fantasy owners should consider him a low-end RB1 in 2016.

NFL | Charles Tillman retiring after 13 years    Mon Jul 18, 06:40 PM

Free-agent CB Charles Tillman announced his retirement following a 13-year career with the Carolina Panthers and Chicago Bears Monday, July 18.

Footballguys view: It will be sad to see 'Peanut' Tillman off the field in 2016. He suffered a knee injury late last year in his lone season with the Panthers, and his status for the start of the regular season this year was in question.

Dolphins | Jay Ajayi still likely to start    Mon Jul 18, 06:26 PM

Miami Dolphins RB Jay Ajayi is expected to enter training camp as the starting running back, in the opinion of The Palm Beach Post's Andrew Abramson.

Footballguys view: We're not so sure that's going to be the case, but Ajayi should get the first shot at the top job. The Dolphins have done almost everything they possibly could to add more talent to the RB position, and Ajayi will now have to beat out veteran addition Arian Foster for the starting gig. If healthy, Foster's starting experience and natural skill set would be a perfect fit for the Adam Gase offense. Watch this battle in training camp.

Cowboys | Lance Dunbar close to being ready    Mon Jul 18, 06:17 PM

Dallas Cowboys RB Lance Dunbar (knee) could be ready to go 'sooner than later,' according to executive vice president Stephen Jones.

Footballguys view: Dunbar may begin the start of training camp on the PUP list, but he could be ready for the start of the regular season. A change-of-pace back only, Dunbar may get a bit of playing time when rookie bellcow Ezekiel Elliott needs a breather. Dunbar's improved status does little to dampen our excitement for Elliott in 2016.

Cardinals | Andre Ellington could play receiver    Mon Jul 18, 05:55 PM

The majority of Arizona Cardinals RB Andre Ellington's playing time may come at wide receiver, as long as RBs David Johnson and Chris Johnson are healthy, according to azcardinals.com's Darren Urban.

Footballguys view: Ellington could easily be a slot receiver for the Cardinals. He's quick enough to break ankles in the open field, and Ellington has the speed to gain separation on linebackers or safeties. He's missed 11 games in three years with the Cardinals, but Ellington has ran 571 routes during that time--a mark good for 23rd in the league at the RB position. If David Johnson and Chris Johnson are healthy, there may not be many touches for Ellington as a rusher.

Cardinals | David Johnson will be featured    Mon Jul 18, 05:45 PM

Arizona Cardinals RB David Johnson is the unquestioned bellcow running back for the Cardinals this year, according to Darren Urban of azcardinals.com. RBs Chris Johnson and Andre Ellington will back up like they did for most of 2015.

Footballguys view: David Johnson shined during his rookie season with the Cardinals. His blend of size/power/speed is one that gets any fantasy football player excited. He's a first-round pick this year and has the opportunity to finish as the best RB in fantasy football. Johnson's current ADP is RB3 (1.08) in 12-team PPR leagues.

Redskins | Dez Stewart signs with Washington    Mon Jul 18, 05:26 PM

Free-agent WR Dez Stewart (Buccaneers) signed an undisclosed deal with the Washington Redskins Monday, July 18.

Bills | Jonathan Williams not suspended for now     Mon Jul 18, 05:25 PM

Buffalo Bills RB Jonathan Williams is unlikely to be suspended before 2017, according to ESPN.com's Mike Rodak. Williams was arrested Thursday, July 14, and was charged with driving while intoxicated.

Footballguys view: The legal process will have to be exhausted before Williams faces any punishment. There's a chance he doesn't see any discipline from the NFL in 2016. The rookie is a naturally talented runner, but this run-in with the law does not help his chances of making a fully positive impression. With Karlos Williams suspended the first four games of the year, there's a chance for a guy like Jonathan Williams to earn the backup role in Buffalo behind LeSean McCoy.

Cowboys | Rolando McClain could stick around    Mon Jul 18, 05:16 PM

Dallas Cowboys LB Rolando McClain may not be done as a Cowboy, according to owner Jerry Jones.   Bills | Sammy Watkins probable for camp    Mon Jul 18, 04:54 PM

Buffalo Bills WR Sammy Watkins (foot) is probable to participate in training camp, according to ESPN.com's Mike Rodak.

Footballguys view: The Bills are going to run the ball as much as possible. However, when they do go through the air it will be Watkins as the primary target--and for good reason. He's a big-time playmaker who can be a valuable fantasy asset in 2016. Watkins has a current ADP of WR21 (3.11) in 12-team PPR leagues.

