Broncos | Julius Thomas likely leaving Denver? Mon Feb 23, 06:20 PM
Denver Broncos impending free-agent TE Julius Thomas is unlikely to be re-signed by the team, as his market value will likely exceed what the Broncos are willing to pay. The Broncos tried to sign Thomas to a five-year, $40 million extension last summer, but he wasn't comfortable with the guaranteed money and structuring.
|Footballguys view: We're not surprised. Julius Thomas is going to be out of their price range, plus as a non-blocker he's an odd fit in the Gary Kubiak system. Teams who could have interest in Julius Thomas include the Jacksonville Jaguars, Cleveland Browns and New England Patriots.|

Broncos | Candidates to be re-signed Mon Feb 23, 06:20 PM
Denver Broncos impending free-agent LB Nate Irving, C Will Montgomery and TEs Virgil Green and Jacob Tamme are priorities to be re-signed this offseason. However, Irving figures to test the free-agent market with LBs Danny Trevathan and Brandon Marshall set as inside linebackers.
|Footballguys view: Green is an underrated receiver who could take on a much larger role if Julius Thomas moves on in free agency. Tamme could return because he's a good special teams player and very close to QB Peyton Manning. Irving is a decent player--primarily as a two-down thumper--but he could draw some interest on the open market.|

Broncos | Several players not expected to return Mon Feb 23, 06:15 PM
Denver Broncos impending free-agent DT Terrance Knighton, OG Orlando Franklin and FS Rahim Moore are not expected to return to the team next season.
|Footballguys view: Knighton could move on to the Oakland Raiders where he'd be reunited with Jack Del Rio for a third time in his career. Franklin probably will get some looks at tackle again, and Moore might be a bit too pricey for the Broncos to keep around.|

Vikings | Adrian Peterson's father denies report Mon Feb 23, 06:07 PM
Minnesota Vikings RB Adrian Peterson's father denied a report that Peterson no longer wants to play for Minnesota. Peterson's father said Peterson is still open to a return to the Vikings. Peterson himself said earlier this month that he feels uneasy about returning to Minnesota because he felt there were some people in the organization who wanted him off the field last season. It was also previously reported that Peterson's agent and members of the Vikings' front office had a heated exchange during the NFL Scouting Combine this week.
|Footballguys view: We're at the "he said, she said" point with Peterson. He's still suspended and can't ask for reinstatement until after April 15th. We should (might...maybe...please!?!) have a better idea about his situation at that time.|

Cowboys | Morris Claiborne's could go to PUP list Mon Feb 23, 05:47 PM
Dallas Cowboys CB Morris Claiborne (knee) is on his way back from a torn patellar tendon and could begin training camp on the Physically Unable to Perform list.
|Footballguys view: The Cowboys are not going to rush him. If he needs some extra time to heal at the beginning of the season, then Dallas will shelve him for at least six weeks on the PUP list. On the training camp PUP list he could return at any time.|

Panthers | Cam Newton deal won't be rushed Mon Feb 23, 05:32 PM
Carolina Panthers QB Cam Newton's expected new long-term contract may get done later rather than sooner. The topic of Newton's new deal was not even discussed when Newton's representatives and the Panthers met during the NFL scouting combine.
|Footballguys view: We're likely to see Newton wait until Andrew Luck (Colts) and Russell Wilson (Seahawks) set the new market. If a new deal is not done this year, Carolina could franchise tag him in 2016.|

Cardinals | Ted Ginn Jr. released Mon Feb 23, 04:51 PM
Arizona Cardinals WR Ted Ginn Jr. was released Monday, Feb. 23.
|Footballguys view: This move saves the Cardinals $2.5 million, but they do have to eat $1.5 million in dead money remaining on his contract. Ginn could find a home with a team that is in need of veteran WR depth and an upgrade at kick/punt returner.|

