Giants | Waive David Wilson    Wed Feb 11, 04:03 PM

New York Giants RB David Wilson has been waived Wednesday, Feb. 11. Wilson retired in 2014 due to recurring neck issues.

Footballguys view: This is just a part of the process. Waiving Wilson saves the Giants $1.3 million in cap space for 2015.

Former New York Giants RB David Wilson, who had to retire from the National Football League due to neck issues, is in training for the triple jump event at the 2016 Summer Olympics in Rio De Janeiro. Wilson has returned to Virginia Tech to train with his old track coach.

Footballguys view: We wish Wilson the best of luck in his new mission. This positive reaction to such negative news speaks to the kind of person that he is.

Giants | David Wilson finished with football    Mon Aug 4, 08:23 PM

New York Giants RB David Wilson (neck) has come to terms with the fact that his playing days are over, according to a team news release. 'I don't want anybody to feel sorry for me or pity me,' Wilson said in the release. 'I lived my dream. A lot of people only get to dream their dream. I lived that dream. Now I have a chance to dream another dream and live that, too.'

Footballguys view: So sad. Wilson is a talented back, and his NFL career will always read "what might have been." At least he's got his health, and now he'll look to move on to another career.

Giants | David Wilson likely done in NY    Mon Aug 4, 02:51 PM

New York Giants RB David Wilson's (neck) days with the team are likely numbered following advice to give up football. Wilson suffered what may very well have been a career-ending neck injury last week.

Footballguys view: We're saddened by this news. Wilson has a ton of talent, but neck injuries are difficult to come back from. The Giants should move on with Rashad Jennings as their lead back. Rookie Andre Williams will see an increase in opportunity now that Wilson is out.

Giants | David Wilson not allowed to return    Mon Aug 4, 01:02 PM

New York Giants RB David Wilson (neck) has been shut down by team doctors because of the neck injury he suffered last week, according to a source. It is believed the injury could be career ending.

Footballguys view: We feel for Wilson, who worked all the way back from his neck issue, only to have to leave the field almost immediately after returning to it. It's hard to imagine him playing again. Rookie Andre Williams generated buzz with his preseason performance, and now he'll have a clearer path to playing time.

Giants | Doctor hesitant to clear David Wilson    Thu Jul 31, 01:10 PM

Doctors for New York Giants RB David Wilson (neck) are very hesitant to clear him to return to football after suffering a neck stinger in practice.

Footballguys view: As we've heard and said, the Giants are a cautious bunch who don't fool around with neck or spine injuries. We may not see him at all. OUr own Andrew Garda is in Giants camp and reports that this shouldn't impact Rashad Jenings, who is the No. 1 anyway, but could mean Andre Williams moves up a bit. He does caution to not go overboard as Peyton Hillis and Michael Cox have seen a lot of first team snaps as well. Williams may stay relegated to the short-yardage/goal line back duties, especially given his inexperience catching the ball and protecting the quarterback. Jennings is still an RB2 for much of the staff, while the rest of the backfield has yet to sort itself out. Williams is your upside guy since he should get a lot of the goal line looks regardless of pecking order. We still view him primarily as an RB4 or RB5 though.

Giants | David Wilson attends meetings    Thu Jul 31, 11:41 AM

New York Giants RB David Wilson (neck) attended team meetings Thursday, July 31, and appeared ready to go, according to RB Rashad Jennings.

Footballguys view: The Giants, like the Packers and Patriots, can be very conservative when it comes to neck injuries, so don't expect him to be out and playing anytime soon. That said, as our own Andrew Garda reported from Giants camp earlier Thursday, Jennings reported that Wilson was very upbeat and positive and the entire backfield was supporting him. Wilson may not play this season - we just hope he gets a chance to be healthy and plays again at some point so we can see him reach his potential.

Giants | David Wilson's career likely over    Thu Jul 31, 10:48 AM

New York Giants RB David Wilson (neck) 'needs a miracle' from his surgeon's evaluation to be able to continue his playing career, according to a source.

Footballguys view: This is a pretty big blow to his comeback, though remember that the Giants are one of the more conservative teams when it comes to diagnosing neck injuries. Our own Andrew Garda is in Giants camp and spoke with Rashad Jennings who said Wilson was "upbeat" and "hopeful" while he has been attending film sessions and meetings. Jennings was already the clear-cut No. 1 back and rated as a low-end RB2 but Garda has been impressed with him in camp and reports he is getting a ton of balls thrown his way as well. This news could move up Andre Willams a bit, but keep in mind his skillset is much different than Wilson's and he has never really caught the ball regularly. He remains mostly a short yardage, goal line back and more of a factor in a touchdown heavy league as opposed to a standard league where he resides in the RB4 territory. Guys like Peyton Hillis and Michael Cox are getting a lot of reps as well, so shaking the backfield out is still an ongoing process so make sure you keep up with the camp reports.

