Former San Francisco 49ers defensive coordinator Vic Fangio was not offered the DC job with the Washington Redskins following his interview on Sunday, Jan. 18.

Broncos | Gary Kubiak taking Denver job Sun Jan 18, 09:58 PM
Baltimore Ravens offensive coordinator Gary Kubiak will take the Denver Broncos head coaching position, as expected, multiple outlets are reporting Sunday, Jan. 18.
|Footballguys view: Kubiak was a backup quarterback behind John Elway years ago. Now, Elway is the General Manager of the Broncos and Kubiak is his choice to replace John Fox. Kubiak's West Coast system is an interesting fit for Peyton Manning. There are a lot of bootlegs and roll outs that may not be called with Manning under center. At this time, nobody knows if Manning is coming back for 2015. We think he comes back, and gets to play under Kubiak--remember, Manning was considering the Texans after he was released by the Colts in 2012.|

Indianapolis Colts LB Andy Studebaker (chest) was punished on a block while playing on special teams in the AFC Championship Game Sunday, Jan. 18, against the New England Patriots. Updating a previous report, New England Patriots OT Marcus Cannon replaced OG Josh Kline on the first quarter scoring drive in the AFC Championship Game Sunday, Jan. 18, against the Indianapolis Colts. It might have simply been a case of wanting to have more size at the goal line, as Cannon checks in at 335 pounds, and Kline is just 295.Link to story

Updating a previous report, New England Patriots CB Darrelle Revis (head) left briefly in the first quarter of the AFC Championship Game against the Indianapolis Colts Sunday, Jan. 18, due to a head injury.

|Footballguys view: Great news for the Cardinals here. Palmer is confident that he will be with the team next season, and with $10 million left in dead money on his contract--we're confident as well. The Cardinals were not the same without Palmer on the field.|

Broncos | Peyton Manning to skip Pro Bowl Sun Jan 18, 09:38 AM

Free-agent defensive coordinator Vic Fangio (49ers) will have a second meeting with the Washington Redskins about the team's vacant defensive coordinator position Sunday, Jan. 18. Fangio also met with Washington Saturday, Jan. 17.
|Footballguys view: Washington needs a serious overhaul on defense. Adding Fangio to run that side of the ball would be an upgrade.|
Browns | May look at Cecil Shorts Sun Jan 18, 08:11 AM
Should Jacksonville Jaguars WR Cecil Shorts hit free agency as an unsigned player, the Cleveland Browns may have interest. Browns played his college ball at Division III powerhouse Mount Union, and he is from the Cleveland area.
|Footballguys view: Shorts is a good receiver when healthy, but he's struggled with various injuries during his pro career. He's never played a full 16-game schedule in four years with the Jaguars. His 557 receiving yards this year is a low mark over the last three seasons.|

Ravens | Kyle Shanahan could be OC candidate Sun Jan 18, 07:52 AM
Should Baltimore Ravens offensive coordinator Gary Kubiak leave for a head coaching position, former Cleveland Browns OC Kyle Shanahan could be a possible replacement.
|Footballguys view: That would be a good move for the Ravens. Kubiak and Shanahan worked together with the Houston Texans, and Shanahan's system is similar to what Kubiak runs. Shanahan was a finalist last year before the job went to Kubiak.|
Eagles | Teammate endorses Nick Foles Sat Jan 17, 10:45 PM
Philadelphia Eagles QB Nick Foles is the leader of the team and is capable of leading the team to the playoffs, RB LeSean McCoy said Friday, Jan. 16.
|Footballguys view: That's great and all, but the team might feel differently about Foles. He's always been an odd fit for Chip Kelly's system. We would rather see the Eagles get a more athletic quarterback to properly run that offense. There is buzz in the draft community about the Eagles having interest in UCLA quarterback Brett Hundley.|

Patriots | Rob Gronkowski plays well against Colts Sat Jan 17, 06:38 PM
New England Patriots TE Rob Gronkowski has 17 catches for 297 yards and one touchdown in four career games against the Indianapolis Colts. He has gained 71 yards after contact as well.
|Footballguys view: Gronkowski plays well against everyone. He's nearly impossible to match up with in single coverage, so expect the Colts to put at least two defenders on the talented tight end. Even bracketing him with coverage may not be enough to slow him down...forget about shutting him down.|

|Footballguys view: The former UCLA/Washington WR has been in the league coaching on the offensive side of the ball since 2007. He'll now be in charge of budding star wideout Sammy Watkins.|
Colts | Trent Richardson doesn't travel with team Sat Jan 17, 03:05 PM
Indianapolis Colts RB Trent Richardson (personal) did not make the trip to New England for the AFC Championship game.
|Footballguys view: Richardson was a healthy scratch last week against the Broncos, and now he'll miss the AFC Championship. Behind Dan Herron and Zurlon Tipton on the depth chart, Richardson's game has fallen off more than ever this year. He's due to make $3.2 million (fully guaranteed), but we still think the Colts will consider releasing him.|

