NFL | Four teams contacting DeForest Buckner     Thu Apr 21, 06:53 PM

Oregon DE DeForest Buckner said he's been contacted pretty regularly by the San Diego Chargers, Dallas Cowboys, Jacksonville Jaguars and Tennessee Titans.

Footballguys view: Widely regarded as the second best defensive end in the class (just behind Joey Bosa), Buckner is an impressive looking player who combines strength, quickness and athleticism to be both a good run defender and pass rusher. All four of those teams could use his talents, and we don't expect to see him slip much beyond Tennessee, if he even drops that far.

Browns | Joe Haden in walking boot    Thu Apr 21, 06:40 PM

Cleveland Browns CB Joe Haden (ankle) was wearing a walking boot while watching practice Tuesday, April 21. Haden underwent ankle surgery in March.

Footballguys view: He should be ready by the start of the season, but the Browns will be careful with him as they can ill-afford a setback.

Redskins | Josh Norman to visit 'Skins    Thu Apr 21, 06:39 PM

Free-agent CB Josh Norman (Panthers) will make his first visit to the Washington Redskins Friday, April 22, according to a source.

Footballguys view: Washington should sell him hard, as they need the help. If they can pay him, he'd be an immediate upgrade to the 20th ranked pass defense in the NFL per Football Outsiders.

Browns | Brian Hartline returns to practice    Thu Apr 21, 06:33 PM

Cleveland Browns WR Brian Hartline (undisclosed) returned to practice Thursday, April 21, after not practicing Tuesday, April 19.

Footballguys view: Hartline could be effective if he's healthy next year. He missed four games and totaled just over 500 yards and a pair of touchdowns. With better quarterback play, he should have a rise in his stats, but would still be no more than a WR4 or so in fantasy.

Rams | L.A. meets with top QBs again    Thu Apr 21, 06:30 PM

The Los Angeles Rams met with California QB Jared Goff and North Dakota State QB Carson Wentz this week, according to a source.

Footballguys view: This is one heck of a smokescreen, as we are sure the Eagles (and therefore the Rams) know who will be available after the first pick. Either that or the Eagles truly are happy no matter who drops to them. Or they are insane and will pick a kicker. One of those things is not as likely as the other. We think it's Goff at this point, and he should be a decent fit in the offense. We like Wentz in the Eagles offense as well.

Browns | Several players miss practice    Thu Apr 21, 06:24 PM

Cleveland Browns OT Joe Thomas (personal), WR Andrew Hawkins (undisclosed), FS Rahim Moore (undisclosed) and OL Darrian Miller (undisclosed) did not practice Thursday, April 21.

Footballguys view: If you're worried about guys miss inthe voluntary-not voluntary workouts in April, don't be. Leave the panicking to Mets and Royals fans.

Redskins | 'Skins have offer to Josh Norman    Thu Apr 21, 06:18 PM

Free-agent CB Josh Norman (Panthers) has a legitimate offer on the table from the Washington Redskins. The San Francisco 49ers also have strong interest in the cornerback.

Footballguys view: Rumor is the money is in the range of $14-15 million which is what he was asking for. He would be a huge help to a bad Washington secondary and a nice addition to the Niners as well.

Browns | Terrelle Pryor progressing    Thu Apr 21, 06:17 PM

Cleveland Browns WR Terrelle Pryor seems to be getting more and more comfortable with the transition from quarterback to wide receiver, according to QB Josh McCown. McCown said Pryor isn't thinking as much about what he's doing, which he believes was taking away from Pryor's skill set.

Footballguys view: It's going to take time, so the Browns have to be patient with Pryor. Luckily it seems as if they will be. We don't expect a ton from him this year, but should see some progress.

Lions | Detroit cautious with Robert Nkemdiche    Thu Apr 21, 06:02 PM

Mississippi DE Robert Nkemdiche is a red-flag player, according to Detroit Lions general manager Bob Quinn. Quinn said the Lions must consider his value compared to the risk involved in possibly drafting him. Nkemdiche's draft stock has taken a hit this offseason. He has admitted to being a lazy player and has also been arrested.