Dolphins | Arian Foster joins Miami    Mon Jul 18, 04:32 PM

Free-agent RB Arian Foster (Texans) signed a one-year deal with the Miami Dolphins Monday, July 18, according to a source. Financial terms were not disclosed.

Footballguys view: Clearly, we'll see soon enough how Foster is progressing. Jay Ajayi has been projected to be the RB1 here but the team has made it clear they'd like to have help. The Dolphins lost Lamar Miller this offseason and missed on C.J. Anderson who stayed with Denver. Chris Johnson was also a target of theirs before he decided to stay with the Cardinals. A healthy Foster clearly is trouble for Ajayi. Although "healthy" is an adjective we haven't used with Foster a lot in the last year. Stay tuned as we like this move for Foster and for the Dolphins.

Bills | LeSean McCoy will be rested    Mon Jul 18, 04:22 PM

Buffalo Bills RB LeSean McCoy will play very little in the preseason, if at all, according to ESPN.com's Mike Rodak.

Footballguys view: Good! The team knows they're going to run the ball early and often...with McCoy as the featured back. There's no need to risk injury or wear down the seasoned veteran by overworking him in camp.

Cowboys | Justin Durant re-signs with Dallas    Mon Jul 18, 03:29 PM

Dallas Cowboys LB Justin Durant re-signed to a one-year deal. Financial terms were not disclosed.

Footballguys view: Durant comes back to the Cowboys after one ho-hum year with the Falcons in 2015. He gives the team valuable veteran depth, and there's a chance he could start for them--especially with Rolando McClain suspended 10 games for violating the league's substance abuse policy.

Patriots | New England likes Jimmy Garoppolo    Mon Jul 18, 03:03 PM

New England Patriots QB Jimmy Garoppolo has earned the confidence of teammates and coaches, according to Phil Perry of CSNNE.com.

Footballguys view: That's all nice and well, but we need to see it on the field before we get too excited about Garoppolo's prospects. He's got a quick release, and Garoppolo is accurate on passes within 10 yards of the line of scrimmage. However, he's not good under pressure and seems to abandon plays/reads when under the slightest bit of duress.

Broncos | Aqib Talib should be ready for camp    Mon Jul 18, 02:16 PM

Updating a previous report, Denver Broncos CB Aqib Talib (leg) said he feels great and he should be ready for training camp. Talib did show a little limp, though, after shedding his crutches for the first time since his gunshot wound. The cornerback also said that he's 'running and everything.'

Footballguys view: The Broncos should ease Talib back into action when camp begins. The gunshot wound cost him portions of the mandatory work this offseason.

Broncos | Aqib Talib off crutches    Mon Jul 18, 01:41 PM

Denver Broncos CB Aqib Talib (leg) is off his crutches and has been seen walking normally.

Footballguys view: Talib missed portions of the offseason after he was shot earlier this year. The gunshot wound went down the back of his leg, and the team wanted to be cautious as he recovered from the injury. He should be good to go for training camp, although we feel he will be limited during the start of camp.

Jaguars | Blake Bortles liked to go deep    Mon Jul 18, 01:27 PM

Jacksonville Jaguars QB Blake Bortles was tied for first with Green Bay Packers QB Aaron Rodgers in completions of at least 25 yards (39), and he was ninth in completions (355), sixth in attempts (606) and seventh in yards (4,428). However, Bortles also had 23 total turnovers in 2015, only a 58.6 completion percentage and took 51 sacks.

Footballguys view: Bortles had an air-yards-per-attempt average of 9.24 yards, a mark good for 4th-best in the league for 16-game starters. Opposing defenses went after Bortles early and often, and he was blitzed on average 35.2 percent of his dropbacks in 2015 (8th-highest in the NFL). We'll see if Bortles sees a bit less pressure this year with what should be an improved rushing attack with T.J. Yeldon and Chris Ivory. He should still be in 'attack' mode when dropping back to pass, and with more experience he might be more careful with the rock.

Panthers | Kawann Short won't hold out    Mon Jul 18, 01:09 PM

Carolina Panthers DT Kawann Short will report to training camp later this month after skipping some of organized team activities in search of a new deal. Short is looking to match the six-year, $102.6 million deal the Philadelphia Eagles gave to DT Fletcher Cox.

Footballguys view: Short was at the facility for the mandatory portion of the offseason. A second-round pick in 2013, Short had a breakout season last year and was named second-team All-Pro. He's set to be a free agent in 2017, so it would benefit the Panthers to get something done before he hits the open market (or before they'd have to use the franchise tag on him).