NFL | Jameis Winston historically rated Mon Feb 23, 04:44 PM
Florida State QB Jameis Winston will be the second-highest rated quarterback prospect in the last 10 years (Andrew Luck being first) by ESPN draft guru Todd McShay.
|Footballguys view: Let's not get crazy here. Winston reminds us of Ben Roethlisberger (Steelers) on film, but he still has to play up to that potential as a pro. This is far from a historic QB class, and Winston is a good prospect....not a historically good prospect like Luck was when he came out of Stanford.|
Buccaneers | Da'Quan Bowers unlikely to stay Mon Feb 23, 04:28 PM
Tampa Bay Buccaneers impending free-agent DE Da'Quan Bowers has been a bust since being drafted in 2011, and he was in danger of being cut last summer. The current regime in Tampa has nothing invested in his future.
|Footballguys view: Bowers just can't stay healthy. It's a problem that has plagued him ever since he came into the league.|

Buccaneers | Mason Foster not in team's plans? Mon Feb 23, 04:27 PM
Tampa Bay Buccaneers impending free-agent LB Mason Foster is not expected to be re-signed by the team, because his questionable coverage skills aren't a good fit for head coach Lovie Smith's Cover 2 scheme on defense.
|Footballguys view: It might be time for Foster to move on. Foster seems to be a much better fit with the Atlanta Falcons.|

Panthers | DeAngelo Williams not released Mon Feb 23, 04:18 PM
Updating a previous report, Carolina Panthers RB DeAngelo Williams has not been released and is not expected to be released Monday, Feb. 23. It was previously reported that Williams had been released.
|Footballguys view: Not yet is what the headline should read. Williams time in Carolina is likely done, and this is good news for Jonathan Stewart. We'll see if the Panthers officially announce any move with Williams in the near future. Williams is not the same player he used to be, but he could find a home with a team interested in adding veteran depth at the running back position.|

Vikings | Adrian Peterson's situation worsens Mon Feb 23, 02:47 PM
Minnesota Vikings RB Adrian Peterson's situation with the team worsened during the NFL scouting combine as his agent and members of Minnesota's front office had a heated verbal altercation, according to sources. Peterson's agent, Ben Dogra, reportedly said that Peterson would never play for the Vikings again.
|Footballguys view: Ugh, here we go. This situation looks uglier by the second. At this time, it looks like Peterson's time with the Vikings is done. We'll see if the Vikings trade him away in the near future. He's still suspended indefinitely, and Peterson can't be reinstated before April 15th.|

NFL | Byron Jones posts outstanding broad jump Mon Feb 23, 02:18 PM

Dolphins | Charles Clay likely to receive big salary Mon Feb 23, 01:39 PM
Miami Dolphins impending free-agent TE Charles Clay is expected to receive at least $6 million per season in his next contract, according to a source.
|Footballguys view: That sounds about right. The franchise tag number for tight ends is around $7.4 million. Clay is not quite at that level, but he does deserve a deal that pays him around $6 million annually. The Dolphins want to keep him around, but we'll see if they're willing to pay that price.|

NFL | Marcus Mariota solid at combine Mon Feb 23, 01:25 PM
Oregon QB Marcus Mariota showed an easy throwing motion during the NFL Scouting Combine and also showed good deep-ball accuracy. He ran the 40-yard dash in 4.52 seconds and recorded a 36-inch vertical jump and a 10-foot-1 broad jump.
|Footballguys view: Mariota should be able to develop into a good starter at the pro level. He's going to have to get used to throwing into tighter coverage, working from under snap and actually calling plays. At Oregon, he used a signal-based offense, threw to wide open guys and was always in the shotgun.|
Giants | NY committed to Rueben Randle? Mon Feb 23, 01:17 PM
New York Giants WR Rueben Randle appears to have the commitment from the team heading into next season after being benched twice in 2014. However, general manager Jerry Reese left open the possibility that the team could draft another receiver this year. 'I think Rueben gets banged on a lot. Sometimes he should get banged on, but I think he gets banged on sometimes a little too much,' Reese said. 'I think he is a good, young player and all he needs are some chances. With Odell and Victor, I think he will get plenty of chances.'
|Footballguys view: Randle is--and has always been--inconsistent as a receiver. The Giants are set up top with two star receivers in Cruz and Beckham. Preston Parker, Corey Washington or Marcus Harris could be backup plans if Randle doesn't pan out.|