Footballguys view: He has on occasion impressed in interviews with teams though, so it could be that he is not taking the hit we think he is. He might be too rich for the Lions at 16, but he will be gone by the end of the round. His size, frame and overall talent make him too good to let slide out of the round.

Browns | Josh McCown staying with Browns?    Thu Apr 21, 05:54 PM

Cleveland Browns QB Josh McCown seems to have a better chance of staying in Cleveland after Cleveland traded down from their No. 2 overall pick. 'I don't know what's going to happen,' McCown said. 'I'm not going to worry about that. I'm just going to focus on what I've got to do today and go and work hard.'

Footballguys view: They'll want him to stick around in case Robert Griffin III reverts to Bob Griffin, the backup for Kirk Cousins. We don't know what Griffin is capable of so having a competent backup - which if nothing else, McCown proved to be last year - is a must. Will the Browns grab a quarterback in the draft? We don't expect a high pick, so that too shouldn't impact McCown much.

Saints | Tim Lelito back with Saints    Thu Apr 21, 05:24 PM

New Orleans Saints restricted free-agent OG Tim Lelito signed his tender offer and will return to the Saints Thursday, April 21. Financial terms were not disclosed.

Footballguys view: Currently just one of two guards on the roster, they needed him in place long-term, even if that just means a few years.

Cowboys | Ka'Lial Glaud waived    Thu Apr 21, 05:24 PM

Dallas Cowboys LB Ka'Lial Glaud (undisclosed) was placed on no-recall waivers with a failed-physical designation Thursday, April 21.

Lions | Matthew Stafford won't be traded    Thu Apr 21, 04:54 PM

Detroit Lions QB Matthew Stafford will not be traded, according to general manager Bob Quinn.

Footballguys view: We didn't expect him to be. While the Lions need to do a bit of a rebuild, it's not a complete reclamation job. Stafford may not be in the same class as Tom Brady or Aaron Rodgers, but he's better than solid and if they can replace Calvin Johnson with some good players, he should be fine. We could see him as a nice QB2 next season.

Eagles | Sam Bradford likely wants trade    Thu Apr 21, 04:16 PM

Philadelphia Eagles QB Sam Bradford is expected to ask to be traded, according to a source, despite executive vice president of football operations Howie Roseman stating that Bradford is still the starter. It was previously reported that Bradford is upset with the Eagles' trading up in the NFL Draft for what will likely be a quarterback.

Footballguys view: And I want a pony. We may both come away disappointed, as the Eagles may not want to move him, since they have no guarantee that the rookie they choose will be ready to go. Could he force one? Perhaps, because he wants to make sure he gets a chance to show teams he can still play. If they give the job at some point to the rookie, that won't happen. Keep an eye on this, because some teams (COUGH THE JETS COUGH) still have no quarterback and could make a trade on draft day.

Broncos | Von Miller, Broncos apart in talks    Thu Apr 21, 03:23 PM

Denver Broncos franchise free-agent LB Von Miller and the Broncos have exchanged an offer and counteroffer, but general manager John Elway said 'you'd like to be a little closer,' in terms of the two sides' wishes. However, the Broncos remain confident they'll get a long-term deal worked out with Miller.

Footballguys view: Miller will be playing this year, rest assured. The defense needs him and at worst, Miller will be playing for a new contract if he doesn't sign one soon.

Broncos | Denver content with QB options?    Thu Apr 21, 03:02 PM

The Denver Broncos seem fine with going to training camp with QB Mark Sanchez, QB Trevor Siemian and a rookie quarterback, in the opinion of The Denver Post's Cameron Wolfe.

Footballguys view: They might pick up another backup either in the draft or from the flotsam left in free agency. And while it's possible they grab a Paxton Lynch or Connor Cook but they seem to be content to not reach and instead, lean on their defense like they did before. They just won a championship with mediocre quarterback play, so why not?

NFL | Myles Jack would love to play for Dallas    Thu Apr 21, 02:38 PM

UCLA LB Myles Jack said he'd love to play for the Dallas Cowboys, who hold the No. 4 pick in the 2016 NFL Draft.

Footballguys view: Dallas would be lucky to have him and given their pass rush issues - and the departure of Greg Hardy and suspension of Randy Gregory - they need to help. We would not be surprised if he became a Cowboy in a week.