Redskins | Marlon Brown of interest to Washington    Mon Jul 18, 01:07 PM

Free-agent WR Marlon Brown (Ravens) is working out for the Washington Redskins Monday, July 18.

Footballguys view: Brown made it through 10 games last year with the Ravens, but ended the year on I.R. due to a back injury. It seems like just yesterday when the UDFA out of Georgia was scoring seven TDs in 2013...but he hasn't scored since, got hurt and fell out of favor with the Ravens. Washington is fairly well stocked at the WR position, so we don't see a spot on the 53-man roster for Brown if he is even added.

Bills | Buffalo makes Reggie Bush an offer    Mon Jul 18, 01:05 PM

Updating previous reports, the Buffalo Bills have put out an offer to free-agent RB Reggie Bush (49ers), but Bush is weighing his options and is in no rush to make a decision, according to NFL Network's Ian Rapoport. Bush played in just five games last year before suffering a season-ending knee injury.

Footballguys view: We may see Bush find a new home before the start of training camp, and it may be with the Bills. The team has interest in adding a back due to Karlos Williams' four-game suspension and rookie Jonathan Williams arrest for DWI last week. If signed, Bush will compete with those two plus Mike Gillislee for the primary backup job behind LeSean McCoy.

Baltimore Ravens QB Joe Flacco (knee) said he plans to be practicing on the first day of training camp Thursday, July 28.

Footballguys view: That's great news for the Ravens, but expect the team to take it easy on him as we go through camp and the preseason. In fact, it would be a bit of a surprise if we see Flacco play in the preseason given the nature of his knee injury. All signs point to Flacco being ready to go by Week 1 of the regular season.

Eagles | Nelson Agholor won't be charged    Mon Jul 18, 12:34 PM

Philadelphia Eagles WR Nelson Agholor will not be charged after the Philadelphia District Attorney's office conducted an investigation into an alleged sexual assault case against the receiver. The office said in a statement that it 'lacked sufficient evidence' to charge Agholor.

Footballguys view: The league could still hand down some discipline just for making 'the shield' look bad, but we think it's unlikely. Agholor had a disappointing rookie season, and he's looking to win the No.2 job over veteran Rueben Randle this year. A high-ankle sprain and trouble grasping the playbook held Agholor back in 2015. We'll see if he can get on track, stay healthy and produce this year.

Bills | Reggie Bush interests Bills    Mon Jul 18, 11:34 AM

Updating a previous report, free-agent RB Reggie Bush (49ers) has drawn interest from the Buffalo Bills. Bush is still weighing his options.

Footballguys view: The Bills have a talented group of RBs, but there's some problems that could open the door for a veteran like Bush to be added. Karlos Williams has been suspended the first four games of the year and rookie Jonathan Williams was recently arrested for DWI which could lead to league discipline. If added, Bush would compete to be a reserve RB behind starter LeSean McCoy.

Vikings | Jerick McKinnon could see more snaps    Mon Jul 18, 11:01 AM

Minnesota Vikings RB Jerick McKinnon could see more playing time as the team looks to get more out of the passing game.

Footballguys view: We could see McKinnon playing a bit more this year, but it doesn't dampen our outlook on Adrian Peterson. McKinnon is a valuable handcuff for Peterson owners, and he can be had near the end of your draft. Peterson is a top-10 pick in most any format, and he's got the upside to finish as a top-5 fantasy RB once again in 2016.

Jets | Ryan Fitzpatrick, Jets not a given    Mon Jul 18, 11:00 AM

Free-agent QB Ryan Fitzpatrick (Jets) re-signing with the New York Jets by the start of training camp, or shortly after, isn't a sure thing. The Jets have been offering a three-year, $24 million deal with $12 million in the first year.

Footballguys view: It's never really been a sure thing...especially since the Jets haven't fallen all over themselves to get Fitzpatrick signed. We were a bit shocked they were able to come to a long-term agreement with franchise player Muhammad Wilkerson, but with that behind them all attention can be turned towards Fitzpatrick. We just don't see them moving much on their current offer.

Bears | Hot RB will be leaned on in Chicago    Mon Jul 18, 10:39 AM

Updating previous reports, Chicago Bears RB Jeremy Langford, RB Ka'Deem Carey, RB Jordan Howard and RB Jacquizz Rodgers will be part of a committee in the backfield, and head coach John Fox plans to limit their workloads and ride the hot hand. The team wants Langford to run with a wider base and gain more yards after contact. Carey needs to build on his toughness and become a more complete back. Both figure to be part of the committee approach. Howard adds a bruiser skill set in short-yardage and goal line situations.

