  49ers | Michael Crabtree didn't feel 100 percent in 2013    Wed Aug 20, 02:17 PM

San Francisco 49ers WR Michael Crabtree said he did not feel like himself when he returned from offseason Achilles' tendon surgery last season. 'I was fast enough to be on the field,' Crabtree said. 'But I wasn't me.' Crabtree looked like a No. 1 receiver this offseason before he suffered a hamstring injury.

Footballguys view: That was to be expected, as Crabtree's injury happened late enough in the year that it wasn't even a sure thing that he'd play last year. The hardest part of Crabtree's valuation this year is weighing him being back in top form vs being in a run-first offense with three other viable targets.

Broncos | Jordan Norwood leaves practice    Wed Aug 20, 01:46 PM

Denver Broncos WR Jordan Norwood (undisclosed) left practice early Wednesday, Aug. 20, after suffering an undisclosed injury.

Footballguys view: Norwood had been getting some play with the starters with Emmanuel Sanders banged up, so this is something to watch, if only because any competent receiver can produce with Peyton Manning. We need to monitor the names of all of the WRs on the roster.

Jaguars | Cecil Shorts will be limited during preseason game    Wed Aug 20, 01:00 PM

Jacksonville Jaguars WR Cecil Shorts (hamstring) will be on the field for around 15 offense snaps during the third preseason game, according to head coach Gus Bradley.

Footballguys view: This is a lot better than we could have expected when it was reported that Shorts would miss "several" weeks with a hamstring strain early in training camp. He's a solid bench WR who can be very good for bye/injury fill-in duty as an accomplished WR1. He just needs to stay healthy to deliver value on his deflated ADP.

Giants | Odell Beckham Jr. still out    Wed Aug 20, 11:52 AM

New York Giants WR Odell Beckham Jr. (hamstring) is not practicing again Wednesday, Aug. 20. He's stretching on the side.

Footballguys view: The Giants can insist he didn't have a setback, but the reality is that he has barely been on the first during his first training camp and preseason with a new offense install going on. That is a terrible sign for his ability to contribute early in the season, and it probably makes Beckham not worth a draft pick.

Jets | Stephen Hill still behind    Wed Aug 20, 11:08 AM

New York Jets WR Stephen Hill has only one reception and 17 yards this preseason and has been targeted only twice. Offensive coordinator Marty Mornhinweg and wide receivers coach Sanjay Lal have worked with Hill on his route running, including shortening his stride lengths to add fluidity and efficiency, but Hill hasn't shown much progress.

Footballguys view: Hill is a bona fide bust despite having measureables that are on a par with Calvin Johnson. It's time to let him go in dynasty leagues.

Bills | Leodis McKelvin taking some first-team reps    Wed Aug 20, 10:11 AM

Eagles | More on LeSean McCoy    Wed Aug 20, 10:02 AM

Updating previous reports, Philadelphia Eagles RB LeSean McCoy (toe) has a painful condition similar to turf toe that flared up last week. He had an MRI and an X-ray on the toe, and he even had conversations about shutting it down if the pain became unbearable.

Footballguys view: This is definitely something to consider when breaking ties in the tightly packed top four running back tier, but until we see more clear outward indications that this will affect McCoy's production and effectiveness all season, it's really hard to move down one of the best backs in the game in his prime in a system that is almost designed exactly to take advantage of his elite abilities.

Browns | Josh Gordon appeal case had no settlement talks    Wed Aug 20, 09:57 AM

Cleveland Browns WR Josh Gordon's appeal hearing for his one-year suspension had no settlement talks. There has yet to be a ruling on the matter, but it appears to be an all-or-nothing case.

Footballguys view: Florio leaves open the possibility of the arbitrator trying to negotiate a settlement on his own between the two parties, but if this really remains an all or nothing proposition, you should assume nothing will be what the Gordon owners get from him this year.

Cowboys | Rolando McClain not practicing    Wed Aug 20, 09:49 AM

Dallas Cowboys LB Rolando McClain (cramps) is out of practice and in the weight room Wednesday, Aug. 20. He left practice the previous day due to cramping.

Footballguys view: This is the player who might start in the middle linebacker position for the Cowboys this year. In case you're wondering, the 49ers get the Cowboys to open the season.

49ers | Glenn Dorsey terms    Wed Aug 20, 09:21 AM

Updating previous reports, San Francisco 49ers DT Glenn Dorsey's two-year extension has $6.075 million in new money, $1.75 million in new incentives and $2.575 million in guarantees. The maximum value of the deal is $10.957 million through 2016.

Bills | Sammy Watkins sits    Wed Aug 20, 08:58 AM

Buffalo Bills WR Sammy Watkins (ribs) did not take part in practice in routes against defenders Wednesday, Aug. 20.

Footballguys view: Watkins injury is not serious, but it might not be a minor nick either. If he doesn't play in the "dress rehearsal" third preseason game, it will be an indicator that there is more than a mere bruise. Watkins stock has fallen after a blistering first week of camp.