Vikings | Brian Peters signs Mon Feb 23, 01:11 PM
Free-agent LB Brian Peters (Canadian League) signed an undisclosed deal with the Minnesota Vikings Monday, Feb. 23.
|Footballguys view: Peters is an average prospect who is likely to be a camp body for the Vikings. Perhaps he could impress the Vikings enough to stick around as a special teams player.|
NFL | Jameis Winston throws well at combine Mon Feb 23, 01:10 PM
Florida State QB Jameis Winston showed an easy throwing motion during the NFL Scouting Combine and also showed good deep-ball accuracy. He ran the 40-yard dash in 4.97 seconds and 4.99 seconds and recorded a 28 1/2-inch vertical jump and an 8-foot-7 broad jump.
|Footballguys view: There are few questions about Winston on the football field. He's a big quarterback who can sluff off defenders while keeping plays alive with his feet. He has a strong arm, and Winston is not afraid to throw into coverage to challenge a defense.|
Cardinals | Bruce Arians, Steve Keim sign extensions Mon Feb 23, 01:09 PM
Arizona Cardinals head coach Bruce Arians and general manager Steve Keim have signed contract extensions that will run through the 2018 season.
|Footballguys view: Congratulations to the David Dodds look alike! We love coach Arians, and his offense is one of the most exciting in the game....when they can find good QB play. Carson Palmer returns to the lineup this year, and he'll help the entire offense look better.|
Falcons | Justin Forsett interests Atlanta Mon Feb 23, 11:28 AM
Baltimore Ravens impending free-agent RB Justin Forsett is of high interest to the Atlanta Falcons if he reaches free agency.
|Footballguys view: Forsett is going to get some interest on the open market after his 1,000-yard season with the Ravens last year. The Falcons added Kyle Shanahan as their offensive coordinator this year. Forsett and Shanahan spent time together in Houston when they were both with the Texans.|

Giants | Jason Pierre-Paul could see franchise tag Mon Feb 23, 08:51 AM
New York Giants impending free-agent DE Jason Pierre-Paul will be franchise tagged if the two sides can't agree to an extension by March 2, according to a team source.
|Footballguys view: The Giants have to decide whether or not they want to invest long term in Pierre-Paul. He's a talented pass-rusher, but problems with staying healthy have plagued him during his career.|

Steelers | James Harrison wants to play Mon Feb 23, 03:07 AM
Free-agent OLB James Harrison (Steelers) has decided he wants to play football in 2015. Harrison would prefer to return to the Pittsburgh Steelers if at all possible.
|Footballguys view: Harrison could stick around in Pittsburgh, or he could follow former Steelers DC Dick LeBeau to the Titans.|

Giants | Was Odell Beckham Jr. hurt? Mon Feb 23, 02:47 AM
New York Giants WR Odell Beckham Jr., who claimed he played part of the season with two torn hamstrings, had his claim questioned by Giants general manager Jerry Reese. 'I don't know about that,' Reese said. 'I think he's trying to be a hero. I don't think you can play with two [tears in your] hamstring and run fast like that. I think our doctors would've caught that.'
|Footballguys view: Beckham has the upside to be a superstar in this league. Fantasy owners should be considering him in the first or second round of their fantasy drafts for 2015.|
Broncos | Want Rahim Moore back at right price Mon Feb 23, 02:37 AM
Free-agent FS Rahim Moore (Broncos) is wanted back by the Denver Broncos, but the team wants him to return at a more friendly price.
|Footballguys view: There's not a great free safety class in free agency or the draft. The Broncos spent a lot of money on their secondary last year, so Moore is going to have to stay for a good price.|