Giants | David Wilson update    Wed Jul 30, 10:08 AM

New York Giants RB David Wilson (neck) will sit out of practice the rest of the week and won't play in the first preseason game. He underwent tests Tuesday, July 29, and will be examined by the surgeon that performed his neck fusion next week.

Footballguys view: The team needs to be incredibly cautious here. Neck injuries are tricky to come back from. Wilson is a talented player who could be a nice change-of-pace back behind Rashad Jennings this year. We'll see if he can get healthy--and stay healthy--this season.

Giants | David Wilson suffers neck burner    Tue Jul 29, 03:20 PM

Updating a previous report, New York Giants RB David Wilson (neck) left practice with a neck burner Tuesday, July 29.

Giants | David Wilson takes a hit    Fri Jul 25, 05:28 PM

New York Giants RB David Wilson (neck) took his first hit of training camp Friday, July 25, without issue. "That felt good," Wilson said.

Footballguys view: That's a great sign. Our own Andrew Garda spent the week at camp and talked to Wilson early on about how he felt. Wilson was confident he was more than ready to take the hit and it appears he was not wrong. Coach Tom Coughlin was also impressed with the back, praising his work and conditioning coming back from the injury. Garda also reported that Wilson has seen a lot of reps behind Rashad Jennings and is noted as the second back on the "unofficial" depth chart released earlier this week. Rookie Andre Williams has had a lot of buzz in fantasy circles, but Garda noted that he has been much lower in the pecking order than expected and several times was behind Peyton Hillis for carries. This will sort itself out more as camp progresses but right now Jennings is the lead and is a low-end RB2, with Wilson as an RB4/RB5 and Williams an RB6. Garda will be at camp frequently, so we'll get a first-hand look at how this shakes out.

Giants | Could use three-man rotation at RB    Wed Jul 23, 08:18 AM

New York Giants RBs Rashad Jennings, David Wilson and Andre Williams could be used in a three-man rotation this season to keep Jennings fresh.

Footballguys view: Fantasy owners need to keep an eye on this battle in camp. Jennings should be the lead back, and he's a fine runner and receiver out of the backfield. Wilson could be the team's change-of-pace back because of his speed and explosiveness. Williams could be the team's banger in short-yardage and goal line situations.

Giants | David Wilson looks sharp    Tue Jul 22, 10:23 PM

New York Giants RB David Wilson (neck) was making quick cuts and looked like one of the most athletic players on the field Tuesday, July 22, according to Dan Salomone of Giants.com.

Footballguys view: Talent was never a question with Wilson. He's quick, fast, agile and plays bigger than his size. Wilson led the NCAA in yards after contact during his final season at Virginia Tech. If healthy, he will compete with Rashad Jennings for touches at the running back position.

Giants | David Wilson works with second-team    Tue Jul 22, 10:04 PM

New York Giants RB David Wilson (neck) worked with the second-team offense Tuesday, July 22, one day after being cleared to return following an offseason neck procedure.

Footballguys view: Wilson is working his way back from a serious neck injury. He'll have to compete behind Rashad Jennings until he's ready for a larger role. We should see him worked in as a change-of-pace back (at least) this year.

Giants | Former OC believes David Wilson can help    Mon Jul 21, 01:32 PM

New York Giants RB David Wilson (neck) should be able to help the offense if he is able to stay healthy this upcoming season, according to former offensive coordinator Kevin Gilbride.

Footballguys view: We agree with the former OC here. Wilson is a talented player who can make big plays happen any time he touches the ball. However, there are still a few things he needs to improve before the team can rely on him as anything more than a part-time back. Gilbride said Wilson needs to work on his pass blocking and route running.

Giants | Rashad Jennings still the lead back    Mon Jul 21, 11:00 AM

New York Giants RB Rashad Jennings is still considered the lead running back, despite RB David Wilson's (neck) clearance for contact.

Footballguys view: That's the best move for the Giants. Wilson is a talented back, but there's no need to rush him back. He'll have to first compete as a reserve behind Jennings in training camp. We like Jennings value as a low-end RB2 with upside.

Giants | David Wilson says he's good to go    Mon Jul 21, 10:29 AM

New York Giants RB David Wilson (neck) said that he has been cleared for everything.

Footballguys view: Talent has never been a question mark for Wilson. During his final season at Virginia Tech, Wilson led the NCAA in yards after contact. He's fast, quick and runs bigger than his size. This neck injury has nearly derailed his pro career, but we'll see if he can get things back on track this year.

