The Minnesota Vikings could decide to split carries between RB Toby Gerhart and RB Albert Young as the team's No. 2 running back this season, reports Tom Pelissero, of 1500ESPN.com. Head coach Brad Childress said, "I think it'll be by week and who we're facing and what exactly we need out of a second running back. If you remember last year, there were numbers of games where we didn't have a third running back up, and from time to time, that'll happen when we need maybe another tight end up or need another rush guy."

The Minnesota Vikings are making plans in case WR Percy Harvin (migraines) is unable to perform punt and kickoff return duties, reports 1500ESPN.com's Tom Pelissero. 'It's going to have to be a week-to-week decision,' special teams coordinator Brian Murphy said. 'Obviously, his situation isn't one that you can predict. That's the reason why we're trying to rep as many people as we can - to have alternatives.' RB Darius Reynaud is the clear favorite for a role returning punts and could also factor in on kickoffs. RB Albert Young could also be used on kickoffs. CBs Asher Allen and Marcus Sherels have also been tried on punt returns, but Allen hasn't performed well and Sherels is a long shot to make the team.

Minnesota Vikings rookie RB Toby Gerhart is expected to compete with RB Albert Young for snaps behind starting RB Adrian Peterson, reports Brian Murphy, of The Pioneer Press. Gerhart wasn't sure what type of role he will play for the Vikings. 'He surely has the ability to step up in front of a linebacker and be able to (pass) protect just like Chester (Taylor) and really Albert,' head coach Brad Childress said. Vice president of player personnel Rick Spielman said the team selected him to play tailback and not simply to work as a battering ram in front of Peterson. 'I always felt and believed that you have to have two backs in this league,' Spielman said.

Mark Craig, of the Minneapolis Star Tribune, reports Minnesota Vikings head coach Brad Childress said during a radio interview Friday, March 12, not to rule out RB Albert Young being promoted from the No. 3 running back spot. 'Probably not enough has been said about Albert Young,' Childress said. 'Albert Young is a guy that has developed here tremendously in the last two years. As a matter of fact, Brett Favre and I had a long conversation about him when we were down south, and he believes he's got a chance to be a good back in this league.'
