Patriots | Unlikely to sign Sammy Morris    Sun Jun 24, 01:23 PM

The New England Patriots are not expected to sign free-agent RB Sammy Morris (Cowboys) unless they have an injury at the position.

Footballguys view: The Patriots added Joseph Addai earlier this year in free agency, and now their RB corps is jam packed with talent. Second-year RBs Shane Vereen and Stevan Ridley will compete for the lead spot on the depth chart. Veterans Danny Woodhead and Addai will compete to be the lead change of pace RB.

Patriots | Questions at running back    Fri Jun 22, 02:45 AM

It appears the New England Patriots will rely on second-year RBs Shane Vereen and Stevan Ridley as their top runners in 2012. However, the pair has more questions surrounding them than answers right now. Vereen had just 15 carries as a rookie because of injury problems and Ridley had fumble problems in consecutive games last year, which led to a quick hook from the field. The team has veteran RBs Joseph Addai and Danny Woodhead on roster and they may, as reported, have interest in re-signing RB Sammy Morris.

Footballguys view: The Patriots backfield is a cluster you-know-what right now. For fantasy purposes it's best to avoid any of these RBs. If one does emerge we feel it could be Vereen as he's got the best all-around skill set. If you're feeling lucky, grab Vereen late in your draft as a "lottery" pick.

Patriots | Have shown interest in Sammy Morris     Thu Jun 21, 03:15 PM

Free-agent RB Sammy Morris (Cowboys) said the New England Patriots have talked to him about the possibility of signing with the team.

Footballguys view: Morris would add yet another veteran RB to the mix in New England. Earlier this offseason the Patriots added free agent Joseph Addai. The Pats have a jammed RB corps and adding Morris would only frustrate and confuse fantasy owners further. As it stands now Stevan Ridley is the first Patriots RB to come off the board in most fantasy drafts. His current ADP is at the end of the 8th round as RB37.

Cowboys | Rushing attack nearly non-existent in Week 17    Mon Jan 2, 01:26 AM

Dallas Cowboys RB Felix Jones (hamstring) carried 11 times for just 30 yards in Week 17 against the New York Giants, and he added seven receptions for 47 yards. RB Sammy Morris had three carries for 16 yards, and QB Tony Romo added three yards on two runs.

Cowboys | Felix Jones feeling good    Fri Dec 30, 08:26 PM

Dallas Cowboys RB Felix Jones (hamstring) said Friday, Dec. 30, that he feels good heading into Week 17 against the New York Giants. 'I'm feeling good,' Jones said. If Jones isn't able to go, or is limited, the bulk of the carries would go to RB Sammy Morris. However, with a playoff berth on the line against the Giants, Jones is expected to play.

Footballguys view: We would err on the side of playing Jones unless you have a clearly better option to plug in over him.

Cowboys | Sammy Morris does little with opportunity    Sun Dec 25, 12:11 AM

Dallas Cowboys RB Sammy Morris carried 13 times for just 29 yards in the Week 16 game against the Philadelphia Eagles. He also had four receptions for 10 yards. Morris saw an increased workload with RB Felix Jones (hamstring) dealing with a hamstring injury coming in, but Morris struggled.

Cowboys | Jerry Jones says Sammy Morris will have big role    Fri Dec 23, 10:14 PM

Dallas Cowboys owner and general manager Jerry Jones said Friday, Dec. 23, that RB Sammy Morris will have a bigger role than expected in Week 16. 'Morris has been a pleasant surprise,' Jones said in a radio interview Friday. 'He's had a good week. Sammy Morris, I think tomorrow he is going to play and he's going to play more than we thought he was going to play thinking back last week. I'm confident he will do the job.'

Footballguys view: This should encourage you to play Morris as a flex if you are desperate even Felix Jones is active.

Cowboys | Sammy Morris could have bigger role    Fri Dec 23, 02:24 PM

Dallas Cowboys RB Sammy Morris could have a bigger role in the offense in Week 16 with RB Felix Jones (hamstring) being questionable for the game.

Footballguys view: Morris is still only a "what the heck flex" level play unless Felix Jones is inactive.