New York Giants owner John Mara said he expects RB David Wilson to be ready to go for training camp. 'We expect him to be playing ... all signs are he'll be ready to go,' Mara said.

Footballguys view: Wilson has plenty of talent, but coming back from a neck injury is always tricky. If healthy, he'll compete for playing time with Rashad Jennings.

Giants | Andre Williams could be part of rotation to start the year    Mon Jul 7, 09:46 PM

New York Giants RB Andre Williams could unseat RB Peyton Hillis as the power back by the start of the year and become a part of a three-man rotation with RB Rashad Jennings and RB David Wilson, according to Giants.com writers John Schmeelk and Dan Salomone.

Footballguys view: Jennings is still the favorite to lead the backfield in touches, and he might end up being a value at his 5th/6th round ADP if the Giants use him as a true lead back. Williams can't contribute much in the passing game, and Wilson is not even cleared to play yet, so don't let this news scare you away from Jennings if you like him.

Giants | David Wilson unlikely to be return candidate    Sat Jul 5, 11:29 AM

New York Giants RB David Wilson (neck) likely will not be a candidate for the kick return job even if he is cleared for contact during training camp.

Footballguys view: There's no need to risk further injury. Neck injuries are tricky to come back from. We just saw second-year back Johnathan Franklin (Packers) have to retire after the neck injury he suffered as a rookie in 2013. Wilson is a talented back, but his career has been held back by injury. We'll see if he can stay healthy and impress behind Rashad Jennings this year.

Giants | David Wilson likes the new offense    Thu Jun 26, 01:07 PM

New York Giants RB David Wilson (neck) said he likes the new offense and what it means for him if he gets cleared to play in it. 'I just like the schemes, personally,' Wilson said. 'I like the options I have and the way I can use my athletic ability. I think I really could play a role in this offense.'

Footballguys view: Wilson should love the new offense under Ben McAdoo. The new OC has a long coaching history with the Green Bay Packers, and he's set to bring a similarly explosive offense to the Giants. If healthy, Wilson could be used as a weapon in space on sweeps, draw plays and screen passes. Wilson is competing with veteran Rashad Jennings for the starting job, but expect the team to use some form of RBBC.

Giants | David Wilson shows significant progress    Wed Jun 4, 03:29 PM

Updating a previous report, New York Giants RB David Wilson (neck) has shown significant progress and healing after undergoing neck fusion surgery. 'There has been significant progress and healing since David had the fusion. But the reality is it has only been four and one-half months since the surgery. We anticipate that when David is re-evaluated at the start of training camp he will be cleared at that point."

Footballguys view: Good news for Wilson here. If healthy, Wilson gives the team a fine big-play option at running back. He's got the speed to score any time he touches the ball. Wilson is set to compete with veteran Rashad Jennings and rookie Andre Williams for the starting job in 2014.

Giants | David Wilson could be ready for training camp    Wed Jun 4, 03:29 PM

New York Giants RB David Wilson (neck) could be cleared when he is re-evaluated at the start of training camp, according to team physician Dr. Russell Warren. Warren added Wilson has progressed and healed significantly since his neck fusion.

Footballguys view: A fused neck is stronger than it was pre-surgery. We'll see if Wilson can stay healthy and produce this year for the Giants. He could win the starting job, but the team is likely best served to use him as a change-of-pace back behind Rashad Jennings.

Giants | David Wilson update    Wed Jun 4, 12:14 PM

Updating a previous report, New York Giants RB David Wilson (neck) hasn't shown significant improvement from his surgically repaired neck Wednesday, June 4, so he won't be allowed to do contact drills in organized team activities and minicamp, according to a source. However, he expects to be cleared for training camp next month. He'd likely have to start camp on the Physically Unable to Perform list if he's not cleared, and he'd be a candidate for Injured Reserve if the problem continues. Wilson has been practicing almost exclusively in return drills during OTAs.

Footballguys view: Getting Wilson back will be big for the offense. He's got the speed to make big plays in the open field. Wilson also can gain yards after contact. During his final season at Virginia Tech, Wilson led the NCAA in yards after initial contact. If healthy, Wilson will compete with Rashad Jennings to be the lead back for the Giants.

Giants | David Wilson update    Wed Jun 4, 11:09 AM

New York Giants RB David Wilson (neck) met with doctors Wednesday, June 4, and will do so again in July. He expects to be cleared for full contact in camp.