Vikings | Adrian Peterson has not asked for trade Sun Feb 22, 11:50 PM
Minnesota Vikings RB Adrian Peterson has not asked for a trade to the Dallas Cowboys and has not had any conversations with Vikings general manager Rick Spielman, according to a source with knowledge of the situation.
|Footballguys view: Peterson has not asked for a trade, but his future with the Vikings is up in the air right now. We'll have to wait and see how things shake out between the two sides in the near future.|

Falcons | Likely interested in Mason Foster Sun Feb 22, 11:14 PM
Tampa Bay Buccaneers impending free-agent LB Mason Foster is expected to draw interest from the Atlanta Falcons. Assistant head coach Raheem Morris drafted Foster when he was head coach with the Buccaneeers.
|Footballguys view: Foster does a good job of finding the ball-carrier as the plays unfold in front of him. He could be a tackling machine for head coach Dan Quinn and the new-look Falcons defense.|

Falcons | Dan Quinn praises Dwight Lowery Sun Feb 22, 11:14 PM
Atlanta Falcons impending free-agent SS Dwight Lowery has left all negotiations with the team up to his agent, and the two sides were expected to meet Sunday, Feb. 22.
|Footballguys view: Quinn's praise holds a lot of weight around the league. The Falcons new head coach should be able to help this defense play better in 2015. Quinn mentioned how he likes Lowery's versatility, and he had Lowery as a player when he was a coach with the New York Jets.|

Browns | Brian Hoyer's status up in air Sun Feb 22, 09:20 PM
Cleveland Browns impending free-agent QB Brian Hoyer's agent met with the Browns in January, but it is uncertain when negotiations will relaunch.
|Footballguys view: Hoyer is a boring option for any team looking for a quarterback. He's 'OK' as a starter, but his play is nothing to write home about. The Browns would love to be mediocre in 2015, and Hoyer would help them be below average if he's kept around and if he can stay healthy.|

Browns | CLE meets with DeVante Parker Sun Feb 22, 09:19 PM
Louisville WR DeVante Parker had an informal meeting with the Cleveland Browns. He is considered a first-round prospect and good route runner.
|Footballguys view: The Browns have to find an upgrade at the WR position. They'll be considering WRs with one of their two first-round picks in the 2015 NFL draft. Parker has sticky hands and can make crazy catches. He lacks top-end speed, but Parker does a good job of setting up routes and getting open.|
Browns | Jordan Cameron likely done in CLE Sun Feb 22, 09:18 PM
Cleveland Browns impending free-agent TE Jordan Cameron is not expected to be re-signed by the team.
|Footballguys view: The Browns are a mess on offense, and Cameron wants out. Teams like the Broncos could be interested in the talented tight end. He will have no shortage of suitors on the open market.|

Cleveland Browns DT Phil Taylor is due $5.5 million in the final year of his rookie deal.

Texans | DeAndre Hopkins recovering from surgery Sun Feb 22, 08:01 PM
Houston Texans WR DeAndre Hopkins (wrist) said in a radio interview that he had surgery to repair a torn ligament in his wrist after the regular season. He said he had a pin and rod inserted into the wrist that was set to be removed Saturday, Feb. 21. He expects to resume regular activities in a couple of weeks.
|Footballguys view: Hopkins should be good to go when minicamp opens up, although the Texans may want to bring him along slowly as he comes back from this injury. Either way, it's not going to hamper him in training camp. What could hold him back is the bad QB situation the Texans have. Ryan Mallett or Tom Savage could be the lead QB for Houston in 2015....and neither are good options.|