Cowboys | Felix Jones questionable    Fri Dec 23, 02:20 PM

Dallas Cowboys RB Felix Jones (hamstring) is being listed as questionable for the team's Week 16 game against the Philadelphia Eagles. Jones is still expected to play despite being limited in practice. 'It would surprise me if Felix does not go,' owner/general manager Jerry Jones said. 'That would surprise me. On the other hand, it would be madness not to recognize that he hasn't practiced all week, so you better have another plan in place.' RB Sammy Morris will start if Jones can't go.

Footballguys view: Jones will probably at least have his workload reduced and he might not be as effective on what touches he does get. He also carries a risk of re-injury or aggravation during the game. Jones should be considered a boom/bust flex a la Kevin Smith for the last few weeks.

Cowboys | Felix Jones misses practice    Tue Dec 20, 06:14 PM

Dallas Cowboys RB Felix Jones (hamstring) did not practice Tuesday, Dec. 20, due to hamstring tightness. RBs Sammy Morris and Chauncey Washington split repetitions as a result. Head coach Jason Garrett is hoping Jones will participate in practice at some point this week and play in Week 16.

Footballguys view: If Jones can't start this weekend then we could see veteran Sammy Morris get the start for the Cowboys.

Cowboys | Sammy Morris to be third-down back?    Tue Dec 13, 12:15 PM

Dallas Cowboys RB Sammy Morris could become the team's third-down back to help spell RB Felix Jones.

Footballguys view: Morris is a versatile back who has a no-nonsense running style. He could be the team's goalline back as well because of his leg drive and nose for the end zone.

Cowboys | Expected to sign Sammy Morris    Mon Dec 12, 04:27 PM

Updating a previous report, the Dallas Cowboys are scheduled to meet with free-agent RB Sammy Morris (Patriots) and are expected to sign him.

Chiefs | Sammy Morris works out     Thu Sep 22, 09:18 AM

The Kansas City Chiefs worked out free-agent RB Sammy Morris (Patriots), according to a league source with knowledge of the situation. Morris was not signed to a contract.

Footballguys view: The Chiefs are looking for RB help with Jamaal Charles on Injured Reserve. Taking a look at Morris makes a lot of sense because of his prior working relationship with GM Scott Pioli.

Patriots | Sammy Morris released    Sat Sep 3, 03:16 PM

Patriots | Sammy Morris agrees to terms    Wed Jul 27, 05:24 PM

The New England Patriots have agreed to terms with free-agent RB Sammy Morris (Patriots) on a one-year deal. Financial terms were not disclosed.

Footballguys view: As if the Patriots backfield could have gotten more crowded. Morris will be a minor player unless there is an injury epidemic at RB for New England (which has happened frequently in recent years).

Patriots | Veteran RB Morris not retiring    Mon May 9, 02:02 PM

Karen Guregian, from the Boston Herald, reports veteran RB Sammy Morris indicated at Vince Wilfork's draft party fund-raiser he still wanted to play, but was uncertain about his status with the Pats.

Footballguys view: Morris is 34-years old and has been injured off and on during his pro career. Some team may show an interest in him as a veteran backup. The Rams could be an option for him because of new offensive coordinator Josh McDaniels. The team is looking for better depth behind starter Steven Jackson too.

Patriots | Sammy Morris still wants to play    Mon May 2, 03:41 PM

Karen Guregian, from the Boston Herald, reports New England Patriots impending free-agent RB Sammy Morris said he wants to continue playing but is not sure if he will be re-signing with the Patriots or will have to sign with another team.

Footballguys view: The Patriots added two running backs in the 2011 NFL Draft, so it seems Morris could find himself on the outside looking in if he stays with the team. He's a good runner and receiver out of the backfield but injuries have constantly hampered his career.

Patriots | Sammy Morris unlikely to return    Fri Apr 29, 09:54 PM

New England Patriots RB Sammy Morris is a long-shot to return to the team in 2011 after the Patriots selected two running backs during the first three rounds of the NFL Draft.

Footballguys view: Morris had his moments, but he's never been spectacular. The Patriots have no problems jettisoning vets and Morris will probably be shopping his services when free agency launches again.