Browns | Brian Hoyer named starter    Wed Aug 20, 08:42 AM

Cleveland Browns QB Brian Hoyer has been named the starting quarterback over QB Johnny Manziel. Head coach Mike Pettine wrote the announcement in an e-mail and said Manziel made great strides, but Hoyer had a decided edge.

Footballguys view: This is not so much because Hoyer was good as it was Manziel not doing the things on and off of the field that would make the Browns feel comfortable starting him week 1. Manziel still has a QB1 ceiling for fantasy when he does take the field, but that might not be until at least October if Hoyer stays healthy.

Bears | Four sit, two return    Wed Aug 20, 08:35 AM

Bears | Jordan Mills in danger for Week 1    Wed Aug 20, 08:16 AM

Chicago Bears OT Jordan Mills (foot) is in danger of missing Week 1. He has worn a walking boot sporadically throughout camp after January surgery to repair a broken metatarsal in his left foot.

Footballguys view: The Bears offensive line is in much better shape than it was two years ago. You want full health, but this shouldn't be too big of a blow to the line as long as the other four starters can stay on the field.

Saints | Jairus Byrd a full go    Wed Aug 20, 08:11 AM

Updating a previous report, New Orleans Saints FS Jairus Byrd (back) participated in full-contact practice drills for the first time this season Tuesday, Aug. 19. He's expected to play in the third preseason game this weekend.

Footballguys view: The Saints defense was already on the rise with great young defensive ends and Kenny Vaccaro wreaking havoc everywhere. With Byrd covering the deep part of the field, Rob Ryan can take even more chances. New Orleans is a terrific team D/ST to target if you don't want to stream all season.

Vikings | Captain Munnerlyn takes left corner job    Wed Aug 20, 05:32 AM

After starting the season sharing No. 1 duties with Josh Robinson, Minnesota Vikings CB Captain Munnerlyn appears to have won the starting left corner job outright. Robinson has missed the past two weeks with hamstring issues and coach Mike Zimmer is losing patience with him.

Footballguys view: Munnerlyn was an opportunistic corner with good blitzing ability behind the elite front seven of the Panthers. He could be an IDP factor in leagues that require starting corners because of the similar aggressive nature of the Mike Zimmer defense in Minnesota.

Bears | Santonio Holmes contract details    Wed Aug 20, 05:25 AM

Packers | Colt Lyerla might move to FB    Wed Aug 20, 01:31 AM

Updating a previous report, Green Bay Packers TE Colt Lyerla (knee), who was waived/injured Tuesday, Aug. 19, could move to fullback in the future, according to tight ends coach Jerry Fontenot. He said fullback 'certainly seems to fit (Lyerla's) wheelhouse.'

Packers | Colt Lyerla still in team's plans    Tue Aug 19, 11:41 PM

Green Bay Packers TE Colt Lyerla (knee) will likely be placed on Injured Reserve after he clears waivers, according to Lyerla's agent, Vinnie Porter. 'So to put him on IR and give him a redshirt season is probably the best option for the whole situation,' Porter said. 'They've already put a decent amount of work into him. But it's a business and you never know what could happen.'

Footballguys view: This is actually ideal if you have more than one IR spot in your dynasty league. Lyerla has athletic upside with just about any TE in the league, and he's on Aaron Rodgers' team. He's a long-term stash in deep dynasty and TE premium dynasty.

Vikings | Jerome Simpson talks about appeal hearing    Tue Aug 19, 11:25 PM

Packers | Davante Adams working to gain trust    Tue Aug 19, 11:15 PM

Green Bay Packers WR Davante Adams said he is working to gain the trust of QB Aaron Rodgers. 'Just making sure that it becomes second nature,' Adams said about what he needs to work on most. 'Everything out there is just flowing and I don't have to worry about thinking too much and I can just play.'

Footballguys view: Adams is set to inherit a nice role in a potent pass offense if one of the Packers top three receivers go down. He could also pass Jarrett Boykin at some point this year if Boykin doesn't pick it up from a so-so camp and preseason. Adams should be on your waiver wire speed dial list.

Saints | Mark Ingram's role evolving    Tue Aug 19, 10:50 PM

New Orleans Saints RB Mark Ingram has never had a touchdown reception during the regular season, but he took a screen pass for a 23-yard touchdown in the team's preseason game Friday, Aug. 15.

Footballguys view: Don't assume Ingram is going to become a high volume receiving back. One or two catches a game could make him a less dicey flex play, but he will still be in a three-headed backfield.

Panthers | Fozzy Whittaker in good shape    Tue Aug 19, 10:22 PM

Carolina Panthers RB Fozzy Whittaker appears to be in good shape for winning a spot on the 53-man roster after the team traded RB Kenjon Barner to the Philadelphia Eagles Tuesday, Aug. 19.

Footballguys view: As with all of the Panthers backs, it is just about impossible to attain consistent weekly value, but Whittaker is a good all-around back who will help in case Jonathan Stewart can't stay healthy.
