The Carolina Panthers have placed WR Wallace Wright (shoulder) on Injured Reserve, ending his 2010 season, reports Steve Reed, of CarolinaGrowl.com. He will need surgery on his injured shoulder.

Footballguys view: Wright flashed some big play ability as a receiver, but losing him for the year will hurt mainly in the return game.

Panthers | Receivers not stepping up to claim starting job    Sat Aug 21, 02:15 PM

Carolina Panthers WRs Dwayne Jarrett, Kenny Moore, Brandon LaFell and Wallace Wright have not stepped up to claim the team's No. 2 starting receiver position, reports The Associated Press. 'I think it's still shaking out,' general manager Marty Hurney said.

Footballguys view: The battle to be a starter opposite of Steve Smith should boil down to Dwayne Jarrett vs Brandon LaFell. Jarrett has been a disappointment over the course of his career, but has been playing much better in camp this year. LaFell is the rookie out of LSU with a good size/speed combination. We'll see if any distance is gained between these two over the next couple of weeks.

Panthers | Four competing for No. 2 WR job    Sun Aug 15, 01:28 PM

Carolina Panthers wide receiver coach Tyke Tolbert views WRs Brandon LaFell, Dwayne Jarrett, Wallace Wright and Kenny Moore as candidates for the team's No. 2 wide receiver job, reports Steve Reed, of CarolinaGrowl.com.

Footballguys view: Jarrett might be resurrecting his career like former Trojans wideout Mike Williams is doing in Seattle. Rookie Brandon LaFell has a good size/speed combination and can get to top speed in a hurry. Wright has the knack to make big plays, and Moore can help as a receiver or a return man. This race is too close to call at this point, but we feel it will either be LaFell or Jarrett lining up opposite Steve Smith in week one.

Panthers | Wright hopes to do more in 2010    Sat Jun 5, 07:22 PM

CBSSports.com reports Panthers WR Wallace Wright is viewed as a very good special teams player, but he hopes to work more at receiver this year. "That's my goal," Wright said Friday. "I got into the league playing special teams, and I excelled at it in New York. They brought me in here to work on special teams but also to help on offense." That said, the best Wright can hope for is being the fourth or fifth receiver on the roster. He is currently behind Steve Smith, Dwayne Jarrett, Brandon LaFell and Armanti Edwards on the depth chart.

Footballguys view: Wright was with the Jets last year and earned a lot of praise from head coach Rex Ryan. That praise didn't lead to much opportunity on the field last year, but Wright is hoping for a fresh start with his new team. We're not expecting much from him unless injuries hit in front of him on the depth chart.

Panthers | Wright looks right for the team    Sun May 30, 02:10 PM

CBSSports.com reports the Panthers added WR Wallace Wright this offseason for his special teams ability, but he's turned some heads with some nice catches this week in practice and shown good speed. That said, the best Wright can hope for is being the fourth or fifth receiver on the roster. He is currently behind Steve Smith, Dwayne Jarrett, Brandon LaFell and Armanti Edwards on the depth chart.

Footballguys view: Wright was with the New York Jets last year, and head coach Rex Ryan often commented on his play making ability. He was barely used with the Jets, and is a dark horse to get some playing time at wide receiver for the Panthers. Wright should make the final roster, but it may be primarily because of his special teams ability.

Panthers | Wright signed    Mon Mar 8, 06:33 PM

Darin Gantt, of the Rock Hill Herald, reports the Carolina Panthers have signed unrestricted free-agent WR Wallace Wright (Jets). Terms of the contract were not disclosed.

Footballguys view: Wallace Wright was making a lot of plays during training camp, but never got to strut his stuff much for the Jets in the regular season. Now with the Panthers he may be a deep sleeper WR worth keeping an eye on.

Jets | No one seizing the WR2 job    Sun Aug 9, 08:20 PM

The New York Post is reporting Rex Ryan, who's in search of a second starting WR opposite Jerricho Cotchery has been mildly disappointed that no one has stepped up for the No. 2 spot, said he joked with WRs coach and former NFL WR Henry Ellard, saying, "Henry might be the best receiver on the field for us.''

Footballguys view: Ouch. The #2 wide receiver is actually the third or fourth target on the team behind WR Jerricho Cotchery, TE Dustin Keller, and RB Leon Washington. Brad Smith, Chansi Stuckey, David Clowney and Wallace Wright are all competing for that spot and the team is waiting for someone to elevate their game.

Jets | Wright becoming the go-to guy for Sanchez    Sat Aug 8, 01:04 PM

Dave Hutchinson, from the Newark Star-Ledger, reports the spotlight may find Wallace Wright as he has quietly emerged as Sanchez's go-to guy. He has had a strong training camp and capped off the first week of practice with three catches for 23 yards in the annual Green and White scrimmage on Thursday evening at SUNY-Cortland stadium. "My whole life, I have been the underdog," Wright said in his Barry White voice. "I'm used to it. I just come out here and work to get better every day."

Footballguys view: Wright has been hanging around on the Jets roster the last three years after signing as undrafted free agent out of North Carolina. Jerricho Cotchery, Dustin Keller, and Leon Washington are the top three targets in the Jets passing game but the starting WR opposite of Cotchery has yet to be determined. Wright may be a longshot to rise up to that spot on the depth chart, but if Sanchez wins the starting job we may see more of Wallace Wright than people are expecting.

Jets | Wright struggles at start of training camp    Sat Aug 1, 04:30 PM

New York Jets head coach Rex Ryan said WR Wallace Wright did a lot of great things during the summer but had two drops during practice Friday, July 31. 'Now we have to work on being consistent, because he really did show a lot of good things in the minicamp,' Ryan said. 'I'd like for him to take another jump (forward).'

Footballguys view: Wright is probably destined to remain the team's special teams ace, even though he doesn't exactly have the stiffest competition to move up the depth chart at WR.

Jets | Mystery receiver emerging for the Jets    Sat Jul 25, 05:24 PM

Jane McManus, from the Jets Journal, recently interviewed Jets head coach Rex Ryan and asked him about the open competition for the #2 WR job opposite of Jerricho Cotchery. Ryan extolled the virtues of Chansi Stuckey in the slot, David Clowney's speed and Brad Smith's versatility. Then he said: "And I think there will be a surprise come out as a receiver as well, and I'm not going to say it but this one kid, all he does is make plays."

Footballguys view: McManus thinks that it could be Wallace Wright, or the little used second-year wide receiver Marcus Henry. There is also some speculation that TE Dustin Keller may actually split out wide this season. We shall see if the mystery receiver reveals himself in training camp and preseason.

Jets | Wright impressive during minicamp    Sun Jun 14, 01:25 PM

The Associated Press reports New York Jets WR Wallace Wright was one of the team's top performers during their recent minicamp. He was on the receiving end of a pretty touchdown pass from QB Mark Sanchez.

Footballguys view: Wright also insisted that the team did not need Plaxico Burress, a player that has been linked to the Jets in the rumor mill. Wright has made a name for himself on special teams, so he should make the final roster regardless of his performance as a wide receiver. If none of Chansi Stuckey, David Clowney, and Brad Smith distinguish themselves in training camp, Wright could be a surpise contender to start, but he'll have limited fantasy value since Dustin Keller will likely be the #2 target in the passing game behind Jerricho Cotchery.