49ers | Mike Shanahan may be OC candidate Sat Jan 17, 02:41 AM
Former head coach Mike Shanahan (Redskins) may be a candidate for the San Francisco 49ers offensive coordinator job.
|Footballguys view: This is Mike and not Kyle Shanahan. It would be interesting if the senior Shanahan went back to being an offensive coordinator. He won two Super Bowls as the head coach of the Broncos, but his time as Washington's head coach did not turn out well. We thought Shanahan would take some time off then get a head coaching gig, but perhaps he will start back at the coordinator level with his old team. He was the 49ers OC from 1992-94.|
Packers | Eddie Lacy says knee is fine Fri Jan 16, 08:39 PM
Green Bay Packers RB Eddie Lacy (knee) said that his left knee was sore but fine Friday, Jan. 16. 'I'm not concerned,' Lacy said. 'I'm chillin'.'
|Footballguys view: We feel Lacy is the key to victory for the Packers. If he can soften up the Seahawks defense, it will make things easier for Aaron Rodgers and the passing game. Teams who win in Seattle much get a good day from their rushing attack.|

Cardinals | Larry Fitzgerald talks going well Fri Jan 16, 08:30 PM
Arizona Cardinals WR Larry Fitzgerald's preliminary contract talks continue to go well, according to team president Michael Bidwell, and Bidwell said he believes Fitzgerald will be a member of the Cardinals next year.
|Footballguys view: A positive sign for the Cardinals here. Fitzgerald has a cap hit of $23.6 million in 2015 with $14.4 million in dead money. The team needs to find a way to lower that price tag this year.|
Larry Fitzgerald player page
Colts | Dan Herron the key to victory? Fri Jan 16, 08:14 PM
Indianapolis Colts RB Dan Herron has had at least eight carries in a game eight times this year, and the Colts are 8-0 in those games.
|Footballguys view: This is a super simplified way of looking at the matchup against the Patriots. They could give Herron 20 carries, and it doesn't put an automatic "W" on the board. The Patriots are a tough matchup, and we think Herron is best suited getting a lot of receptions out of the backfield. We're not predicting a ton of success on the ground for the Colts. This game will come down to Andrew Luck and his ability to lift this team.|
Daniel Herron player page
Jets | Chris Johnson expected to be released Fri Jan 16, 07:11 PM
New York Jets RB Chris Johnson, who had just 663 rushing yards this year, is expected to be released this offseason. Johnson is due to make $4 million in 2015.
|Footballguys view: Johnson has a base salary of $3.5 million, a bonus of $1.5 million and an option bonus of $250,000 due in 2015. At this point in his career, the Jets are unlikely to pay that kind of money for his services.|
Chris Johnson player page
Jets | C.J. Spiller an option for Jets? Fri Jan 16, 07:08 PM
Buffalo Bills RB C.J. Spiller, who will be a free agent this offseason, could be eyeing a move to the New York Jets, where he could be reunited with his former offensive coordinator in Chan Gailey. "There is that familiarity between me and him in that offense," Spiller said. "So that would be a perfect match. Who knows what can happen, but I'd be foolish not to have those guys on my list. I had my best years in the league with Chan. So it'd be dumb not to give it serious thought."
|Footballguys view: Spiller had 1,703 total yards, eight touchdowns and 43 catches in 2012 with Gailey. The Jets have Bilal Powell as an undrafted free agent in 2015, but Chris Johnson is no lock to make it through cuts. His salary cap hit is $5.2 million this year with around $1.7 million in dead money. Spiller could be had for a decent price on the open market this offseason.|

Seahawks | Marshawn Lynch probable against Packers Fri Jan 16, 05:12 PM
Seattle Seahawks RB Marshawn Lynch (non-injury) practiced in full for the second straight day Friday, Jan. 16, and is probable for the NFC Championship game against the Green Bay Packers Sunday, Jan. 18.
|Footballguys view: Lynch is going to be ready to rock against the Packers on Sunday. They'll use him to soften up the Packers defense early and often.|

Dolphins | Owner unsure about Mike Wallace's status Fri Jan 16, 04:54 PM
Miami Dolphins WR Mike Wallace's status for next season is not known at this point, according to owner Stephen Ross. Ross said he is not sure if anyone in the organization knows if Wallace will remain with the team.
|Footballguys view: Wallace had a $17 million cap hit in 2014, but that number drops to $12.1 million in 2015. He scored 10 touchdowns in 2014, but Wallace still seems to lack chemistry with quarterback Ryan Tannehill. Wallace is known as a speedy deep target, but his 12.8 yards per catch ranked 44th in the league last year. He ran 452 routes (31st) and was targeted 111 times (30th) in 2014 as well.|