NFL | Myles Jack says knee concerns false    Thu Apr 21, 02:36 PM

UCLA LB Myles Jack (knee) said his knee is fine and thinks the concerns hovering over it is a smokescreen. 'As far as my knee goes, it's absolutely fine. I've been working out for teams,' Jack said. 'I think you guys have seen the videos and stuff, so on my end everything's fine. I don't know if this is a smokescreen or whatever it is, but at the end of the day, whoever wants to take me will take me. I'm not worried about it.'

Footballguys view: This comes down to one thing - if his knee is an issue (and teams will know), how many years do you get? Because if you have him for the initial 4-5 years of his career and he's productive, and then he breaks down, you got 4-5 years of great production. It wouldn't be surprising if this was a smokescreen to drop him to another team, and we'll take Jack at his word. Adding him to a defense would be a huge help to that squad and we don't think he leaves the top ten.

Broncos | DEN talks with Kaepernick at a standstill    Thu Apr 21, 02:24 PM

San Francisco 49ers QB Colin Kaepernick's trade discussions with the Denver Broncos are dormant, according to Broncos president John Elway.

Footballguys view: The Broncos have made an offer and San Francisco and Kaepernick just have to accept it. Whether the team wants to - or if they really are committed to riding it out with Kaepernick - is a whole other matter. It certainly seems like they are, though they may just be holding out hope that someone offers something better.

NFL | Brian Hoyer taking his time    Thu Apr 21, 02:07 PM

Free-agent QB Brian Hoyer (Texans) finished his meeting with the Denver Broncos and took a physical Thursday, April 21, but there is no rush for him to sign with a team.

Footballguys view: He's a back-up so there's no reason to rush at all, at least as far as the Broncos should be concerned. And for Hoyer, he has options, so why rush? Until OTAs really get under way, he has time.

Chargers | Melvin Gordon with chip on his shoulder    Thu Apr 21, 02:05 PM

San Diego Chargers RB Melvin Gordon said he was terrible in his rookie season, and he has something to prove in 2016. In addition to having a full season under his belt, Gordon says being able to train in the offseason is a major advantage. He knows the system. He knows his teammates. Perhaps most importantly, he's on hand for day one of the offseason program.

Footballguys view: It would help if Gordon had some blockers. We think he has the talent but he's not a talent like Adrian Peterson or Barry Sanders - he's not making lemonade out of bad blocking. If he can get help opening lanes, Gordon should be a solid RB2.

NFL | Four teams in on Josh Norman    Thu Apr 21, 01:30 PM

Free-agent CB Josh Norman (Panthers) is attracting interest from the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, New York Jets, Chicago Bears and Tennessee Titans.

Footballguys view: We're shocked the Jets are on this list, given their biggest issue is pass-rush, not corner. Tampa Bay isn't a team that seems to like paying out huge contracts to corners, but the Bears and Titans need the secondary help and have some space. Those could be good fits.

Panthers | Cam Newton expected to be at OTAs    Thu Apr 21, 01:23 PM

Carolina Panthers head coach Ron Rivera expects QB Cam Newton to be on the field for the start of organized team activities Monday, April 25.

Footballguys view: It's going to be a long season for Newton, who had an awful interview after his Super Bowl loss and has been dissected since. He's going to be under an intense spotlight and how he handles it will mean everything to the Panthers' chances to make a repeat appearance. We're hoping for the best, but concerned the pressure could get to him.

NFL | Six teams in on Brian Hoyer    Thu Apr 21, 12:07 PM

Free-agent QB Brian Hoyer (Texans) has interest from six teams, including the Denver Broncos, who he is still meeting with Thursday, April 21.

Footballguys view: He's going to be someone's backup, which is what he is and what he does best. The Broncos will need him to back up Mark Sanchez, the Jets would like him to back up Geno Smith (or leverage Ryan Fitzpatrick to lowering his asking price) and the Cowboys have to stabilize their backup situation.

Panthers | Kelvin Benjamin will be limited in OTAs    Thu Apr 21, 11:29 AM

Carolina Panthers WR Kelvin Benjamin (knee) will participate in organized team activities, but he'll be limited.