Footballguys view: Neck injuries are tricky to deal with and they have ended many a career in the NFL. We'll see Wilson compete for playing time with Rashad Jennings and rookie Andre Williams. We like Jennings the best out of the group because of his all-purpose skill set. Wilson is an injury risk, and Williams is a two-down thumuper who needs big holes to produce. Jennings' current ADP is RB27 (5.10) in 12-team PPR leagues.

Footballguys view: Coming back from a neck injury is always a tricky situation. It sounds like Wilson is on the right track. He'll compete with Rashad Jennings and rookie Andre Williams for playing time in 2014.

Giants | David Wilson feels no pain    Thu May 29, 04:07 PM

New York Giants RB David Wilson (neck) said he feels no pain in his neck as he waits for another round of tests next week. If an MRI comes back clean, Wilson could join teammates on the field for the rest of organized team activities and minicamp next month.

Footballguys view: Wilson is still going to have to fight for his roster spot, assuming he is cleared for contact with a clean MRI next week. Rashad Jennings and rookie Andre Williams are his biggest hurdles, aside from his propensity for fumbling.

Giants | David Wilson to have MRI next week    Thu May 29, 01:08 PM

New York Giants RB David Wilson (neck) is scheduled to have an MRI on his neck Wednesday, June 4.

Giants | More on David Wilson    Wed May 28, 09:32 PM

Updating a previous report, New York Giants RB David Wilson (neck) took part in practice Wednesday, May 28, at organized team activities (OTAs), but he was working on special teams and taking part in some offensive drills.

Footballguys view: Remember, these practices are (in theory) non-contact and Wilson still needs to go through an MRI next week to see if he can be cleared for contact. On top of that, the Giants were frustrated enough with Wilson's perfomance the last two years to have signed Rashad Jennings and drafted Andre Williams. Peyton Hillis, Da'Rel Scott and Michael Cox are all in the mix as well. Wilson's position is not stable because of the depth the Giants have at the position and his constant ball security problems.

Giants | Andre Williams unsure of three-headed monster at RB    Fri May 23, 01:16 PM

New York Giants RB Andre Williams said he unsure if the Giants will use a three-headed monster at running back with him, RB Rashad Jennings and RB David Wilson. 'I can't really say they're going to build that three-headed monster,' said Williams. 'I'm not really too sure yet. I'm just getting here and learning as much as I can. I think each running back brings a lot of different specialties, and I'm just excited to see what we'll be able to do once we're out on the field.'

Footballguys view: We like Jennings the most in this backfield. Jennings is proven as a quality runner and receiver out of the backfield. He could end up emerging as the lead back. Wilson is the most naturally talented back from this group. A neck injury has cut his career short, and he may not ever be able to get back to his old form.

New York Giants RB David Wilson (neck) is on schedule to be back this season, according to general manager Jerry Reese. Reese said his return would be a bonus.

Footballguys view: Wilson is going to find some competition again this year as Rashad Jennings is coming off a red-hot 2013 with the Oakland Raiders, can hold onto the ball and stay healthy. We don't think Wilson hangs onto the lead job and Jennings has the chance to be very good in this offense.

Giants | David Wilson ahead of schedule    Tue Apr 22, 02:35 PM

New York Giants RB David Wilson (neck) said he is still waiting for a clear MRI to be medically cleared, but is currently ahead of schedule.

Footballguys view: Wilson is not being counted on to be a big contributor this year for the Giants, but he is talented enough to sidetrack their plans of making free agent signing Rashad Jennings a featured back if he can get back to full health. Wilson will be worth a late-round flier as long as he is on the field this summer.

Footballguys view: Wilson will likely be a change of pace to Rashad Jennings to open the season if he is ready to go, but he is talented enough to overtake Jennings if he hits on all cylinders and limits his fumbles. He remains a good stash and buy low candidate in dynasty leagues.

Giants | Unsure of David Wilson's status    Fri Feb 21, 02:24 PM

New York Giants head coach Tom Coughlin is not sure of RB David Wilson's (neck) status for both the offseason program and the fall. 'I really don't know the answer to that question,' Coughlin said. 'I think a lot has to do with his attitude, the way he feels, the way the doctors and trainers obviously feel. He's not going to be put out there unless he's ready for that. I'm not even sure how he's going to be limited in the spring. I saw him about four or five days ago and he's that same bouncy personality. He's very pleased with where he's at right now. He's able to do work with his legs for example, not as a heavy-duty thing but in a lighter capacity. He's excited about that. He looks good, he feels good. He doesn't have a lot of pain. I'm excited about that.

Footballguys view: The Giants shouldn't count on Wilson. They will get a boost if he's healthy, as we feel he can still be an effective back as a pro. However, the team should set themselves up with another plan at the position.