Patriots | Sammy Morris not considering retiring    Wed Mar 2, 02:45 PM

New England Patriots impending free-agent RB Sammy Morris' agent, Mark Slough, said Morris has no intention of retiring and hopes to play for a team next season, reports Ian Rapoport, of the Boston Herald. Slough said he is not sure if the Patriots will look to re-sign Morris.

Footballguys view: Morris is a sound veteran running back, but injuries and inconsistencies have marred his pro career. The Pats may decide to move on with BenJarvus Green-Ellis, Danny Woodhead, and Kevin Faulk.

Patriots | Sammy Morris may not return    Fri Jan 21, 02:30 PM

The New England Patriots may not re-sign impending free-agent RB Sammy Morris this offseason, reports Ian Rapoport, of the Boston Herald.

Footballguys view: Morris never made the most of his potential with the Patriots, but he did flash his skills from time to time. He's a versatile veteran, but age and injuries are a concern for him at this point in his career.

Patriots | Sammy Morris lighter    Fri Aug 13, 10:28 PM

New England Patriots RB Sammy Morris said weighs the lightest he has in a long time and is feeling pretty good, reports Jay Asser, of WEEI.com. He said he prides himself on being a versatile player, and is fine playing on special teams, at fullback, at running back or catching the football.

Footballguys view: Morris could have value this year if injuries strike the Patriots backfield. He's still the most complete back on the roster.

Patriots | Rushing statistics misleading    Mon Jul 26, 03:58 PM

The New England Patriots rushed for 1,921 yards and 19 touchdowns last year, while averaging 4.1 yards per carry as a team, reports Tom E. Curran, of Comcast SportsNet. However, while the numbers look good on paper, the running attack for the patriots is explosive, young or healthy. The quartet of Laurence Maroney, Kevin Faulk, Fred Taylor and Sammy Morris provide more yawns than fear entering the year and the Patriots didn't address the position during the offseason.

Footballguys view: The Patriots will be able to use any combination of runners (let's throw BenJarvus Green-Ellis on the list too) to get a productive running game in 2010. Maroney has a shot to be the feature back, but has failed to live up to expectations. Morris and Taylor are valuable veterans who need to stay healthy, and Green-Ellis has an intriguing blend of power and speed.

Patriots | Scenario where RB Taylor is on the roster bubble?    Sun Jun 27, 08:07 PM

Mike Reiss, from ESPNBoston.com, reports one player he's anxious to watch in Patriots training camp is veteran running back Fred Taylor. While Reiss still thinks Taylor can add a lot to a team, he could also envision a scenario in which the veteran back is fighting for a roster spot based on numbers at other positions.

Footballguys view: The Patriots backfield is jam packed with talent, but nobody has been as productive as Fred Taylor. He's competing for playing time with veterans Laurence Maroney, Sammy Morris, and Kevin Faulk. We'll see how this battle shakes out in training camp.

Patriots | RB BenJarvus Green-Ellis one to watch    Sun May 16, 10:46 PM

Mike Reiss, from ESPNBoston.com, reports the Patriots did not draft a running back and Fred Taylor, Sammy Morris and Kevin Faulk all enter the final year of their contracts. That makes third-year man BenJarvus Green-Ellis a player to pay extra-close attention to in training camp.

Footballguys view: Green-Ellis has proven that he can be an effective runner in the NFL on limited opportunities. He's a compact back that can grind out the tough yards, but has enough speed to break off a big run from time to time. The Patriots love to use a RBBC, but Green-Ellis could be the lead back in that committee as soon as next season.

Patriots | Team to ride hot hand at RB Sunday    Fri Jan 8, 07:22 PM

Ian R. Rapoport, of The Boston Herald, reports New England Patriots head coach Bill Belichick and running backs coach Ivan Fears have made no secret about riding the running back who is performing the best during the team's Wild Card game Sunday, Jan. 10. RB Laurence Maroney was benched Week 16 after fumbling the ball and was inactive Week 17. RB Fred Taylor (ankle) scored twice Week 17 after returning from his ankle injury, and RB Sammy Morris had a season-high 95 rushing yards Week 16. Fears said, "They're all available. When game time runs around, we'll call somebody's number. If somebody gets hot, he's going to play a lot more. That's the way it goes."