Footballguys view: This was a very effective offense without him, so imagine what it could look like when Benjamin is there. We think he's at least a solid WR2, but he has the upside to maybe creep into WR1 territory.

Panthers | CAR didn't want short Josh Norman deal    Thu Apr 21, 11:23 AM

Updating previous reports, free-agent CB Josh Norman (Panthers) had the franchise tag rescinded because the team became uncomfortable signing him to a one-year deal and didn't believe he'd sign a long-term pact, according to general manager Dave Gettleman. 'The more we thought about it, the more flexibility that $14 million would give us,' Gettleman said.

Footballguys view: There has to be more to this, otherwise the move would have been made long before now. That $14 million isn't as valuable when there isn't much to spend it on.

Panthers | CAR door not closed on Josh Norman    Thu Apr 21, 11:15 AM

Free-agent CB Josh Norman (Panthers) doesn't have the door closed to him if he wants to re-sign, according to Carolina Panthers general manager Dave Gettleman.

Footballguys view: It would have to be at the right price, and given what his camp is talking about, we wonder what that would look like. It wouldn't be bad to bring back a guy who helped you get to the Super Bowl, though.

NFL | Josh Norman wants $15 million annually    Thu Apr 21, 10:00 AM

Free-agent CB Josh Norman's (Panthers) camp is focused on exceeding $14 million per year, and are pushing for $15 million, but they're not as concerned with total guaranteed money.

Footballguys view: Which makes the release from Carolina both more and less baffling. Less because it's a lot of cash but more because the guaranteed money wasn't (allegedly) an issue.

Jaguars | Jacksonville interested in Josh Norman    Thu Apr 21, 02:56 AM

The Jacksonville Jaguars have interested in free-agent CB Josh Norman (Panthers), a source said Wednesday, April 20. The team has more than $50 million in salary cap space, and they were interested in Norman prior to his franchise tagging by the Carolina Panthers.

Footballguys view: They have the money and they have the need, but is it a critical one? We think Jacksonville could compete in a relatively weak AFC South, so adding a playmaker at corner would help, but do they have too many holes to justify it?

49ers | San Francisco frontrunner for Josh Norman?    Thu Apr 21, 02:55 AM

Free-agent CB Josh Norman (Panthers) is drawing plenty of interest, and according to sources the San Francisco 49ers are expected to be the early frontrunner for his services.

Footballguys view: Norman played very well last year and has always been good, so it's just a matter of figuring out how much money it will cost to get him.

Vikings | Two Vikings options likely picked up    Thu Apr 21, 02:44 AM

Minnesota Vikings DT Sharrif Floyd and CB Xavier Rhodes are likely to have their fifth-year player options picked up for 2017. Floyd's option is worth $6.757 million, and Rhodes' is worth $8.026 million.

Footballguys view: Both have been solid for the Vikings, so picking up their options is only good sense. They'll definitely command some good money when that's over, though.

Vikings | Cordarrelle Patterson likely in walk year    Thu Apr 21, 02:42 AM

Minnesota Vikings WR Cordarrelle Patterson is unlikely to have his fifth-year option picked up for 2017. He's set to make $1.389 million in 2016.

Footballguys view: He hasn't done anything to really improve in the time he's been in Minnesota and so we're not shocked at this. Disappointed, but not shocked. The rare first round miss for Rick Spielman.

Cowboys | Josh Norman might be option in Big D    Wed Apr 20, 11:45 PM

The Dallas Cowboys might be interested in free-agent CB Josh Norman (Panthers) after CBs Brandon Carr and Morris Claiborne posted zero interceptions in the calendar year.

Footballguys view: The Dallas secondary needs the help so, if they can find the cash, this is a good fit. Plus, arrogant players with chips on their shoulders are a thing for Dallas so, personality-wise, this is perfect.

San Francisco 49ers DT Ian Williams (ankle) had offseason ankle surgery, and general manager Trent Baalke said Wednesday, April 20, that he did not have a timeline on when Williams would be ready to play. 'Still underdetermined,' Baalke said. 'But he's making very good progress.'

Footballguys view: Another guy the Niners would love to have back, especially since he is outstanding against the run.