Footballguys view: Ah, the dreaded 'hot hand' approach. Fantasy owners are used to dealing with RBBCs since they are rampantly used across the league. Dealing with the 'hot hand' is entirely more frustrating. Langford should be the lead back most weeks, but if Carey is used more near the goal line he could be the more valuable fantasy back in certain matchups. Howard may be the most naturally talented runner from this draft class (right up there with Ezekiel Elliott), but he has to stay healthy and get used to the speed/discipline of the NFL before we can count on him as a valuable fantasy asset. Proceed with caution when considering Chicago's backs.

Eagles | Durability concerns for Ryan Mathews    Sun Jul 17, 11:54 PM

Philadelphia Eagles RB Ryan Mathews has played in all 16 games in just one of his six NFL seasons, averaging 12 games per year overall.

Footballguys view: In other news, water is wet. Mathews is a talented player, but too often he's banged up and missing time during his pro career with the Chargers and the Eagles. With DeMarco Murray getting traded to the Titans, Mathews is the lead back in the new Doug Pederson offense. If healthy, the opportunity is there for Mathews to be a low-end RB2 with upside. His current ADP is RB24 (5.10) in 12-team PPR leagues.

Raiders | George Atkinson III could carve out role    Sun Jul 17, 11:41 PM

Oakland Raiders RB George Atkinson III impressed with his straight-line speed and explosiveness during offseason workouts, and he will have a chance to earn more reps in training camp.

Footballguys view: Undrafted out of Notre Dame in 2014, Atkinson has spent the last two years on the Raiders practice squad. He's certainly on the roster bubble this year as his eligibility for the practice squad is running out of time. Behind starter Latavius Murray, we really like rookie RB DeAndre Washington (Texas Tech). He's a smaller back, but he's a willing inside runner with the speed and agility to make defenders miss in the open field. Outside of those top two backs, we don't see a ton of talent in the Raiders' RB corps.

Dolphins | Miami interested in signing Arian Foster    Sun Jul 17, 11:12 PM

Updating a previous report, free-agent RB Arian Foster (Texans) is expected to work out for the Miami Dolphins Monday, July 18, and Miami will seriously consider signing Foster if his workout goes well.

Footballguys view: The Dolphins have been looking everywhere for RB help. They signed C.J. Anderson (Broncos) to an offer sheet earlier this year and they considered signing Chris Johnson (Cardinals) too, but neither back wound up in South Beach. Enter Foster, the seasoned veteran who could step in and start from day one. The addition of Foster would negatively impact the fantasy value of current starter Jay Ajayi.

Miami Dolphins TE MarQueis Gray said he is focusing on strengthening his upper body in order to enhance his ability as a blocker and compete for a spot on the 53-man roster.

Footballguys view: Gray is an athletic freak, but he's bounced around to five different teams since coming into the NFL as an undrafted free agent out of Minnesota in 2013. We like his natural skill set, but it just seems like he's never going to do enough to stick no matter where he lands.

Lions | Arian Foster to work out for Detroit    Sun Jul 17, 09:46 PM

Free-agent RB Arian Foster (Texans) is scheduled to work out for the Detroit Lions later this week, according to a source.

Footballguys view: The Lions have an interesting situation developing at RB, and adding Foster to the mix would only further complicate things. Ameer Abdullah is set to be the starter, but he has to prove that he can handle a large workload and that he's more than just a change-of-pace back. Theo Riddick is a great receiving back, and he's certainly going to have a sizable role in the offense. If added, Foster would compete with guys like Stevan Ridley and Zach Zenner to be the team's power back. We just don't see Detroit as a good fit for the veteran.

Dolphins | Arian Foster working out for Miami    Sun Jul 17, 09:19 PM

Free-agent RB Arian Foster (Texans) is scheduled to work out for the Miami Dolphins Monday, July 18, according to a source.

Footballguys view: The Dolphins interest in Foster puts a damper on the fantasy value of Jay Ajayi. They have looked everywhere for additional RB help, and it just doesn't show a lot of confidence in Ajayi at the moment. If healthy, Foster could start for the Dolphins and relegate Ajayi to his backup. Stay tuned.

Saints | Tim Hightower the backup?    Sun Jul 17, 08:13 PM

New Orleans Saints RB Tim Hightower is the best bet to serve as the primary backup for RB Mark Ingram, according to beat writer Nick Underhill.

Footballguys view: That makes sense as Hightower is a seasoned veteran who can play a similar role to Ingram in case of emergency. We feel C.J. Spiller will get more playing time as a change-of-pace back behind Ingram this year...provided he stays healthy. Both Hightower and Spiller are backs to target in the final few rounds of your draft.