NFL | Devin Smith's dash time surprises Sun Feb 22, 08:00 PM
Ohio State WR Devin Smith failed to break into the 4.3's at the NFL Combine Saturday, Feb. 21, surprising many. However, his representation said the problem was all in the initial 10 yards. Throughout the combine he has been checking in a 1.45 seconds in the first 10 yards, but for some reason he was at 1.55 in Saturday's workout.
|Footballguys view: Smith will be able to get his time back where he wants at the Ohio State pro day. Most see Smith as a second-round pick.|
Lions | Positive meeting with Nick Fairley Sun Feb 22, 08:00 PM
Updating a previous report, representation of Detroit Lions impending free-agent DT Nick Fairley and the team met at the NFL Combine Sunday, Feb. 22, and the team expressed an interest in keeping Fairley. The meeting was characterized as being 'very positive.'
|Footballguys view: The Lions did not pick up Fairley's fifth-year option, so he's set to be an unrestricted free agent when the new league year begins. They could bring him back to Detroit, depending on how much his new contract is--and on how much they spend on Ndamukong Suh.|

Chiefs | KC interested in Justin Hardy Sun Feb 22, 07:59 PM
The Kansas City Chiefs are reportedly very high on East Carolina WR Justin Hardy, according to sources at the NFL Combine.
|Footballguys view: The Chiefs need all the help they can get at the WR position. Hardy would be a good fit as he's an explosive player who can adjust to poorly thrown passes. More than 70 percent of Hardy's catches went for a first down in 2014. He's likely to be a third- or fourth-round pick in the 2015 NFL draft.|
Broncos | Nate Irving receiving interest Sun Feb 22, 01:29 PM
Denver Broncos impending free-agent LB Nate Irving (knee) is expected to be an option for some teams even though he suffered a torn anterior cruciate ligament in November, according to a source.
|Footballguys view: Irving is a two-down thumper as a run-defender, and he's better in coverage than some think. However, he's struggled with injuries during his pro career and that should keep his price down.|

Broncos | Orlando Franklin not expected back Sun Feb 22, 01:28 PM
Denver Broncos impending free-agent OG Orlando Franklin is not expected to re-sign with the Broncos, because he likely will receive more money from another team.
|Footballguys view: No surprise here. Franklin will likely move on in free agency, and he probably wants to go back to playing tackle. Last year, the Broncos moved him to guard and he wasn't initially happy about the switch.|
Bills | Buffalo looking at Charles Clay Sun Feb 22, 01:06 PM
Miami Dolphins impending free-agent TE Charles Clay is a player the Buffalo Bills are considering pursuing in free agency.
|Footballguys view: Clay would provide an upgrade over what they have right now in Scott Chandler. The Dolphins would be wise to keep the versatile Clay around if they can.|

Cardinals | Andre Ellington needs to build strength Sun Feb 22, 12:42 PM
Arizona Cardinals RB Andre Ellington needs to bulk up and improve his strength this offseason so he can stay healthy for an entire season, according to general manager Steve Keim. Keim said he believes Ellington can be a featured back in the NFL.
|Footballguys view: Ellington was never healthy last year, and it showed on the field. If healthy and a bit bulkier, Ellington could certainly be a feature back. He has an all-purpose skill set and can be effectively used on all three downs.|

NFL | Shane Ray not cleared to run Sun Feb 22, 11:06 AM
Missouri DE Shane Ray (foot) was not cleared to run at the NFL Scouting Combine because of a foot injury.
|Footballguys view: Shane Ray is likely to be a top-10 pick in the 2015 NFL draft. The foot injury should clear up in time for him to workout for scouts at Mizzou's pro day. Ray plays explosively and with a violent nature. He's a disruptive pass-rusher who arrives at the ball-carrier with a thud. It's hard to find many flaws to his game.|
NFL | Randy Gregory posts solid 40 times Sun Feb 22, 10:18 AM
Nebraska LB Randy Gregory posted unofficial times of 4.64 seconds and 4.57 seconds in the 40-yard dash at the NFL Scouting Combine.
|Footballguys view: Gregory could be a top-5 pick in the 2015 NFL draft. He has a long frame, and this helps his as both a pass-rusher and as a run-defender. Gregory can bat down passes at the line of scrimmage if he doesn't get to the quarterback in time for a sack. He does need to add more muscle to his frame as tackles who get a lock on him can usher him right out of the way.|