49ers | Glenn Dorsey making progress    Wed Apr 20, 11:09 PM

San Francisco 49ers DT Glenn Dorsey (knee) is making 'great progress,' according to general manager Trent Baalke, as the defensive tackle makes his way back from a torn anterior cruciate ligament. However, it is too soon to say if he'll be ready for the regular season opener. 'I'm never going to give a definitive because you don't know,' Baalke said. 'You could always have a setback, but right now he's made great progress. Looks good.'

Footballguys view: The Niners could use the help defensively, but they won't push him and risk setting him back. If he can do some work during camp, that will be a good sign, but we are guessing the Niners will plan not to have him for a chunk of the season, just in case.

49ers | GM texting with Anthony Davis    Wed Apr 20, 11:08 PM

Retired OT Anthony Davis and San Francisco 49ers general manager Trent Baalke have not had any in-person discussion, although the two have exchanged text messages. Davis has not yet applied for reinstatement after retiring from the league last year. 'I'm not going to get into our conversations within the media,' Baalke said. 'We've had several text messages back and forth and that's the extent of the conversations.'

Footballguys view: Maybe Baalke is just looking for dinner ideas around Santa Clara. Davis has been out for a year but planned to come back for 2016. We're still waiting for him to apply for reinstatement though so we're not sure what he intends right now.

49ers | Eric Reid will return in 2017    Wed Apr 20, 11:07 PM

San Francisco 49ers FS Eric Reid will either have his fifth-year option picked up, or he will be signed to an extension, general manager Trent Baalke said Wednesday, April 20. 'We're definitely looking at both options,' Baalke said. 'If we could get something done longer, we'll look at that.'

Footballguys view: It's a good move for a team which saw the departure of a lot of vets during 2015's off season. Reid will continue to bring consistency to the secondary for the Niners.

Free-agent WR Andre Johnson (Colts) said Wednesday, April 20, that he still intends to play football, saying 'that's the plan' after being cut by the Indianapolis Colts. He is a free agent and can sign with any team.

Footballguys view: Johnson may have a bit left in the tank but he's not worth a roster spot in fantasy and shouldn't be someone you hold on to in dynasty leagues.

Titans | Might not pick up option on Chance Warmack    Wed Apr 20, 10:18 PM

Tennessee Titans OG Chance Warmack has been one of the most durable linemen during his four-year stint with the team, but the team may be leaning against picking up the offensive lineman's $11.9 million salary that would become guaranteed for the 2017 season. If the team decline's Warmack's option, they still could negotiate with him regarding a contract extension all the way up until he hits the free agent market in March 2017.

Footballguys view: The Titans will try to keep him but don't want to tie up so much in a position like Guard. They'll probably get a deal done prior to the end of the contract, but they also have plenty of time to put another option together.

Eagles | Sam Bradford upset about trade    Wed Apr 20, 07:19 PM

Philadelphia Eagles QB Sam Bradford was not happy after the Eagles traded up for the No. 2 overall pick, with which they are expected to draft a quarterback. Bradford is mad and wants to show everyone who is best, according to ESPN's Adam Schefter. Although, executive vice president of football operations Howie Roseman said Bradford is still the starter.

Footballguys view: We'll see where this goes, but there's a part of us who cannot help but wonder why Bradford is shocked since his deal itself showed that the team wasn't sold. However, if it fires him up and he produces more consistently and stays healthy and plays better, then it's a positive. Footballguys view: It's a good deal for the Broncos and the best one for Hillman, though he did have his best season as a Bronco. He's a role player and likely just an RB3 unless CJ Anderson stumbles early in the season.

NFL | A few teams eyeing Brian Hoyer    Wed Apr 20, 06:19 PM

Free-agent QB Brian Hoyer (Texans) has drawn interest from five to six teams, according to a source. The Denver Broncos and New York Jets may have an advantage, though. They could give Hoyer the best chance to start, and Hoyer has already visited both teams. The Chicago Bears and Pittsburgh Steelers are two teams that could also be interested.

Footballguys view: Hoyer is a very good backup and a limited starter. More than likely all the listed teams are looking at him in that vein and no more. For the Jets, the interest is also likely an attempt by the team to get Ryan Fitzpatrick to pull his contract numbers down.
